Not all the summer fun is geared for the kids. There are six summer happy hours planned, including three poolside at West. On June 23, beer connoisseurs will want to attend an exciting new event, the Downtown St. Louis Brewery Tour.

The defending World Series champs are in the middle of what is shaping up to be another great baseball season. The Jack Buck Grill is the ideal gathering spot before and after Cardinal home games. Also, the Grill is now open for breakfast on the weekend and has rolled out a new menu. And back by popular demand, Lobsterfest will debut in the Grill beginning in late June.

Golf season is in full swing. You can hit the links at one of the outstanding private clubs where MAC members and guests can play. The highlight of the season will be the MAC Golf Classic on Aug. 27 at the Country Club at the Legends. Round up a team to enjoy a fun day of golf and camaraderie to benefit the MAC Preservation Foundation.

Making connections has been a cornerstone of the MAC since its inception. Today, many of those connections with fellow members and with the Club are happening through the MAC Facebook page. If you haven’t already, go to facebook.com/macstl and “like” the MAC. You will find me there! Join the conversation and view photos from Club events, videos, fitness tips, special offers and more.

Stay connected to your Club, where camaraderie is experienced and relationships are forged.

You may be wondering what our Board is doing on this month’s

Cherry Diamond cover gathered around three big buckets. It is just a fun way to shine a light on what will be a top priority for our Club going forward. You will be hearing a lot more about our Club trying to fill three buckets – Membership, Banquets and Overnight Guest Rooms.

I have enjoyed working closely with our new General Manager Wally Smith to help chart the future direction of our Club. I have invited Wally to write a monthly column for the Cherry Diamond. I think it will be beneficial to hear from the operational leader of our Club. Read his column this month to learn more about the three buckets and other important Club news.

I want to touch briefly on one of the “buckets” – Membership. In April, a net positive of 24 new members joined the Club. And through the Platinum Partnership program, 23 current members began enjoying reduced dues as a result of sponsoring a new member. Introduce a new member to our Club and you too can begin to enjoy lower monthly dues.

Twelve years ago, I joined the MAC to play basketball and meet people. The Club has become much more than that; it has played an important part of my daily life. It is a destination featuring two locations to gather with family, business associates and some of my closest friends. Fitness, racquetball, tennis, spinning, golf and dining are just a few of the activities the Karsten family routinely participates in. You will hear me talk a lot over the next year about

the benefits of utilizing the Club more often.

The Board recently held our annual Summit where we reviewed the past year and focused on identifying goals for the year ahead. One of the major priorities will be long range planning. Through the leadership of Chairman Chris Michalak and his committee - coupled with the vision and expertise of Wally Smith - a detailed document will be created to guide our Club’s future. The Board and staff can adjust it annually as needed, but this plan will serve as an important road map moving forward.

It is truly an honor to begin my term as the 97th president of the Missouri Athletic Club. I look forward to working with this Board and would like to welcome the new class of Governors who were elected in May: Greg Beekman, Kim DeMotte, Dean Eggerding, John Noce and John Salter. Also, a special thanks to outgoing President Tom Albus and his classmates Justin Fowler, Bob Hagnauer, John Kingston and Don Stork. I enjoyed working with them and they are to be congratulated for providing excellent leadership in serving our Club.

As the father of two young children, we are heading into a particularly fun time of year. I am excited for a busy summer with my wife Kerrie and children Katelynn and Ben. There are numerous opportunities for family fun at MAC West including swimming, sports camps, dive-in movies and dining. The Downtown Clubhouse will also be bursting with summer fun, highlighted by the VP Parade and Fair Saint Louis.

Election ExcitementBeekman, DeMotte, Eggerding, Noce and Salter Elected to the Board

The Missouri Athletic Club has many traditions, but election day is

arguably the most unique. No private club in America holds an election quite like the MAC. From the gauntlet to a day of old-fashioned campaigning, Club spirit fills the Downtown clubhouse at the MAC election.

On May 3, election festivities got rolling in the afternoon when enthusiastic campaign workers lined the voting gauntlet poised to persuade voters to choose their candidate. Later in the day, members were treated to a complimentary dinner. The camaraderie and socializing culminated with the announcement of the winners at 8 p.m.

When the dust settled, MAC members elected five new governors to serve on the 15-member Board. Elected to the 2014-15 class of the Board of Governors were Greg Beekman, Kim DeMotte, Dean Eggerding, John Noce and John Salter.

Beekman is a Corporate and Transactional Attorney for Lewis, Rice & Fingersh, L.C. A member since 1998, he served on the Membership Committee, has been active in the basketball league and has been a committee member of numerous successful campaigns.

