Welcome to Jump Magazine. The kids are now set-tling in to their new school year. Somehow,

I know that many will not let on that they really do enjoy being there. It

is time to mark your calendars, parents. Open hous-es, report card nights and other special events need to be jotted down on a family calendar. Sometimes it is hard to make time to attend all those func-tions, and it multiplies with each more child that we have, but it is doable. Growing up, my parents, and especially my Dad, was constantly checking with our teachers, making sure that we did our homework, asking for our report cards, etc. We would not dare let him down. School was everything to us, includ-ing the social aspect. The influence that my par-ents had on our education is immeasurable. They pushed, cajoled, guided, bribed and expected us to learn and do our best. Follow your kids. Do what you can so they can say the same about you. Be that parent that cares and shows up in spite of a hard day’s work. I appreciate all your calls and e-mails in support of Jump Magazine. To Mr. Melvin Greenhill from McAl-len, thank you, especially for your calls of support, your history lessons and book gift. SharAmbrosia Chamomile Lip Balm· 1/2 tsp. Macadamia Nut oil· 1/2 tsp. Jojoba oil· 1 tsp. lanolin· 1/2 tsp. Cocoa butter· 1/2 tsp. Beeswax· 1/2 tsp. Chamomile flowers (dried)

In a double-boiler, melt 1/2 tsp. Macadamia Nut oil, 1/2 tsp. jojoba oil, 1/2 tsp. lanolin and 1/2 tsp. Cocoa butter until it is liquefied. Add 1/2 tsp. of dried Chamomile flowers and stir gently for about 10 minutes. Strain the mixture with a very fine sieve into a small Pyrex ramekin and clean the area of the double boiler where you had the mixture (Dry the area well). Pour the new strained mixture back into the double boiler and reheat. Add another 1/2 tsp. of lanolin and 1/2 tsp. of beeswax shavings. Heat and stir until liquefied completely. Remove from the heat and pour into a 1/2 oz. amber or cobalt container. This is enough for personal use. To use on dry hands, or to give as gifts, you’ll want to double or triple this recipe. This is a very soothing formula that has real “stay-ing” power.

SharAmbrosia Banana Facial Masque· 1 ripe ripe Banana· 1 T Honey· 1/2 teaspoon Jojoba oil· 1 T Yogurt· 1 egg white· 1 T Kaolin (white) clay

In a small mixing bowl, whisk the egg white, then blend in the Yogurt, Jojoba oil, Honey and then the Kaolin clay until it becomes a smooth creamy mixture. In a separate bowl, mash up the banana until it is smooth, then blend into the first mixture. The best way to use this masque is while sitting in the tub because it is a bit messy. Apply to the en-tire face, neck and shoulder area. As it sits, keep applying more while you build the masque up as well as massage it in. Let sit for at least 10-15 minutes and then remove with a warm washcloth. Finish with a tonic or hydrosol on a cotton ball to remove any excess product from the skin, then moisturize as usual. As always, the day was full of anticipa-tion at the mention of a Jump Family Road Trip. Where to, this time? We had talked about Beulah, the hurricane, and how our homes were spared of the flood. We had talked about the building of Falcon Dam and my brother, Wally, recalled that Dwight D. Eisenhower passed in a white, convertible Cadillac right in front of our La Joya Schools and all us school kids lined the fence waving small American Flags. He was on his way to the newly built Falcon Dam. We talked about how the people from Old Guerrero were relocated to higher ground because that land was needed to feed water to Falcon Dam. So, what better experience, at this time, than a visit to one of the Wonders of the Valley? At one time, 500,000 cubic feet of water was being released into the floodways.

We had been on a Day Trip to Falcon Dam for fishing, and that was so exciting and memorable, so everyone was look-ing forward to visiting. What we saw was the vastness of the lake, the millions of gallons of water released and the con-stant roaring of the water. We then went to an area, or a lookout point, outside of Zapata and the kids realized how “close” Mexico is. On a normal day, the water passing through this pass is just a trickle, but it was at flood stage. Still, Mexico is so near. We ended our day with a deli-cious meal at El Paraiso Restaurant in Zapata (yumiest chicken fried steak). So ended our wonderful day with our small family of fifteen--grandparents, parents, children. I long for the day when conditions in Mexico will “normalize” and we can visit

Old Guerrero on a Day Trip. Some of our children went there with us a long time ago, but the younger ones haven’t. There are material things that we can leave our children, but these stories will be passed down for generations if we play it right. How many of us have written some of these family stories for

our kids to pass on for a long time? Are they recorded somehow? What is it you want be remembered by? Are we pass-ing some of our personal history to our significant ones? As my granddaughter, Myranda, says, “thank you Mama for the experience,” and I know we’re doing what we should in passing on important experiences

