Vatican'snumbertwo slams 'attempt tosplitChurch'VATICAN CITY (AFP) - TheVatican's number two, the re-ported target of a power strug-gle in the Church, allegeddivisive forces at work onMonday.

In a rare outburst, the Sec-retary of State appeared to lashout at those who, according toreligious observers, have beenorchestrating the scandal in anattempt to oust him, andslammed media for "DanBrown-style" reporting.

Tarcisio Bertone told theFamiglia Cristiana magazinethat there was "a fierce and re-lentless attempt to create divi-sions between the Holy Fatherand his collaborators, and be-tween the collaborators them-selves."

However, the cardinal in-sisted he enjoyed support frommany quarters within theChurch: "I am at the heart ofthe fray. And I see painfulthings but I also see the Churchby my side, people from everybackground who show affec-tion."

Religious watchers havesaid it is unlikely that PopeBenedict XVI's butler PaoloGabriele -- arrested on May 23on accusations of leaking se-cret papal papers -- would haveorchestrated such a large whis-tle-blowing operation alone.

Bertone said the pope hadfelt betrayed and "has askedhimself several times, whyGabriele, who he loved like ason, should have behaved thatway."

Vatican spokesman Fed-erico Lombardi told a pressconference Monday that thethree retired cardinals ap-pointed by the pope to head aninvestigative commission onthe leaks scandal had alreadyinterviewed 23 people.

Although there were fewsigns at the Moscow meetingof Iran's willingness to give into western demands to scaledown its program, Obamaand Putin said they "look for-ward to constructive engage-ment with Iran through theP5+1 process."

Obama, who has warnedhe will not rule out militaryaction against Iran's nuclearsights said that there was "stilltime and space" for diplo-macy to work.

The court's last most obvi-ous foray into politics was in2000, when it declared GeorgeW. Bush the winner of thepresidential elections over AlGore.

"If the Supreme Court jus-tices follow the constitutiontext and history and many oftheir own opinions on federalpower, they would easily up-hold the Affordable Care Act,"said lawyer Elizabeth Wydra, who is more in favor of the ad-ministration.

"There are a number of pre-vious decisions particularlyabout the Commerce Clausethat the court would be ignor-ing if they strike down theact," she said.

But she said despite thatsome justices like the conser-vative Antonin Scalia could go"against some of their ownwords on the legal issue athand."

But a former Bush adminis-tration lawyer David Rivkindenied the ruling would bebased on the judges' own po-litical preferences.

"It's political only because itbenefits political parties,(that's) the only way we cansay it's political," he argued.

"The criticism that it will bepolitical is (itself) a politicalcriticism," suggested RandyBarnett, in favor of the plain-tiffs. "What is at stake iswhether our federal govern-ment has limited powers."

Marcus also did not believethe Supreme Court will baseits decision on partisan poli-tics, but rather more on ideol-ogy. Five conservative judgeson the court "fear big govern-ment swallowing up and sup-planting the traditional role ofthe states," he said.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - Withthe US Supreme Court set torule within days on the consti-tutionality of President BarackObama's health care reformsmany Americans are fearful ofthe political fallout of the de-cision.

While the nation's nine topjustices are meant to base theirdecisions on the frameworkprovided by the centuries-oldUS Constitution, many believethe divided bench could beswayed by their own politicalleanings.

"What they're afraid of isthat the subjective impulse ofthe judge, rather than some-thing more objective, will con-trol the decision," JusticeStephen Breyer told AFP.

The high court is expectedto render its decision on thecenterpiece of Obama's politi-cal legacy by the end of Juneas the nation gears up the No-vember elections.

The Democratic president isfighting to win a second WhiteHouse term as his Republicanchallenger Mitt Romney, whohas vowed to repeal the healthcare reforms, erodes the gap inthe polls amid the sour econ-omy.

The court will decide if thecore of the law, which obligesall Americans to purchasehealth care insurance or facepenalties, is constitutional, andif not, whether the rest ofObama's reforms hold up.

Since oral arguments wereheard in March, experts havebeen trying to read the tea-leaves to offer up predictionson which way the court willlean.

Many were surprised by thereactions of the conservativejudges, the largest bloc on thebench, who seemed inclined tooverturn the law, which aimsto provide health insurance to32 million Americans.

Overturning the law woulddeal a blow to Obama -- atrained constitutional lawyer -- and offer a golden opportu-nity for Republicans tohammer him on his credibilityand leadership qualities ahead

The lawsuit was filed in2011 by a group led by a Wash-ington state Internet usernamed Angel Fraley. The suitalleged that Facebook users, including minors, had theirnames and likenesses used inads without their permission.

The suit contended Face-book improperly used advertis-ing when a member indicatedhe or she "liked" a particularcompany.

The "like" was passed on to

the friends of those membersas an implied endorsement of acompany or product. In somecases, the profile or picture wasused in the "sponsored stories"that the suit said was a form ofadvertising.

A mediator assigned to thecase said the agreement in-cluded the "substantial sum" of$10 million "to be distributedto groups whose charters setout actions and programs rele-vant to advocacy related to thepurposes for which the casewas brought."

A settlement in the case wasunveiled earlier this month butterms were not disclosed.

The company, whichlaunched a massive public of-fering last month, is undergrowing scrutiny for its privacypolicies. It is also under pres-sure from investors to findways to monetize its social net-work with more than 900 mil-lion members.

LOS Cabos (AFP) - Leaders ofemerging economies said yes-terday that they wanted theIMF to put in place reforms toincrease their influence beforethey step up contributions to afund to prevent future crises.

Leaders of the so-calledBRICS -- Brazil, China, Rus-sia, India and South Africa --said in a statement at a summitin Mexico that they were will-ing to step up their contribu-tions to the IMF but only onceexisting funds dry up.

The International MonetaryFund, hoping to prevent aworsening of the global eco-nomic crisis, called last yearfor $500 billion in an emer-gency firewall to support na-tions at risk of contagion, butthe money has fallen short.

The five BRICS leaders"agreed to increase resourcesavailable with the InternationalMonetary Fund. In this con-text, they agreed to enhancetheir own contributions to theIMF," said a statement releasedby India.

But the statement did notinclude numbers and theBRICS said that they expectedtheir money to be used aftercurrent resources "are substan-tially utilized."

"This would promote ade-quate burden sharing amongstIMF creditors. These new con-tributions are being made inanticipation that all the reformsagreed upon in 2010 will befully implemented in a timelymanner, including a compre-hensive reform of votingpower and reform of quotashares," it said.

McCartney is often mistak-enly described as "the last re-maining Beatle" -- somethingthat the oft-overlooked drum-mer Ringo Starr, who is alsostill recording, bears withgood-natured amusement.

"We are good friends,"Starr has said. "We're the onlytwo who've experienced allthis who are still here."