DeMotte is a Team Performance Professional for the Kenton Group, LLC. He has been a member since 2002 and has served on the Membership Committee, Nominating Committee and numerous governor campaigns. He is an active member of CWC’s including being a founding member of Toastmasters and vice president of (and soloist in) the Apollos.

Eggerding is the Vice President of USI. He has been a member since 2001, and has served on the Membership Committee, been active in the basketball leagues, MAC golf, the MAC Golf

Preservation Committee and has worked on several election campaigns.

Noce is retired from Bi-State, where he worked as the Sr. Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. He has been a member since 2003, and has served on

the Finance, Audit, Membership and Athletic Committees. He is also very active in several CWC’s.

Salter is the Chief Financial Officer at Wunderlich Fibre Box Company. He has been a member since 1989, and has served on the Annual Election Inspection & Policing and

Finance Committees. In late May, the new governors were

sworn into office and began their three-year terms. Also, the new class of senior officers who were elected in March began their one-year positions. The new senior officers are President Joel L. Karsten, First Vice-President David P. Weiss, Second Vice-President Christopher Michalak, Secretary Daniel D. Fusz, and Treasurer Gordon D. Bush.

From the General Manager’s DeskThe MAC is Awesome !

As I sit down to write my first letter to the membership of the Missouri Athletic Club,

I am honored, enthusiastic and so proud. It is such an honor to become a part of this storied Club, and I am thrilled to be working with our excellent Board and staff. I am so proud to be your general manager and look forward to doing all in my power to build upon the deep traditions, while propelling our systems and programs toward “Obvious Platinum Club Status.”

I would be remiss if I did not thank President Tom Albus. My last 25 years have been spent in and around clubs, and I have worked with as many Presidents. Tom Albus is absolutely one of the very best and has done an incredible job through very difficult times. He and the Board “cleared the deck,” so to speak, and provided me with a solid playing field, realistic budgets and all the support I could ever imagine. I would also like to shout out to Larry Thompson, who is such a class act and gentleman. Larry has been a tremendous help and eased our transition with grace and support. Thank you LT.

So now as I conclude my first 90 days and get deeper into my first chapter with the MAC, a number of things have become quite apparent. There are opportunities everywhere. As we dig through various options, three primary buckets leapt to the forefront and now are quickly becoming our “theme song” at the staff, board and committee levels. This is not an earth-shattering revelation, but rather a common sense view of our business and needed initiatives going forward.

First, the Board and staff have done the heavy lifting cutting costs across the entire system. The key now is to sell our way back to “Obvious Platinum Club Status.” And, the obvious buckets we need to continuously fill are Membership, Banquets and Rooms.

In analyzing our systems, these three areas are where we have the most to gain, and the best opportunity to generate the cash flow needed to steam us onward. So we need ask ourselves in all that we do, will these efforts generate membership growth opportunities, put members and guests in our banquet areas and create opportunities to sell rooms. With these areas identified, and us constantly asking that question, we become focused and proactive in filling our buckets that matter most.

Pretty simple stuff, but when we succeed, funds are generated for facility improvement, staff development, member programing and enhancing the MAC experience for you and your fellow members. We all have a role in the success of The Missouri Athletic Club. This is your Club, so enjoy all The MAC has to offer, and please keep our three buckets in mind. Together, we will get to that “Obvious Platinum Club Status.”

All this begs the question, what is this “Obvious Platinum Club Status” all about? I look forward to sharing that concept as my topic in the Cherry Diamond. In the mean time, please help us fill our buckets and let me know if I can ever do anything to make your MAC experience better than your last one.All the best, Wally

If you have a child or grandchild who is approaching 25, encourage

them to join the Club and reap the benefits of the Legacy Program. The Legacy Program gives a member’s children who have outgrown their family’s membership, at age 25, the ability to begin their own membership. The program dictates that any direct descendent of an active member in good standing with the Club does not have to pay an initiation fee when joining the Club. For resident members, this can mean a savings of up to $1,000.

Many legacies that join the Club attribute their interest in the MAC to fond memories of childhood. With the legacy program, children are always exempt from initiation fees, no matter their age. Also, their monthly dues and fees obligation are determined by their age and interests.

“We are delighted for our member’s children to join the Club so they can continue to enjoy the many benefits and privileges they have known through the years,” said Julie Kueper, Membership Recruitment Executive. “We have become the ultimate family Club—fully embracing all ages. It is wonderful to see a family of three generations participating in the wide variety of athletic, dining and social activities that are offered. The MAC is the perfect place for families to continue to spend time together.”

If you are interested in the Legacy Program or would like more information, please contact Patti Cundiff in the Downtown membership office at 314-539-4429 or Julie Kueper in the West office at 314-539-4408. Legacy members can join at any time and pay monthly dues determined by age classification.

