"The Wall That Heals"A 250-foot long, half-scale replica of the Washington, D.C., Vietnam Veterans Memorial visited the Decatur Public Library in May. Reading over 58,000 names is overwhelming, but the exhibit displayed photos, belongings and stories about the soldiers that brought the names to life. Guests could visit www.vvmf.org/Names to locate their loved ones' names.

The Decatur Public Library hosted a Vietnam War memorabilia exhibit the entire month of May 2013. The exhibit featured items on loan from people in the community who served during the Vietnam Era.

7 gardens. 5 stops. 2 brothers side by side. 2 sisters side by side. 1 waterfall. 1 enclosed raised garden system. And some chickens. This Garden Walk is going to be epic. The 2013 iteration of the Macon County Master Gardeners annual tour promises to be tops all over, thanks to the garden hosts clever juxtaposition of the usual and unusual. One thing I especially love about this years gardens is that theyre you and me gardens, says Co-Chair Carolyn Wallen. You go home and say, I can do that!In addition to gorgeous plants and stellar gardens, sights that visitors can expect to see on this years tour include-a garden with tree grafting, including what the owner has dubbed a tree on a stick-a garden with chickens (we hear the cute little cluckers follow visitors around like puppies)-a garden featuring a hand-built working waterfall-a handmade drip irrigation system for hanging baskets-a wood enclosure around raised beds to repel deer and rabbits-a country chic garden with a decorated potting shed and other accents-a lovely strolling garden with winding paths for relaxing, peaceful exploring

More than just for looking, this tour focuses on teaching, too. Its always so beautiful, and people get ideas for their own gardens, says Co-Chair Lori Jensen. We have a handout at every garden, so people can learn something at every stop. The set-up of this years Garden Walk packs in even more ideas7 gardens in 5 stops, thanks to 2 brothers living side by side and 2 sisters living side by side, and all agreeing to host. Talk about meant to be! says Carolyn. The tour typically draws upwards of 800 people, and this year, conscious of traffic crunches, organizers have arranged for a shuttle to at least one location. Its just one way the Master Gardeners have mastered making the Garden Walk one of summers must-go events. The 2013 event runs June 9 rain or shine from 3 to 7 pm and features gardens on the southeast side of Decatur. Refreshments will be served, and acoustic guitarist Billy Galt will perform at a select location. Save by buying your tickets in advance.

Get There: Macon County Master Gardeners Annual Garden WalkJune 9, 3 to 7 pmTickets: $10 in advance, $12 at the doorBuy tickets at Cedar Lake Gardens & Gifts, Connies Country Greenhouse Pershing Rd. location, The Farmers Market, The Garden Path, Haines & Essick, The Secret Garden, and Tournesol, or every Master Gardener has tickets available. For questions or more information, call 877-6042 or visit web.extension.illinois.edu/dmp/.

Its June, and its time to own our summer. And if its a staycation year for you, then own that, too. No more flipping through the calendar thinking, Maybe we can get away before Labor Day. NO. Its time to embrace our staycation the same way we embrace the rest of reality: We drink.

So this month we asked you,

what do you drink when youre on vacation? (And if you only drink it on vacation, even better.)

Coffee drink 18%Beer 14%Margarita 14%Pia Colada 12% Wine 9% Gin & Tonic 6% Diet Coke and Rum 6% Soda 6% (Its the only time I let myself drink it!)Vodka Drinks 6% (UV Blue, please!)Monster Energy Drink 3%Iced Tea 3%Mojito 3%

We like our coffee, and the more foo foo it is on vacation, the better.

What kind of a vacation are we talking about? A real vacation? It would be a margarita. A realistic vacation? Probably iced tea because we didnt go anywhere. Its time to salt the rim of your glass because this year were having a real staycation.

Based on 2010 Census data, the margin of error for this survey is +/- 16.56%. Seriously, this is the opposite of scientific.

The Food Dude is not a professional critic. He just really, really likes food.

