BATHFORD Cricket Club

The new season is upon us at last … and we've only had one cancellation, due to the weather, so far!

The 2nd XI were first to play, meeting Beanacre 2nd XI in Melksham, in Division 6 of the Wiltshire League, on 26 April and coming away with a comfortable victory. Bathford batted first and made good progress, both from the start and throughout the allotted 45 overs. Opening batsman Darren Sutton made 42, and other useful contributions came from Paul Merrett (25), Peter Coombs (20) and Tom Vaughan, one of our promising juniors, who made 19 not out. The total of 181 for 8 was very competitive for a spring day with a damp wicket. Beanacre 2 were never in the hunt and finished well short on 101 for 6. The only disappointment of the day was an injury to veteran wicket keeper Michael Noel, though the latest news is that he might be back in action by 17 May … with any luck. The next match on 10 May is at home against Biddestone 4, who always give us a tough game and will test our early season form to the full.

The 1st XI were next to play, meeting Beanacre 1st XI at home on 3 May. What a calamity! Put in to bat, our team could only muster 28 runs, all out! The Beanacre opening bowlers had a field day, taking all 10 wickets between them and their batsmen had no difficulty is reaching 31 for 1. Perhaps it is best to dwell no more on this game, in the hope that the forthcoming trip to Wilcot CC on 10 May will bring a change in fortune.

Unfortunately, the under 13s, who should have played both Frome A and Frome B by now, have yet to experience the heat of battle. The first game lost to the

weather, the second cancelled because the opposition could not raise a team. The next game is at home on Tuesday evening (13 May). Third time lucky, we hope!

Bathford Brownies compete in regional competitionSince January the Brownies have been working hard to make puppets, a puppet theatre and scenery - all from recycled materials. They used wooden spoons, old curtains and cardboard boxes plus much, much more.

All their hard work came together in early May when they performed their play, called "The Brownie Story", for parents and friends. Seven Brownies then travelled to Keynsham to compete against other Brownies from across the North Somerset region in a scrapheap challenge style competition.

They received great comments from the judges. All of this hard work resulted in twenty Bathford Brownies being awarded their 'Toymaker' badge. Well done!

Dear Friends,

I want to tell you one of my favourite true stories; it concerns a school inspection - not in Bathford but in India of a school for poor and orphaned children run by a Christian Charity.

When the inspection was announced the governors, Head, teachers and children all prepared very carefully for the two crucial days; nothing was left to chance, they had a reputation to keep up.

The Inspectors duly arrived on a lovely sunny day. As they entered they were greeted by a small boy with an infectious smile sitting on a wall welcoming them. They were touched but thought no more about it at the time.

The inspection went very well - even the Inspectors seemed very pleased. They had observed all the classes being taught, interviewed all the teachers and discussed future plans for the school with the Head and Governors. On the final afternoon they all met for a wash - up and preliminary report. Just before the discussion ended, the Chief Inspector had a sudden last question; there was just one thing he could not understand and it concerned the small boy on the wall. It did not seem appropriate that he was there. The Head smiled and much to the Inspectors amazement advised that the little boy was the most important pupil in the school. "You see", he said, "although he is severely handicapped, including deaf and dumb, he is the 'Welcomer' who greets the children as they arrive, often

sad and anxious. His smile and wave is infectious and makes us all happy". The chief inspector commended the little boy in his report.

What is so moving and true about the story is that it reminds us that we can easily fail to recognise the value of another person because we are looking with a limited perspective. Many in our community might be overlooked, but God knows them - and of course, so do their families (for example those caring for a sick or elderly relative).

We have recently been celebrating the Ascension when Jesus returned to Heaven and the Coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost to empower the disciples to carry on the work of the Gospel. On that first day some three thousand were baptised, the very beginning of the Church worldwide.

Those first disciples were just very ordinary men, not among the "great and good" but God knew what he was doing when he called them.

Security Alert - Do you have a cat flap? Have you ever thought that a thief could use it to get access to your home? It appears that a thief broke into a home in the parish by reaching in through the cat flap to open a door from the inside taking valuables and car keys.

The parish council recommends that residents do not to leave keys or bags within easy reach of a cat flap or letter box. Move them some distance away and conceal items such as keys as thieves may also use long handled hooks to grab items left lying within sight of the cat flap or letter box.

Code of ConductCode of Conduct - the responsibility for considering complaints that a council member may have breached the Code of Conduct is moving to B&NES' Standards Committee. Anyone wanting to complain about the conduct of a member of Bathford Parish Council or B&NES Council must submit their complaint to the Standards Committee instead of the Standards Board for England. The address for submitting complaints is "c/o The Monitoring Officer, 3rd Floor, Riverside, Keynsham, BS31 1LA. Further information about the new local assessment system is available on the Standards Board's website

Payphone under threatClose on the heels of the Post Office closure we now have the Payphone being earmarked for closure. Whilst we have to agree that it isn't heavily used, it is important. It is used most days Also it is the nearest phone to the Sports field, so in the case of an accident it could be the only way to make a 999 call.