He is also a registered and licensed dietitian with a masters degree in nutrition and Physical Performance from Saint Louis University. “Mandy’s CST was not what I expected, certainly not your father’s massage,” said Governor Kim DeMotte. “I was suffering pretty agonizing knee pain, and within an hour, I walked out of her office with significantly reduced pain. After five sessions, I was back to golf; it didn’t even hurt my score!”

To book an appointment with Mandy, call 314-539-4481. The same massage therapies are offered at the West Clubhouse. To book an appointment at West, call 314-539-4423.

Accounting

The MAC Accounting Department is headed by Chief Financial

Officer Larry Absheer. Larry has been with the MAC for 16 years. His favorite part of his job is solving problems facing the Club and keeping the general manager informed. “The challenge is surviving and thriving,” Absheer said. “We must preserve this great institution for our members to enjoy, and for the employees to have jobs.”

Pam Roth is the accounting manager and has been with the MAC for 12 years. She supervises the team, prepares numerous reports for the Board of Governors and organizes the tax accounting for the Club. Her favorite part of the job is the variety in tasks. “There’s always something different to do,” Roth said. “There’s a lot going on. I have met a lot of interesting people. I have a great team. They’re doing a great job.”

Joyce Kroll, who is the bookkeeper at West, has a long history at the West Clubhouse. She worked at the Town & Country Racquet Club before the MAC purchased the facility in 1995. She has been in this role for 25 years, 17 years with the MAC. Her responsibilities include managing all of the billing at West and answering billing questions. “I really like my job. I like the people,” Kroll said. “I was really happy when the MAC came in. They had the resources to help the Club reach its full potential.”

Debbie Valloni, who has been with the MAC since February 2009, works in accounts payable. She pays all of the bills that come through for both Clubhouses. Debbie also posts invoices and pays them weekly. Her

favorite part of the job is the challenge of it. “When things don’t balance, it’s fun to figure out what’s wrong,” Valloni said. “We make sure everything’s the way it’s supposed to be. We balance to the penny.”

Betty Ambrose, who has been with the MAC for 11 years, is the administrative assistant to General Manager Wally Smith and Absheer. Her responsibilities include Club licensing, managing office supplies and handling administrative support for Absheer. “The favorite part of my job is making the financial packets for the Finance Committee,” Ambrose said. “I prepare the packets and put them at the table before the finance meetings.”

Heather Taylor, who works in member billing and accounts receivable, has been with the MAC since April 2010.

Her responsibilities include posting member payments and member billing. Her favorite part of the job is interacting with members. “I’m very customer-service oriented. I enjoy working with the members.”

The one thing that is obvious about the Accounting Department is their camaraderie and passion for the job at hand. They work hard as a team and support each other. They make sure their individual hard work is noticed and appreciated as part of the team effort.

“[Larry Absheer and Pam Roth] are really good bosses,” Taylor said. “They have expectations of us, but they’re really appreciative of everything we do and our attention to detail. We all help each other out.”

The attention-to-detail in the Accounting Department is apparent. They must look at every chit and make sure the proper amount is billed to the right member. Every chit is processed manually and double-checked for

Spotlight

accuracy. It’s important that the writing is legible.

The Accounting Department hosts birthday parties for the staff. Every time it is an MAC employee’s birthday, they can be sure the Accounting Department is going to wish them well and give them a birthday cake. It is the details of the Accounting Department that make it so special; not even a birthday is missed or forgotten by this team.

Skeet and Trap Shoot

By Judith Hanses

The Forever Young Club was off again in April, this time for a

tour of Scott Air Force Base. Almost fifty members enjoyed a day of discovery and learning.

After clearing security at the main gate, a ride around the air base surprised us with the huge area it covers. Scott began life as a relatively small air base (624 acres) established during WWI as a training base for pilots, and has grown to 3.7 square miles and a full-time population of over 3,500 military and civilian members.

Our first stop was the Scott Club, a combined facility with separate sections for officers and enlisted personnel. FYC members who had served in the military remarked that it was a big change from the old days when officer and enlisted clubs were at opposite ends of every military installation.

Scott Air Force Base is home to the headquarters of many major military organizations, making it a principal location for support of our nation’s

defense. At the Illinois Air

National Guard section we saw the 126th Air Refueling Wing’s large refueling tanker planes currently used to keep U.S. fighter and cargo planes in the air over the Middle East.

FYC members had the opportunity to receive a mission briefing at the secure headquarters of the U.S. Transportation Command. We felt like raw recruits being escorted and counted at every turn, including visits to the rest rooms. Fortunately, no FYC members were cornered by the military dogs or taken into custody by the Air Patrol for violating security.

