RENO, Nev - Using experience
gained from winning the 2010
NCAA National Championship at
Fairleigh Dickinson University, the
members of Time of Our Life II of
Saddle Brook, N.J., confidently
rolled into the National Bowling
Stadium in Reno, Nev., and found
similar success at the United States
Bowling Congress Women's
Championships.
Lisa Friscioni's 727 series helped
the group to games of 1,097, 1,101
and 1,084 for a 3,282 total, which
landed Time of Our Life II in the top
spot in Scratch Team. They received
an additional 30 pins of handicap per
game to also reach the Diamond
Team lead with 3,372. Purple
Brusers of El Paso, Texas, previous-
ly held the top spot in Scratch Team
with 3,026, while Pindemonium of
Elgin, Ill., had the Diamond Team lead with 3,368.
Friscioni was joined by Sara Litteral (679), Joely Carrillo
(653), Erica Perez (620) and Jennifer Viens (603). Friscioni
is a member of the 2006 NCAA National Championship
team and served as an assistant coach during the 2010 title
run that featured Litteral, Carrillo and Perez as competitors.
"Collegiate bowling definitely helps in this atmosphere,"
said Friscioni, who made her sixth USBC Women's
Championships appearance. "It gave us an advantage
because we've done this for four years, 10 months out of the
year. Communication is key. Whenever someone has an
idea, we all hear it out and go from there. We like to talk
about what's going on. That's what we learned in college
and what we do every time we're out on the lanes."

RENO, Nev. - Like thousands of
bowlers before her at the United States
Bowling Congress Women's
Championships, Dorothy Taylor of
Neptune, N.J., laced up her shoes and
took to the lanes for her first tourna-
ment appearance at the National
Bowling Stadium this year. She sepa-
rated herself from the
group by making her
inaugural march
down Center Aisle at
81 years old.
Although she's
been active in the
sport for nearly 50
years and has
bowled in countless
city and state tourna-
ments, Taylor had
reservations about
competing at the
USBC Women's Championships
throughout the years. After a little
coaxing from her daughter, Margaret
Taylor, she took her first turn on the
tournament lanes Last week.
"My daughter got me to bowl," said
Taylor, who bowls regularly at
Neptune's Shore Lanes. "I had wanted
to go before, but thought I wasn't good
enough. I did other tournaments and
was just comfortable staying close to
home. I really enjoyed this. Everyone
was so nice, and it was fun."
Even though the 2012 event
marked her tournament debut, Taylor
is no stranger to the championships
atmosphere. She has traveled with her
family to both the USBC Open and
Women's Championships and
enjoyed the chance to experience
some of the tournament traditions she
had only seen in the past.
"Walking down Center Aisle was
great," Taylor said. "I used to watch
my late husband when he bowled, and
I couldn't wait to get a picture of him
walking down, and now I've done it.
When I watched, I was always waiting
for my turn. Here, I actually had my
turn, and I did it. I never thought I
would. I've come a long way, and I'm
thankful for the
opportunity."
Taylor admitted
to being a little
scared before she
started, but the
encouragement
from her fellow
bowlers, and being
on the lanes beside
her daughter, made
the nerves easily
disappear. With her
first Women's
Championships under her belt, she's
ready and willing to start a new tradi-
tion and hopes others will do the same.
"This was a really big experience
for me, and to tell you the truth, I was
scared," she said. "I had bad dreams
about coming up here with all of these
people bowling. But I was able to get
myself comfortable. Everyone com-
plimented me and told me to keep up
the good work. Today was about me
and my daughter, and we were just
going to have fun. If I can make it
another year, and they want to put up
with me, I'll come back again. I would
really try to encourage everybody to
give this a try."
Taylor finished off her first
Women's Championships appearance
with a 453 series in team, 430 in dou-
bles and 422 in singles for a 1,305 all-
events total in the Sapphire Division.
All scores include handicap.

