And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and

good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves

together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one

another, and so much the more as you see the Day

approaching. ~ Hebrews 10:24-25

Recently on Facebook I saw a sign which read, “Huge fight

at seafood restaurant – battered fish everywhere.” It’s an

old joke but still makes me chuckle. But, looking back over

the years, I’ve felt like those battered fish. Fights do break

out, and sometimes we get caught in the middle. It

shouldn’t be this way, but it does happen. We need to be

above this and take the higher road.

Tony Campolo tells about an incident that happened to him

on his way into work. Walking the sidewalk pathways of

downtown, Tony would often pass by a number of homeless

and transient people. From time to time, they would make

requests for money; generally, he ignored them.

One day, a bag lady (whom he had seen before in his mad

dash to get from point A to B) shuffled out of a donut shop

with a steaming hot cup of coffee. Their eyes met and Tony

forced a smile. Putting down her coat and bags, she called

out, “Hey, mister, would you like a sip of my coffee?”

Now, if you were Tony how would you respond? Keep

walking and ignore her? That’s what Tony did, or at least he

started to. A half a block away, he turned back around and

said, “Hey, lady! Yes! Yes, I would like a taste of your coffee.”

She held out the cup with her dirty hand; he took the cup

and swallowed what had to be the most delicious cup of

coffee he had tasted in a long time.

“Isn’t it good?” she said. Tony replied, “Yes, it IS GOOD! And

thank you. By the way, why did you offer me your coffee?”

She said, “Because it was so good, I thought someone might

like to share it with me and enjoy it, too.”

A small, yet simple act of kindness from a stranger interrupted Tony Campolo’s walk

to the office. Kindness comes in all shapes and sizes, yet regardless of how big or

small, we all appreciate a kind act.

At the time of the writing of Hebrews, there was a great persecution. Our natural

tendency during trials is to save our own skin or act to each his own. But Hebrews

exhorts us to encourage one another. Encouragement, or kindness, is an act that

helps someone be a better believer, even when life is rough and tough.

The world is full of discouragers! When we complain about situations that are

displeasing to us, we can hurt others’ feelings and be discouraging with our

negativity. It is our Christian duty to encourage people. Many times, a word or act of

thanks, appreciation, or kindness has helped a weak brother or sister stand on their

feet and keep walking with God.

The passage above tells us to stir up love and good works. In other words, be kind.

As Christians this should be who we are. Being rude is easy. It does not take any

effort and is a sign of weakness and insecurity. Kindness, on the other hand, shows

great self-discipline and strong self-esteem. Being kind is not always easy when

dealing with rude and even toxic people. Kindness is a sign of a person who has

done a lot of personal work and has come to a great self-understanding and wisdom.

Choose to be kind over being right, and you’ll be right every time because kindness is

a sign of strength.

Prayer: Lord God in Heaven, help us to be kind to one another. Let us be

encouragers rather than discouragers. With Your Holy Spirit, help us to lift someone’s

life today. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

The La Porte First United Methodist Church will be holding its 6th annual Arts & Crafts Show on Saturday, Sept. 28. Last year, they leased 3 buildings at the La Porte County Fairgrounds and had 125 artists and crafters from Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois. At this time, 82 booth spaces are filled for this year’s show and they anticipate filling the remaining spaces before the show date. Artistic and crafty congregation members are invited to participate as vendors. Vendor applications and letters to vendors are hanging on the DVUMC hall bulletin board if you are interested.

Cluster Meeting

June 23, 2019

2 pm Central Time Our church cluster meeting will be held at Maple

Grove United Methodist Church on Sunday

afternoon, June 23. We are part of a “Cluster”

of United Methodist churches. These include

Door Village, Lamb’s Chapel, Maple Grove, New

together, discuss their church’s upcoming

Concert) and then try to help, support, and

promote each other’s events. It’s a positive,

friendly way to get to know the people of other

succeed. Please come, make friends, have

refreshments, and share our Door Village spirit!
