1 Saturday 25 th June 2011 President’s Pen If you take note, all the tables & kitchen benches have new tops fitted by Wayne Hudson. Wayne has also relocated the social board & Thundersticks picture. Thanks mate. Hans has recently managed to get a Thundersticks shirt signed for our Silent Auction. This will be a much sought after prize; you can put a bid in at the bar. Well done Hans, could you please thank the Thundersticks on behalf of the club. As you know, the raffle was won by Neil Ashley. A second raffle for the same prize is now underway for those who missed out, at $2 per ticket it is great value. This was donated by Jinder from Hockey International. Do not forget the Pub Crawl this week - I am sure the boys will behave themselves, ha! If you missed a ticket you can still go by following the bus, but please, guys stay safe & watch out for your fellow members. I had the pleasure of actually sitting down on Sunday night & watching the whole game of Provisional 2 gold girls play & beat Fremantle. I was very impressed in their performance; they looked well oiled & coached. Well done girls, keep up the good work & congratulations to Gerard for the professional coaching you are giving them. To some house keeping, people please read the no dog signs on the entrance gate, it is a council law, not ours & we do not want to get into trouble if something goes wrong like maybe a child being bitten. It is also not a pleasant duty to have to tell people to remove their dogs. Sunday juniors, we have repeatedly asked you to put the goals away after the games. It is not fair to have one of the staff have to do it by themselves as it is quiet strenuous by yourself. This is also a health & safety

requirement, as a child has lost their life by playing on top of one & it toppled over him. Most Sundays it is done & if you are not the last game could the managers please ask the other teams to do it. Leo Welten fixed all the nets on your goals & put them away, thanks Leo & Happy Birthday for Saturday you old f—t. To the minkies, no-one turn up to help on the bbq Saturday, fortunately Dee saw us in trouble & helped out, thanks Dee. We only ask you to do it once a year for 15 minutes as it is rotated between the teams & it stops the line going out the front gates, with everyone getting served fast. Now on a lighter note, if you want to have a good laugh, go down to the Peanut Gallery on game day at the far grandstand & be entertained with good hockey & the things that come out of babes mouths, all in great fun. Well done hecklers 1 2 & 3. That’s it, see you next week Steve McEntee President STEVE MCENTEE’S

PREMIER LEAGUE Mens Premier Alliance vs YMCC No report Ladies Willow Bridge League vs Subs (Lost 1 - 2) Best: T. Cousens Goals: J. Leach Lots of positive passages of play this week girls, we now just have to work on playing consistent strong hockey for the whole 70 minutes. It's really important that we all commit to taking what we learn from training and applying that to our individual and team game. Keep you heads up girls, week off next week then we will come back stronger than ever! Ladies Promotion 2 vs Modernians Best: The Whole Team A magnificent team hockey display! The team was able to dominate the mid field then combine to set up some superb forward runs up both wings. It was great to have our short corners coming together to support the field goals. PROVISIONAL LEAGUE Mens Provisional 1 vs Aquinas (Lost 0 - 3) Best: K. Jamieson, L. Woodward, A. Wragg We just weren't there mentally for the first half of the game and they capitalised on it. We were to busy playing their game and didn't stick to our strengths. We gave away too many turnovers and needed to look for the early ball to avoid the tackles. We held them in the second half and had a couple of opportunities, but too little too late. Let's switch on from the start next week! Ladies Provisional 1 vs Old Aquinians (Lost 1 - 2) Best: S. Coggan, R. Oakey, E. Woodberry Goals: C. Walker Urgency, composure and a need to put the ball in the net…that was our pre-game brief. Some great work by the whole team - bursts of speed and brilliance on display, but we missed out on converting our opportunities. Some extra work at training this week will see us take better advantage of those scoring opportunities for the next game.

It was such a tremendous team effort with stick-to-stick passing, great communication and excellent team spirit. Fremantle came out hard and strong but we remained composed and played our short passing team game. Krystle scored a beauty off a short corner and Ally nailed a lovely deflection. Our press worked really well especially with Courtney trapping like a champion. Highlight of the night was Gerard naming us the best team he's ever coached - we're so lucky to have you Gerard!

