Dear Friends I had the privilege of seeing and hearing the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, recently. He was extremely funny, entertaining us with stories of a recent wedding where he forgot the vows (you will know by the time you read this whether he repeated this alarming omission at the Royal Wedding) and of a baptism in Nuneaton many years ago, when the Vicar (not him) enquired as to the name of the child and was told it was Algernon, to which he responded ‘don’t be silly’ and proceeded to baptise him as ‘Fred’. The name stuck, so Vicar’s do know best! He was also honest, open and vulnerable, speaking about how discovering that the man he had known all his life as father turned out not to be his biological father and the impact this had on him. He spoke of the intense personal criticism his role entails, including messages telling him that he will go to hell for not believing quite the right things. And, although he said, as he has stated several times before that the most stressful job he has ever done was as a parish priest, it was clear that the burden of high office weighed heavily. It was all very moving, uplifting because his faith remains inspiringly strong despite the many challenges he faces and encouraging to continue in my own ministry despite my own challenges (no royal weddings on the horizon for me!) I found myself wondering whether one would ever be likely to hear a politician be so honest and vulnerable? I guess it’s rather more difficult when the focus is always on winning the next election or persuading people that they were right to vote for you at the last one. But it might suggest why politicians struggle to be trusted. Perhaps the onus lies with us, the electorate. If we won’t vote for the politicians who tell us the truth, is it any wonder that they are tempted to exaggerate or avoid responsibility.

And then, I find myself wondering about my own openness and vulnerability. If I speak of my own struggles, wounds and vulnerabilities, what will happen? I fear sometimes that those who need to share with a priest will keep their challenges to themselves for worry that they will overburden someone who is already struggling. Others, who need to vent their fears, anxieties and disappointments will keep their thoughts to themselves for fear of a backlash, while those who give little thought to the impact of their words and actions will continue to be as unkind as before. What do you think? Every blessing, Greg Forget me Not Our Dementia Support Group (Forget me Not) continues in St Andrews Church and on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month from 2-3.30pm. The group is available to anyone living with dementia and their carers, with a charge of £2 per person to cover refreshments and materials. All welcome. For further information, please contact Lynnette on 7646 7097. Eastern Green Community Group The next meeting of the Eastern Green Community Group will take place on Wednesday June 20th at Eastern Green Social Club at 7.30pm. The meeting will be attended by Mark Andrews, who is Chief Planning Officer for Coventry City Council. This will give local residents the opportunity to influence the shape of the new development to the north of the parish, with regard to infrastructure, traffic, community facilities, type of housing provision, etc. For further information, please contact the Secretary, Richard Barnes ([email protected])

Allesley Green News

Party in the Park took place on Monday May 7th in Juniper Park off Woodridge Avenue. This was the 5th year of holding the event and we were blessed with the best Bank Holiday weather. Entertainment was provided by the group Speak Brother, The Soulful Gospel Choir, The Ukaholics Ukulele Band, En Pointe Dance and The Festival Brass Band. Refreshments were provided and included Wood Fired Pizza, Cake Stall, Burgers and hot dogs and a Coffee Wagon. Ice creams seemed to be the favourite with a queue for most of the day. The raffle provided a number of prizes which included a Spa Day for two, a Round of Golf for four at West Midlands Golf and a meal for two at the Fairways Restaurant. Although attendees didn’t stand still long enough to be counted, we estimate that we had some 2000 visitors during the course of the event. The event made possible by the number of volunteers who helped set up, manage the events and stalls and car parking management was the best it has been. Our thanks to all of you that volunteered, you did an excellent job and made the day possible.

ST. ANDREW’S PRAYER MINISTRY TEAM Our Prayer Ministry Team is made up of church members who have a heart for prayer, seek to be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit, and who are able to offer a healing ministry. Members of the team are available, after our Sunday morning services; for those seeking prayer for themselves or on behalf of others. Periodically, we hold a Healing Service, which incorporates opportunity for anyone to respond to prayer. Our next Healing Service is planned for Sunday, 24th June at 10.00 am. All are very welcome. An important aspect of our role is to uphold the church and its parish in prayer. St Andrew’s has a Prayer Tree, available for all, whether a Church member or not, and you are invited to come and write a prayer request and hang it on the tree. This is available at any time during the week. We make a point of praying for specific requests each Wednesday, during mid-week 10.00am Communion, and members of the team will also regularly look at the prayer requests and pray over them. Additionally, a ‘Prayer Chain’ is available for anyone in urgent need of prayer. Such requests are circulated and upheld in prayer by all members of the Team during the period of crisis. A privilege which we take very seriously. For any further information on the prayer ministry team, or if you or anyone known to you needs prayer support please contact Lesley Lee (Prayer Ministry Team co-ordinator) on 07970 302554 or 024 7646 0048 or email [email protected]

Eastern Green History Group Our visit to the London Road Cemetery was well attended and Ian Woolley took us on a tour of the site. Starting at the Paxton Monument erected in 1865. We were guided around the notable gravestones, many of which are well known names in Coventry. A couple of interesting facts were that a bomb had been dropped on the site in WW11 and the gravestones in the area are peppered with shrapnel marks. Also, Hannah Harrison Barnes nee Lowe, who was the illegitimate daughter of King George IV. Ian didn't just talk about the people and the graves but also the variety of trees planted there, it was a very pleasant walk and a very informative afternoon.

