Monday, June 10th
On May 14, business persons from the Chamber’s Business Boot Camp
program presented their unique business growth implementation
plans to their classmates, mentors and distinguished Castle Rock com-
munity and business leaders. Graduates of the program received valu-
able feedback and guidance to prepare them to lead their businesses
to the next successful level. On May 20, students graduated from the
Chamber’s Young Entrepreneurs Academy with fully functional busi-
nesses. These businesses will become members of the Castle Rock
Chamber of Commerce and are ready to serve the Castle Rock com-
munity! Read more on page 9.

Business Boot Camp Class of 2012-2013

I’m proud and humbled to serve as Chairman of the Cas-tle Rock Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for the coming year. First, speaking for the Chamber and the Castle Rock community, I’d like to thank Aaron Bar-rick of Folkestad, Fazekas, Barrick & Patoile PC for his exceptional leadership as the Chairman this past year. I’m grateful that Aaron will be a key part of the Execu-tive Team this year.
It goes without saying (but I will anyways!) that I’m looking forward to working with Chamber President /CEO Pam Ridler, the talented and hard working staff,
the Ambassadors, the Board Members, and the countless volunteers serving on committees and working at events.
When you stop and think about it, so many of the annual events that add to Castle Rock’s unique charm and small town feel are Chamber programs, led and staffed by Chamber employees and volunteers—the Artfest, Wine Fest, Starlighting, Douglas County Fair Parade and the Healthy Living Expo. The Chamber clearly has more than a business focus—it has a community focus.
I’m also excited to be in a position to work closely with the Town’s leaders and groups that help make Castle Rock such a wonderful place to live and do business—the Town Council and staff, the Chamber, the Economic Develop-ment Council, the Downtown Alliance, and the Economic Partnership, to name a few. Our community is very fortunate to have forward thinkers in all of these organizations who embrace collaboration.
One of my primary goals for the coming year is to complete the process started at our Board Retreat in January where we sought to prioritize all the Chamber’s programs, activities, and functions.
During this evaluation process, though, you can be sure that the Castle Rock Chamber will continue to focus its time and resources on its core mission:
• Support and promote member businesses;
• Be a voice to government; and
• Foster a livable community with positive growth
If you are not a member of the Chamber and you share these values, please join our cause. There are membership levels and rates that work for any sized business, from home-based “solopreneurs” to well-staffed corporations.
And if you are already a member, thank you for your support. Please make the most of your membership by joining the groups and committees that make sense for you and attending the networking and training sessions. There is no better way to develop business contacts and forge solid business relation-ships than serving in these settings.
Once again, thank you for the opportunity to help lead the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce. As with the previous men and women that held this position, my ultimate goal is to do as well as they did to move the organiza-tion forward so that it is stronger and more effective and provides more mem-ber value than a year ago. With your help and support, we will achieve this once again in 2013.

Business Boot Camp Recruitment Party
When: Wednesday, June 26
Time: 5:30pm to 7pm
Location: Castle Rock Chamber
(420 Jerry Street)
If you own a viable Castle Rock-based company and want to take it to the next level, the Castle
Rock Chamber of Commerce’s Business Boot Camp will help get you there. This high impact program is built around seven monthly sessions (three hours each) beginning in October and is augmented by peer and mentor support. The cur-riculum is rigorous but we have seen in the past years, that those who have stuck with the program have come away with a clear plan and the skills needed to grow their business. Additionally, the graduates of this program are publi-cally recognized as Castle Rock’s emerging business leaders.
The Business Boot Camp is exclusively for owners of Castle Rock-based compa-nies that have been in business three years or more and have at least three employees (including independent contractors). Each class is limited to fifteen people in order to provide personalized instructor and mentor attention. We are targeting companies that have a clear commitment to growth.
Join us to learn more about our Business Boot Camp program as we are recruit-ing for our 2013-2014 program. Come hear from past participants, mentors, and instructors on the many benefits to this program. No obligation, just
information. Join us. RSVP to [email protected] or call the Chamber at 303-688-4597.

“Business boot camp
helped me see my
business from a dif-
ferent perspective.
Working with my
employees to hear
their thoughts made
me realize that as an
owner it is more im-
portant to manage the business and not
micromanage my employees.
I am excited to apply the advanced mar-
keting lessons learned during the IT ses-
sion and have incorporated a very forward
technology driven business concept, in-
cluding a Skype station, into our retail lo-
cation.”

seen the ROI and an increase
in my bottom line as a direct

Ambassador of the Month-Sue Turner
Sue Turner is a Colorado native, and
has lived in Castle Rock for seventeen
years with her husband Brett and son,
Steve, all of whom work in their own
business, Proforma Image Branding.
She moved to Castle Rock when Little-
ton started getting “too big.” She and
her family love the small town feel,
and the sense of community that is typical of small towns.
Even though Castle Rock has grown a lot in the time she’s been here, Sue feels it
has maintained the small town feel, and frequently talks about how “they roll up
the sidewalks at night.”
Sue is in her third year as an Ambassador. She has been a strong advocate for the
Chamber since she joined more than five years ago. She enjoys being an Ambassa-
dor for the camaraderie that it brings, as well as the opportunity to mentor new
and potential members. Being an Ambassador provides the opportunity to take an
active role in the community and make a difference. The role of Chamber Ambas-
sador also defines you as a person who is interested in building business relation-
ships, encouraging new business leaders to become more involved and generally
making this community great place to work and live. It is the same reason Sue en-
joys being a member of the chamber - for the relationships she has developed, and
many strong friendships as well. Having clients become friends is what being in
business is all about!
Congratulations and Thank You Sue, for all your hard work supporting and promot-
ing the Chamber!

