Tasters are a great way of finding out more about college and a subject area of your choice. They also give you a great opportunity to see what college life is all about. You can attend as many Tasters as you want, all you need to do is book your place by contacting the Engagement Team (details below) and complete the Parent/Guardian consent form at the back of this booklet.

Make sure you read all the information in the booklet and take note of any equipment you might need to bring with you. If the Taster requires safety boots and/or overalls and you cannot bring your own, we can provide them - please make sure you indicate your shoe size and overall size when booking your place.

What happens next?Once you have booked your place, we will send you instructions on what you need to do before you come to the Taster, along with a Parent/Guardian consent form which must be signed and returned.

All Tasters are for Year 11 students, free of charge and are held at either our Infirmary Road Campus, Queen’s Park Sports Centre or Lockoford Lane Automotive Centre.

Childhood Studies An introduction to the pathways available in Childhood Studies, the range of careers you can progress to in the future and the work placements available to students.

Time: 9.00am - 12.15pm Location: Infirmary Road

Health and Social Care An introduction to the pathways available in Health and Social Care, the range of careers you can progress to in the future and the work placements available to students.

Time: 9.00am - 12.15pm or 12.30pm - 4.00pm Location: Infirmary Road

Sport An introduction to the pathways available in Sport, the range of careers you can progress to in the future and the work placements available to students. You will also take part in practical coaching and fitness related activities.

Time: 9.00am - 12.15pm Location: Queen’s Park Sports Centre

Sports kit is required.

Tuesday 28th June 2016

Acting A full day workshop based on improvisation and storytelling techniques. You will spend the day exploring acting techniques and creating your own performance.

Time: 9.30am - 4.00pm Location: Infirmary Road

Fashion A full day workshop exploring materials and surfaces which can be manipulated for use on a fashion template.

Time: 9.30am - 4.00pm Location: Infirmary Road

Construction An opportunity to try all construction trade areas including brickwork, carpentry and joinery, plumbing, painting and decorating, and professional studies (surveying).

Time: 9.30am - 4.00pm Location: Infirmary Road

Boots and overalls will be provided.

Hair Try your hand at styling and dressing hair in this hands-on, practical workshop.

Beauty Discover more about the anatomy and physiology of the hand and arm through an introduction to hand and arm massage, manicure and nail art.

Time: 9.30am - 12.30pm Location: Infirmary Road

Foundation Studies - Discover your future An introduction to entry level courses where students can take part in a range of team building activities that include horticulture, animal care, an art competition, the ‘Great Bun Bake-off’ and how to valet a car.

Time: 9.30am - 4.00pm Location: Infirmary Road

Mechanic for a Day Learn about general vehicle service and maintenance, such as engine and chassis technology, tyre fitting, wheel balancing and a health and safety workshop.

Time: 9.30am - 12.30pm Location: Lockoford Lane

Boots and overalls will be provided.

Electrical Engineering Learn how to build and programme Lego robots using core skills in electrical engineering.

Time: 9.30am - 12.30pm Location: Infirmary Road

Mechanical Engineering A basic introduction to CAD and the skills required to use it. You’ll produce a simple drawing using CAD software.

Electrical Installation An introduction to electrical wiring where you’ll have the opportunity to wire a simple circuit.

Time: 9.30am - 12.30pm Location: Infirmary Road

Auto Body and Paint Take part in a variety of activities such as masking, welding, panel repair, air brushing, fabrication, strip and fit panels and vehicle maintenance.

Time: 9.30am - 12.30pm or 2.00pm - 4.30pm Location: Infirmary Road

Boots and overalls will be provided.

Musical Theatre Warm up your voice with a vocal techniques class and take part in the production of a musical theatre song. Those attending this session are strongly advised to attend the acting and dance sessions as well, due to the nature of the skills studied within musical theatre.

Time: 9.30am - 12.30pm Location: Infirmary Road

Dance Take a part in a basic technique class with centre and corner exercises, leading to choreography in the jazz dance style.

Time: 1.30pm - 4.30pm Location: Infirmary Road

Comfortable attire which allows freedom of movement is required.

Graphics Explore the interpretation of book imagery in both 2D and 3D, including cut paper, photography, type and digital techniques using computer software.

Thursday 30th June 2016

Photography Learn how to paint with light and experience what it is like to work in a photography studio. You will make a series of photograms in the dark room and make paper negatives. Finally, you will work in the studio to capture those all-important portrait pictures.

Time: 9.30am - 4.00pm Location: Infirmary Road

Make an Ad in a Day Spend a day as a video producer, learning the key elements of TV production and planning, filming and editing your very own advert. You will learn how to create ideas, basic storyboards and how to use a professional camera and editing software.

In order for your son/daughter to undertake any Taster activities, we require parental consent. All activities are risk assessed in accordance with College policies and procedures and run under the supervision of suitably qualified staff. All activities are within the College campus and would be undertaken as part of a College course.
