APG has invited the USA Water Polo’s junior, youth and club teams to participate in a contest to show their support for USA Water Polo before the Olympics. The challenge: create a short video that not only shows their competitive and creative spirit, but also pumps up and gets our pistachio-fueled Men’s and Women’s teams ready to compete and win, and promotes the official snack status of American pistachios. By participating, the teams will be automatically entered to win $2,500. The most creative submission will receive a 3-month supply of pistachios. The contest is part of a larger campaign that promotes pistachios as the ultimate snack for athletes and active consumers. The contest’s goal is to build relationships with the next generation of Olympians. To view the entries, search #PistachioPower on Instagram. Pistachio Power! USA! USA! USA!

Honey & Pistachio Chutney Delight
This pistachio chutney is a pure delight!
Serve on top of a good round of brie, on
toast, or a teaspoon in your tea! It also
makes the perfect “giftable” treat. Just
pour some into a jar and tie it up with
a piece of twine or ribbon. It makes the
best hostess gift.
Pistachio-Crusted Cauliflower Steaks
Here’s a delicious plant-based protein
dish. Serve pistachios on hearty
cauliflower steaks, perfect for a
meatless, weeknight meal. The addition
of pistachios elevates the flavor and
gives the steaks the best texture. The
crusting is also amazing on pork chops.

American pistachios were the Official Snack of the 2016
Schneider Electric Paris Marathon on April 2, 2016. More than
48,000 runners received an APG sample pack in their race
goodie bag. Our 100-calorie sample packs not only provided
the athletes with the ideal post-race snack, but the backside of
the bag provided pistachio nutrition facts and comparisons with
other healthy foods. Spectators and runners also viewed the
American Pistachio Growers logo on pre-promotional materials
such as the race mailer and website, and on banners placed at
the beginning and end of the race.

Twenty of Germany’s most influential food, health and lifestyle journalists and bloggers attended APG’s “Cooking Healthy with Pistachios” event in Munich on June 2. APG German nutrition expert, Dr. Ursula Hildebrandt, spoke about the benefits of American pistachios for weight loss. Recent studies such as “Nutrition Attributes & Health Effects” were cited, and many illustrative examples were given. According to Dr. Hildebrandt, pistachios are the perfect “natural pill” that provide many nutritional benefits for health as well as weight-loss. Her credo: Food supplements are not needed if you eat nutritious foods such as pistachios.
After the presentation, Chef Valerie Lanzensberger taught the journalists how to cook a healthy three-course menu with pistachios: Pistachios Celery Broccoli Soup; Pistachio-Shrimp with Purple Broccoli Sprouts and White Bean Puree; Pistachios and Pumpernickel Crunch on Ginger Tofu Mousse; and Pistachio Date Lentils with Watercress Humus and Fried Tofu. The event immediately generated a buzz across social channels with many of the bloggers sharing the good news about pistachios for health, nutrition and weight-management as well the delicious recipes they created at the event on their blogs. NEW APG MEMbErSHIP AD Meet our Growers
THE VALOV FAMILyJimi Valov is a third-generation California farmer. His grandfather, Fred Agop Valov, immigrated to California from Eastern Europe in 1904, and began farming in the 1920s in Kern County, producing potatoes, hay and cotton. “While my grandfather farmed, he also served as a Russian minister in Shafter for 41 years. He helped people in his congregation get started in farming, buying a home or starting a business. That’s what preachers did way back when,” said Jimi. In 1957, Jimi’s father, John Fred Valov, started farming cotton, wheat and other row crops in the Waukena area. According to Jimi, “My father moved from Kern County to Tulare County because land prices were so much cheaper. In Kern County, land prices were $800 to $1,000 an acre.” In Tulare County, he said his father bought I,000 acres from the late Billy Boswell for $200 an acre. Read more …
