We get so immersed in the day to day, week to week chores that the good things escape unnoticed – which is a shame as unless we reflect we do not get the sense of balance, or sometimes achievement. Last week I had the (always good) sales trip to ACT and lower coast NSW, it did not start well as I had changed over my calendar and messed up the timing of two appointments, however both booksellers (Dymocks Belconnen & Canberra) worked with me and sent the subscription and stock order through shortly after. The glory book was certainly the Wilkins Farago title “The Hole” – I had to hold back the proper submission until I received a sample and then the smiles and approving signs started to emanate. I wait for these moments as it does make the difference between so many books to be seen that one just uplifts the buyers. My thanks to the following booksellers who have reordered so many times within the month of receipt – Children’s Bookshop Beecroft - 4 times, Readings Carlton 3 times as well as early reorders from Paperchain (ACT), Sun Bookshop (Yarraville) and the NGVA Shop in Federation Square. The next new book from Wilkins Farago is in this list – ''One Red Shoe''The other important book from the sales trip was the Melbourne Books “Returned Soldier” David Tenenbaum (the publisher) rushed me an uncorrected pdf on the Saturday or just before the flight on Sunday

– I had it read by the Tuesday night – tears and all. Thedepth of how the author plummeted to (without really knowing about) PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) shook me up. My Father spent 5 or 6 six years enlisted and only returned with a passion for blocking out those war years – it is likely to have hurt him in the end; James Prascevic on the other hand eventually caught up with what was destroying him and so should we. I am hopeful I can engage support from not only an Australian market for the book but a North American market as well. Last Tuesday was to be an exciting day due to media for some of our books; local radio 3AW started the day with an interview with Kate Swann and Kristina Mamrot the authors of Do you Really Want to Lose Weight? and the “Conversation Hour” on Radio 774 was to have Julie Szego (author of The Tainted Trial of Farah Jama) as the guest; I then was told Susanna De Vries, author of Australian Heroines of World War 1,

was to be the other guest – first time we have had 100% of the highest rating Melbourne Morning radio show ever. By midafternoon the Tainted Trial got to #1 on one of the eBooks sites. Susanna was then approached by Sunrise and they are going to film her laying a memorial wreath at The Shrine next week. The PR juggernaught rolled on the next day with Chris Murphy (Murphy: The Making of CM Murphy: The Son, The Father, The Goals, The Wins and the Triumph of INXS) being on the impressive Radio 702 program with Richard Fidler; later that afternoon Howard Goldenberg was on Rafael Epstein’s show. Next week LNL – Philip Adams will speak with Howard about his new book Carrots & Jaffas. I guess radio reviewers are more content driven than the hierarchy of how reviewers choose for the print reviews. Bookmark our webpage. Follow us on Facebook.

Still my upbeat view of the week was halted when I read of the Australia Council hand outs. Seriously if we read this in the context of SPC or Toyota/GMH government funding there would be an outcry. Why give “our” money to foreign multi nationals to support their own staff training; I don’t support hand outs to car makers, I don’t support cash hand outs to the multinational publishers for staff training – do you?

Yesterday we received the 30 Arthur Upfield files to create eBooks from. These will also be turned into /Large Print/Braille and DAISY. Our negotiations are continuing with the publisher to enable us to have some print editions as well; they will be short run digital printings and we will hold stock to allow them to populate our daily Onix feeds. The publisher Tom Thompson will also get some national radio support for this relaunch and we will do a press release as well to the media. This has taken some two years in the formation of this outcome. I have hopes this sort of venture brings more Australian Classics to the eBook / Short Run digital platform. Our content is available globally so we have succeeded in some of our aims..