Ladies Provisional 3 Gold vs Hale (Lost 1 - 4) Best: C. Morgan, L. Walkemeyer, M. Leighton Goals: L. Walkemeyer Scared is the word that sprung to mind on the weekend that’s what we did to Hale. Nil all at half time and the first goal up after half time I could feel the panic from the side. The girls (or I should say women) we played had obviously been together for a long tome and it was great to see we weren’t intimidated. We put together some great periods of play with passing sequences with more than 4-5 and this was the difference in our play (when we have it they don’t). Best game I have seen Jen play - especially in the first half making saves any keeper would be proud of (maybe some concentration 2nd half)! Everyone contributed, the best part about it was the spirit and “let’s have a go” attitude, keep this girls and improvement will continue on all levels. Mens Provisional 4 - BYE

Mens Metro 1 vs University (Won 3 - 0) Best: M. Watton, M. Deveson, T. Barrett Goals: M. Deveson (2), M. Watton Without the Matt Read Pre Game talk to digest this week, the team went out looking a lot less confused. Not surprisingly this translated into a return to the winners circle against a quality opposition. Credit to the defence which gave little away all day (except 13 short corners), and the state selectors, whose selection of Watto inspired a run that saw him single handedly goosify 13 opponents (he ran around one bloke twice and there was a lady on the sideline flapping her umbrella at him who copped it as well), before coolly slotting it over the advancing keeper off his reverse. Mens Metro 3 Black vs Newman Knights (Won 2 - 1) Best: B. Wake, T. McEntee, D. Kidd Goals: T. McEntee, D. Kidd This one is dedicated to Matty Willis who thought my previous reports a bit bland… It was a cold and wintery day, yet the team filed out on the field with hope blossoming within their breast. Today was the day of change, the day we achieved a win. With a rallying pep talk from Matty we walked proud and confident onto the field determined to change our luck. Our star centre half Darren (determined to make amends after his girly bee sting from the previous week) scored an early goal before the tyrants of Newman struck him a fatal blow and he was unable to continue. Tim in all his fine form and usual cursing and yelling managed to actually score a goal (shortly after complaining and yelling at others to NOT use their back stick...)before quickly becoming embroiled in a battle of wits against some very unruly knights before taking his leave of the field before something truly unruly happened and could have actually led to a red card. Thank you Darren for showing me the way... All that being said, it was a a game of quarters, the first we were strong and showed our strengths, but fell into our old habits and were lucky to have Brad keeping for us with some great saves. Lets hope we can continue the change of luck against the top side next week. Good win boys… VETERANS Mens Midweek Masters vs YMCC No report Ladies Rae Blunt Pennant vs Hale (Lost 0 - 1) Best: A. Armstrong-Boase/N. Johnson, A. Hall/D. Tyson Thanks to Mini for being our 11th player tonight.... We played a great first half and had Dehlia been playing AFL she would have got a few behinds - her shots were awesome but just kept going wide. With the second half came the rain and we stopped running and playing our game - the defence were solid the whole game but hale got on top and finally got one past Nat. Good game ladies.

Ladies Masters Div 3 vs Joondalup (Lost 1 - 5) Best: L. Coss, M. Margetts, N. Ogden Goals: S. Brockman Well we only played with 9 players. Girls you have a commitment to the team. A phone call to Lynda or Jan is required by lunch time if you can't play. It's a team game, respect your team mates. Considering we were 2 down we had more than our fair share of the play. Simone scored our only goal and specky at theat, a good run girls. Think what we can do with a full team. Mens Masters 40-1 - BYE

