Listen! A sower went out to sow.4 And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and atethem up. 5 Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where theydid not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil.6 But when the sun rose,

they were scorched; and since they had no root, theywithered away.7 Other seeds fell among thorns, and thethorns grew up and choked them.8 Other seeds fell on

good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, somethirty. 9 Let anyone with ears listen!"- Matthew 13:3-9, NRSV

Just recently Ive finished an interesting book entitled StickyChurch . Its written by Larry Osbourne, the Lead Pastor ofNorth Coast Church (www.northcoastchurch.com) innorthern San Diego County. North Coast is what one couldcall a mega church with around 9,500 in weekly attendance, spread out over four campuses and 13 weekly worshipservices. Its apparent that North Coast knows what theyare doing when it comes to reaching others for Christ. Theyare creative and innovative in sharing Gods Gospel. AndOsbornes book is focused upon that Great Commissioncalling of God to make disciples by baptizing and teachingfollowers seeking deeper relationship with God. Osborne

writes, Weve often become so focused upon reaching people that weve forgotten the importance of keeping people. And thats the thesis of thisbook: Our churches need to be stickier. Stickier churches are healthierchurches. They not only draw in spiritual window-shoppers and leadthem to Christ; they also grow them up to maturity. As Osbornesuggests its not all about bringing people into the church asmembers yes, thats vitally important. Its just as importantthat churches and their leaders learn how to nurture andencourage the spiritual growth of those members. Itsrelatively easy to get people to enter the front doors of thechurch. Whats harder is keeping them from slipping out theback due to inactivity. Churches need to be stickier weneed to be better about, once people join, helping them tomove forward along their journeys of faith and God-relationship. We need to be intentional in offeringopportunities to more meaningfully connect with God and

others. The focus is upon SPIRITUAL GROWTH

Jesus offers a powerful parable in Matthew 13 focused uponsoil and the seed desiring to grow in those soils. Perhaps youare familiar some falls on the hard ground and are quicklyeaten by the birdsother falls on rocky ground where issprouts but because there is no depth - is quickly scorchedby the sunother seed falls among the thorns and are quicklychoked and have no ability to growand still other falls on

fertile soil where it has the ability to produce fruit. In hisbook Osbourne offers this parable with the thought that in

Jesus day no farmer would ever be satisfied with initial growtkilled off before harvestA crop that didnt last all the way to hawas a financial disaster. And whats interesting to consider is

that not only is Jesus focused on the seed likening it to ourspiritual lives and the ability it has to grow through God-connection but also the soil itself. The soil is very much thecatalyst for growth it either promotes the growth of theseed or causes it to die out. The condition of the soil IS

    VITAL

Which leads me to all of us here at Grace UMC How is thecondition of our soil? Are we a place that not only welcomesfolks in but also encourages their continued growth? Are wehelping our visitors and members to find meaningful pointsof connection (Sunday School, Bible studies, small groupministries) that help them to spiritually flourish? And whatsso important to hear is that WE ALL have a part to play inthe growth of a seed/member. The pastors can only dopart of the planting and nurturing the bulk of the harvest

work is upon you as members of Grace and Gods Kingdom. How are you claiming our calling to help Grace UMC becomethe kind of place where all can grow in spiritual maturity?

I would welcome your prayer and involvement in thisKingdom goal! If youd like to be more actively involved, Iencourage you to connect with Mary Graham, our Servant

Team Leader of Small Group Ministries impassioned abouthelping people connect in meaningful and life-changing ways. She and others are leading us, as a church, in becoming aplace of fertile soil! Lets join together in making GraceUMC a stickier place to worship and serve Christ!

    See you soon!

    Pastor Bryan

Casual Summer Worship We encourage members to "come as you are" for worshipduring June and July! During those months our pastors andchoir will not be in robes, and all are invited to be casuallydressed.