Contented selling!DJ

June 2014 New Title ReleasesReturned Soldier

JamesPrascevic provides a brutally honest, first‐hand account of the front lines of combat — witnessing the disturbing  consequences of war for civilians, the thrill of being caught in a firefight, the shock of losing a mate — a n d  of the training that got him into those situations. This is his story of life as an infantryman and the unglamorous aftermath of war that has created a different challenge in combating mental illness.James was a plumber in Victoria, when he decided to enlist as an infantryman in the Australian Defence Force. With 1 RAR he served in Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan, where he was confronted with the horrifying effects of Improvised Explosive Devices. Upon his return from Afghanistan, he completed the Commando Selection and Training Course and most of the Reinforcement Cycle for the Special Forces, but broke his leg in a parachuting incident. That was when the black dog bit, causing him to be medically discharged from the ADF after almost ten years of service. He was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Major Depression, Anxiety and Alcohol Dependence. At first he was silent about it, until he lost his wife, his career and nearly his life. As a result of this, he did fundraising for the Black Dog Institute, set up the website Different Challenge, and crossed Bass Strait in a ‘tinnie’ to raise awareness of mental illness and its often devastating effects. James reminds us about the sacrifices Australian soldiers make for their country, and that there is no shame in admitting you have a mental illness.

Selling Points & MediaJames has become a prominent spokesperson for Returned Soldiers, many of whom have psychological issues. He has appeared on CH10 ‘The Project’, SBS ‘insight’ and has been the subject of many national newspaper stories. He will continue to be a media ‘go to’ person as soldiers are repatriated this year

Unlike other soldier’s books of recent times eg ‘Exit Wounds’, James was an infantryman on the front lines and his stories take the reader into the heart of the battle and the way he tackles his own demons will strike a chord in the Australian public.

Don't Give Me Eggs That Bounce

Don’t give me eggs that bounce: 118 cracking recipes for people with Alzheimer’s is a breakthrough cookbook that  reclaims the enjoyment of food for many who have missed out for too long, making it wonderfully accessible through innovative recipes and extensive practical knowledge.Don’t give me eggs that bounce celebrates—and hopes to give voice to—the dignity of older people, people with dementia and those with eating disabilities by offering nutritious, glorious food across a range of dietary needs, letting the ‘flavours do the talking’. All in the context of being carefully analysed and clinically appropriate. No compromise on taste or safety. Australia’s leading aged care chef, Peter Morgan-Jones, has prepared innovative recipes which draw on his extensive international experience, with one recipe even inspired by cooking for a ‘young prince’ at Highgrove House. Many of the dishes have been shared in his daily work in HammondCare’s dementia cottages, much to the delight of residents and families. He is ably supported by HammondCare experts - dietitian Emily Colombage, dementia consultant Danielle McIntosh and speech pathologist Prudence Ellis who join Peter in writing on how to make mealtimes a pleasurable, social and safe experience in the context of dementia, ageing, swallowing difficulties and texture-modified diets.Such is the skill and experience of Peter Morgan-Jones, even people facing major eating difficulties will find a tasty range of food and drink that they can enjoy. At the same time, people who eat a regular diet will find dozens of recipes, tips and techniques to enhance their culinary experience.Carers are especially supported with time saving techniques, easy options and a special chapter on caring for the carer, along with lists of support organisations and resources.

Oh, and the title… as the book’s introduction says: ‘Eggs cooked just the way you like them are one of the great symbols of choice, health and flavour in food. But when it comes to food for older people and those with dementia, too often eggs have come to symbolise just the opposite. When HammondCare’s Chief Executive, Dr Stephen Judd, wrote about eggs served to some older people as being more like ‘kiln-fired organic pottery’ than real eggs, he sparked a conversation that has led all the way to this book, and beyond. Don’t give me eggs that bounce: 118 cracking recipes for people with Alzheimer’s is a deliberately provocative title aimed at continuing this important food conversation.’ Don’t give me eggs that bounce will be launched by Maggie Beer at Sydney Hilton on June 26. She is already working closely with Peter Morgan-Jones in her own aged care food campaign. Peter will be speaking and cooking at Tasting Australia in Adelaide in late April 2014 and regular features in the media, including The Australian on March 30.

The Boy in the Yellow Dress

Perth in the 1950s. After being caught wearing his mother’s yellow dress, young Victor had to hide any tendency towards gender inappropriate behaviour. But his interest in dancing and theatre (and mooning over Rudolph Nureyev on the telly) were bound to make the façade collapse at some point. Emerging sexuality and the sense of not being ‘at home’ in his body, let alone the world, ran alongside a search for meaning that brought him eventually to a spiritual awakening under the young guru Maharaji …Part family tragedy, part existential comedy, The Boy in the Yellow Dress is a warts‐and‐all account of exile and the subsequent journey homewards that is less about finding a respectable place in the world than an intimate connection with the ultimate source of being.

