PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Well, I guess the biggest news for this month is the proposed Retirement Lifestyle Village and Aged Care Facility at Turtle Cove. A Development Approval already exists (and has since 1989!!) for a tourist resort and golf course on this site, but the developer has now put in to Council for a Material Change of Use on that DA which will be for the retirement village etc. The developer is trying to gauge community reaction to this proposal. Therefore, there will be an open forum on Tuesday, 4 June commencing 6.00pm at the community hall. We would like to see as many residents, not just RHPA members, attend as possible, so recipients of this Review should pass the word around. The developer will be present to answer questions and explain in detail what is proposed. Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Council will approve the MCU, but as with anything of this nature, community consultation must take place. Hope to see you at the meeting armed with your questions. Don’t forget Garden Club is held every Tuesday morning at 9.00am, so come along and have some fun – morning tea provided. Anyone who can donate some plants would be very welcome, particularly vegetable, herbs, citrus. The next Busy Bee for the Reserve will be held on Sat 8 June at 9am. Alan, Nev and the crew are doing a fantastic job, so please come along and lend a hand – it’s not hard work and morning tea is provided. The Kids’ Committee has met with Cr Darren Everard regarding the proposed skatepark. We are doing all we can to get a decent facility for the kids who really don’t have much to entertain them here, particularly given there is no public transport available, so hang in there kids. Planning for RiverFest 2013 is going really well. Goddards buses will be providing a bus on the Saturday morning 7

th September to take people free of

charge from the hall to the ramp and return to watch the marine events – should be quite a spectacle – many thanks to Goddards. Looks like Channel 7 will also be filming down there and of course Mix103.5 FM will be broadcasting the breakfast show live from River Heads on the Friday 6

th

leading up to the event. Don’t forget entry forms for the marine events are now available from River Heads Property Sales and from www.riverheads.org.au or by emailing [email protected].

We want as many RH and Booral boaties as possible to join in the Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet as well as participate in the races.

Events categories are as follows: 1. BLESSING OF THE FLEET AND SAIL PAST (no entry fee) 2. BEST DRESSED BOAT (no entry fee) 3. YACHT RACE UPSTREAM MARY RIVER FROM RIVER HEADS 6km (Under 10m & Over 10m Mono-hull and Under 10m & Over 10m Multi-hull) ($5.00 entry fee) 4. MOTOR BOAT TIME TRIAL GREAT

SANDY ($5.00 entry fee)

Great prizes to be won and lots of fun to be had!!

Don’t forget to book your market stall for RiverFest – phone Judy on 4125 7726 – nil site fee. Markets Saturday and Sunday from 8.00am.

Now, no real news on the pontoon. We sent follow-ups to Department of Transport contact in Bundaberg and to the Asst Transport Minister, Steve Minnikin but so far no response. Rumour has it though that a survey vessel was seen in the vicinity of the ramp recently, so let’s hope that is a good sign. And, River Heads Road!! This is taking far too long given the amount of traffic being diverted through Cove Blvd. It is most frustrating for everyone, particularly those residents on Cove Blvd. We will follow up to try and get a definite timeframe on completion. In the meantime, thank you for your patience! That’s all for now folks. Take care, stay well and enjoy life Billie Rustin

Hi Everyone

Please note that a Special General Meeting will be held at the Community Hall 6.00pm on Tuesday 4 June, 2013.

The main nature of business will be community consultation and

discussion on proposed Retirement Lifestyle Village and Aged Care Facility to be located at Turtle Cove on the parcel of land at the end of Havenna St. The developer will be present to give an overview of

what is proposed (subject to Council) and answer any questions community members may have.

As this is an important development for River Heads and Booral we need

as many people as possible to attend. All residents of River Heads & Booral welcome to attend.

The second nature of business will be a proposal to have general

meetings every 3 months instead of every 2 months. Hope to see you there.

Regards, Billie

River Heads artist Janine Hunt has taken out first prize in the 5th Annual Fraser Coast Competitive Art Exhibition. The award winning painting, titled “Aerial Perspective” was described by the competition judge, Trevor Spohr, as a stand out winner, a dramatic interpretation of the subject, cleverly considered design and masterfully executed. The painting will now become part of the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s permanent art collection.

Following on from the success of the inaugural event last year, RiverFest 2013 will be held Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th September.

This year we are growing the marine component of the event. There will be sailing races in 2 divisions for both mono and multi-hull craft and also a power boat time trial in 2 divisions for open boats and cabin

cruisers. Commodore Bill Glenwright from the Wide Bay Motor Boat Club is coordinating these races for us.

