    Dear Sisters and Brothers Christ,

Grace and peace to you in the name of our loving God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I know school is out for the summer, but I thought I’d start this letter with a little quiz in honor of all those involved in education. How many of these questions can you answer correctly?

    1. Do they have the fourth of July in England?

    2. Some months have 30 days; others have 31. How many months have 28 days?

    3. A woman gives a beggar 50 cents; the woman is the beggar’s sister, but the beggar is not the woman’s brother. How come?

    4. With the rise in terrorism, crossing the border can be more complicated. Why can’t a man living in the U.S.A. be buried in Canada?

    5. In baseball, how many outs are there in an inning?

    6. Is it legal for a man in Minnesota to marry his widow’s sister? Why?

    7. Two men play five games of checkers. Each man wins the same number of games. There are no ties. How can this be?

    8. Divide 30 by one-half and add 10. What is the answer?

    9. If there are three apples and you take away two, how many do you have?

    10. I have two U.S. coins totaling 55 cents. One isn’t a nickel. What are the coins?

    11. If it was winter, you had only one match, and you walked into a room where there was a candle, a kerosene lamp, and a wood burning stove, which would you light first?

    12. How far can a dog run into the woods?

    13. A farmer has 17 sheep, and all but 9 die. How many are left?

    14. How many two cent stamps are there in a dozen?

    15. What was the President’s name in 1975?

How did you do on the quiz? This quiz is silly, but it does illustrate how important it is to listen. Those who read the questions with discernment probably answered most, if not all of them, correctly. Those who didn’t listen as closely found themselves stumped on a few, guessing, and making errors. In life we also find ourselves stumped or making wrong choices when we haven’t listened with attention.

As we enter the summer season, it appears that many people aren’t really listening closely—at least, not to God. Many churches see a drastic drop in church attendance. As pastors, our hope is that while you may not be worshiping with your home church as often, you are worshiping somewhere else. If not, I would encourage you and your family to make time to worship God in some way every week. If you need help finding a church somewhere around where you will be on the weekends or on your vacation trips, please feel free to give me a call. If there aren’t any churches or faith communities readily available, I would encourage you to take a devotional or perhaps a family worship resource with you when you go, so that you, as a family, can create your own worship.

Regardless of where you go and what you do during this summer season, as your pastor, I remind you of your need to hear again and again, the story of God’s love for you and yours, his promises for you and yours, and the mission he has set before you and yours.

If I can be of any help, please call!

    Yours in Christ,

Randy Whitehead Pastor, New Life and Little Bethany Lutheran Churches

Answers: 1. Yes. They also have a first, second, and third of July, like most places. 2. All twelve of them have at least 28 days. 3. The beggar is the woman’s sister. 4. Because he is living, not dead. 5. 6—three per half. 6. No—because the man would be dead. 7. The two men are not playing against each other. 8. 70—dividing by ½ is like multiplying by 2. 30 x 2=60, plus 10=70. 9. Two. You just took those two. 10. A 50 cent piece and a nickel– One coin isn’t a nickel, but the other is. 11. The match. 12. Half way. Then he would be running out. 13. 9—all but nine die. 14. 12 15. Donald Trump—his name back in 1975 was the same as it is now.

New Life Lutheran Church Unapproved Minutes

    Mau 8, 2019

New Life Lutheran Church Council met at 7:30 p.m. on

May 8, 2019 at NLLC in Rothsay, MN. Present were:

Mike Heidecker, Jessi Christ, Kristi Pfingsten, John

Reber, Renae Froslie, Steph Curtis, and Pastor

    Randy,

The meeting opened with devotions from Kristi.

1.0 John made a motion to approve the agenda as

amended, Jessi seconded it, motion carried.

2.0 John made a motion to approve the minutes from

April 2019, Kris seconded it, motion carried.

3.0 John made a motion to approve the treasurer’s

report, Steph seconded it, motion carried.

    4.0 Ongoing Business

    4.1 Bells & Signage

The cost is under $34,000. At present, $13,300

has been donated. The cemetery board has gra-

ciously offered $5,000 from each cemetery ac-

count. There is some concern about the donation

setting a precedence for borrowing from these

funds for future projects. The council discussed

utilizing funds as a loan to get the project complet-

ed and having some sort of fund raising campaign

to pay back the money. The council decided to set

up a designated memorial that would continue until

the sign was paid off. With this in mind, John made

a motion to move forward and have the sign built.

Jessi seconded the motion. Motion carried.

    4.2 Replotting of Cemeteries

It was decided that the cemetery board would

handle the replotting and it will be taken off the on-

    going business for the council.

    4.3 Milestone Ministry

The first milestone went well. Kristi will keep

    going with the milestones.

    4.4 Senior Recognition and Baccalaureate

Pastor Randy suggested the each of the Roth-

say teachers should receive an invitation to bacca-

laureate. Steph will send Kristi a list of names and

Kristi will see that the invitations are sent.

    4.5 Front Door

It will cost $2,090 doors to replace the auto

opener. Steph made a motion to accept the bid by

Fargo Glass and Paint and have the Auto opener

replaced. Jessi seconded the motion. Motion

    carried.

    5.0 New Business

    5.1 Correspondence: NA

    5.2 Upcoming events

Milestone Ministry Welcome to Worship May 12

    Senior Recognition May 19

    5.3 4H bench

The 4H would like to build a bench that would sit

next to the library. The council agreed to let them do

this as long as it was not permanent and could be

    moved to mow around.

    5.4 Audio System staffing

There was a lot of discussion on how to staff the

sound booth. Since Worship and Music was not

there for the discussion, it was tabled until next

    meeting.