Forrest Gump Goes To Heaven The day finally arrived. “ Forrest Gump dies and goes to Heaven. He is at the Pearly Gates, met by St. Peter himself. However, the gates are closed, and Forrest ap-proaches the gatekeeper. St. Peter said, ‘Well, Forrest, it is certainly good to see you. We have heard a lot about you. I must tell you, though, that the place is filling up fast, and we have been administering an entrance examination for everyone. The test is short, but you have to pass it before you can get into Heaven.’ Forrest responds, ‘It sure is good to be here, St. Peter, sir. But nobody ever told me about any entrance exam. I sure hope that the test ain’t too hard. Life was a big enough test as it was.’ St. Peter continued, ‘Yes, I know, Forrest, but the test is only three questions. First:What two days of the week begin with the letter T? Second:How many seconds are there in a year? Third:What is God’s first name?’ Forrest leaves to think the questions over. He returns the next day and sees St. Peter, who waves him up, and says, ‘Now that you have had a chance to think the questions over, tell me your answers.’ Forrest replied, ‘Well, the first one — which two days in the week begins with the letter ‘T’? Shucks, that one is easy…. That would be Today and Tomorrow.’ The Saint’s eyes opened wide and he exclaimed, ‘Forrest, that is not what I was think-ing, but you do have a point, and I guess I did not specify, so I will give you credit for that answer.. How about the next one?’ asked St. Peter. ‘How many seconds in a

year? Now that one is harder,’ replied Forrest, ‘but I thunk and thunk about that, and I guess the only answer can be twelve.’ Astounded, St. Peter said, ‘Twelve? Twelve? Forrest, how in Heaven’s name could you come up with twelve seconds in a year?’ Forrest replied, ‘Shucks, there’s got to be twelve: January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd… ‘ ‘Hold it,’ interrupts St. Peter. ‘I see where you are going with this, and I see your point, though that was not quite what I had in mind….but I will have to give you credit for that one, too. Let us go on with the third and final question. Can you tell me God’s first name’? ‘Sure,’ Forrest replied, ‘it’s Andy.’ ‘Andy?’ exclaimed an exas-perated and frustrated St. Peter. ‘Ok, I can understand how you came up with your answers to my first two ques-tions, but just how in the world did you come up with the name Andy as the first name of God?’ ‘Shucks, that was the easiest one of all,’ Forrest replied. ‘I learnt it from the song, ANDY WALKS WITH ME, ANDY TALKS WITH ME, ANDY TELLS ME I AM HIS OWN.’ St. Peter opened the Pearly Gates, and said: ‘Run, Forrest, Run.’

Tracking Devices: Beware This is an e mail I received and I am publishing it because it sounds like something that can happen. We love FREE things, so it might not be so far-fetched. Criminals are getting more sophisticated. There is a syndicate of criminals presenting themselves as sales promoters who are giving free key -rings holders at gas stations or parking lots. The key rings have a tracking device chip which allows them to follow you. Please don't accept them. They select their seemingly well-to-do potential victims and if you accept, then you will be in for their tricks. The key holders are very beautiful to resist accepting but remember you may end up paying more than the key holder including the risk to your life. Please advise your family members as well.

New Weapon for Self-Defense? Anything can be used as a weapon, but as crime rises and homes continue to be invaded, Americans will defend themselves any

way we can. I have received many e-mails touting the newest? weapon in defending ourselves. Although, the product is not new, it is one way can effectively deter someone if we use it right. It is ordinary wasp spray. I had heard of keeping a can of hair spray next to our bed and using it if necessary to spray a burglar’s eyes, but wasp spray makes more sense. It temporar-ily blinds someone and it can be sprayed from a long way off. Whatever the plan you have for self-defense, make sure it is a plan. Lots of rational thinking has to take place in a situation that is all-but-calm. In any emer-gency, we need to use our common sense and even then, emotions take over. Does your family have a plan in case of a break-in? Have you practiced that plan?

Cash Back? If you are using your bank card as a debit or are using a credit card, make sure that the receipt is correct. An e-mail alerts that inten-tional “cash back” amounts are being pocketed and done without customers even noticing. The “cash back” is being given as money back to the cashier’s friend that’s next in line. This may or may not be true, but it is possible. It just makes good sense to check your receipt any time you are paying for something, even if the amount is minimal.

A Parent’s Prayer Lord, make me a better parent. Help me to understand my children, to listen patiently to What they have to say and to answer all of their questions with kind-ness. Keep me from interrupting them and contradicting them when they are trying to communicate with me.Make me as courteous to them as I would like them to be courteous with me. Give me the courage to admit my mistakes against them, to ask them for forgiveness, when I know that I am in the wrong. May I not selfishly hurt the feelings of my children. Keep me from laughing at their mistakes or resorting to shame and ridicule as punishment. Let me not tempt my child to lie or steal by my actions. So guide every hour of the day that I may show by everything I say and do that honesty produces happiness. Reduce, I pray, the meanness in me. May I not nag; and when I am not feeling well Help me to think before I speak. Blind me to the little errors of my children and help me to see the good things that they do. Give me a ready word for approval and praise. Help me communi-