The marine component will be held on Saturday 7th September commencing with a Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet by Major Lyn Cook of the Salvation Army. The Hervey Bay RSL Pipe Band will be in attendance at the River Heads ramp to pipe the fleet past. Great prizes are on offer kindly donated by Kingfisher Resorts for winners of each event and the winner of the Best Dressed Boat category. Entry forms are available from www.riverheads.org.au or from River Heads Property Sales 4125 7777 or by emailing [email protected]. Entry fee for the races is only $5.00 per boat and free for the best dressed boat category in the Sail Past and Blessing of the Fleet. We want as many River Heads and Booral boaties to enter as possible to make this a gala event and showcase our beautiful area. Land-based activities will be held all weekend at the Community Hall - markets, live music, art exhibitions by local artists, local artisans' demonstrations, Zumba and Taekwondo demonstrations, car rallies, cycling events, lots of kids' activities such as jumping castle, kids' karaoke, face painting, fairy floss, tree stump painting with Indigenous art and much more. Rivers Cafe and Bar will be open both days in the

Community Hall. The River Heads Fishing Club will hold its fishing comp over the weekend with the weigh-in at 2.30pm Sunday at the hall and the

Buccaneers Dinner Dance will be held Saturday evening at the Hall tickets from River Heads Property Sales $15 per person for a 2 course meal - prizes for best dressed pirate and wench.

COOKS CORNER

Page 6

Happy winter to all those happy cooks out there! Isn’t this just the best time of year to try out new recipes? ---- And to re-hash some old ones as well. I would love to see some of yours! This recipe is one I made up as I went along, using what I could find in the ‘frig’ and pantry. It worked out well so I thought I would pass it on and you could try it, or make up your own version as you go.

PORK AND VEAL ROLL Ingredients 500 gm pork and veal mince 1 small onion, finely diced 1 egg ½ tspn mixed herbs or whatever seasoning you wish Salt and pepper About ¼ cup dried breadcrumbs A couple of hands full of baby spinach leaves 2-3 diced mushrooms (I used the big flat brown ones for more flavour) 1 tin diced tomato 1 Tbspn tomato paste About ¼ cup water Method

1. Place first six ingredients in a large bowl and mix together well. Using your hands is easier and quicker, otherwise use a fork.

2. Turn the mixture onto a large piece of baking paper and flatten out to a 20cm by 30cm rectan-gle.

3. Place the spinach and mushrooms on top leav-ing a good 2-3cm space all around the edge.

4. Using the baking paper to help you, roll up start-ing from the long side and carefully transfer to a shallow baking dish. (eg a lasagne dish)

5. Mix together the tinned tomatoes, tomato paste and water and pour over the meat roll in the baking dish.

6. Cook in a moderate oven for about 40 mins. Cut into slices to serve with extra green vegetables and mashed potato or couscous or rice.

There are lots of flavours you could use in this recipe instead of the ones I used. Why not try some Asian (ginger, coriander, garlic, and lemon grass) or Moroccan (cardamom, cinnamon, lemon, etc) or add some garlic, oregano, basil, parmesan cheese on top for a more Ital-ian style dish. There is so much you can do if you use your imagination. Have fun!

POTATO, CARAMELISED ONION AND FETA GRATIN

Ingredients 2 tbspns olive oil 3 lge onions peeled and thinly sliced 1tspn fresh thyme ---- or more if you want Salt and pepper 3 – 4 large potatoes, peeled and cut into very thin slices (I don’t peel them, just partly cook in the microwave and then slice about 7-10mm thick. It’s quicker and I can leave out the milk.) ½ cup crumbled fetta cheese --- or more 1tbspn cold butter cut into pieces ½ cup milk

Method 1. Use a heavy based pan, heat oil and fry onions with thyme, salt and pepper. 2. Reduce the heat and cook for 15-20 mins until brown and sweet, stirring often. I add 1tbspn brown sugar to help. 3. Lightly oil a shallow oven proof dish. Arrange half the potato slices in the bottom, season with s&p; cover the potatoes with the onions and the fetta. Place the remaining potatoes on top; dot with butter and pour over the milk (if you are using it and the potatoes are raw) 4. Bake in a moderate oven for 35-40 mins until top is golden brown and potatoes are tender. 5. Sprinkle with more thyme or chopped parsley to serve. This is a great side dish, or have it as a simple vegetarian meal. A friend recently gave me a lot of passionfruit, so I found this recipe in a file I have had for about 20 years and tried it. It is a delicious variation on the old fashioned boiled fruit cake.