  • 10

Mens Masters 40-2 vs Suburban (Won 2 - 1) Best: D. Doak, G. Ranford, D. Ross Goals: G. Ranford, D. Ross A much deserved first win for the season. The team played well and have slowly come together each week. A great effort by everyone. A slight upset in the reserve management as the umpire stopped the game claiming we had too many players on the field. We thought we were substituting Tatie after the umpire showed him five fingers and told him to move. We didn't know the umpire had sent him off when we sent Rob on. But then again, Tatie didn't tell us either… Mens Masters 40-4 vs Subs (Drew 1 - 1) Best: T. Patton, D. Stonehouse/G. Singh, P. Paino/G. Kent First half we had 90% of the play but just could not convert. In the second half they put us under pressure and scored first. A couple of minutes later Gurmeet sent a great ball to Jaspal on the post and we leveled the score. Thanks to Ted and welcome to Steve McEntee. Mens Masters 50-1 vs Hale (Won 4 - 1) Best: R. Scanlon, P. Meacock, C. Howell Goals: C. Howell (2), P. Matthews, D. Dedman Played at Hale on their hard and fast grass grounds. A danger game for us with our long list of injuries (excuses if you ask me), it goes something like this; broken nose, sore back, sore knees and semi retired. Our focus before the game was use our bench and rotate players off and on quickly. With some great passages of play saw us put alot of pressure on the Hale defence. A very tough and physical game that kept our own umpires very busy dishing out plenty of cards. Well done guys on a great win and next week will be our biggest challenge of the year. Quote of the Game "I might play full back this week so I don't have to run much." To our hard working, hard running full backs well done on another tough game. Mens Masters 50-2 Best: L. Borthwick, C. Slattery, B. Morrison Certainly as we get older we do not get any smarter, this is evidenced by our goalkeeper Mike Jolliffe who showed up and played with one kicker and our half back Eric Nell who when given an umpiring duty last week "Melville v Southern River @ Buzzacott" promptly when to Southern River...and the guy flogs real estate for a living!!! In an unimpressive game Colin Slattery scored maybe the second goal of his not very illustrious career and promptly bought a round for the team in celebration, Slats the beer was almost worth having to hear about it again & again & again.

Mens Masters 50-3 vs Hale (Won 3 - 1) Best: J. Orr, B. Porter/L. Welten, G. Bowater Goals: D. Porter, M. Hudson, L. Welten We came, we scored, we concurred. Well that’s the story but not the game?? We played terrible for three quarters. There were many missed goals. But from all that, amongst the ashes came the best player, JOHNNO??? See guys you put your body to the frontline and use your head to deflect balls - people notice. Well done. Mens Masters 60 vs Whitfords (Won 1 - 0) Best: P. Hall, J. Smith, G. Riley Goals: K. Platel A hard fought game, in which we had to work hard defending a one goal lead for most of the game. Great team work by Ray and Keith to score that early goal via a diving deflection (one of Keith's trade marks) at the right post. Also great work by the whole team to hang in there against good opposition, and maintain second position on the ladder. JUNIORS Boys 11/12A vs Rockingham (Won 9 - 2) Best: J. Moore, R. Hall, R. Vickery Goals: R. Hall (3), N. Tate (3), R. Vickery (2), T. Geers Metropolis was unguarded as it was with the thanks of the team and supporters that Superman took residence in the Melville phone box for the evening. Superlatives cannot adequately describe the quality displayed. Uniquely for the season Melville scored the first goal of the game. For Jordy, (aka Superman), to be rewarded as the best player of the match where the result is 9-2 indicates far too many opportunities were provided to the opposition and the win was not perhaps as convincing as the score suggests. The boys can rightly bathe in victory but it was provided without conviction or intensity. Save for moments in the first stanza the battle was pedestrian requiring Superman to remain in costume for the duration. The kryptonite was the defensive co-ordination where everyone must contribute otherwise goals will be scored – Superman can only do so much. The score-line pleases but to be greedy a double-digit score was achievable. Opportunities were plentiful but were only that. Ponder how goals can be scored in moments but cannot be replicated for the duration. Like a persistent 2 year old, why? There was humour and a growing confidence in the change-rooms. We are satisfied with the result but acknowledge more endeavour and application is necessary. Some forging, grinding, honing and sharpening will create the lethal weapon that this team can and needs to be.

Boys 11/12B Black Maroon vs Rockingham (Won 4 - 0) Best: C. Noone, C. Ashby, K. Hill Goals: C. Ashby (2), B. Thompson, B. Gauci Well done boys! We may need to be a little more creative with our goal shooting next time we are up against their goalie. Boys 11/12B Black White - BYE

. Girls 11/12A vs Willeton Reds (Won 2 - 0) Best: K. Silvey, M. Harper, G. Mason Goals: R. Clay, K. Silvey Welcome back girls. It was great to see the girls put training into practice. Their press was impressive, keeping Willeton from breaking out of their defensive half. We had moments when our passing was fabulous, and we looked good, but we need to keep this consistent throughout the entire game. The second half kept the parents well entertained, but girls it would be nice to score off a short corner!