To cap off a fascinating day, FYC members enjoyed an authentic German meal at the Roemer Topf Restaurant in Mascoutah, Ill. Roy and Renate Gray, MAC members who own the restaurant, served a delicious Bavarian buffet that made us want to return there soon.

The Apollos took their audience on a Broadway tour during their

69th annual spring concert. Following a delicious dinner and welcome from Apollos President Don Costello, MAC Vice President Justin Fowler introduced the candidates running for the Board of Governors.

After the candidate announcement, Apollos director Marc Strathman led the group through Broadway favorites. Songs included: “Give My Regards to Broadway,” “Ding, Dong, the Witch is Dead,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “And All that Jazz,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” and several other Broadway classics. Following the performance, members and guests enjoyed the afterglow.

In movie courtrooms, it seems one attorney is always

straightforward, while the other may be just a bit sneaky. The judge is learned and fair, and justice is served before closing credits. A satisfactory ending, perhaps, but not necessarily correct. As St. Louis attorney Michael Gunn opines, “The question is, just how close are the courtroom scenes in the movies to real life? How much is schmaltz and how much is reality?

THE MAC EXPERIENCE Letters from MAC Members & Guests

Downtown Catering,

Thank you again for hosting a wonderful Authors Brunch for Assistance League St. Louis. The ballroom was spectacular, your staff of waiters and waitresses were flawless and so friendly, and the meal that Chef Bart created was phenomenal. You did a great job of supporting our ever changing program as the guests gobbled down the delicious meal in record time. Sorry to make it tough on you by changing the schedule, but I did not expect them to finish the meal so quickly. It worked out well so we could finish ahead of schedule and give the authors more time for signings. All who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and they were very complimentary of the food and the amenities of the MAC. Please give our thanks to everyone who supported the event, and let them know what a fantastic job they did for our big event.

Regards,Jane Harbron

St. Louis has a soccer tradition that is

unmatched by any city in America. The Gateway City is regarded as the soccer capital of the U.S. That reputation dates back to 1950, when a group of St. Louis boys led the United States to a shocking upset of England in the World Cup. Later, Saint Louis University would dominate the college soccer world throughout much of the 1960s and 1970s. The Billikens ten (10) national championships are a record. Local players like Taylor Twellmann, Pat Noonan, Steve Ralston and Lori Chalupny have all gone on to successful pro careers.

St. Louis soccer fans can catch a glimpse of the next generation of soccer stars on Saturday, June 30. The MAC is once again hosting the High School Senior All-Star games, featuring the top prep boys and girls soccer players

in the St. Louis area. This year, UMB Bank is teaming up with the MAC to sponsor the event. The games will be held at the Anheuser-Busch Center in Fenton with the girls game kicking off at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 8 p.m.

Players are selected by the Eastern Missouri High School Coaches Association. Annually, these games feature a number

of bright young players who go on to make their mark at some of the top college programs in the country. The event has grown in popularity in recent years, attracting media coverage. Tickets can be purchased at the

event: $5 for adults and $3 for students. Parking is $2.

Hosting the High School All-Star Games enhances the Club’s effort to promote amateur soccer both locally and nationally. The MAC annually honors the top collegiate soccer players with the presentation of the Hermann Trophy.

1910The MAC announced free Club tele-phone service to its members in June 1910. At the time, it was the only living room service in St. Louis to have tele-phone service at no charge.

1929MAC member Col. H.D. McBride, who was the Boy Scout commissioner of St. Louis, led 32 Boy Scouts on a jamboree tour of Europe, starting June 29, 1929. The group toured England, France, Germany, Switzerland and Belgium. The St. Louis scouts represented all

American Boy Scouts at the World Jamboree, which was an international Boy Scout conference in Birkenhead, England, that represented Boy Scouts of 42 countries. The St. Louis team showcased snakes from the St. Louis Zoo as the feature for the American camp, which was viewed by an estimated 100,000 visitors.

1941After a seven-year installation, the MAC became the first and then-only fully air-conditioned private club in the United States, in late June 1941.

1944The 1944 National League Champion Cardinals visited the fifth floor for a day of workouts. Included among the visitors were Cardinals ace Mort Cooper and his brother Walker Cooper, the Cardinals starting catcher; Johnny Hopp, first baseman-outfielder; and Max Lanier, an outstanding left-handed pitcher.

1949Square dancing was the big craze. The Club went western and held a cowboy-themed party called the “49er Dance” in June. Cowboy clothes and bright dirndl dresses set the theme, and the dining room was renamed “Goldie’s Dance Palace” for the evening. Over 100 couples took to square dancing at the same time.