BOILED PASSION FRUIT AND ORANGE FRUIT CAKE

Ingredients ½ cup strained passionfruit juice (you will need about 7 large ones) 500gm mixed fruit ¼ cup orange juice 1 cup sugar 125gm butter 3 eggs, lightly beaten ¾ cup plain flour ¾ cup SR flour 1 tspn mixed spice Method

1. Combine first 5 ingredients in a saucepan and stir constantly over low heat until sugar has-dissolved.

2. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 3 minutes.

3. Remove from heat, transfer to a large bowl and cool until room temperature.

4. Grease a deep, 20cm round, cake tin and line with baking paper.

5. Stir the eggs and sifted dry ingredients into the cool fruit mixture and pour into the prepared tin.

6. Bake in a moderately slow oven (160C) for about 1 ½ hours.

7. Cool cake in the tin.

It’s a New Day! By Sue Watson

In-Laws or Out-Laws!

After arguing for hours, a couple drove along in silence. Suddenly they passed a paddock with mules and donkeys grazing. Sarcastically, the husband asked, ‘Relatives of yours?’ The wife replied, ‘Yes, in-laws.’ Marriage was God’s idea, and it was a good one. Picking up the theme Jesus said ‘A man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife.’ Here are some suggestions for being a good in-law: 1. Love honour and respect the couple. 2. Resist the urge to show them ‘a better way’ of doing things. 3. Do not find fault or criticise them. 4. Never outwear your welcome or visit too often. 5. Don’t expect them to visit you too often. 6. Refrain from giving unsolicited advice. 7. Don’t talk about ‘wanting grandchildren’ unless they are on the way. 8. Respect their decorating tastes even when it differs from yours. 9. Pray for them daily and without fail. If you are an in-law who doesn’t want to be viewed as an out-law, live by these rules!

MAY REPORT

Club members actually managed to get around to fighting some decent fish instead of the weather conditions this month. The outstanding setting presented some very rewarding and enjoyable fishing. And if the fish werent biting, it was great to just be out there. That’s what it is all about people! Plenty of fish were measured in this month, and a couple of club records were broken. Mark Gross landed a sort after Mangrove Jack at 50cm, beating Steve Dentons March 2010 record of 49cm. Steve hit back though, knocking Warwick Knapton off the Blackall record of 73cm (June 2011) with a larger specimen.

Great job guys. Reville Schoermer also caught a cracker on a live herring in the Susan. Just a few cms. of a metre, the awesome King Salmon he landed definitely put a smile on his face. Steve, Rob Mills and Warwick Knapton bought in some impressive mixed bags, earning them some valueable last minute competition points. Rob also caught a nice whiting on a hard body lure, nice to see the water is clear enough again. Also, remember members… the next Fish Meet measure in is the last towards your points before our annual Trophy Presentation Night so get out there and fish hard! We are holding the presentation evening on Saturday 15th June at the Hall, starting from 6pm. We our welcoming not only club members but also their family, friends and non-members with any interest in the club to attend. There will be a lucky door prize, prizes for the kids and meat tray raffles so it should be a night worth coming along to. Meals will be available and the bar is open. Rhonda Verrier is providing the entertainment as well, so it will be a fun night!

It’s that time of year again members… Interclub Competition! Didn’t that come around quick? Seems like only yesterday we were basking in the glory of winning the shield for the first time. You can start fishing Friday 7th June @ 4pm. Weigh in is at Toogoom Community Hall between 11am-12 noon on Monday 10th. Good luck all, we would like to keep that shield firmly mounted on the wall in OUR Community Hall… GO RIVER HEADS! On that note, please remember that we have had to bring our JUNE FISH MEET FORWARD because of Interclub. Start fishing Friday 31st, and we will see you at the hall for the final measure in of the competiton year on Sunday 2nd June. Other exciting news. By the time this is published, our long awaited club shed should be starting to take shape. This shed is going to make all the logistical workings of the club so much easier to manage. And remember, the last weekend in October will be the running of the ‘Compeleat Angler Barra & Salmon Clas-sic’. River Heads will be hosting its 2nd Public Competi-tion, and we are expecting big things! The RHFC competition commences on the 1st FRIDAY

(12:01am) of the month with recording at 3pm at the Fish Meet.

