Do we live out the things that Jesus has called us to? Or do we just play along? Do we just hope we’re keeping up with the words enough to make it seem like it’s actually us that is saying those words? Do we say we love our neighbor, and then go out and gossip and judge and condemn? Do we say that Jesus came to show everyone love and then go out and point to all because we don’t agree with them? Do we say that we have been forgiven, but then deep in our hearts cling to old grudges and dormant hurts because we don’t know how to let go? Do we say the Lord’s Prayer and words about God’s will and God’s kingdom, and then go out into the world and not care about what happens to creation or about what God really intends for this (continued on page 2)

Last month’s council meeting took place on May 12.

Thanks, It Was Wonderful! Grace Lutheran Church Council wishes to extend

an ENORMOUS “Thank You” to Mary Loyer and Amy Fleming for providing the wonderful music in the combined service on Mother’s Day. Everything sounded great and it was so inspiring to have everyone worshiping and singing together. Truly the Holy Spirit was in the sanctuary that day. Thank you both so much.

The theme of Family Summer Sunday School this year is the Olympics, to coordinate with the Rio Olympics. We will begin with an opening ceremony at the Sunday School picnic on June 26 at Wisehaven Pool (2989 E. V [ ̀:{;>|} ~that Sunday, but it will be POOLSIDE! Worship will :>=; lunch. Children and parents will be involved in the events and plans are to have presenters who will explain the event, give some life clues learned through participation and actually perform the necessary skills.

Cost per person is $5, and we would ask that everyone bring a dish to pass for lunch. Hot dogs, hamburgers, and condiments will be provided. We have a large pavilion for the day, and you are encouraged to bring all your beach goodies to enjoy the day, since  3  3  {=>    3There are myriad activities at Wisehaven (visit www.wisehavenswimmingpool.com to see everything there }

If you have any questions, or would like to help with coordination, please contact Sharon Hont, or any member of Church Council.

The Sunday School programs will continue through Labor Day weekend so plan to come for all or some of the fantastic things that will happen at Grace this summer.

Pastoral Acts

 world? Do we believe the 10 Commandments and then cheapen our relationships with lies and hurtful actions? Do we claim to be disciples and then go out and ignore our calling? Do we say on a Sunday, “Here I am, Lord, send me,” and then Monday morning forget the faith that we just proclaimed? Do we see where God might be calling us and shake our heads and say, “You want me to go there? Nope, no way, didn’t really mean it all that much.”

What kind of faith do we have? What is stirring in our hearts? Is it a faith that strives to live, to be alive and vibrant and active in the world? Or is it one that just goes through the motions? Are our words real or are we just mouthing along to someone else’s words? Are we going out each and every day seeking to bring God’s kingdom, to show God’s love, to share God’s peace, or are we just really, really hoping that we put up a good enough front, a decent enough show to take the lip sync belt?

Peace it Together,Pastor Tina

Strangers in KenyaLast semester

brought about a curious convergence 3)teaching life. First, my online seminary studies brought me to a close examination of the % 3 the Bible. Secondly,

a few missionary friends started watching the TV series The Walking Dead. One raved about it extensively, going so far as calling it Shakespearean. Now, if you know anything about English teachers, you’ll know that calling anything “Shakespearean” is the equivalent of )) They will—nay, they MUST—investigate the claim to see for themselves if the production warrants such a divine title.

Well, The Walking Dead is not quite Shakespearean, ) with a virus which resurrects a miniscule portion of a dead person’s brain, creating fascinating plot lines and challenging moral dilemmas. I’m not a big fan of watching zombie brains explode (which, if you’re uneducated in the ways of zombie extermination, that’s } X )) 3Z 9 $ )) 3Z33me.

The Old Testament—long an object of scorn by contemporary man—is frequently and unfairly judged by modern standards of civilization. The God who (/$- } sin of one person? An irrational tyrant. The God who decrees the annihilation/genocide of an entire enemy 3 } /brutal devil.

We take Old Testament events and place them in our modern world as if the people and their societies are the equivalent of ours. What’s a godly response when constantly surrounded by terror and intimidation? Even if the United Nations were willing to act on your behalf today, they wouldn’t /   ) :>>7

Which brings me to the world of The Walking Dead—a small society of people bands around a common desire for survival and decency in a world rife with brutally violent monsters and savagely immoral human competitors.
