Next Meeting, Alex Powers, Power Point September 14, 2011

7 - 9 pm, Lovers Lane United Methodist Church

Not having the usual workshop demo by the artist puts the pressure on the SWS board to come up with a team approach to the meeting. It is traditionally the “Passing the Torch” from one president to the next. And this year some-waslike years past but there was the introduc-tion of the “Garage Sale” approach to mem-bers cleaning out their unused books, brushes and other stuff. There was also an auction for two of Anita Meynig’s paintings and one of a Don Andrews. Outgoing President, Pattie

Bowler received a bag full of painting essentials. New president, Jeff Good showed how to pack lite with his minimal plein air setup. Painting of the Month for May, 2011

Ratrinda Das shows how to simplify a busy photo...

Ratindra Das, Painting a Personal Reality in Watercolor, is a Dolphin Fellow and a sig-nature member of both the American Watercolor Society and National Watercolor Society. Ratindra will share a few examples of how he approaches reference photos.

A photograph on a clear day may look something like Image A. There is too much go-ing on to create a strong painting. However, if I outline the shapes, you'll notice that despite being a bit busy, the photograph has a nice design. Here (image C) I’ve blocked in the lights and darks according to the photograph. It’s better but lacks strength. If lights and darks don't help, I next turn to simplification.

The Wichita Wildlife Reserve Paint out was a big SUCCESS!!! Article by: Gaylord O’Con, SWS Paint Out Chairman Plein Air SWS artists gathered in the Wichita Wildlife Reserve in Oklahoma on May 13th and 14th for a day and a half of painting on location. The weather was beau-tiful, a little breezy Saturday morning, but overall we had a great paint out event. There were 22 paintings produced with subjects ranging from waterfalls, lake scenes, Medi-cine Park buildings, buffalo, birds, spillways, mountains, trails, fire trucks, geese, trees, and Rock formations. The quality of work produced was awesome. Leslie Richardson’s mountain scene was very well done. Pricilla’s waterfall was one on the best paintings ever. Jo William’s water scenes were absolutely awesome. I loved Gail Delger’s antique fire truck from Medicine Park. Irish Ann Moore’s landscape composition and colors were outstanding. The awards and gifts went to: 1st Place + gift / Gail Delger / Medicine Park Fire Truck 2nd Place + gift / Gaylord O’Con / Range Buffalo

3rd Place + gift / Irish Ann Moore / Landscape 4th Place / Pricilla Krejic / Medicine Park Building 5th Place / Leslie Richardson / Mountain Scene French Artist Madam FeFe made a special appearance at the Saturday evening reception with special birthday gifts and some important life philoso-phy. Thank you FeFe for the big surprise, it was wonderful and made the paint out perfect. Plans will start soon for the fall 2011 SWS paint out. Let me or one of the SWS officers know if you have any sugges-tions for fall paint out locations. All sugges-tions will be considered. The fellowship on these paint outs is priceless.

while Image E shows lights and darks are modified and simplified for the sake of design. Notice also how I've begun adjusting how much water I want to show on the right side of the design. As the artist, I can do that! (And so can you!) The sketch now reflects a full control of the design.

Image G is a more abstracted design. The degree of abstraction is up to the artist. This sketch retains a little resemblance to the photograph, but it is getting away from what we call “realism.” Now take a look at the final painting (Image H.) You could look at this and still see the reference photo even if it is a bit different. However, look at Image I and Image J and see just how far I can push the abstrac-tion. This is what makes art fun!
