JUNE 2017 NEWSLETTER
Summer is upon us and the staff has planned many fun and exciting things for the children, including
field trips, sprinkler days, and special visitors! Watch for more information about these special events,
from your child’s classroom. A few of the classrooms have had staff changes for the summer as a few staff have moved to a different
classroom. You will be receiving a summer letter from your child’s classroom with details about the
summer program. As you know, Deb Bond has recently resigned from her Family Service Provider position to accept a
new positon. We are currently interviewing potential candidates for the position and will have an intro-
ductory welcome event to introduce our new Family Service Provider to all of you. I recently came across some facts that have been researched about quality early childhood programs:
Children who participate in high quality early childhood development programs are:
Less likely to need special education services or to be held back in school.
More likely to graduate from high school, go to college, and be employed.
More likely to be healthier and need less medical services.
Able to contribute to a stronger economy through higher employment earnings.
Less likely to come in contact with the criminal justice system or use its services. This research speaks very strongly about how important quality early childhood programming is. I am
proud to say that our Center does provide quality care and the children are learning something new
and developing their brains everyday!
Have a great month!

Many of our families are aware that Skip-a-Long implements the Conscious Discipline Model in the classrooms. For those of you who are new to the Moline Campus, Conscious Discipline is a comprehen-sive self-regulation program that integrates social-emotional learning and discipline. Conscious Disci-pline addresses the cause of the behavior first, and then focuses on teaching a new, acceptable skill. Unfortunately, children DO NOT come with instructional manuals to help parents navigate difficult times. That being said, I want to share with you a link on the Conscious Discipline website that shares various detailed discipline tips for different forms of behavioral problems. Behavioral topic examples in-clude biting, temper tantrums, power struggles, separation difficulties, etc. If you also have older children in your home, there is a section that includes tips for Tweens and Teens. These discipline tips will help you deepen your understanding of Conscious Discipline, its application and the tools that support it. Be-low is an example of this guidance tool: How do you recognize the difference between a child who is having normal behavior issues and one who needs specialized services? Developmentally, children between the ages of 3-5 years old will test and question authority to determine what is and is not allowed. Children at this age check the limits and boundaries to figure out the expecta-tions and rules of the environment. When the behaviors become persistent and maladaptive to an extreme degree and they impede with the child’s learning process, then it would be recommended that the referral for special services begin. These children may also have an inability to form interpersonal relationships with others and/or inconsistent moods. Some children may exhibit similar behaviors during a stressful time; such as the death of a loved one, recent move, change of schools, or other life changing scenarios. For that reason, it is imperative that the child be observed over an extended period of time and not just referred due to a momentary reaction. Click on the link: https://consciousdiscipline.com/resources/discipline-tips.asp. Take the first step to “downloading calm” into your life and at the same time building and strengthening social-emotional learning into your child’s developmental progress.

swim diaper. We look forward to a wonderful summer with our children.
Hello from the Joeys

are looking forward to all the fun that the summer brings. We will go on field trips, so keep
an eye open for information that will be handed out soon. Tuesday will be our sprinkler day

least a big Happy Birthday goes out to Adalyn on the 26th. Let all the fun begin, welcome

Hello from the Penguins

chilly. Please write your child’s name or initials on the tags of their jackets and boots.
Please put your child’s coat in the bluebag that is hanging on their hook. Please check
your child's box for weather appropriate clothing (pants, shorts, short sleeves, etc.) If
you child is in diapers, please have 1 extra outfit in their box. If your child is in un-
derwear, we would like 3 extra outfits and a change of shoes. Our themes for this
month are Ocean/Fish, Summer, Father’s Day, and Sports. Goodbye to Royce as he is
moving down to Preschool. We are also recommending you bring in bug spray for
your child. Closed toed shoes must be wore on the playground. If your child
wears sandals, please send a pair of shoes to change in to. Be on the look out
for field trip information. Our 1st trip will be June 12th to Camden Park.
Hello from the Zebras
We are required to go outside daily so please dress your child accordingly. Please keep in mind our play-
ground can get pretty muddy. We let the children run and explore so they can get very dirty. Please send
your child in play clothes. With the weather being so unpredictable make sure your child has their name writ-
ten inside any sweatshirt, jacket, coat, etc to avoid mix ups. Also, please check your child’s hallway box to
make sure they have plenty of extra shirts, pants, and underwear in case of accidents or spills. Please check
your child’s classroom mailbox daily for important papers, artwork, etc. If you would like to bring in bug spray
or sunscreen we will start collecting it this month to put on the children daily this summer. Our playground
has a lot of bugs!! We recommend bringing bug spray for your child. This month we will be learning
about Our Favorite Books, Camping, and Sports

Hello from the Giraffes
The Little Llamas have been busy working hard in the month of May, we have
worked on our manners and friendship as well as what it means to be thankful. We have enjoyed having a picnic on the big blue rug in our room one Friday, we
have celebrated several birthdays. We enjoyed a field trip to the Zoo. Maybe you have noticed the artwork in our hallway, first we painted with marbles,
then cotton balls, then sponge squares. Katrina has had several helpful interesting interventions lately such as making stress balls and creating a
bottle to find treasures in. It is in our library ask to see it.
Keep up the hard work Llamas.

Schools out can you believe it!! We have a lot of fun and exciting things planned for summer break,
so please be sure to check the parent board both inside and outside the classroom. It is a require-