Future meetings Monday 25th June a visit to Kenilworth Abbey and

Museum with Jan Cooper, Head of the Kenilworth History and Archaeology Society.

Monday 23rd July at 7.30pm, Peter Lee, 'A Illustrated talk of the Old Mills and Factories of Nuneaton'

No meeting in August. Contact Jenny for details and if you would like to join us

76403372 EASTERN GREEN WI Instead of holding our May meeting in the Village Hall, we visited Kings Hill Nursery, just off the Stoneleigh Road. We were able to look round the nursery and purchase plants before enjoying refreshments in the adjoining Four Seasons Function Room, where the manager gave an interesting talk about the history and development of the nursery. The nursery employs young people with learning difficulties, and besides providing them with work and the opportunity to earn some money, they are able to have fun and socialise with other young people. Our meeting on 6th June will be held in the Village Hall at 7.15 and Helen Richardson, an image consultant

will advise on styles to suit our body shape and how to choose the right colours and accessories. Moving on to 4th July, we will be visited by a Punch & Judy entertainer, who will tell us about the history of Punch & Judy and hopefully give us a show! We meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.15 in Eastern Green Village Hall and visitors are always welcome (we ask for a donation of £3.50 which includes refreshments). Tile Hill Job Club

The Tile Hill Job Club, which is based in the Church hall at St Oswald's Church in Jardine Crescent, meets every Thursday afternoon between 2 and 4pm apart from national elections and a well-earned holiday at Christmas. We have gone from strength to strength since its conception in February 2016 with a record breaking 453 visitors attending in 2017, which was over 200% up on the previous year. We have helped at least 25 people into employment however, there will be many more as people do not always contact us to share their success stories We have increased the amount of laptops being used thanks to the generosity of the Stoneleigh Trust, so we are in a better position to help more people. We rely heavily on the goodwill of our hardworking volunteers who dedicate their time and expertise each week and we are always willing to welcome more volunteers as welcomers, supporters or people to write CVs/cover letters. If you're interested come and see what we are all about or speak to Dawn Easthope, Stephen or Eileen Warne.

Christian Aid is working hard in Bangladesh. Christian Aid has been working around the clock to help those who have fled Myanmar to the camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, to prepare for the coming cyclone and monsoon season. Flooding, landslides and cyclones are expected which will destroy many of the temporary shelters set up since the mass movement of people started when violence escalated in Myanmar last August. Since then, about 687,000 people have crossed the border into Bangladesh. Christian Aid has identified areas likely to be affected by flooding and landslides so they can relocate people to safer ground. An overhaul of existing latrines and water points is underway to help prevent a major outbreak of waterborne diseases. Ram Kishan, Christian Aid’s Regional Emergency Manager South Asia, said: “People have lived through hell to get to the safety of the camps in Cox’s Bazar. Conditions are cramped and life is already very difficult. Now thousands are going to be hit with further heartache unless we can help them in time.” Christian Aid has been helping all communities displaced by the fighting in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, and displaced Rohingya Muslims and Hindus who have crossed the country’s border into Bangladesh. David Pickup, a solicitor, considers what might happen to your Facebook page when you die. What happens to their Facebook page when they die is probably the last thing on most peoples’ minds. However, many people have an “online presence” such as Facebook pages, Linked-in, email accounts, Instagram and all sorts of bank accounts and website pages. Who can get access to that information? Depending on the type of account, a relative or friend might want to close it, retrieve information or images or preserve it in some way. Making a will is an opportunity to make a clear decision about what happens to things you own and this includes something electronic and who carries out your wishes. According to Facebook, you can choose to either appoint a legacy contact to look after your account, or have your account permanently deleted from Facebook. If you do not choose to have your account permanently deleted, it will be memorialised if Facebook are told about the death. Memorialised accounts are a place for friends and family to gather and share memories after a person has passed away. Google encourages people to think about these issues and they have something called an Inactive Account Manager to let them know who should have access to your information, and whether you want your account to be deleted. They recognise that many people pass away without leaving clear instructions about how to manage their online accounts. They work with immediate family members and representatives to close the account of a deceased person where appropriate. In certain circumstances they may provide content from a deceased user’s account.

The best advice is to think carefully and make choices about what happens in the event of your passing and carefully select someone you trust to do this. As ever this is a light-hearted introduction and if in any doubt get proper advice. Different companies have different policies and procedures so always check carefully. Canon David Winter is saddened by the widespread ‘negativity’ around… Everyone seems to be against something’, someone said to me the other day, and I had to agree. ‘What I can’t stand is . . .’ can be followed by almost anything, from babies screaming in the coffee shop to people who will say ‘Take care!’, junk mail, careless parkers or even someone’s accent or hair style on television. Identifying ourselves by what we are against is an ancient but ultimately soul-destroying attitude. Older people like me have our own version of it: ‘People nowadays . . .’ followed by our particular dislike about modern ways. ‘People’ are us, actually, and I dare say our little foibles equally irritate some younger citizens. The answer, someone suggested to me, is to replace ‘What I can’t stand is…’ with ‘What cheers me up is…’ I worked out my own list, including children laughing, a dog’s devotion, ‘Hiya David’ from a neighbour, a favourite hymn in church, and the supermarket check-out person who has just beeped their five hundredth item of the day but still smiles and says hello as though she means it. Come to think of it, I quite like the dismissal, ‘Take care!’ I need to.
