An Update from Staff Parish Relations Committee

It is again spring time and like our pastor, we are all scheduling vacations and summer study time. Pastor Jeong is planning a summer full of travel and study which has been reviewed and approved by Staff Parish Relations Committee. He is completing his doctoral class work this summer. These classes are a continuation of the doctoral program he began prior to his appointment at FOUMC and fulfill a major portion of the doctoral program. Along with this doctoral program our pastor has continued to take advantage of continuing education opportunities that focus on areas of his pastoral position. Below is a summer schedule for Pastor Jeong. It includes a list of the days he will be traveling to Korea and participating in continuing education classes and conference events. Continuing education and participation in the annual conference are highly recommended by the church conference. Vacation: May 20 – June 10

♦ June 2: Sermon will be presented by Don Fado who will also conduct communion ♦ June 9: Sermon will be presented by a reconciling speaker

Conference Family Retreat: August 6 – 8 (Tuesday – Thursday)

♦ Our pastor will deliver the sermon the Sunday prior and the Sunday after the retreat. Continuing Education:

♦ June 19 – 22 (Wednesday – Saturday) Annual Conference – a conference required activity ♦ July 1 – 19 Doctoral Classes

♦ July 7: Sermon will be given by our pastor ♦ July 14: Sermon will be given by Dr. Dave Thompson (a retired pastor) will

present information on UMCOR ♦ July 21: Service will be lead by Judy Shearer on the Annual Conference

Each of the continuing education events focuses on issues that will directly benefit our church. Staff Parish has encouraged him to participate in these events. The scheduled leave is not an expense to our budget but will provide valuable information for our church and add to his spiritual leadership. We appreciate your support of our pastor during these training periods. The pastor has made arrangements for Mary McCollum to be available during his absences. She and our Caring Ministry group can be contacted at any time for support. If you should have any concerns or questions about these absences, please discus these with a member of SPRC. The members include Elaine Bach, Ben Couch, Dick Easterbrook and Gretchen Hatfield. We take full responsibility for supporting these dates as our Pastor continues to increase his pastoral skills which will ultimately benefit our church. Thank you all for your support and have a wonderful summer.

Please pray for comfort and peace of mind for Margie Jurach and family after the passing of her mother in May.

Prayers of healing and comfort go out to Virginia Wells’s son Ed in Chicago after his diagnosis of cancer.

Please pray for Terri Himes, her mother, and her family as her mother moves to the Atrium Independent Living to be closer to Terri. Please pray for a smooth transition for her mother and for peace of mind for Terri.

Prayers of safe travel go to Pastor Jeong, Youngjae, and Jacob as they visit family in Korea.

Prayer Requests

Prayers of Joy Prayers of joy and happiness go to Karenza Hatfield and her family. Michele Louise Samcoff was born May 28 at 5:01 pm weighing 8.5 pounds. Mother and baby are doing great! Please share prayers of joy and thanksgiving for Susan Gutierrez and Michael Doyle. Michael’s cancer surgery was successful and he is in remission. From Susan, “Thank you, each and every one of you, for your continued love and support. Thoughts of you keeping us in your embrace has helped us, and will continue to help us as we walk the road of survivorship. I know only too well that the road does not end here - it is a whole new beginning of a different kind of healing.”

Nancy Klanjac, Elaine Bach, and Virginia and Loren Guffey who regularly help with administrative tasks for the church office.

♦ Thank you, Renee Meyer, for joining the Jiffy Fixers!

♦ Thanks to Betty Phillips for her welcoming words at the beginning of worship services during Pastor Jeong’s absence.

♦ Thank you, Mary McCollum, for hosting a missionary presentation on short notice.

♦ A big thank you to the Trustees for the new directional signage. It helped our visiting missionary find the library!

Hi to all of you (or y'all in Southern talk), We are now in Florida. Our 4,000 mile trip has finally ended, and we are both happy and worn out. We stopped at six places in California and Nevada before heading east. We had originally planned to also go to the Midwest to see my two sons, but we didn't have the time or energy to do it. That will probably happen in July or August (Florida is hot and humid in the summer!). The drive itself was beautiful. We had never seen the desert before--it is beautiful and overwhelming. Then you arrive in Dallas and everything is green. We drove along the Gulf of Mexico near Mobile and had lunch outside looking at the Gulf---gorgeous. But after three weeks of driving, seeing the sign that said "Florida" was a relief. Saturday and Sunday were spent napping and looking for a house to rent. Two houses look like good choices, and today we're waiting for the real estate person to call and say, "You have a house." Our furniture is supposed to arrive at the end of the week. Maybe we will be settled soon! There is no way I can adequately thank everyone for the wonderful send-off party you had for me. It was an overwhelming, kind, and generous thing to do. I was full of tears all afternoon. The church has been a huge part of my life for many years, and it is hard to leave. Thank you for the celebration, and even more thank you for all you have given me again and again for 22 years. I miss you. You will always be in my heart. Dan Hardt