If ever a memoir captured the Zeitgeist, it’s this one … Wise, funny, surprising at every turn … More than a portrait of growing up gay, it chronicles the wild search for meaning of an entire generation. Amanda Lohrey (2012 Patrick White Award Winner)

Unbeknown to ninety‐four‐year‐old Best Douglas, his Doctor is trying to kill him under a recently passed euthanasia law. At age eight, Best witnessed his mother drown off the rock shelves of Thurrough Beach. Soon after he experienced strange visions. Were they the result of a wounded boy’s mind, or something more profound designed to help him and ultimately humanity?Against a backdrop of rich Australian heritage, the novel strips bare the pivotal events of Best’s life: his obscure aboriginal and convict ancestry; the curious Hole of Thurrough Beach; the tragic losses of loved ones; his budding friendship with Daniel “Oak Legs” Finbar – the war veteran; his unique relationship with Orion, the Nursing Home’s paper boy; and Doctor Fiona Gerard, the lone voice against his death. Can they all combine to protect Best from sinister forces and give meaning to his life in old age?In his debt novel Keepers of Light, Chris Salmon brings an authentic Australian voice to his lovable characters. Genuine, humorous, and at times downright funny, this book is a heart‐warmer. Presenting issues such as aging, euthanasia, and the collision of cultures caused by British settlement, the work is also deeply thought‐provoking. Keepers of Light has the ability to reach across the generations and touch the heart of all Australians.

Inviolate

1813Numb after the pain of an intolerable betrayal, 19 year old Alexandra Broughton turns to her only source of hope – a n  arranged marriage. Resolutely accepting this as her last chance to make a future for herself, she journeys to Scotland to face the unknown.Although Alex makes every effort to settle into her new life, she struggles to suppress the memories of her lost lover’s passionate yet faithless embrace, and remains haunted by a fleeting and impossible love affair.For Alex, this is a time of growing; a coming of age where she turns to her husband in a desperate effort to carve out a life with him, and just as it seems that contentment is within her grasp, disaster strikes.As the war against Napoleon reaches a crescendo, Alex discovers a web of deceit that slowly unravels long‐held secrets to reveal the true meaning of treachery.Trapped in a loveless, violent marriage, and with nothing left to lose, Alex embarks on a fight for survival. Battling the irresistible forces ranging against her, she remains bound to the one man she can never forgive – t h e  one man above all others she can never forget.

About the AuthorKaren Turner was born in Melbourne, Australia. After leaving school, she commenced a career spanning more than twenty years in the Financial Services Industry which presented the opportunity to work in Singapore, Hong Kong, New Zealand, and Australia. Throughout this time she also managed to indulge her first love – music - and over the years performed with innumerable bands and participated in many musical productions and functions. In recent years her vocation shifted to writing training and technical documentation and financial news articles. As an escape from the intensity of the corporate environment, she discovered a passion for fictional prose, which led to Karen’s first book, a rather eclectic compilation of short stories – All That and Everything.Inviolate is Karen’s second novel. It is the long-awaited sequel to Karen’s first novel, Torn, and follows on from where Torn left you wanting more.Karen lives with her husband Stuart and her cats Panda and Katie in Mornington, Victoria. When she’s not hammering away at her computer, she likes keeping fit and catching up with friends. Inviolate continues the story of Alex Broughton, the passionate and determined young woman readers first met in Torn.

June 2014 New Title ReleasesGoing Down Swinging No.35

A Melbourne institution since its founding in 1980, Going Down Swinging (GDS) are makers of fine anthology.

Their annual productions include a boutique book/CD anthology, a unique interactive digital anthology, a literary launch program and an ongoing presence through our website and discussion blog. In 2014 our focus expands to include a stand‐alone series of performance events and live recordings ‘One Night Wonders’.

THE BOOKA chockers print and audio anthology that will take you to the wrong parts of Baltimore, drag you along the Silk Road, breathe cured meats at you in suburban Adelaide then break your heart on a Californian highway. You’ll meet Pavlichenko, the most successful female sniper in history; a Japanese whaler losing himself at sea; a guy struggling with psychedelics at a funeral; and real people who believe they’re mythical creatures trapped in human bodies.

