NAPLAN 2010 Student NAPLAN reports were posted out to parents and carers last week. The school is particularly proud to have been successful in reaching the targets from the School Plan associated with literacy and numeracy growth rates. Whilst there were many great individual results, there were some outstanding results in student growth. The most significant include Year 7 Writing where Warren Central students grew 19 points above the state growth, Year 9 Reading where students grew 23 points above state growth, Year 9 Grammar and Punctuation where our students grew 24.4 points above state growth and finally Year 9 Numeracy where students grew a staggering 28.7 points above state growth. The growth in Year 9 Numeracy was by far the best in the Western NSW Region. Congratulations to all the teachers and students who worked extremely hard to meet School Plan targets and individual expectations. We are now completing a thorough analysis of the results and this will enable the school to focus on areas of need and formulate programs to support improved growth for all students. Premier’s Spelling Bee 2010 Congratulations to Arielle Irving and Madeline Williams of Year 5 who competed in the Senior Section of the regional Spelling Bee finals last Tuesday in Dubbo. Arielle made it through to the final rounds of the final before being eliminated. Savannah Nielsen and Felix Weston competed in the Junior Section of the Western Region Final. 3/4 Ecologists – Procedures and Recounts 3/4 Ecologists have been very clever and combined the Text Types Procedure and Recount into one. We are doing a Procedural Recount, which is sometimes also called a Scientific Recount, especially when we are recounting a scientific experience. Mr Davis explained what we were going to do, then set out the materials we were to use. These included the following things:

Clear plastic

Cotton wool

Sweet Basil seeds and

Chives seeds.

We were told we would be working in our normal table groups. Firstly, each group received two plastic cups. Mr Davis then showed us how to scrunch up some cotton wool to put inside the cups, so the second step was to put some cotton wool in the bottom of each cup. The third step was to carefully moisten the cotton wool with some tap water. Mr Davis warned us not to put too much water in each cup. Lastly, each group received some seeds. The sweet basil seeds were carefully sprinkled over the moist cotton wool in one cup, and the chives seeds were sprinkled over the moist cotton wool in the other cup. Each groups‟ cups were labelled and placed on the windowsill. We then had a class discussion about what we had just done, and Mr Davis wrote our procedure on the board. We then went back to our tables and took turns writing each step in our group scrapbooks. After that, we drew and labelled a diagram of each step. Mr Davis advised us that we shouldn‟t let our cotton wool dry out, so we need to check the cups each day and water them if necessary. Once a week, we will take a close look at our seeds and write about how they might be changing. We will also draw and label new diagrams showing the changes. Mr I. Davis and 3/4 Ecologists

Western Region Athletics, Dubbo - 3 September 2010 Athletes travelled from as far away as Broken Hill, Lithgow and Bourke. The competition was very tough with many of the athletes at this level training regularly and taking their events very seriously. A strong, icy wind blew across the track and field all day making the conditions for running, jumping and throwing very difficult!

WCS students braved the conditions and represented NARRAF Gobondery proudly. The pressure was high and to compete at a Regional level is a credit to all athletes. Well done to: Max Irving (100m, 800m) Larissa Kennedy (100m, Junior Girls Relay) Jane Carey (Discus and Shotput) Abigail Irving (Junior Girls Relay) Zofia Mara (Long Jump) Dylan Parkes- Blanch (Shotput) Brittany Darcy-Hutchinson (200m, 800m, long jump and Junior Girls Relay) Kayla Higgins (Junior Girls Relay) Donald Kennedy (Senior Boys Relay) Mark Kilpatrick (800m, Senior Boys Relay) Daniel Stanley (Senior Boys Relay) Hugo Weston (800m, Senior Boys Relay) Special mention must go to Larissa Kennedy and the Senior Boys relay team. Larissa filled in at the last minute for the Junior Girls Relay team. Thank you Larissa!! The Senior Boys relay team qualified for the final with a great run and slick handoffs, a credit to them and the training from Mrs Karlene Irving. Let‟s start training for next year and watch the track and field events at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, 3-14 October for inspiration!

Careers Department It has been a very busy term in the Careers Department. Students in careers classes have been working on resumes and completing a new work book from the Australian Blueprint for Career Development. The work booklets are getting students used to career language such as competency and performance indicators. This will also be beneficial if students are taking HSC VET classes. Year 9 are working on Area A: Personal Management Career Competency 1: Build and Maintain a positive self concept. Phase 3: Develop abilities to maintain a positive self concept. Students have been studying activities on Personal Qualities, Interests and goals and how this can relate to their future work habits, Giving and receiving feedback, Allies and Assets – Significant influences in the Career making decision and Personal Characteristics. Year 10 are working on Area B: Learning and Work Exploration: Career Competency 4: Participate in life-long learning. Phase 3: Link life-long learning to the career Building process. This has encompassed Learning Styles, choosing an occupation to meet life career goals, Work role Requirements and learning and the Workplace. Year 11 have been working on Area C which is Career Building – Secure/create and maintain work. Phase 3: Develop abilities to seek, obtain/create and maintain work. This is focusing on Employability skills, sources of information, preferred work aspects and Volunteer work.

Speaking of Volunteer work I would like to thank all the Students so far that have volunteered for the Calara House Afternoon tea program. While it can be a little daunting, students come away with an appreciation of the service and it provides some new skills and an awareness of the needs of the community. Year 12 has been extremely busy this term. Some students have put in for the Early Entry Programs at Charles Sturt University of New England and Southern Cross. Three students in year 12 will also be vying for the Auscott Scholarship with interviews being conducted this week. Other students are applying for apprenticeships and traineeships and attending Private colleges. Whatever the outcome of these I would like to wish Year 12 all the best for their futures. Thank you also to other staff members that have been instrumental in helping Year 12 with their career choices; as the careers position is only 2 days it makes it impossible to get everything done. I really appreciate your help. Students approximately every 3 weeks get a careers News emailed to them through their DET portal this can also be accessed at home. This contains local and non local career opportunities, Employment tips, Career Profiles, University news, TAFE, Private College and Apprenticeship information. Students also access this in their careers lesson and save it into their profile folders on the schools network system. Students in Years 9 -12 have also completed the online Student pathway survey. In looking at the statistics the majority of our students feel comfortable with their ability to make informed career decisions. Students in the senior study also have access to University, Tafe, Private college information, Defence Jobs, the jobs guide (of which all students in Year 9-12 will receive), Australian Apprenticeships and Scholarship information. These all have phone numbers, email addresses and further contacts. Students get an “Express” magazine which has career information detailed as well. Any student who would like a tax file number the cut off date will be Week 5 Term 4. Students will need to put a birth certificate number on the forms. Students can collect the forms from, and return the forms to me. Mrs F. Mara – Careers Advisor.