Rob Gilbert, Jr. 723 Leads Youth TravelersBy Vince Albrecht
BOONTON, NJ - A return to
Boonton was the impetus for the
sudden rash of high rollers among
the Stan Niemiec youth travelers.
With their backs against the wall,
Bowler City I engineered a three-
game sweep of league-leading
Holiday to stave off elimination
and remain three points back with
two sessions left. Taking advantage
of pin-friendly conditions, Rob
Gilbert, Jr. and John Draney merci-
lessly pounded the plastics, pro-
ducing the afternoon’s best scores
with triple-deuce sets of 732 and
695 respectively; Eric Grabusnik
added 227 and Matt Trento a 219
for the victors whose 900-2560
scratch was their season high.
Holiday ignited some firepower
themselves as anchor Kevin
Macchia posted a three-deuce 634;
Dillon Cilento 233, 222 and Ryan
Kattine 202,201.
For the second straight week,
Boonton was involved in a nail-
biter set and again emerged a win-
ner, 2787-2779 over Fair Lawn.
As was the case all afternoon,
high scores’ resurgence prevailed,
led by Boonton’s Patrick Teshima
with a triple deuce 680; Rose
Feiwel unveiled her finest outing, a
scratch 166-476 which left her with
732 gross, the day’s second high
handicap set; Karl Kattermann
closed out Boonton’s impressive
output with 224,215. Fair Lawn’s
Justin Floyd pounded out 252-655,
Jaylin Floyd 237-623, Stephen
Plaszky 223 and Hunter Perry 180.
In another close match, Bowler
City II came from behind to
squeeze past Bowler City III, 2652-
2627. James Kane led the way for
the victors with 235-663, Haley
Hassan 188 and Kyle Schellberg
187. Pacing BC III was Patrick
Sucero who continued his torrid
stretch with 217-572. Rounding out
the action, Montvale snapped an
eleven-game losing skein by sal-
vaging the finale against Bowler
City IV, 859-822 as 11-year-old
Matt Russell struck gold with a
stunning 209 and Shannon Rossi
tacked on a 177. BC IV’s best came
from Arielle Wallace whose 153
was +35 over average.
The Stan Niemiec youthful
keglers put on quite a show: in
addition to Gilbert’s 732, the
league’s third best threesome, there
were six “600” sets to go along
with thirty “200”s, eighteen of
which produced a season high six
triple-deuce series; they were:
Gilbert 258, 256, 218; Draney 213,
248, 234; Tushima 224, 241, 215;
Kane 204, 235, 224; Justin Floyd
252, 201, 202 and Macchia 214,
215, 205.

muscle the ball,” said Filarecki,
who has come back from a rup-
tured disk in her lower back that
kept her out of action for the last
half of the 2010-11 season. “On
the lane condition out there, I
knew that if I got fast, the ball
was going nowhere.”
In match play (two games, total
pins), she defeated Jodi Musto of
Schenectady, 421-317, and
Dianna Molenko of Bellmore,
359-354, to earn the No. 1 seed
for the four-bowler stepladder
finals. O’Donnell defeated
Jenean Bailey of Albany, 232-
146, and Robin Fredenburgh of
Burnt Hills, 181-180, before fac-
ing Filarecki for the title.
Filarecki credited her boyfriend,
Rich, and parents, Dave and
Lynda, for their support and the
late Kerm Helmer, longtime coach
at Erie CC, for her success. She is
employed as a licensed optician
for Eye Care Professionals of
Western New York.
O’Donnell won $600 for plac-
ing second while Fredenburgh
earned $400 and Bailey $300.
Oakes Makes Up for Lost TimeOakes started bowling at the
age of 40, but has come a long
way over the past dozen years –
raising her league average to 190
and competing in local, state and
national tournaments.
She said that capturing a
Queens crown is “unbelievable.”
“I don't think it hit me until the
next day when I started getting
phone calls from family and
friends,” she said. “I called my
Mom Saturday night as I was
leaving to head home to let her
know how I did and apparently
she starting making calls to
everyone in my family at 9:30 at
night! Then I go to my local
Dunkin Donuts Sunday morning
and my Dad had told all the
workers So, I was being congrat-
ulated from everyone there.
Someone posted it on Face Book
and more calls and messages
came in. That's when it really hit
me!”
She qualified in the eighth (and
final) position in the Classified
Division, which had 40 entrants.
From there, she defeated high
qualifier Katie Dains of
Blaisdell, 411-366, in match
play, before facing Bukas for the
title. Bukas had defeated Heather
Kime of Caledonia, 194-146, and
Lori Pientka of Baldwinsville,
200-166, in the first two games
of the stepladder finals.
Oakes said the key for her was
“keeping my head in it, not look-
ing up at the scores and taking a
lot of deep breaths in and out
before I threw the ball.” She and
her husband own their own busi-
ness, and they have one son who,
according to Oakes, “likes to
bowl just for fun.”