All this is threaded together by our commissioned artist Darren Song, who produces intricate embroidery work on paper. For this project Darren chose eight spreads from vintage editions of Going Down Swinging and embroidered them with his response to the writing in No. 35. The results are beautiful and surprising.

The accompanying audio album features new stories and spoken word from the likes of Anis Mojgani, Angie Hart, Benezra, Adam Gibson, and The Herd's rhythm section playing as Bass Elefant. You can get the album as a digital download.

Kin

Traversing diverse timescales and geographies, resolute in its attentiveness to social and ecological wrongs, Kin is nonetheless open to surprise and pitched towards the potential for renewal and reconnection. This collection composes a pilgrimage of sorts, whose elusive end, however variously essayed, is “to witness the honour of things, to think/the way a leaf swallows the light. ‐ Kate Rigby

Anne Elvey’s poems inhabit and elaborate an ecotone; they speak a shore—“the thin place between the word and the thing”, between the living and the dead, between here and beyond, the diurnal and the eternal. These poems are the world without and the world within; they are both wild and refined, ecstatic and scholarly; they are a “drawing room of rain”. Elvey’s poems walk a studious witness.‐ Mark Tredinnick

Kin introduces a poet of spare, clean lines, acute lyrical perception, and delicate care for the world and people about her. It is a book to read and re‐read. Kevin Hart

About the AuthorAnne Elvey is author of three poetry chapbooks: Stolen Heath (MPU, 2009), Claimed by Country (PressPress, 2010) and Bent toward the thing (Rosslyn Avenue, 2012) and managing editor of a new online journal Plumwood Mountain: An Australian Journal of Ecopoetry and Ecopoetics. She is a chapbook editor and committee member of Melbourne Poets Union.Her poems have been shortlisted in the Peter Porter Poetry Prize 2012, the Newcastle Poetry Prize 2011 and the PressPress chapbook award 2009 and highly commended in the Max Harris Poetry Prize 2008. She won the page seventeen poetry competition 2008. Anne was recipient of a Writers Victoria Writing @ Rosebank fellowship in 2011

Brief description: In his powerful fifth collection John Leonard dissects contemporary life and ideas in intense, but human, lyric poetry. This four‐part collection begins with a section of meditative poems of everyday moments, often of great peace (‘the Hope and Trust of the Times’). Following a section of satires on the complacencies and delusions of our world, a section on poetry and other arts reinstates a feeling of the grounded and the valid (‘Sadness is no Longer Sad’). The final section, (‘Change beyond Change’), is a series of reflections on the end‐game our society is playing with the global environment, and necessarily ends on a sombre note.

Poems from this collection have appeared in: The Canberra Times; Contrapasso 4; Island; LiNQ;Meanjin; Overland;Social Alternatives 25; The Weekend Australian and, in translation, When the Moon Is Swimming Naked, Australasian Poetry for the Chinese Youngster (2013).

Vula Bevalile 2nd Edition

Second Edition with two new stories

Vula Bevalile: Letters from a Young Doctor is a collection of vignettes written over seven years by Australian doctor Maithri Goonetilleke, who has been contributing his time voluntarily in Swaziland—a country devastated by extreme poverty and the HIV and AIDS epidemic. Through the stories, the reader is taken on an incredible journey across a landscape of extreme adversity and medical and economic hardship. But it is the final, overwhelming sense of humanity that is most striking and empowering. The ultimate outcome for the reader is a profound understanding of a people with enormous resilience, pride, humility, and courage.

This book calls on us to think again, to ask ourselves what we are doing in our own lives and why. – Paul A. Komesaroff (Professor of Medicine and Director, Centre for Ethics in Medicine and Society, Monash University, and Executive Director of Global Reconciliation, Australia)

These beautiful letters express a burning desire on the part of a physician to reach out and live from a place of divine love. – Wayne Dyer (internationally renowned author and speaker in the field of self‐development)

In beautifully limpid and pared‐back prose, Maithri Goonetilleke distils his experiences in Swaziland .... Words such as “uplifting” and “profound” cannot begin to capture the quiet potency of the stories he tells about the people he works with and treats. – The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald

Reprinted - Now AvailableOur House is Not in Paris

Susan Cutsforth and her husband, Stuart, are 'ordinary' people living an extraordinary life. They both work full‐time: one is a teacher librarian of thirty years, and the other, a middle‐level clerk in the public service. But, as Susan recounts, they own a holiday house, Pied de la Croix, in Cuzance, a small village in south‐western France ‐ the other side of the world. And not only that, this petite maison required significant renovating, which they accomplished almost singlehandedly during their working holidays.Our House is Not in Paris is a story of pushing boundaries, aiming high and, most of all, taking risks. With humour, poetry and insight, Susan's story shows that you can do more than simply dream...

