We’ve Never Done It That Way Before…This summer we are about to embark
on a journey of something different. In-stead of powering down for the summer we are going to power up. Instead of putting the church on autopilot, we are going to be actively engaging in growth as disciples.
Starting June 16th our worship schedule will change. At 9 a.m. we will have a Call to Wor-ship followed by something we are calling “Joy Groups” and finish with a time of worship in-cluding Holy Communion. We will spend about two hours learning, growing and worshipping together.
So why Joy Groups? One of the most frequent feedbacks is a feeling of being disconnected from one another. It is unrealistic for us to try and con-nect the whole congregation together so we are offering this opportunity for cells to form around shared interests.
Each group will have a framework we call “Faith 5” to discuss the topic of the day. Faith 5 is Share (Highs and Lows or how is your life go-ing), Read (Scripture), Talk (about how Scripture speaks to what is happening in our lives), Pray (together about our lives and what God is speak-ing into them), Bless (each other).
While we are sharing each group can be doing something else. One person has expressed inter-est in taking walks during the summer. Another thought board games would be a good ice breaker. Others have talked about crafts or projects around the church. Whatever the interest, the important thing is to gather.
One last thing about Joy Groups. It is about the experience, not the ages of the participants. You are encouraged to engage groups that interest you regardless of your age. Our hope is that different generations of people can engage on a meaningful level (another frequent wish expressed).
As we wrap up, Joy Groups we will gather together again to worship and celebrate commu-nion. It will be our time to gather the groups to-gether into the larger body to celebrate our shared faith.
There will be a lot of learning as we live into this experiment. Some things are going to work well and others will not work at all. Together we will learn from our experiences to become stron-ger disciples of Jesus.

WOMEN’S NEWSWomen’s
Brunch and Bible Study will not meet in June. We will resume our study,
Mirror, Mirror with session 5 in September. Enjoy your summer!
The Women’s Book Guild will meet on Tuesday, June 18. Katrina Boedecker will be leading the discussion on The
Masterpiece by Francine Rivers. Jackie Creed and Brigitte Pagel will be our hostesses.
Homeless MythesOne common myth is that
homeless are transients. While handing out sack lunches at Gather on May 11, I was able to survey 20 of our guests (not everyone). I found that 10 were native Washingtonians with hometowns of Centra-lia-5, Rochester-1, Shelton-1, Longview-1, Spokane-1, and Seattle-1. Of the remaining 10, home states were: Colora-do-1, Illinois-2, New York-1, Georgia-1, California-1 and Utah-1.
Two guests were natives of Mexico. One guest, known to have refused treatment for mental illness, gave her hometown as “another dimen-sion.” For the out-of-staters, time spent in Lewis County included 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 17 and 41 years. To me, 10 years or more can be considered “a local,” so 13/20 or 65% are firmly entrenched here in Lewis County. Given a chance to comment on home-lessness, several responded.
No one understands until it happens to them.” “I wish the city could do something,” and “It is a disgrace against humanity, a great darkness.” I plan to survey our guests about their education and jobs or vocations. I suspect there will be some surprises. Sue Edwards, MMM Sack Lunch Coordinator

Bits and PiecesDear Arnie and crew,Thank you for the wonderful mother’s day breakfast! The beautiful flowers on the tables and delicious food was very much appreciated. All of your efforts, in preparing, serving and cleaning up afterwards didn’t go unnoticed! Kudos, men!!!Jan CosserLooking For a Short-Term Volunteer Opportunity?RISE Lewis County is needing volunteers to replace the FFA kids for just the summer months
(June through August – and maybe September). The Chehalis FFA has been preparing and serving the meal at Gather the SECOND Saturday of each month but will not be available for the summer months. If you and/or your family are interested in this short-term opportunity, or if you have questions,
please contact Carolyn Schoenborn, 360-983-3170; [email protected]’T FORGET…It is St. John’s turn to serve the Sat-urday meal at Gather on June 22nd! If you like to help pre-pare the meal, join us at 9:00 am; if you like to serve and help clean up afterwards, join us at 10:30 a.m. Contact Don-na Moir or Sue Edwards for more information.
Also, June is a 5 Saturday month, so we could use extra help on Saturday, the 29th, as well.

Library Blurb...The Year of Fog by
Michelle Richmond was the Book Guild’s book for May.
Photographer Abby Mason’s life is changed for-ever by the disappearance of six-year-old Emma, Abby’s fiance’s daughter with whom she had been walking on the cold and foggy San Francisco ocean beach. Abby refuses to believe that Emma is dead
and she searches desperately for the truth behind the child’s vanishing and about what happened that morning. The days drag into weeks, as the police lose interest but Abby can only wander the beaches and city streets, attempting to recover the little girl that she lost.
This page-turner with a phil-osophical bent will soon be on
the library book shelf!Note: The Book Guild has
been given a retired library cart. As soon as it has been repaired, it will take the place of the table in the Narthex for book sales. We thank all of you who have been purchas-ing our offerings. Book dona-tions are still welcome.