Farleigh Rise, Monkton Farleigh and Limpley Stoke are also earmarked for closure, This would mean that there will be no Payphones in the wider area. These are all part of BT's scheme to close 14000 Payphones over the country BT have said that they will not remove any Payphone without the agreement of the local Council, so hopefully we can get a reprieve.

Whitehaven"Whitehaven is being acquired by Andrew Macpherson of CKD Kennedy Macpherson on behalf of clients.

"Since the sale will not be completed until the end of October, Whitehaven Trust will continue to occupy and use the Whitehaven site until then.

The Bulletin has spoken with Andrew Macpherson and as soon as any plans have been formalized they will be made available, but he did say that at this time it is planned to return Whitehaven to Housing.

This gives more space on the events diary page for one-off events.

It is envisaged that the list will be published at regular intervals throughout the year.

Veterans WeekendThe Rev Rob Thomas, who is the curator at Bathampton Church has contacted me in respect of having a Veteran’s Service in Bathampton Church on the 21st June.

This will tie in with our planned veterans weekend (20th - 22nd June), where we will have a fancy dress disco on the Friday entitled “Bathford Militia” (a chance for any ex-service personnel to brush the cobwebs off their old uniforms). On Saturday 21st June we will have the service at Bathampton Church at 11:00am and then back to the Bathford RBL for a spot of mess style lunch. On Sunday 22nd the Somer Group will be laying up the special Thresher’s Standard (donated by Thresher’s Bakery), with the usual Sunday Service at St Swithuns Church.

So if you are a veteran of any previous conflict or know anyone in Bathford, Batheaston or Bathampton that is then please let them know! I believe that this will be a wonderful opportunity to promote friendship across the three villages and honour our veterans. I will let you know of all the finer points when I have them.

Twinning News.Artannes VisitA party of 22 persons from Bathford and Kingsdown visited Artannes from 8 - 12 May for a regular exchange visit.

As usual they were received with characteristic Artannais hospitality and took part in a busy programme of visits

and meetings. These included two well known Loire Châteaux, Chaumont and Langeais, and also a wine museum at Bourgueil.

Before departure, an album of photographs recording the two twinning ceremonies in 2005 and 2006 was presented to the people of Artannes.

Those who went to Artannes in 2006 will be glad to know that the roses which we then presented are flourishing well in a bed outside the Mairie in the main square.

Youth VisitThe Artannes visit provided an opportunity to discuss the programme for the forthcoming visit of young people to Bathford from 5 -11July. Planning for this visit is now well in hand and it promises to be a most interesting occasion.

The Future of Bathford Village ShopWhat happens if the Post Office closes?

BEFA (Bathford Enterprise for All) is a co-operative run for the benefit of everybody in the community.

It is important that we know your views, your concerns, and your aspirations for the future

CONCERNS ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE SHOP & POST OFFICE - RECORD TURNOUT FOR BEFA AGMThe Bathford Enterprise for All Committee was thrilled to see such a good turnout at the Annual General Meeting in May. A total of 81 members took part and made some major decisions on the future of Bathford’s community shop.

The main item for discussion was the proposed closure of the Post Office and the effects that may have on business. In the absence of news after the consultation period, the situation is still unclear. However, the meeting voted unanimously that if the Post Office is closed, in principle BEFA should consider extending into the Post Office area and taking on the news agency, provided feasibility studies prove positive. There is a public meeting planned for Friday 13 June to consult further with the community on this vital issue (7.45pm, Parish Hall).

The committee is pleased to welcome two new members; Peter McCowen and Brenda Field, who were voted on in addition to the existing team. Since the meeting, Diana Smith decided to step down and Jeanette Kremer has been co-opted to fill the vacancy.

The Treasurer reported that the shop continues to perform well financially and is in profit. However donations and grants are essential and still form part of the income. The aim is to be fully self-sufficient within the next year.

The next few months present many uncertainties for Bathford Village Shop, but also potentially some extremely exciting opportunities. With the support of members, customers and the community at large, we are hoping to come through bigger, stronger and more vibrant than ever, both as a business and as a vital resource for Bathford.

As ever, we are hugely indebted to the shop managers and all our wonderful volunteers for all their hard work.

There will be a need for more help and new skills in the immediate future and a new leaflet about volunteering has been produced. This includes everything from sign writing and making notices to DIY, doing occasional deliveries or collections, co-ordinating our monthly work parties, helping with housekeeping and of course serving. Pick up a copy in the shop.