Here is a sample of reviews being posted by readers:

'On more than one occasion I had to visit my local deli in Sydney and buy French cheese and bread to join the author on the steps of her rural French house.'

'What a catchy title. What a great little holiday read. I loved this book. I could think of nothing better than to buy a little house in France...with this book I was able to partake in the journey with Susan Cutsforth. I only wish my Kindle could show photos!'

'Wonderful and touching! Thank you for your story! It was both wonderful and touching. I have not renovated in France but have the same hard work and endurance for projects in my bones. Husband and I spent time in France this year. I learned a touch of French from the library Michael Thomas tapes. I am still infatuated with France and still watch the movies and read the books. I can't get enough. I really enjoyed your adventures. So far away, but nonetheless, so determined to successfully carve out a life there. I will continue to think of both of you and will secretly wonder if every weather vane I see is yours! Bonjour!'

Dying Embers

“My mind had created a monster in the next terrace…”Welcome to the world hidden behind the everyday. These stories of urban strangeness explore what goes on within the dying embers of the fire, once the heat has almost gone.An historic building holds the key to a terrible secret from Letherby’s youth. A passenger on an international flight finds out that he is not master of his own destiny – finding out who is, though, is quite another matter. Rural Australia proves less welcoming than Preston had hoped, forcing him to confront the guilt from his past. Pocock witnesses something calamitous on the river bank which changes the course of his life. The alien landscape of a network of warehouses provides the background to a remarkable transformation. An ill-fated property search leads first to admission, then to a strange form of retribution, and ultimately to a terrifying reunion.About the Author M.R. Cosby lives in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney and writes strange stories. He has had a lifelong interest in dark literature, which started after being exposed, by accident, to the Pan collections of horror stories at a tender age. He began writing his memoirs some years ago, which, though still incomplete, provided the inspiration for his first collection of strange stories, Dying Embers. Martin was the Creative Director of a large publishing firm, working on a varied stable of magazines. During this time he contributed to many features as a journalist, and his appetite for writing was thoroughly whetted. Martin is currently looking after his family, and writing a novel.

The Only Evil

From the fantasy author of The Eleven Kingdoms trilogy and the Triumvirate trilogy, Bevan McGuiness, comes his highly anticipated thriller novel, The Only Evil. After great success in the fantasy genre, Bevan McGuiness explodes into a new genre with a fascinating tale of a coming-of-age story mixed with a road trip novel set in Western Australia, where the only true evil is ignorance.Socrates once said, “…not only is ignorance not bliss, but it could well be the only evil…”This is a lesson that Moses Dylan will need to learn quickly if he wants to stay alive. Having graduated school a sheltered and slightly awkward boy, he discovers a world just outside his door totally alien to him. Quickly, he realizes that girls grow into women and innocent schoolboy crushes can become dangerous. When faced with such a danger, he flees into the Western Australian outback to find that he is running for his life, where his ignorance could cost him his life and where he comes face to face with not only the truth but also his own duplicity.About the Author Bevan McGuiness has had a number of short stories and essays published, together with articles on education research. He has had six books published – a mainstream novel and two fantasy trilogies. He has worked as a geophysicist, factory hand, laboratory assistant and high school chemistry teacher. In 2009 he completed his Doctoral studies in Education. He is a native of Western Australia where he lives with his family and the world’s least intelligent Cocker Spaniel.

