    Bon-Dori, is a Japanese Tradi-tional Summer Dance Festival.During summer evenings every-where in Japan, the local com-munity enjoys BonDori (Dance)

    in the near by parks or play-grounds. This tradition wasoriginated when the farmersthanked the Rice Paddock Godfor a good summer crop.

    Haarii Dragon Boat Race, Tra-dition holds that if the Haarii bellechoes, then the rainy season isover and summer is finally in fullswing. According to Uminchu

    (Okinawan dialect for fisherman)who give thanks for the sea'sbounty and pray for a good har-vest and safe fishing, this mag-nificent festival represents thefanfare of Okinawa's long sum-mer

    useful words and phrases for daily Japanese living.

    Japanese Culture Classes & Tours

    at the Airman & Family Readiness Center

    Sanshin

    >Date & Time: 6, 13, 20 & 27 June 1700 - 1800

    >Where to meet: A&FRC Classroom

    Learn a traditional Ryukyu song on the Sanshin, an Okinawan

    3-string instrument. Participants can start at anytime.

    Japanese Bi-Cultural Workshop

    >Date & Time: 11 June, 1300-1500

    >Where to meet: A&FRC Culture Room

    This session is designed for Japanese Spouses who would like to learn

    more about the American culture and military life style. It will help build

    and expand your network.

    Japanese Basic Step 1>Date & Time: 4, 6 ,11, 13, 18, 20, 25 & 27 June 1730 - 1900

    >Where to meet: A&FRC Classroom

    This is a 4 week language class focusing on proficiency of speech and

    practical application.

    Kimono Wearing

    A great way to learn a different marriage culture.

    Newcomers Island Excursion

    >Date & Time: 21 June, 1000 - 1500

    >Where to meet: Schilling Community Center

    Explore the history, culture and customs of Okinawa on this free bus trip.

    Bring a snack lunch or yen for a light Japanese lunch and purchasing

    souvenirs. Registration required. Open to all ages.