    THE FOOD DUDE10

My Awesomely Delicious Oakwood AdventureAs a local foodie, nothing grinds my gears more than hearing someone say, Man, theres nowhere cool to eat in this town!As any devoted reader of this column knows, thats totally NOT true! There are lots of great places in Decatur to grab a bite to eat. Heck, in some areas you can do a whole days worth of eating without leaving one block! One of those areas is around the intersection of Oakland and Wood Streets or, as most know it now, Oakwood. So I set out to eat all my meals for the day in this area, and heres how it wentAfter eating breakfast at home (oh dear food gods, please bring Blue Eggs & Ham back!), Mrs. Food Dude and I set out for the day. Around mid-morning, we were feeling the urge for a little something sweet, so our Oakwood journey began at Lanas Cakewalk. Whats great about this place is that not only can you get great custom-made cakes and other sweets, but you can also pop in and grab a small quick treat, too. I went with the Mommy Q (their version of a Susie Q), and the Mrs. went with a fudge iced peanut butter cookie. They were both the best kind of sweet: not too overpowering but not completely lacking in flavor. In short, awesome! After that (and a few more errands), we returned to the area to hit up The Winery. For those who dont know, The Winery has been serving great burgers for what seems like forever, and up until last year, that was the only sandwich you could get. But now theyre blessing the dining public with

two new options: grilled chicken or grilled pork tenderloin. Seeing as our snack hadnt worn off, we opted to split a grilled chicken sandwich, and it didnt disappoint! It was nicely seared on the outside and juicy on the inside. When you add a bag of potato chips and an ice-cold beer to that, youve got a winner of a lunch! After a stop home, we got together with some friends to finish our run through the West End. Our first stop was at Lock Stock and Barrel. Like The Winery, Lock Stock has been in town almost longer than anyone can remember, and theyve been putting out great food the whole time. We stopped by for an appetizer and went with the Mexi Skins. What you get are perfectly cooked potato skins topped with taco meat, tomatoes, onions, cheese, green peppers, and salsa and sour cream for dipping. Delicious! For dinner, we hopped across the street to Donnies Homespun Pizza. In the short time its been open, Donnies has established itself as one of the most unique and delicious restaurants in town. We decided to switch it up, try something different and have the chicken pesto pizza, and it delivered! It has chicken, mozzarella and parmesan cheeses, spinach and a pesto cream sauce. Its kind of like really good fettuccini alfredo on a pizza, which is basically amazing! So there you have it! The next time you have the craving for a culinary adventure, save the gas, and have one here!

$2.00 / 2 Scoops from Pastabilit ies Italian Gril l134 East Main Street, Decatur

Recently, I had this great idea that I would make ice cream with my new Kitchen Aid Mixer attachment. There was but one glitch in the plan. It takes 15 hours (minimum) to properly chill the freeze bowl. As Sweet Brown put it, "Ain't nobody got time for that!"

We all know that when you have dessert on the brain it needs to happen right now. So I called a friend and headed to Pastabilities to try the Gelato. Plan B is now officially plan A. You can choose two scoops for $2 with each additional scoop at just $1.

My favorites so far are the regular Chocolate (super rich and creamy) and the Cosmic Crunch. Next up: taste testing a Moscato Float!

Kid KrazyMorning dawns sunny and sultry in the Soy City, and after a quick scrub and go, you and the hooligans pile into the Swagger Wagon.

As you buzz purposefully up 51 North (or Water Street, depending on which way you lean), a piquant scent fills the air. Mouth watering, glands salivating, you pull into Golden Glaze, and after a brief yet vigorous inner argument, secure a spot in the north lot (more room to maneuver the minions in and out of the vehicle and much less traffic).

A no-less-vigorous debate leads you to the perfect choice of a cinnamon pinwheel, chocolate long john, plain cake and perfectly massive bear claw, and you settle into a table by the window.

Sugar-fortified and ready for bear, you reverse down 51 and across Eldo, making your way over the lake toward Scovill Zoo. You pull in, purchase admission plus carousel and train

Friends or relatives coming in? Looking for some new inspiration? Either way, try one of

these daytrip ideas on for size.