Let’s Wrap Things Up by Ellen Frosch, Finance It’s time to wrap up our pledge drive and finalize our pledge numbers. The Finance Committee thanks everyone for their encouragement and support during this year’s pledge drive campaign. Where do we stand? As of today, May 28th, we have 54 pledges totaling $114,336 for the Church. This is a good start for us. But we have 129 potential pledge units in our church and we need to hear from the rest of you. Remember, this is our church home and family and we must take care of it, so that from this church we can follow God’s calling and do what He wants us to do. Our church fiscal year begins on July 1st, so we will be preparing our budget in the very near future. The budget will be based, in large part, on the pledges we receive. We can’t do this without your pledge information. We need to have everyone’s pledge response in by June 15th (you can mail it to the church or drop it in the offering plate). June 15th is our deadline. If you have misplaced your pledge form, extras are available from the Church office and on the main bulletin board in the Narthex. Thanks again for everyone’s support. We will wrap this up and move forward into the next fiscal year, with wonderful ministries flowing from this congregation.

You can check the church calendar online! Go to http://fairoaksumc.org/#/find-out-more/calendar and click where indicated. The bulletin boards in the Narthex and the Sanctuary Hallway have been refreshed and re-organized! This will provide another way of staying up-to-date with the many events in our church life and our church members’ lives. Please take a few moments to familiarize yourself with which bulletin board serves what purpose. Everyone is welcome to post their information on the appropriate board. Please use common sense and common courtesy when making room for your flyer or poster. As always, the Church Office welcomes your feedback and suggestions.

Summer Music Ministry By Michael Schwagerus

On Pentecost Sunday we were blessed to be visited by Rev. Dan Smith, our spiritual coach on our Pathway to Renewal. Rev. Dan shared the results of our church survey creating a shared vision for where we are - what our current situation is. He took our hands and led us on the beginning of our journey as we seek to understand how God is calling us and what is our next step towards vitality. We set an objective to identify two strategic renewal goals in which the first goal will allow us to open a door more widely and the second goal will allow us to nurture ourselves more deeply. We gathered together in small groups and discussed how to finish the following sentence:

Fair Oaks UMC will be known in the community as the church that __________.

Our Pathway to Renewal group will be meeting in June to discuss all the ideas that were shared on Pentecost Sunday and further explore how God is calling us into Koinonia, communion by intimate participation, community. Following our next group meeting, we will plan an open meeting for all to participate in defining our next steps towards vitality.

You show me the path of life. In your presence there is fullness of joy;

in your right hand are pleasures for evermore. Psalms 16:11

STUDENTS WORSHIPING

AN AWESOME GOD We Did It!

We overcame! We don’t think it’s right that thousands of kids are dying from hunger every day. So we did something about it. Our youth group helped change the lives of hungry children and families through World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine. We went without food for 30 hours and raised $1080, enough to help feed and care for 3 kids for 12 months! As part of our famine, we engaged in activities learning what it is like to be a

refugee in countries like Ethiopia, Mali and Kenya. After learning about the daily challenges children and families face every day, our group made the decision to send our funds to Kenya. Dadaab is a refugee camp near the Kenyan border with Somalia. In 2011, the Horn of Africa experienced its worst drought in more than 60 years, driving families from their homes in search of food. Many made the grueling, dangerous trek to Dadaab. Originally built for 90,000 people, Dadaab grew to more than 450,000 by 2012, making it the third largest “city” in Kenya. Most refugees at Dadaab are from war-torn Somalia. With a lack of attention to this crisis from governments worldwide, the food and supplies provided by humanitarian groups aren’t enough to go around. Here, hope can be all but forgotten.