Parents/Managers: Any photos you take of your team would be much appreciated by the club, both for our website and for the end of year book. Please send them to me (email [email protected]) - arrangements can be made for larger file transfers as well. Brad Wake Maroon Zone editor 2011.

Girls 11/12B vs WASPS (Lost 1 - 2) Best: A. Widger, C. Lawther, T. Vince Goals: H. Gibson Today’s game was at Yokine reserve against WASPS. Despite their first half dominance the girls conceded an early goal. With the amount of time spent in the offensive half it was frustrating to see no result by half time with the girls trailing 1 - 0. Come the second half, the girls maintained their dominance and put in an early goal thanks to Hannah Gibson. The game was decided after the final whistle had blown with a short corner awarded to WASPS who were lucky enough to finish off with a match winning goal. Boys 9/10A vs Aquinas/Willetton (Won 3 - 0) Best: C. McHugh, F. Hay, J. Lawrence, J. Coleman Goals: F. Hay (2), C. McHugh The boys showed up to play on Sunday morning. Against a recently promoted Aquinas team the boys showed determination and teamwork to beat them 3-0. Goal of the game came from an amazing steal by Chris who was left with just the goalie to beat and hit the ball into the top right corner! Also a change in positions was just what we needed to get the boys back to winning ways. Hopefully we can keep this form up and win next week! Girls 9/10A vs Willetton Reds (Won 6 - 1) Best: R. Harrup/J. Miller/K. Rule, S. Matthews, A. McNess Goals: A. Watson (2), G. Bowyer, R. Harrup, I. Nelson, K. Rule Great all round team effort beating our local rivals Willetton 6-1. This just shows how well we can play when following Pete's instructions. With everyone contributing, we can really show the other teams what we are made off. Girls 9/10A Reserve vs Rockingham (Lost 0 - 5) Best: T. Stephens, E. King, A. Mitchell Tough game and the opposition have grown a lot throughout the season. Everyone worked hard to win the ball but need to work on getting into a scoring opportunity. Thank you to Eliza and Esther for playing for us at such short notice and doing a fabulous job!

Boys 9/10B Black vs Wolves (Lost 1 - 2) 2011-06-12 Best: C. Deacon, J. Paterson, P. Smits Goals: L. Kannemeyer An unfortunate loss this week, the team played well but were unlucky not to score a second goal. A terrific save by Jack on the goal line kept us in the game, plenty of good saves by Peter as well. The build up through the mid field improves every week and that is resulting in more chances at goals. Boys 9/10B Black (Won 3 - 2) 2011-06-19 Best: T. Mansfield Goals: L. Kannemeyer, A. Metcalfe, W. Ross What a game this week. A slow start to the morning meant WASPS had the early goals, and thing did not too good on the field for our team. WASPS had plenty of scoring opportunities in both halves that fialed to hit the mark. Two short corner goals and a good field goal managed to snatch victory from a certain defeat. It as we slowly wore down their defence. Girls 9/10B Gold - BYE Boys 9/10C vs Mazenod (Won 7 - 1) Best: J. Cornwall, S. Elston, M. Cocliff Goals: S. Elston (3), J. Cornwall (2), S. Robertson, M. Cocliff Today’s game saw us play Mazenod for the second time this season and it was great to see how much both teams had improved. With four of our regular players away through injury, illness and other commitments we had to call in help. Thanks to Matthew, Harrison, Mason and Danika who all played with us today, your team work and willingness to play a second game was greatly appreciated by the boys and parents. After suffering two losses, the boys were out to prove they were a strong side and had what it took to win games. This was a game in which many of the boys stepped up and saw some score their first goal for the Club. This week we were able to move our boys around a little giving them a chance to try a new position. Alex became a wing and had some excellent plays. It was unfortunate he didn’t score a goal but he did assist with at least one. (So he tells me!)

