Heard and “Overheard”(Congregation news compiled by Barb Ball)

It’s that time of year again, the end of the school year! You can almost hear the strains of Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance in the air as the graduates get ready for the occasion of a life time.

Kay and Hee Moon are proud to announce that their youngest daughter, Sarah, will receive a Doctor’s degree

in music at her graduation from Indiana University at Bloomington. Sarah has been concentrating her music studies in playing and teaching the organ.Sarah Moon graduated Sylvania Southview High School in 2004. She received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Oberlin Conservatory of Music studying the organ and harpsichord in 2009. Beth Riggle, daughter of Pat and John Riggle, received her M.D. degree (Doctor of Medicine) on Graduation Day, May 16, 2014, at the University of Michigan Medical School. Beth graduated in the top ten percent of her class. In June, Beth will pack up her car and dog and head west to Salt Lake City, Utah for the next five years training in Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Child and Adult Psychiatry at the University of Utah.

Honors don’t always go to those graduating, faculty members receive deserved recognition, also. That’s what happened at Ohio University last month. Dev Poling-Robinson received an award for the 2013-2014 Ohio University Outstanding Professor for Regional Campuses. This award is given to only one person across the five campuses serving the Ohio University. Dev Poling-Robinson is the daughter of proud parents, Bruce and Nanci Poling.

Retirement is sometimes considered the ultimate reward – as it brings with it the knowledge of a life well spent. This is true of Linda Smith who recently retired from serving forty-five years in the field of nursing. Linda spent thirty-three of those years at The Toledo Hospital as a floor nurse and, most recently, in the Pre-Op section. Linda rewarded herself with the first trip of her retirement years. She and her friend Gina spent ten wonderful days in Portugal. Their trip began in Lisbon; from here they boarded a riverboat for a cruise of the Dowa River region. The cruise took them through the vineyards and olive grove areas of Portugal.

Thanks to all who contributed to this month’s article. News of you and your family’s events and activities are welcome and appreciated. Send to Barb Ball 419 824 -7906 or bar1tom2 @bex.net.

There is a tremendous need for food and toiletries for the Feed Your Neighbor Program. Each Sunday,

there will be a specific item listed in the bulletin for those wishing to participate. There will be marked boxes on carts

in the Narthex and near the Hansen Hall doors.

Feed Your Neighbor

Led by the Spirit… …meet Elder Ron Bick

Elder Ron Bick has been a member at Christ Presbyterian Church for two years, but he came to us with lots of Presbyterian experience. Ron and his wife, Jill, transferred to CPC from First Presbyterian Church of Maumee, where Ron had served as a Deacon, a member of the

Administration Team, and took part in many mission projects.

Ron was born and raised in Toledo. He attended St. Catherine’s grade school, graduated Start High School, and the University of Toledo. Ron majored in Electrical Engineering and is employed in this position at Johns Manville in Waterville. When he is not working or on a mission trip, Ron enjoys playing golf and jogging.

Ron met Jill shortly after he graduated UT and they married soon after Jill graduated. They have two sons; One who is an engineer and lives and works in Indiana and another who is working on his PHD in Bio-chemistry at the University of Cincinnati.

As an elder at CPC, Ron serves on the Stewardship committee and the Mission Team. Ron believes we are all called to serve and feels his spiritual life has been enriched by serving in his different capacities as an elder, and by being challenged by Tom and Kris’ sermons and leadership.

In addition to opportunities to volunteer at the General Assembly of the PCUSA, CPC’s Christian Discipleship Team will be taking a group of CPC members to the opening worship and election of the moderator of the 221st General Assembly. The opening worship service will be a spectacular opportunity to see the glory of God. And, it would be wonderful for us to have a strong showing of CPC members to participate in this wonderful worship experience. We will also have the opportunity to witness the election process of the Moderator of the 221st General Assembly. The Moderator will serve for two years as the chief spokespersons for the PCUSA. This is bound to be a great experience for those who will take the time to attend. There will be opportunities to sign up to attend the opening of the GA on Sunday mornings over the next few weeks. For more information, please contact Barbara D. Brownlee at 419-381-2088 or [email protected].

From June 14 to 21, 2014, Detroit Presbytery will host over 3,000 guests for the 221st General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The General Assembly is a biennial meeting which brings together commissioners and advisory delegates from the 172 presbyteries, as well as observers from around the world. This year’s Assembly will be held at the COBO Center in downtown Detroit.

There will be 2,000 volunteer opportunities before and during the General Assembly and YOU are invited to become a volunteer or attendee or both. As a volunteer older than 14 years of age, most shifts are 4 hours, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and, your badge will waive the $70 attendance fee, and give you free access to most GA events during the entire week! It will be a golden opportunity to see the larger Presbyterian Church at work, and how each of us plays a pivotal role in it.

If you want to volunteer for any of the many opportunities available at the G.A., registration is required and must be done ON-LINE. For a complete listing of job descriptions and easy sign-up, go to www.presbyteryofdetroit/cola and look for the “Volunteer@GA221” button. On the volunteer form, where it asks to which Presbytery you belong, select “Maumee Valley Presbytery”. Where it asks to which church you belong, move to the section for “other” and fill in with “Christ Presbyterian Church”. Once you have completed the registration form, you will be given the opportunity to select which tasks you would like to volunteer for.

If you do sign up online as a volunteer, please let Barbara know so we can keep a record of Christ Presbyterian Church’s involvement and support of the 221st General Assembly. Contact Barbara D. Brownlee at 419-381-2088 or [email protected]. See YOU at the G.A., June 14-21, 2014

The CPC Special Events Team would really like some pie! We are asking the women of CPC to help by baking pies to share during fellowship time after each of the worship services on Father’s Day, Sunday, June 15. We are in need of enough pies to share with approximately 200 people. If you would be willing to bake (or bring a purchased) pie, please contact Chris Spetka: [email protected] or by calling the church office: 419-475-8629.