Esky or photo media must be presented before 3pm

The Fish Meet is held at the River Heads Community Hall on the 1st SUNDAY FOLLOWING THE 1ST

FRIDAY of the month starting at 2pm. Bar is open & a BBQ Sausage sizzle is Free!

We encourage responsible fishing practices by all members. Photographs of measured (preferably on a brag mat) and released fish are included in point scoring. Members are revealed the ‘Secret Object’ for the month (which must be included in the photo) with their Fish Meet reminders. We hope this allows people a chance to get out there, wet a line, and just enjoy this amazing place we live in. It’s not just about the competition. So get fishing! Warwick Knapton won the Lucky Door prize of a $40 voucher from Angler’s Den. Reville Schroehmer won the ‘Reidy’s Lure Most Out-standing Catch of the Month Award’ for his King Salmon. Our ‘Tropic Angler Junior Encouragement Award’ wasn’t awarded this month. John Smee won the Meat Tray raffle from Point Vernon Butchery. TARGET SPECIES that will attract double points at

QUOTES & JOKES

A woman received a call that her daughter was sick.

She stopped by the pharmacy to get medication, got back to her car and found that she had locked

her keys inside.

The woman found an old rusty coat hanger left on the ground.

She looked at it and said "I don't know how to use this."

She bowed her head and asked God to send her

HELP.

Within 5 minutes a beat up old motorcycle pulled up.

A bearded man who was wearing an old biker

skull rag. The man got off of his cycle and asked if he could

help.

She said: "Yes, my daughter is sick. I’ve locked my keys in my car.

I must get home. Please, can you use this hanger to unlock my car?"

He said, "Sure."

He walked over to the car, and in less than a

minute the car door was opened.

She hugged the man and through tears said, "Thank You SO Much! You are a very nice man."

The man replied,

"Lady, I am NOT a nice man. I just got out of PRISON yesterday,

I was in prison for car theft."

The woman hugged the man again sobbing, "Oh, thank you God!

You even sent me a Professional!"

My neighbor was working in his yard when he was startled by a late model car that came

crashing through his hedge and ended up in his front lawn.

He rushed to help an elderly lady driver out of the

car and sat her down on a lawn chair.

He said with excitement, "you appear quite elderly to be driving."

"Well, yes, I am," she replied proudly. "I'll be 97

next month, and I am now old enough that I don't even need a driver's license anymore.

"The last time I went to my doctor, he examined me

and asked if I had a driver's license.

I told him yes and handed it to him.

He took scissors out of the drawer, cut the license into pieces, and threw them in the waste basket,

saying, 'You won't need this anymore,

' so I thanked him and left!"

The man who smiles when things go wrong, has thought Of someone to blame” Robert Bloch

HEAPS DONE, AND IT LOOKS GOOD

Garden Beds While Rick’s Mowing is caring for these beds it has given us a chance to review how they are at present and what will work better in the future. At present, to keep control of unwanted grasses and weeds, spraying, whipper snipping and mowing is required. Adoption of a plan to open up the beds for mowing only by ride on has been validated as a good compromise.

We have had an offer to care and maintain one garden bed, five beds remain available. The care and maintenance of the Entry garden beds is at a very high level and the work is appreciated. Replacement of costly hybrids with propagated local natives is now being arranged progressively. We are still looking for a volunteer couple, or a volunteer person, prepared to take over the care and maintenance of the Buffer Zone, please contact Neville or Alan.

Sporting Oval The Oval is looking great. The concrete cricket pitch has been laid, thanks to Byrne Bros for the concrete, Steve Whitmore for laying, Ian for facilitating and the crew for their work. A pitch cover for when other sports are played has been resolved. A funding grant has been requested from Community Gambling. Final levelling and top dressing of the Sports Oval is yet to be done. More volunteers are needed to do future slashing and mowing, this is a chance to drive a tractor and get heaps of fresh air, contact Neville: 4125 7670.

Buildings The Toilet Block has been commissioned and is officially in use. Regular cleaning will be carried out by Council at the same time as the Hall facilities are cleaned. Items on our wish list for the future are an Equipment Shed, Playground and a BBQ. Grants through Everyone’s ` Environment program have been advertised as available, applications for our projects are being considered.

Busy Bee’s May Busy Bee work focussed on removing weeds growing between the feature rocks south of the Reserve entry. The spaces were then planted with Lomandra native grasses. These grasses already feature in the drive in entry and do very well. Thanks to the volunteers. June Busy Bee could see the start of the Avenue of Trees, possibly also planting of Shade Trees on the top of the oval banking. Also a general clean up of past projects and weeding will be carried out. July Busy Bee will see the start of redevelopment of the six garden beds to reduce labour input and enhance control of grasses and weeds.

