Of course Co-Chairs Cathy Hasse, Jerry Beasley, and Glen Milligan have been working toward this week's activities even before we flipped the calendar to 2018, and the proof will be evident when all of us gather at Greenmead on August 3rd for the Ceilidh and August 4th for Games Day! The volunteers who stepped up to chair the numerous positions and activities have also been working non-stop to put everything together, so please be sure to show them some appreciation when you come to work your shift on Friday night or Saturday. All volunteers are welcomed, and we still need more to bring this all together and have, as Cathy says: "The Best Games Ever!". The Annual Highland Games is right around the corner! Of course Co-Chairs Cathy Hasse, Jerry Beasley, and Glen Milligan have been working toward this week's activities even before we flipped the calendar to 2018, and the proof will be evident when all of us gather at Greenmead on August 3rd for the Ceilidh and August 4th for Games Day!
The volunteers who stepped up to chair the numerous positions and activities have also been working non-stop to put everything together, so please be sure to show them some appreciation when you come to work your shift on Friday night or Saturday. All volunteers are welcomed, and we still need more to bring this all together and have, as Cathy says: "The Best Games Ever!".

Dancing with the Scots!For those of you who signed up for Scottish Country Dancing Lessons, we are all set to get started with our Scottish Country Dance Lessons from our husband and wife team, Grant and Glenna.
Our first night is Monday, August 13, and we will meet from 7:30-9:30 pm each week at The Kilgour Scottish Centre, 2363 Rochester Road, Troy, MI 48083.
Other dates are August 20 and 27th, September 17 and 24th, and October TBD, 2018. Try to make as many as possible. Wear comfortable shoes as we will be dancing on carpeting.

Highland Games Are Almost Here!
Are you excited? We are! The 169th Annual Highland Games are right around the corner.
We have worked hard to present to our guests the best Highland Games ever. We have had lots of positive supporters and many members (and some non-members) right by our side right from the beginning of our planning stages last fall.
We still need volunteers. It is not too late to join in. If you or any member of your family, your neighbors, or co-workers can help us, we would certainly appreciate it.
At this writing, less than half of our members have purchased their raffle tickets. PLEASE consider buying the four tickets that you were sent earlier this season. All of the money from the raffle is earmarked for our scholarships. You can still mail in your money or bring it to the Games on August 4th. It is so important that we all support this cause.
If you cannot make the Volunteer Meeting on Wednesday, August 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Blue House at Greenmead, you can pick up your name tag, lanyard, and volunteer shirt in the Meeting House at Greenmead on Thursday or Friday from 10- 4. If those times do not work for you, please go to the Welcome Center on Saturday where you can check in and pick up these items.

Here is Diane Bond's Winning Recipe:1 Pound Butter (at room temperature)3 Cups Flour1 Cup White Rice Flour1 Cup Sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degreesMix all ingredients by handSpread on a 13" x 15" Cookie sheet panBake approximately 50-60 minutes, until golden. Take out if oven and prick with Fork,then Sprinkle with sugar, generously.
ShortBread Contest 2018Think you make good Shortbread? Enter yours this year at the St. Andrew's Annual Highland Games, at Greenmead Historical Park! On Saturday, August 4th turn at least 12 Samples to the Welcome Center, by 10:00 a.m. Winner will be announced after the Tug of War Contest and must submit their recipe.

Off the Shelf… News about the Charles S. Low Memorial Library What is in a name... Well, for many people when they hear the word library, they think of thesame definition as in a dictionary “ a building or room containing collections of books, periodicals,and sometimes films and recorded music for people to read, borrow, or refer to”. But for the LowLibrary there is much more than this common definition. The library committee has beenmandated by the By-Laws of the Society “for securing and preserving the records andmemorabilia of the society... and shall prepare and maintain a written history of the society.”Since our history and traditions are so important to us, this is a huge responsibility that we takevery seriously.
The following are additional functions and services that the library provides not only for ourmembership, but to the community at large.
Special Collections have been created:Clan – Partnering with Clans all over North America, bringing their documents, books,and artifacts to our library.Genealogical – Providing assistance to members and the community in the researching oftheir family history, as well as providing seminars with local speakers and as far away asScotland. Providing an extensive collection of books and reference material for thosewanting and needing more information in their family research.Special Collection – Are the books that have been handed down through the years fromour society members, many dating back to the early 1800’s.
Partnerships:Develop relationships and partnerships with St. Bride’s School and Library in Scotland, theOdom Library in Georgia, and the Troy Public Library here in Michigan.
Programs:Beginning in 2011, the library has sponsored at least one major program each year dealing with genealogy, history, Scottish Independence, Scottish influence in early American history, and a number of other interesting topics. These programs have been open to themembership and to the community.
Society Archives:The committee is just beginning to put together what will be a very extensive warehouseof information, document, and artifacts of the Society and Scots in Michigan. We havealready had a number of requests from not only members, but from the community andout of state individuals, wanting information for their research.
Oral History Project:We started this project in 2018 with the professional interviews of our members for theirthoughts and memories of the society. The library wanted to make sure that thisinformation was not lost but preserved for future society members. We feel that we areunique in gathering this information from its members to be preserved. Coming this fallis an off-shoot of this project that will further grow the information we have in thelibrary.
Written History of the Society:Fred Wessells was the first member to write down the society’s history from 1849 to 2000. He provided an excellent foundation in which we will need to build on, taking us from 2000 to today. Ian Hunter and John Thomson have volunteered to research and write down this next segment in our history. The library committee will be taking all of this information and expand it to include what has taken place in Michigan and the Country during this time frame. We will create a book that will contain pictures and copies of historical documents that will be the first of many revisions in the coming years.

Library Updates: Clans: We now have 16 Clans that have agreed to participate with our library, with newsletters, books and artifacts. Genealogy: Irene and Sharon have now put together 154 pedigrees with 2,357 both current and past members of the Society. This Pedigree Project (Six Degrees of Separation) was started this year to help current and new members with their genealogy research and how they may be related to other Society members.
Wanted: The Library is always looking for books and any other Scottish material to be donated to the Library. We also accept Scottish items that can be sold to help raise funds for the on-going operation of the Library.