Gallaware launches AMB
(the Chamber Ambassadors point tracking system). Gallaware, Inc. recently offered its services to assist the Chamber and its Ambassadors with a better way to manage their
monthly points system. Primarily implemented as a way for the Chamber to track and acknowledge the contributions
and volunteer work of the Ambassadors, the old spreadsheet and paper-based point system was becoming time consum-
ing and cumbersome to keep up, and even more difficult to generate consolidated informative reports from. As part of
the new 2013 Executive Committee, Ambassador Secretary, Melanie Calhoun, with Premier Designs Jewelry, approached
Gallaware “to see if there was an easier and more efficient way to do this”. Ms. Calhoun was familiar with Gallaware’s
“productivity software development” and their ability to create easy-to-use-and-maintain custom solutions for a wide
range of data management problems. Gallaware quickly determined the best solution for this problem was a web-based,
database application or webapp. Read more at ……
Each month, as part of the secretary’s responsibilities, Ms. Calhoun logs into the Ambassadors point tracking system
(AMB) website and enters information on all of the events that the Ambassadors might participate in during that month.
(For those not aware of the Chamber’s Ambassador program, there are a LOT of things that the Ambassadors do. A short
list includes: making Anniversary Calls, attending, working at and sometimes speaking at Ribbon Cuttings, Business After
Hours, Business Over Breakfast, Business of the Month, serving as “Buddy” for a potential or new Chamber member at
one of those functions, Mentoring new Chamber members, and much more.) Assigning Ambassadors to events through
AMB is more efficient than the previous routine of copying and pasting data into spreadsheets.
Ambassadors can then log into AMB at their convenience and essentially “check” each event they participated in. They
no longer have to remember how many points are earned for each (type of) activity, nor calculate the total points earned
that month; the system does this for them. This feature ensures more accurate point calculations.
The webapp provides a variety of reports that can be generated with a few clicks of the mouse, such as individual
monthly point sheets for each Ambassador, a consolidated summary of all Ambassadors points for a given month (to in-
stantly determine Ambassador of the Month), historical information to make sure no Anniversary Calls or Mentorings fall
through the cracks, etc. These reports provide information in a manner that was very difficult with the previous spread-
sheet and paper system.
AMB even has the ability to allow the Ambassadors to enter comments based on their activities and membership interac-
tions and automatically forward these comments via email to the Chamber for any necessary action. Although already
exceeding the capabilities of their previous method of point tracking, the list of potential capabilities for this new applica-
tion continues to grow.
Gallaware has been an active Chamber member since
1999 and has really enjoyed assisting with this project.
As a co-member of the Chamber recently summarized,
Gallaware’s specialty is “creating software systems to lessen the stress and smooth the flow of information”. If you can't
find a program "off the shelf" to automate, or better automate, your office/data processes, or Word and Excel can no
longer adequately handle it, Gallaware can develop a product customized specifically for your needs. Contact Gallaware
at 303-814-3867.

May’s Topic: Fire and Emergency Services Speakers: Chief Dan Qualman, South Metro Fire Rescue Authority Chief Art Morales, Castle Rock Fire & Rescue Dept.
Class Planners: Pete Ritchie, Wind Crest Retirement Village and Matt Goudy, Class of 2012
The purpose of Fire and Emergence Services Day is to introduce
LDC class members to a component that is vital to all communi-
ties. It’s a day for the class to learn what it takes to protect our
community, as well as a chance for some hands-on fun! The
sessions normally take place in several different venues and
participants are introduced to various pieces of equipment and
they even get to try out some of the equipment. This year was
no different, although class planners had to deal with a May 1
snowstorm that kept all of the activities indoors at South Metro
Fire Station #34 in Lone Tree and Station 151 in Castle Rock.
Fire services are very diverse in Douglas County and while the
departments are not all run on the same model, there is a tre-
mendous amount of collaboration. The departments operate in
areas that are rural, such as Larkspur, to more dense popula-
tions, such as Castle Rock, to a mixture of rural, urban and
higher density where the South Metro Fire Rescue Agency oper-
ates. Along with fire and emergency services, we also have an
Office of Emergency Management and Terrorism Liaison Officers
here in Douglas County.
The agencies work independently, but also collaborate on things
such as fighting structural fires; planning for, mitigating and
fighting wildfires; answering emergency medical calls and gath-
ering information on terrorism. Regional partnerships, and
sharing manpower and equipment between agencies, are ways
the county leverages and stretches existing resources.
Some of the challenges include making sure that homeowners
are aware of the need to mitigate their properties for wildfires,
and balancing between being prepared for the big calls as well
as the day to day calls. Emergency runs for medical related
issues make up a large percentage of the calls.
Class members got an in-depth look at fire engines, brush
trucks and EMS equipment. They learned how to rappel, try
on bunker gear and simulated putting out a kitchen fire with a
home fire extinguisher (it’s not so easy!). Some members even
volunteered to experience backboarding, a long spine board
device used to immobilize an individual who may have suffered
a spinal injury. Chief Art Morales presented one the day’s
highlights—an inspiring leadership skill session on knowing
your mission, vision and values.
“This program gave me a whole new appreciation for the Cas-
tle Rock Fire Department and the first class care and customer
service provided.” Marcus Cordova, LDC Participant

5, along with Graduation for the Class of 2013.