Next Busy Bee is 9am Saturday 8th June. Do join us! Alan Baxter Neville Watson 4125 7927 4125 7670

MAYOR’S REPORT

STATE MEMBER’S REPORT

The Hervey Bay community invited to have their say online The Hervey Bay community can now have its say on shaping the long-term future of the state through The Queensland Plan website. Six questions, collaboratively developed at the summit in Mackay on Friday 10th May, are now online for all Queenslanders to answer. The questions reflected a consensus view of the delegates who attended the Mackay summit. The questions were developed from a collaborative process involving more than 400 community, industry and government representatives at the summit. The summit was only the first step in the journey. It is now up to the whole community to have its say on the state’s future. The answers to the questions will tell us where the community wants the state to be in 30 years’ time, detailing our priorities for the future. The Queensland Plan website is only one way to give your feedback. You can also contact my office, to find out more. (41241386) The six questions the community is asked to answer are:

· In the context of living in the community, how do we move our focus from me to we? · How do we create and foster an education culture that teaches skills and values to meet global challenges

and optimise regional strengths? · How do we empower and educate individuals, communities and institutions to embrace responsibility for an

active and healthy lifestyle? · How do we structure our economy to ensure our children inherit a resilient future? · How do we strengthen our economic future and achieve sustainable landscapes? · How do we attract and retain the brightest minds and ideas where they are most needed and capitalise on

global opportunities? To provide your answers or to find out more about how you can get involved in The Queensland Plan, visit www.qld.gov.au/queenslandplan.

This year we’ve hosted three of the biggest events ever to grace the Fraser Coast, starting with the hugely successful AJ2013 Scouts Jamboree, Ulysses AGM and CMCA Rally. These events have injected millions into the local economy and helped put the region on the map as one of Queensland’s premier event destinations. Starting this month we launch our official events season, starting with the highly anticipated Relish Food and Wine Fest and World’s Great pub Fest on the 8 -9 June in Maryborough. Relish Food Fest will showcase the endeavours of the region’s fresh seasonal produce, local seafood, innovative chefs and regional wineries; it will feature wine and cheese tastings, beer and food matching sessions, cooking and coffee demonstrations and much more. On Sunday (9 June) more than 10,000 people are expected to join the fun of Pub Fest and enjoy a drink and a bite to eat around the Maryborough CBD. And these are just the beginning; the Hervey Bay Whale Festival will run for the entire month of August; the Mary Poppins Festival promises seven days of family friendly fun and the RACQ Technology Challenge will bring more than 2000 students and teachers from across Queensland to the Fraser Coast. These signature events help foster a strong sense of community and highlight some of the Fraser Coast’s unique natural attractions and rich history. Events season is well and truly upon us and I hope all Fraser Coast residents make the most of our fantastic facilities and enjoy all there is to offer. Gerard O’Connell Fraser Coast Mayor

Here is How Thousands of Parents Across Australia have Achieved This!

It is a well-known fact that children studying the Martial arts develop a higher mental focus and a longer attention span. For over 40 years, Parents have been enrolling their children into Rhee Tae Kwon-Do to enhance their children’s grades at school and their behaviors at home. If you develop concentration, education is easy. That is what we believe at Rhee Tae Kwon-Do. Children learn faster while they are having fun, and that is why the classes are designed in a manner which is exciting and uplifting. Not only do the students cultivate higher concentration levels, they are also exposed to the principles such as doing your best, respect, self-discipline and being a good role model to others. The popular No Tournament Policy takes the emphasis off students having to come first to be recognized. Instead student’s progress at their own rate through an exciting Color Belt system designed to provide students with the on-going motivation to exercise and to progress towards achieving a very significant and worthwhile goal– BLACK BELT. The self defence techniques they learn improves their co-ordination, flexibility and muscle devel-opment which in turn builds their self-esteem and confidence like no other activity. On top of all this, students learn peaceful and effective Anti-Bully Strategies while at the same time cultivating Self Control and Black Belt Focus. Classes are Held at the River Heads Community Hall every Tuesday and Thursday from 4.45pm – 5.45pm. If you would like to receive some Obligation Free, Trial Lessons, call the friendly staff at Rhee Tae Kwon-Do on 41 254 669 or 0417 637 306.