New Beginnings Starting July 11th

FUN · WORSHIP · MUSIC · MISSION · CONCERTS · OUTREACH · TRIPS It has been an exciting and fruitful year. I have been blessed to be ministering to our youth in junior and senior high beginning last August. Since then, we have studied Scriptures, shared in fellowship and prayer, engaged in outreach and mission, hit the road to see Toby Mac, Jamie Grace and others in concert, led a youth service and more. But the best part is we have journeyed together to grow in our love and devotion for our Creator God, for Jesus Christ our Savior and Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit who is our Counselor and Sustainer. This month we are taking Sabbath, a time of rest and worship. During June, we will not be gathering for our weekly fellowship on Thursdays. We will begin anew starting on Thursday July 11th. It is with great pleasure and excitement that I am able to announce that beginning in July our new SWAG Youth Leader will be Joy Gilberg. Please join me in enthusiastically welcoming Joy as she moves from becoming a volunteer youth leader to being our new Director of Youth Ministry. As for myself, I will continue on as a part time volunteer youth leader. By Bob Gilberg

RED, WHITE and BLUE needs YOU! Exploratory Planning Meeting on June 16

After worship service on Sunday, June 16, anyone interested in helping in even the smallest way with this summer’s Red White & Blue BBQ is invited to attend a 20-minute meeting for brainstorming, job volunteering, planning, etc. The Red, White and Blue Barbecue needs a Chairperson. A person to pull all the various parts of the barbecue and pie auction together. A person to keep everything organized and moving forward. What looks like a big task is just staying organized. Data has been collected for most of the events going back a number of years and can be forwarded to you as soon as you accept. You don't have to reinvent the process, just keep the ball rolling and the burgers flipping!

We're looking for some teams of two or three people to handle Coffee Hour on a routine basis. Each "team" would be responsible for the coffee fellowship of a particular Sunday. Currently, the Tongan Congregation hosts Coffee Fellowship on the first Sunday and different individuals sign up for the other Sundays. We would like to get teams lined up with commitments to handle a Sunday (2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th Sunday) for the remainder of the year. If you would be interested in helping with Coffee Fellowship, please send an e-mail to me, [email protected], and let me know which Sunday team you could join.

The main parking lot has been slurried and marked for striping. The handicap lot is ready for striping and will need marker posts on the north side and west side to prevent mishap. The North Lot (Little Methodist School lot) will be slurried this week and marked in the near future. The building directional signs are here and will be installed soon. The sign box for campus layout is also here and will be outfitted with diagrams and building names. The sign box will be located by the main parking lot and will be backlit. ADA compliance - We continue to look at ways to economically retrofit our campus to be compliant with California State ADA laws. Our campus presents unique problems because of the topography and the relationship to building access points. Ramps, doorways, compliant bathrooms and entry points all have to be considered and addressed. Fair Oaks Blvd. Landscaping is done! The roses are planted and irrigation system is currently working. The Fair Oaks Blvd. church sign will have new warning bumpers installed to protect the sign as well as serve as a warning to drivers within our parking lot. If you see a problem on our campus, please take the time to let any trustee member know or slip a note to the church office. We all need to strive to make this campus a well maintained and beautiful place to worship.

Any volunteers/suggestions will be appreciated. For those not in the know, we meet almost every Wednesday morning and work 9AM to noon, approximately. It helps if we have about four regulars so we can accomplish something when somebody needs the day off. I hate to work alone! The skills required are low tech. If something is complicated/requires a skilled tradesman, we bump it over to Trustees. Some handyman level helps, whether carpentry, electrical, mechanical, gardening, or just plain fixer-upper. The tasks vary from moving dirt to paint touchup, sprinkler repair, checking light bulbs, fixing door latches, etc. Telling war stories is optional.

It saves the church a lot of money over time as the labor is voluntary. We do give raises from time to time! It is another way you can contribute to the church’s benefit in addition to out of pocket. Any inquiries, please contact me, Jim Allen, 916-966-2094, or the church office, 916-961-6631, and leave a message if you get no answer, PLEASE.

I think that I shall never see A poem lovely as a tree. A tree whose hungry mouth is prest Against the earth's sweet flowing breast; A tree that looks at God all day, And lifts her leafy arms to pray; A tree that may in Summer wear A nest of robins in her hair; Upon whose bosom snow has lain; Who intimately lives with rain. Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.

Book Club

Join us on Monday, June 24 at noon in the Church Library as we discuss The Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell. From Amazon.com: “In this stunning new book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band. Brilliant and entertaining, Outliers is a landmark work that will simultaneously delight and illuminate.”

Bring your lunch and join in our lively discussion!

FOUMC their church home and wish to share their business talents with their church family.