  • 17

Nick Ireland, who had been ill all week, was able to try his hand on the wing and at fullback. Despite not feeling well and regularly subbing off he played a solid game. Our first goal of the game set the tone when Jonathon made an excellent square pass to just in front of goals where Samuel was waiting. Samuel and Jonathon worked very well together as they were able to pre-empt each other’s actions and ensure they were always in the right position to assist. Their understanding of each other resulted in a further two goals. Danika who helped us on the wing, confused the Mazenod boys as they didn’t expect her to be so confident. Like Alex, she was unlucky to score a goal but it wasn’t for a lack of trying. The boys played a solid game in both attack and defence. We hope they will take this new found drive and strength into their game next week. If they can play like that every week, they will have the opposition running in circles. Well done boys on a great win. Boys 7/8A vs Westside Wolves (Lost 1 - 3) Best: R. Beddoes, J. Thorn, S. Cocks Goals: J. Ross Really close and tough game against the Westside Wolves. Our Melville boys scored the first goal and were looking good. Wolves scored a goal before half time to give a 1-1 half time score. In the second half the game play was solid, however Wolves were able to score 2 good goals to give them a 3-1 victory. A great game game from Richard Beddoes and a really good contribution from Sammuel Cocks and Jonathon Thorn. Jamie Ross continues to score goals and overall it was a good effort. Girls 7/8A vs Riverside Lions No report Boys 7/8A Reserve vs UWA Green (Lost 0 - 3) Best: M. Dixon This was a very disappointing result given the amount of possession that Melville had, particularly in the first half. Time and again we forced our way into the attacking "D" but couldn't convert. Come back Josh and Eddie, we need your firepower. The other thing that was evident was the

  • 18

difference in basic skills on grass. Uni trapped and passed well, not trying anything too fancy but keeping their play simple running to space and giving early, accurate passes. This is what we need to aspire to. We have too many games on grass to ignore these fundamentals of hockey. Great contributions from Macca and Nick. Both are more than capable of playing 7/8A Reserve grade. Thanks boys. Boys 7/8B Yellow vs Rockingham (Lost 1 - 3) Best: J. Parker, C. Addison, H. MacPherson Great game by he boys, fantastic first half goal and defensive work all game. just need to learn play on from free hits faster and be a bid more offensive. Best game I have seen all year. Girls 7/8B Black vs Riverside Lions Best: T. Widger, C. Fullarton, C. Browne/P. Cumper Goals: C. Dawes What a drizzly and grey day! We played the Lions at Vic Park with a few peppermint trees half heartedly given us cover from the rain. The game was messy like the weather. Both teams had difficulty hitting and trapping. Once again we dominated most of the play but unfortunately couldn't convert our many chances from our D. We relied too often on going up the left hand side of the field, being picked off easily by their defence. We had some good passages of play, but need to become more aggressive at the ball to win more contests. Girls 7/8 Gold vs UWA Yellow (Won 1 - 0) Best: T. Brits, S. Urbano, M. Stephens Goals: M. Stephens A two week break seems to have done wonders with the girls playing a good game to come away with the win. Again there were several shots on goal with Mikayla's persistence paying off with her first goal of the season. Tanya was moved from her usual position at full back and had a fantastic game at half back. Sonia also had one of her best games at inner. The bravery award goes to Jade who came off injured with a 'blow' to her ankle. After some first aid she insisted on going back on - this gave the whole team a lift and helped secure our win.