cate. Help me to treat my children as those of their own age, but let me impart the judgment and knowledge and behavior of adults. Allow me not to rob my children of the opportunities they will have to take care of themselves, to think for themselves, to choose for themselves, and to make decisions for themselves. Forbid that I should ever punish them for my selfish satisfaction. This is an absolutely wonderful way to cook brisket. The result is tender, succulent and flavor-ful, and it’s practically foolproof. The wonderful aroma will fill your house and make you, and anyone else who comes along, impatient for it to get done. Only an expert would be able to dis-tinguish this oven-baked brisket from one that spent twelve hours in the smoker. 5- to 6-pound fresh beef brisket, well trimmed 1 cup barbecue sauce (your favorite) 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce 1/4 cup liquid smoke (Colgin’s is best) 1 tablespoon garlic powder 2 teaspoons celery salt 2 teaspoons lemon pepper 1 teaspoon salt 1 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup water Preheat oven to 275°F. In a very large Pyrex baking dish, thoroughly mix all ingredients for sauce. Put the brisket in the baking dish, and turn it over once to coat it with the sauce. Seal the dish tightly with heavy-duty aluminum foil. Bake at 275°F for 5 to 7 hours (about 1 hour and 15 minutes per pound). Remove from oven and allow to stand for 1 hour before slicing. Slice across the grain, and serve with sauce. Makes 8 to 10 servings. Note: Before you prepare the brisket, remove it from the refrigerator far enough ahead of time to allow it to come to room temperature.

You can tell everybody you baked these beans from scratch, and they’ll never know the difference. 2 1-pound (or 15-1/2 ounce) cans pork and beans 1 pound bacon 1/2 cup chopped onions 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

2 tablespoons molasses 2 tablespoons catsup 1/2 teaspoon dried mustard Preheat oven to 350°F. Drain the liquid from the beans. Remove and discard that token scrap of pork fat (if that’s what it really is) they put in each can. Put the beans in a 2-quart bak-ing dish. Fry the bacon, remove it from the skillet and drain on paper towels. Sauté the onion in the bacon drippings until it is transparent. Remove onion with a slotted spoon and add to beans. In a small bowl, blend the brown sugar, molas-ses, catsup and dried mustard. Break or tear the bacon into 1-inch pieces and add to beans. Add the brown sugar mixture, and stir gently until all ingredients are incorpo-rated. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes, stirring once. Makes 8 to 10 servings.


Nanotechnology has not only brought nature and engineering closer together; it has encouraged collaboration among researchers of different disciplines.

In one such collaboration, two researchers drew on the extraordinary stickiness of a gecko’s foot to develop a syn-thetic adhesive to help robots scale walls. NSF-funded researchers Mark Cutkosky, an engineer at Stanford University, and Kellar Autumn, a biologist at Lewis and Clark College, have collaborated to develop a gecko-like synthetic adhesive

that functions like real gecko bristles for climbing applica-tions. The team discovered the fundamental physics principles underlying gecko adhesion, which enabled the invention of an adhesive nanostructure. The Tokay gecko, one of the larg-est and heaviest geckos, served as inspiration. “The challenge was simply to get robots to go where robots have never been able to go before, like up walls of build-ings,” said Cutkosky. “If robots can climb vertical surfaces, then they can do inspection of buildings and bridges and other hard- to-reach places.” Cutkosky received a four-year, $1 million National Science Foundation research grant that

funded the development of the first gecko-like synthetic adhesive (GSA) that works like real gecko bristles. Autumn received two NSF grants for continued research on gecko adhesion. Cutkosky’s team col-

laborated with Kellar Autumn and his gecko lab to determine whether a synthetic adhesive could be applied to robots. “The collaboration with Mark’s group has been incredibly productive. Based on micro-force measurements, we hy-pothesized that a coupling of shear force and adhesion was responsible for control of the geckos’ attachment system,” said Autumn.

A gecko’s foot possesses a sophisticated adhesion system that uses van der Waals forces, which are the basic molecular attraction that exists between molecules. Van der Waals forces allow geckos to climb

and hang on a smooth and vertical surfaces using one toe. Cutkosky and

his team have been design-ing bio-inspired robots which use van der Waals forces. Their most recent design is sticky-bot, a robot that has gecko-like pads, which allows it to scale walls and buildings. National Science Foundation (NSF) Discoveries nsf.gov.nationalsciencefoundation

Researchers move one step closer to nature with the development of polymers and directional adhesion that follow the workings of a gecko’s foot.

Mix 1 tablespoon of white glue and 1 tablespoon of bread crumbs with your fa-vorite color paint. Stir with a spoon or stick until well-mixed. You may need to add more glue or bread crumbs. Mix the dough until

you can pick it up and roll it into small same-sized balls.

Stick a tooth pick through the mid-dle of

each bead and hang out to dry. Do not place on a flat surface or beads will flatten.Air dry the beads for a few days, turning them a couple of times. Drying them out in the sun also works well.

When beads are thoroughly dry, remove the toothpicks and make your necklace with your favorite color of ribbon(s). Plastic beads be-tween may dress up your necklace or bracelet. Finish with a bow on the string.