    5.5 Summer Council Meeting Time.

The council will be meeting at 6:30 for June, July,

    and August

    5.6 Blessing Blocks.

Kristi has prepared the spreadsheet for the new

envelopes. The amount to be placed on the

envelopes will be an average of what needs to be

given to fulfill our budget. This is only an average

and as such there will be members who give more

than this amount and those who will give less.

    5.7 Our Savior’s checking account.

A motion was made by Mike that Warren

Helgeson be the authorized signer on the Our

Savior’s Cemetery Fund at Bell State Bank of

Pelican Rapids and that Selvin Brenden will be

taken off the account. Motion was seconded by

    John. Motion carried.

    6.0 Pastor’s Report–

There was some discussion about the lack of and

providing confirmation robes. He met with Pastor

Wendell on May 8th to begin planning the baccalaure-

ate. Randy will be taking next Tuesday (May 15) off for

his son’s knee surgery. Randy will be gone June 9th

and 30th. It was decided that John or Jess will read a

sermon on those days. There are Bible Studies planned

    for the summer.

    7.0 Youth Director’s Report – no report

    8.0 Office Manager’s Report– There is a 3-ring binder

    with opportunities to give locally.

    9.0 WELCA - No Report

    10. NLLC Foundation Report–They will be making a

donation to the sign. Scholarship information for 2nd

year college students will be coming out shortly.

    11. Committee Reports

    Worship and Music: No Report

Education: VBS will be June 2nd—6th

Evangelism and Mission/Family Life and Social

    Concerns: No report

Church Property: The flush valve on the men’s urinal has

been fixed. We need to look at a new flood lamp for the

east flower bed. Will check the dishwasher sometime

    this week.

Stewardship: The new stewardship program is up and

running. Kristen Heidecker gave the first temple talk to

go with the program. Giving is up 10% compared to last

    year at this time.

Meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

    Respectfully Submitted,

    Kristi Pfingsten

    Building a House

Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman keeps awake in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to retire late, To eat the bread of painful labors; For He gives to His beloved even in his sleep. Behold, children are a gift of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one’s youth. How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They will not be ashamed

The Psalm may be more about building a household and home, than constructing a house. Notice that dependence upon God is the emphasis. We can try to do all kinds of things on our own and in the end we find ourselves without the help of God. All along, he says He gives to His beloved even in our sleep.

Children are a gift, a reward, and an addition to any man’s family. A blessing comes to the man whose quiver is full of them. A sense of pride (not be ashamed in the gate) comes to every Father when he speaks of his kids.

Does this describe my household? Certainly the blessing I feel today as I think about my children! This is Father’s Day and I could not be happier with my children. The Lord has built our house, not me. Kai, Eden, Keanu and Kaenan feel like arrows in the hand of a warrior… they are useful to God and His Kingdom.

Lord, I am blessed… just as You describe in this song. My heart is singing today. May I say to you

    Happy Father’s Day!

    share these great gifts.

Who Will Mend Me? By Lorraine Parish July 4, 2018

Once I was old and glorious. Once my children held tightly together, little stars all shiny and proud.

Each different, each honored to belong to a greatness history had never seen. And there was a time they were torn. Miraculously, they held together through unbearable pain and horrifying shedding of brotherly blood. A death-to-the-end fight for equality, a noble fight, my children fought.

I have been bravely carried and planted in places on this earth man had never seen. I have been to the moon! I have been dug from the rubble, and resurrected like a phoenix, to inspire courage and strength to go on. I have witnessed moments, and have been proud. I have witnessed moments, and have been ashamed.

Once I was sacred. Desecrating me for political gain would have been a thing only an enemy would dare do. Today, cowards falsely embrace me with sham patriotism, and unbridled hypocrisy. They drape themselves with me. Bent on abolishing their freedoms, they rip my children apart.

Now I am tired, faded, and need of repair. Who will mend me? Who will see my agony, and take a kind loving hand to me? I have been steadfast, I have never wavered, I have been here for you all. I have led you through battles with your bodies, through battles for your souls. And now you desert me, you use me to destroy your neighbors. What will become of me? What is this fear I have yet to ever feel? Will the evil in man's heart, will his insatiable worship of power, of money, be my demise?

To fly again, all new and whole, to fly with my children united, my threads mended, my colors brilliant, to be strong and proud again. This is my hope, this is my dream. Who will mercifully mend me? I ask.

    Applying Bible Principles

Money is a neutral commodity, a means of ex-change. It is neither inherently good nor evil. But a wrong view of money can become a problem to us.

In 1 Timothy 6:9-10, Scripture warns about the dangers of a determination to get rich: “But those who want to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil; and in their eagerness to be rich some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains.”

When we have a consuming desire to get rich, when we are obsessed with money so that it becomes the focus of our time and attention, then we have made it the number one priority in our lives. In that spot, it replaces everything, including God. We begin to find our security in money, not in God and in God alone.

However, when our view of God is right and our view of money is right, we will realize that money can-not buy security; money cannot purchase happiness; money cannot guarantee peace or joy or content-ment. God alone can provide these essentials as we “ . . . strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteous-ness.”

In his book, The Gift of Giving, Wayne Watts said this: “God always lovingly instructs us in the path that is in our best interest and which will bring us the greatest happiness in life. Therefore, for our good, God instructs us to put him first in all things, and this includes how we use our money.”

How do you view money? Is it at the center of your life, thereby perhaps replacing God’s rightful role? And equally important, are you using the money God has given to you to advance his kingdom and his righteousness?