  • 19

Boys 7/8C vs Fremantle (Lost 0 - 1) Best: S. Hird, R. Breuer, S. Reynolds Well done boys on what was a very tight game. The two teams were evenly matched. Our boys ran hard for the entire game. Our goalie, Ryan Bruer played well and had many great saves. It was good to have an entire team this week! Same again please boys! Girls 7/8C vs Whitfords (Won 2 - 1) Best: M. Clarke, K. Davoren, K. Steffe What an exciting match for the girls, parents and the coach, the girls were all given a team plan to pass to given players which they did. They moved the ball well on both sides of the field, moving the ball into attack many times and holding possession of the ball well. It was hard to determine the best players as all the girls had good games. Thanks to Luka and Cassandra for playing, we would have played short without you two and we know that you both had good games and help the team in getting the win. Yes we finally have had a 'WIN'. The girls now have the confidence to play and should have the same winning feeling again when they take on teams from now on. Boys 5/6A vs Vic Park (Lost 2 - 3) Best: D. Forbes, D. Paino, O. Bodlovich The weather held off for us today and it was a tough match against some quality opposition. We are getting stronger each week and are seeing some great individual work on the field. If we can put that into a team strategy we will see better results and more wins. Some great work is being done at training in regards to setting up the play and passing the ball forward as a team... it just needs to transfer to game day. It was a very close game and was goal for goal all the way. Daniel put one in from a short corner in the first half and scores were level one all at half time. The second half began and a great run from Oliver took him into the D and a one on one with the goalie. He showed a cool head as the goalie charged at him, played it through the legs and scored a great goal. Well done! The opposition today really got in our face and we must stay strong over the ball and not be put off our shots in those situations. It's a tough call when just as you are about to take your hit the opposition sticks his head

right there... what do you do? It was another exciting day of hockey and who can complain when the matches are so even and the boys give it their all every week. Thats what it's all about. Despite a loss, it was a very good game. Girls 5/6A vs UWA Green (Lost 1 - 3) Best: A. Bell, M. Hagen, A. Stroobach Goals: A. Stroobach This was a game of 2 halves. In our first, we probably didn’t play our best hockey, while in the second, the girls showed more desire for the ball. Our passing was more accurate, and we put way more pressure on them in their circle. Apart from the first 5minutes when the coach was confusing things by sending Abi & Neasa into the wrong positions, the girls were generally better at playing in their positions this game than last week. Abi earned best player for relentless work in tackles and turn-overs, while Molly was superb in putting pressure on their defensive 16’s. Aysha worked hard on each attack, and it paid off when she finished off some superb team pressure with a goal. Lisa deserves a mention with her saving a chest high shot at goal and clearing several other attempts Girls 5/6B Black Maroon vs UWA Green (Lost 0 - 2) Best: B. Martin, E. Armitage, R. Clark An early morning in Swanbourne and the girls were off to a great start - attacking quickly and setting the scene for an incredibly exciting game. The first half saw the opposition score their two goals, and Ella did a fantastic job in goals kicking out another attempt just before half time. The second half saw the our girls come back with a bit of fire in their bellies, and we had FIVE short corners (... yes, that's right FIVE) in the second half, and came so close to getting a goal that the crowd/ cheer squad went wild in anticipation. We thought we might have to resuscitate some of the parents! We love the encouragement from the sideline, but if the girls keep this momentum up we may have to have St John's Ambulance on standby for the over excited parents! Great works girls, strong defence, you're passing the ball better and its great to hear you calling to each other. We dominated the game in the second half - you are getting hungry girls ... stay hungry! Special mention to Bryanna this week for working so hard to get the ball down to our goals, and to Emma and Eilidh for their

determination and focus, to Samantha Harwood for her tackles and to Charlotte for nearly getting a goal! Finally, I have noticed a wonderful sense of team spirit in this little group - Samantha Chisholm and Rachel Clark are particularly encouraging to their team mates - well done Samantha and Rachel. Girls 5/6B Black White vs UWA Blue (Won 4 - 0) Best: S. Hackett, E. Donaldson, E. Rolls Goals: E. Donaldson (2), S. Hackett (2) The girls are playing consistently well as a team and after last week’s nail-biter this week’s game gave us the opportunity to move the girls around a little. Thanks must go to Bryanna for again helping us out at short notice. She played a great game being asked to go from fullback to wing to halfback and showed great versatility in doing so. Grace has become a formidable full-back and showed strength and confidence when running the ball out of the D and up the wing on several occasions. She was ably supported by Emily who consistently sends the ball wide of the D. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it played through the middle. Danika has a natural ability as a goal-keeper and made some great saves today to keep the number of goals scored against our team to nil. We also had the opportunity to switch Eva to centre-half and Katherine to centre. Both girls are naturally defensive players so it will take a little more encouragement to get them to be more assertive and push forward but we can work on this at training. Poppy stepped into the role of halfback for this game and played a solid game. A little work is required on positioning herself on her strong side rather than trying to trap the ball with her back-stick but she was a pivotal player in our defence. The girls have learnt that good positioning in the D will ensure that they can capitalise on opportunities to score goals. All four goals today came from our wings who were sitting on the posts waiting for a loose ball which they could deflect into the goals. Well done to Sophie and Emma you have listened well at training and it’s good to see you put it into practice with great results. The final three “ferocious” forwards.... Ellen, Cassandra and Luka. You consistently attack the ball and read the play well. It is your assertiveness which keeps the ball moving forward so well done. Stella we hope you are over the Chicken Pox soon and can rejoin your team mates next week for what will be a tough game against the