Not sure what kind of outing youre after? Weve put together a couple of possibilities

to get you going. Picture it

passes and head in. (Mental note: Book a Safari Party for the animal-loving youngests upcoming birthday.)

Faced with 400 animals from six continents, you may not be quite sure where to begin, but you forge ahead. If its June 8, youre pleased to see its World Oceans Day at the Zooextra fun and festivities for frolic! On any given day, June or other, you hit the Endangered Species Carousel and the Z.O.&O. Express Train.

Hours later, exhausted from slapping paws and claws with the locals, you mosey east to fill up and feast at the Krekels Mt. Zion. Immediately at home in the kitchsy-kitsch, you prevail upon on the purveyors for thin-seared special recipe burgers all around, then pile on sides of fries for good measure (and good eatin). You slide out of the burnt orange booth for one more order: handmade cones and shakes (lemon for you of course), then hit the road and make your way back across D-town.

In the West End, you land at the Fairview Family Aquatic Centers splash pad, spend some quality time with a 9-foot-tall serpent, dodge some geysers, even show your skills on the springboard and get in a little sand volleyball before the afternoons through.

Refreshed and ready for action, you make a quick change, then head down Eldo to pull into Tastys Chicago Grille. Of course the Chicago dogs cant be beat; perhaps make it a Coney with chili? Sloppy enough to be good but controlled enough for no forks. Eat outside on their patio, and spills wont matter!

Next you get out the wet wipes, then find an after-dinner treat at the nearest frozen slush cart (like the one on Pershing in front of Subway). This en route to an evening performance of the Decatur Park Singers. Music, mood and entertainmentthe perfect cap to a kid krazy daytrip in Decatur!

Culture CourseStarved for culture or just in need of some nouveau ideas? You and your partner in crime fuel up for your days adventure with a leisurely stop at West Main Village, starting at Wildflour Artisan Bakery & Caf (might we suggest the almond croissant alongside a Main Street Mocha?).

Next you slide down the block to pop in Earthen Pottery and explore the always-evolving inventory of local and global art and pottery (new favorites include hand-blown glass) and a clothing boutique. On the way out you pause to take in the massive hand-painted mural on the exterior wall.

Your feet dont fail you on the quick walk to Merchant Street, where you wander in and out of some of Decaturs gems. You grab a bag of vanilla corn at Dels Popcorn Shop, snag a personalized wine tumbler from Giggles and pick up some new French milled soap at Tournesol.

High on life and popcorn, your journey takes you to Norway, and the International Arts Experience at the Madden Arts Center. Much later (has it been minutes, hours?) youre steeped in the countrys traditions and culture from carved trolls (!) to costumes and had your fill of rosemaling but need some rejuvenation.

Back to Merchant Street, your tastebuds take you to Robbies Grille. To start, you request the Bayou Shrimp (no longer a menu item but not to be missed); after the burn cools, you tuck in to a new take on an American classic with the double Tony, an Angus burger quartered and served on whole wheat toast with house-made marinara for dipping.

Sated and sassy, you move a mere block west to The Decanter, where the days wine tasting is well underway, and reds and whites alike await your opines. Bottles in hand, you leave (not weave) down a few storefronts for the perfect aprs dinner snack, a Sea Salt Delight cookie from Coneys Cookies.

Continuing a theme, you head east to get your vine on with an acoustic performance at Long Creek Vineyards. The afternoon whiles away quickly amidst tunes and tastings; soon the sun sets and your stomach awakes.

Answering the call, you move toward Water Street and destination McGorrays Golf & Grille for a casual-yet-gourmet evening of exploration and entertainment. Your course begins with the Stuffed Mushrooms Rockefeller and progresses to the bliss that is Charlies Lobster Mac & Cheese. The 19th hole could involve indoor golf, 100 craft and domestic beers or just good friends and fellowship, at your leisure.

    FUN FACT

Not all penguins live in cold climates! The penguins coming to the Scovill Zoo will be a species native to Central America or Africa and won't mind our crazy weather.

Its June now, and schools out for summer (cue Alice Cooper). Freedom, folly and wonder fill the days and nights as the sun takes over.
