Gliddenites Host "Blue Ribbon Memorial For Kadyn Sporrer Last week in the Graphic you may have read about the 6 year old boy Kadyn Sporrer who lost his life at the Glidden Aquatic Center. A lot of events have been taking place around the area to help Kadyn's family as well as help people heal at the same time. And members of the Glidden community got together to do a special Blue Rib- bon Memorial for Kadyn that was held at the Glidden Aquatic Cen- ter Park this past Friday as a trib- ute and fundraiser for the family. The idea came from Ashley Boggs who owns Bella Vita Sa- lon in Glidden, and Kayla-Lynn Weisz, the owner of "Don't Blink Photography". Kayla told us: "What started as just a thought and a few teary eyed conver- sations between Ashley and I turned into an entire community coming together in support and love. Resulting in the upside of $5k for the Sporrer Family! (Do- nations still coming in) None of it being possible with out each and every one who made a contribu- tion... 100% of the baked goods were donated, too many people to name!! Jammy Thornack with Iconic Screen printing who has been so unbelievably generous and has worked tirelessly on the T-shirts that Nate Brant designed. Tammie and Kelsey with T&K creations put in alot of time and energy helping to plan organize and rally the community. We are so grateful to them. This truly was a community effort that per- sonally makes me so proud to be a part of. We are planning to meet with the Sporrer family in the next few days to deliver the ribbons and donations." Ashley Boggs added: " I feel the Blue Ribbon Memorial for Kadyn was exactly what the community needed. Tossing around a few ideas with Kayla and Nate Brant we decided it would be the best way to honor this sweet boy and his family. I thought this would be the best way to bring the com- munity together, so we could lean on each other. In a town of our size, we felt the tidal wave of emotion sweep through us and needed to come together. We nev- er would have imagined the turn- out we had, with only two days of planning. It has filled my heart seeing everyone come together in this hard time. I can only hope our donations can help the fami- ly escape for a while or help out with any needs they are presented with the next few months. I knew my heart belonged to this lit- tle community, as soon I moved here. But its things like this that solidify our decision in raising our children here." Nate Brant was also instrumen- tal in helping Ashley and Kayla put the Blue Ribbon Memorial in motion. Brant is a lifeguard at the Glidden Aquatic Center. Picture: Pictured above is Ashley Boggs (Front) and Kayla Weisz creators of the blue ribbon me- morial looking at messages that attendees wrote to Kadyn and to Kadyn's family on their ribbons. There were thousands of ribbons put on the fence at the Glidden Aquatic Center that day... Special Plaque Dedicated to Merle Hay A special plaque and dedication was given acknowledging Mer- le Hay who was one of the first three soldiers to perish in WWI from the 1st Infantry Divi- sion. The 1st Infantry Division which is celebrating its 102nd birthday this year and which was the first unit of the United States Army, and the first divi- sion to go to combat that dates back to the civil war times. The 1st Division, known as the "Big Red One" came to Glid- den and paid tribute to Merle Hay in a special ceremony this past Friday. In-climate weather kept attendees from going out to the Merle Hay Cemetery and the ceremony was hosted at the Glidden American Legion Post #386 headquarters in Glidden. Pictured right is Bill Derrig, also a member of the 1st Infan- try Division who came up with the idea for the plaque at the cemetery from the 1st Infantry Division. He's shown saluting during the playing of "Taps" for Merle Hay. Pictured in be- tween Derrig and the flag sits a picture of Merle Hay. There were many 1st Infantry members at the event, along with some Carroll County elected officials. Derrig read an eloquent reading about Mer- le Hay, and followed it up with a special French poem that he recited in French. Derrig who is from the Web- ster city area, and a decorated Army Veteran recently joined the Glidden American Legion Post #386 due to the fact that our post is very active. It was a wonderful ceremony, and if you'd like to see the new plaque, it is located next to the Merley Hay monument out at the Merle Hay Cemetery.