The Flora of Melbourne is a resource that assists in the recognition and botanical identifi cation of species while encouraging an awareness of the interrelationships between indigenous plants and animals. It identifies the usefulness of these species, to the local Aborigines in the past, and to all who wish to understand our diminishing natural environment in the present.The Flora of Melbourne works on a few different levels. It provides an important record of the plant life that developed in the Greater Melbourne area over a long period of time. It indicates the probable distribution of plant communities and the species within them prior to European settlement, based on historical data, remnant vegetation, and the prevailing climatic and soil conditions of each area.At another level it records the breakdown of these important relationships that has led to both the extinction of individual species and the reduction in the range of species from a number of locations across the entire Melbourne area.Finally, Flora of Melbourne is a tool to help us nurture or repair such relationships in an attempt to maintain or re‐establish these habitats and the plants within them.

Spotlight on Hyland House Bush Seasons

At its most convincing level, this book shows in awesome detail just what it is that we stand to lose when we fail to vigorously protect and conserve even relatively small areas of the little natural landscape that remains of Australia's once‐vast bush and woodlands. At another level, it represents the author's passion and dedication to the environment in general ‐ and her abiding affection for this particular piece of it. She  spent over 15 years of her life studying the plants and creatures in this scrap of remnant vegetation and illustrated them with detailed drawings and enchanting, delicate watercolours. At its most modest level, this beautiful book is a month‐by‐month record of the yearly cycle of interdependent plant and animal life found in a tiny, 45‐hectare woodland nature reserve in north‐eastern Victoria, presenting an intricate picture of its complex and delicate biodiversity.

The Last Quarter: A Trilogy

Martin Flanagan has been writing about Australian football for 25 years. The Last Quarter brings together three of his books that sum up that period. In 1970 he re‐created the grand final of that year, said to be the best of the 20th century, by talking to the players, coaches and umpire. Southern Sky, Western Oval, written in 1993, portrays the events of a season set against the backdrop of a club, Footscray (now the Western Bulldogs), fighting to survive. The Game In Time of War, which starts with the first game after 9/11 and ends with the first game after the invasion of Iraq, describes an unnerving period in Australian history through the eyes of a man who distracts himself by watching football. The collection ends with an essay about the controversy that marked the AFL's 150th year and Flanagan's

After the success of the first 'Red in the Centre' journey for radio, Monte Dwyer was commissioned by Channel 7's Sunrise programme to go bush and re-create his spontaneous storytelling style for television. But not everything went as planned. This book follows Monte's evolution from struggling technophobe to self-assured multimedia something-or-other, as he travelled the land in search of the stories seldom told. 'Through the Crooked Lens' is a celebration of life beyond suburbia, a quirky snapshot of remote Australia taken by a man with an eye for detail and an acute sense of fun.

Are they really turning the old atomic test site at Maralinga into a tourist park? Why did Gulflanders know 2011 was going to be a monster wet season? And what exactly is the H chord anyway? If you don't know the answers you need to read this book. Monte Dwyer is a freelance multimedia journalist and a fine storyteller to boot. Looking for the H Chord is the third in the 'Red In The Centre' series and his best yet. From the Qld floods in early 2010, through The Great Victoria Desert and the Kimberley, across the Top End into Arnhem Land, then all the way back to Qld just in time for the unprecedented 2011 wet season, Monte explores the "cobwebby corners" of Australia and her people. Early in 2007 I was scrounging around for publicity for my first book (Slapped by an Angel, co-authored with Kym Crosbie), when I was presented with an interesting counter-offer by Charles Wooley, who I knew from my television days at Channel 9. In essence the deal was I could plug Slapped all I wanted, providing I jumped in a campervan and ventured out 'where the horizon meets the sky', sourcing and broadcasting stories for Charles' radio program, Across Australia. So out I went. When I set off I had no real idea what to expect, indeed I was too pre-occupied with trying to promote the book to pay much attention to what was going on around me. But slowly the journey changed me, and one by one the people I encountered opened up my narrow, city-centric view of the bush, and left me with a snapshot of rural Australia early in the twenty-first century. I spoke to many hundreds of people engaged in all sorts of weird and wonderful pursuits, and had the rare experience of seeing the country through the eyes of the people who know it best. In other words, this was no holiday jaunt from one tourist attraction to another, but an honest look at life in regional Australia. From drought to flooding rains, through changing seasons and federal governments, I wandered the country listening, learning and gathering as many threads as I could manage, before sewing them together to form this patchwork quilt of book called Red in the Centre.
