Reminders about exams:1. The day before the exam period is a regular school

day. Teachers will go over important information about his/her exam at this time. Staying home for extra study time is not a productive use of anyone’s time.

2. At the conclusion of each exam, students are free to go home in order to prepare for the next day's examination once they have finished writing. Please make arrangements to pick up your son/daughter if they have no exams in the afternoon of that day.

3. Busses will run on normal schedules. Teachers are available for extra help during the exam period. Students should make their own arrangements with staff to meet at a mutually convenient time.

4. Exams missed because of illness: - All students who have a valid medical reason for

missing one or more exams are asked to supply documentation from a doctor.

- Students who supply medical proof as a reason for absence will be allowed to write make up exams at a later date. The date of the exam is to be determined by the student involved and the subject teacher.

- Where medical reasons make it impossible to write an exam, the final mark will be derived by the course teacher on the basis of the previous marks in the course. This mark will be discussed with the administration before becoming final, and recorded by the deadline for reporting marks.

Grade 5-6 Field Trip to Winnipeg On Thursday, June 7th, Grades 5 and 6 headed to Winnipeg for a fun-filled day. When we arrived at 11:30 a.m., we went to the Farm and Food Discovery Centre to learn where our food comes from and how it gets to us. While we were there, we saw lots of piglets and a sow in labour. From the Farm and Food Discovery Centre we went to the Forks for lunch and some shopping. We stayed at the Forks for about an hour and a half, then left to go to the IMAX Theatre. At the IMAX, we saw a movie, ‘Tornado Alley’, in 3D. After our movie was over, we headed home and arrived around 8:30 p.m. We had a great day of fun and learning!

Carnival Day a Success On Wednesday, June 6th, the Kindergarten to Grade Six classes were treated to an old fashioned carnival! Students were able to participate in activities such as balloon darts and an obstacle course, bouncy house, sack races, ring toss and of course, a dunk tank! There was even a snack station, where students were

treated to popcorn and drink boxes while they got tattoos and face painting. The carnival was planned by the Grade 9 and 10 Lifeworks classes. In planning the carnival, they worked on many skills that will help prepare them for the world of work such as communication, preparedness, responsibility and adaptability.

It was a beautiful day for the event, with lots of sun! The students had a great time, both big and small! It was so nice to see all the smiling faces and hear the laughter in the playground. Thank you to everybody for all their support and to the grade nines and tens for an amazing day!

Shakespeare in the Green Room? It might not have been Shakespeare in the Ruins, or Shakespeare in the Park, but it was nonetheless an amazing venture! The Grade 8 audience said the Grade 10 performance of "Romeo and Juliet" was powerful . . . odd . . . different . . . enjoyable . . . and super-funny. Miss Abbott said it was wonderful and they impressed her socks off! The Grade 10 ELA class was broken into five groups; each group was responsible for summarizing an Act of "Romeo and Juliet", using contemporary language. The students showed that they have a firm grasp of the play, demonstrated a lot of creativity in costuming and staging, and in general, did an amazing job!

The audience of Grade 8s and 9s voted for "Oscars" in several categories, and the winners were as follows: • Best Ensemble - Act III (Jalynn, Donovan, Lauresa, Cassie, Caleb) • Best Actor - Donovan • Best Supporting Actor - Kirsten • Best Costume - Jordan • Best Screenplay - Act V (Alex, Troy, Morgan, Kyle, Kaylin) Next year: "Macbeth" - start looking for all things plaid!

Grade Two News The Grade twos went to Spruce Woods on Friday, June 8 for their class trip. We had so much fun playing at the park, eating our lunch in the great big fort, and riding in a horse pulled wagon. Oh yes, and we also played in the amazing sand dunes and even buried Mrs. Cory. Canada sure has some awesome places to visit. Our Flat Stanleys are almost all back. Stanley has been to places like Calgary, Thunder Bay, and Vancouver. We have posters up in the hallway, so if you are in the school, come and take a peek.