Westside Wolves second team. Boys 5/6 Regional Black Maroon vs Fremantle Black (Drew 3 - 3) Best: M. Scally, L. Downey, S. Simpson Goals: R. Bright, C. Burgess, L. Downey Play like you train! Play like you train! Turn up-SWITCH ON! It was a great hard fought game today. Up 3-2 at half time and we kept persistently attacking. It's fair to say that had about 70% of the play and with a couple of narrow chances missed in the 2nd Half it could have been a different result. With Freo scoring their 3 goals from PCs that gives us something to work on during the week. It was GREAT to see that we are starting to play more as a Team. We keep the focus at training on attacking wide and then crossing to the spot. It works!! It works!! You proved it. Great goal from Cohen from the spot after a fantastic cross from Regan. This week - TRAIN LIKE YOU PLAY, PLAY LIKE YOU TRAIN! Boys 5/6 Regional Black White vs Fremantle White (Won 4 - 1) Best: M. Munro, F. Stephens, L. Berry OUR FIRST WIN FOR THE SEASON!! The boys struggled to make a team this week with only 8 players taking the field against Fremantle, and one sick player (Jacob Watson) supporting from the sideline. Fremantle supported us by giving us two players to help out, which was excellent sportsmanship. Thank you Fremantle. Our boys continued on from a great game last week, sticking to strong pushes, and staying in position. They played the ball nice and wide down to the wing, and our star wing player put him self in a great position to scoop in 2 goals. Our back players had a quiet game today but only because most of the play was in the forward line. The boys are building their confidence up as a team now, well done. To all our sick team members, Get Well Soon!! Boys 5/6 Regional Red Maroon vs Riverside Lions (Drew 1 - 0) Best: T. Alder/N. Tydeman/J. Walkemeyer/B. Whitelaw Goals: B. Jones A full strength side this week, saw a good early start with Braden scoring as CF in his first time in this role for the team. A cool head allowed him to

get past the goalie with a great sliding shot. The game ran at a fairly slow pace, the team keeping position well, but they all held back a bit compared to our last game. A ball cleared to the centre of the D allowed the opposition to equalise, a mistake on our part. The team struggled to move up a gear, but played well, without the edge they needed to win. Excellent defending again, great midfield work and goal keeping from both sides. The team had a few good breaks and stopped the opposition form moving the ball out of their 23 for long periods, but they just couldn't get the ball across the line. Excellent passing the the forward line was a joy to watch. A good game, which with a bit more passion would have been a great game. Well done, but we need to work harder boys! Boys 5/6 Regional Red White Best: T. Harvey, M. Harvey, J. Hardbottle Passing to teams mates was a bit poor today, too often instead of looking up and hitting, the ball was hit back into the other team players, instead of looking for our own team in the spaces, we made it look like they were all over the ground. When attacking we refused to push down the right hand side, the wings were free but we could not connect attack to defense. Need to work on controlling the ball where we want it to go. Good effort. We all learn alot more losing a game than winning. Girls 5/6 Regional Black vs Victoria Park (Won 1 - 0) Best: N. Konagai, I. Moncrieff, K. O'Sullivan Goals: K. O'Sullivan The girls had a great game and they all did really well to last the whole game with no break as we only had 11 players. We had most of the play in our half for most of the game so the score doesn’t really reflect the brilliant effort given by all the girls. It was fantastic to watch the 2nd half where the girls started to pass out wider to the wings rather than just passing down the centre like in previous weeks. Well done girls you all played well as a team rather than a bunch of individuals.
