    Taegeuk #5

    Meaning: SEON/Wind

This form holds one of the most important concepts for

the advancing martial artist. Wind can be a gentle breeze,

yet as it grows in intensity it gains power and destructive

force until it destroys everything in its path. The true

martial artist can harness this paradoxical strength and

weakness. The more powerful we become through our

Taekwondo training, the more peaceful and calm we

should become. This is the essence of the Tao - the Way.

Ms. Gaby certified 2nd Dan Black Belt.

    I joinedTKD in 2007. Before

my first class I was terrified, and

after I was exhausted!! As my

    ability to participate increased

    (without feeling like passing

out), I fell more and more in love

    with TKD; and with the

discipline, strength, coordination, and general ability to defend

myself. I also realized how good

it was for my health (minus the bruises) and my self-

perception. Not many people my age get to do what I do. I

also found the support and care of the TKD family which

was a huge unexpected bonus of joining Silva Martial Arts.

Ireally enjoy working with my classmates and watching the

    progress made.It is veryexciting!"

Gaby now proudly holdsher black belt in TKD as well

as a purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. She likes to joke: I

still cannot catch or throw a dodge ball... but I make great

    cookies!

    Belt Testing

Why I Love Belt Testing - By Mr. Hurst

You may not realize this, but from the first day you

step onto the mats, your instructors imagine the

Black Belt You; stepping onto those same mats in

5-10 years. Every time I watch a students first

class, I like to imagine...What kind of Black Belt will

they make? How much power will they find within

themselves? What kind of leading roles will they

play for their peers? Will they be a competition

    sparrer? An instructor?

Unfortunately most martial artists never make it to

Black Belt. The journey can be scary, time

consuming, challenging, and even frustrating. I

know the reasons all too well myself! In my senioryear of high school (when I tested for Black Belt) I

was very busy. I had to balance my AP classes, after

school programs, a part time job, TKD, and my

    family and friends.

And yet, some of you will overcome all these

challenges along the way and become a Black Belt.

You will greatly impact the studio and your

community. This is what I love about belt testing.

We get to see so many of you demonstrate your hard

work, and inch your way closer to the ultimate goal.

A Black Belt not just in martial arts, but in life.

    June Tip

It is very important to test

when you are ready, and not

    rush through your belts.

    Training hard, and

    perfecting your basics gives

    you stronger skills to build

on later.Very few people test every

    time from white to black

    belt. Most students miss a

    testing once in awhile,

    especially at the higher

    ranks.

Try not to focus on testing

    for belts or stripes. Instead

focus on perfecting yourskills, and doing your

    absolute best!