High School Track and Field   On May 31st, the Southwest School Division had their track meet on a beautiful sunny Thursday. We had 13 students competing in numerous events. I am very proud to say our students performed to their very best ability. Our team finished 5th with a 105 points. We had two senior girls this year, Kelsey Miller and Elise Badiou. Elise brought home two first place ribbons in the 3000 m and the 1500 m. Kelsey also brought home a first place ribbon in shot put. We also had two senior boys, Dan Elson and Chris Lubkey. Chris placed 3rd in the 400 m. and although they didn’t place in other events, they did a great job. We had four junior girls competing this year. Jalynn Cullen, Jacqueline Dolomont, Flynn McFall and Chelsea Downey all participated in the medley and proudly came home with a 2nd place ribbon. Chelsea also earned a 2nd place in 800m and a 3rd in the 1500m. Our junior boys included Derek Cullen, Graeme Hore, Murray McBain, Josh Diaz and Kyle Moore. Graeme brought home a first place ribbon in triple jump and a 3rd place ribbon in javelin. Josh also earned a 3rd place ribbon in 3000m and 1500m. All in all, our students did a great job representing Wawanesa School. They all tried their very best, which contributed to a great day at this years track meet.

Provincial Track and Field Congratulations to Graeme Hore who participated in the Triple Jump event at the Provincials in Selkirk last weekend. Graeme placed 20th for the province. Good job Graeme!

Grade 10 Field Trip On June 4th the Grade 10 class went to Lake William for our year-end field trip. When we got there we set up our tents and either made food, went fishing or swimming (supervised by our lifeguard Elise!). Our camp site had a couple paths straight down to the lake and it was a two minute walk to get to the beach. Most people brought simple things for supper like hotdogs or alphagetti, but the boys decided to upstage everyone by making steak and fried potatoes! After that everyone wanted to do some more fishing. For a couple people it was the first time they had ever caught a fish, which was pretty exciting! We had a couple fires going where we cooked marshmallows and made s'mores, and then we had to go to sleep. We were kept awake by the sound of an angry bull nearby, and it kept growling and yelling until the next morning. When everyone woke up we made food and then split into two groups to go canoeing or hiking. Canoeing and kayaking seemed simple but the wind had picked up so it made everything a lot harder. The hike took at least an hour with steep hills and lots of ticks but at least the view was great. After about two hours the groups switched, and the second group to go hiking ran into some problems with some people switching signs around and not everyone made it to the top. Then we all got to go back and eat and then pack up. It was an awesome camping trip and maybe next year everyone will remember to put on some sunscreen!

News From the Wawanesa Observatory June 5 marked the date of a significant astronomical event when we were able to see Venus crossing the face of the Sun as the orbit of Venus took the planet between Earth and the Sun. While the event itself is not an overwhelming spectacle, it does hold an important place in astronomy history. Measurements taken during previous Venus transits gave us our first opportunity to calculate the distance from the Earth to the Sun and enabled us to give scale to our Solar System. This event happens twice every 100 or so years and will not be observed again until December of 2117 (mark your calendars now!). Without proper viewing equipment, it is not possible to observe the transit, so there is no record of anyone seeing a Venus transit until 1639. That makes this year’s transit only the 7th time in history that it has been observed. This year’s transit also gave us a chance to put our new Wawanesa Observatory telescope to work. Approximately 35 people stopped in for a look on the evening of June 5, and despite some pesky cloud cover, we did manage to get a good look at the transit as recorded in the following image captured from our telescope. Note that the original image is available in our on line newsletter where you will find the image quality significantly better. Check it out at http://wawanesaschoolshmb.wordpress.com. Note as well that we are hop ing to h a v e t h e t e l e s c o p e o p e n f o r e v e n i n g v i e w i n g s s e v e r a l times during the summer. Keep your eyes open f o r d a t e s and times!

Dress Code The staff at Wawanesa School follow dress guidelines that are commonly referred to as business casual. The dress code for students is an extension of this standard. It is difficult in a K-12 school to determine at what age these standards should be applied and not single out an individual student. As such, we apply this standard to all grade levels. Students must be aware of and comply with the school dress code. As in any workplace, common sense and consideration for those around you are essential.

What Is Allowed• tank tops that have at least a 1" shoulder strap• shorts that that reach at least mid-thigh

What Is Not Allowed• no spaghetti strap tops• no bare midriffs• no tops that expose cleavage• no excessive make-up• no hats or hoods covering the head• no racerback tops• bare feetStudents who do not meet the dress code will be asked to cover up or may be sent home for appropriate clothes.

Western Manitoba Youth Choir Congratulations are extended to Asia Oleson, Matthew Lahner and Cameron Lucier who successfully auditioned for next fall’s Western Manitoba Youth Choir. They will be attending two weekend rehearsal camps and then touring communities throughout western Manitoba.
