Klimt and Schiele: A Centennial Celebration Thursday, August 30, 1PM 2018 marks 100 years since the deaths of Austrian masters Gustav Klimt(1862–1918) and Egon Schiele (1890–1918). Professor Thomas Germano will present the accomplishments and important works of the two greatest Viennese modernists.

FINE ARTS LECTURE SERIES

An Afternoon at the Barnes Foundation (Rescheduled from March 22) Thursday, August 2, 1PM

Home to one of the world's greatest collections of Impressionist, post-Impressionist, and modern paintings, with notably fine holdings by Renoir, Cézanne, and Matisse, the Barnes is a remarkable collection. Art appraiser and lecturer Louise Cella Caruso will present.

Women Artists in Paris, 1850-1900 Monday, July 30, 1PM

An international array of women were among the artists who worked and studied in 19th-century Paris. In this talk, Art Historian Vivian Gordon will highlight works by well-known painters as well as less familiar women artists.

Public Parks, Private Gardens - Paris to Provence Thursday, July 12, 1PM

From 1852 until the beginning of World War I, France blossomed - literally and figuratively. During this period, the country enjoyed a flood of new and exotic botanical specimens in public and private gardens. Art historian Mary Vahey will discuss the important role of parks and gardens in French life during this period.

Renoir’s Luncheon of The Boating Party Thursday, August 16, 1PM

Art History Professor Mary Vahey will introduce carefully chosen works which reveal the story of this historic work by Pierre Auguste Renoir, as well as the artists and patrons who were instrumental in its success.

Georgia O'Keeffe: Visions of Hawaii Thursday, September 13, 1PM Professor Thomas Germano will discuss the current New York Botanical Garden exhibit as well as the life and work of artist Georgia O'Keeffe. O’Keeffe’s depictions of Hawaii explore the islands’ dramatic landscapes and exotic flora of Hawaii and have not been seen together in New York since their debut in 1940. Constantin Brancusi: Sculpture Transformed

Thursday, September 27, 1PM A friend and colleague of leading avant-garde artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Henri Matisse, and Amedeo Modigliani, Brancusi has been called a founding father of modern sculpture. Art Historian Vivian Gordon will discuss his innovative and initially controversial works that simplified subjects to their pure essential forms.

Broadway was the main stem of show business until the rise of rock turned it into a glamorous side street. Historian and author John Kenrick will discuss how violent changes in popular culture 50 years ago led to changes in the staging of musical theatre in shows ranging from Sweet Charity to Hair!

Summer in the City: Through August 10. This exhibit features works by members of the West End Arts Visual Artists Guild.

Sheila Safer Retrospective: August 15 through September 28. The talented artist Sheila Safer, a former Lawrence resident originally from Wooster, MA, has created a variety of types of work over a long artistic career. This show will highlight the scope and variety of her pieces.

Strokes and Stroke Prevention Monday, July 16, 1PM Certain risk factors can increase your chances of having a stroke. Stroke prevention expert Corazon Paraso, RN will speak about identifying and reduc-ing risk factors, as well as how to recognize and respond quickly during a stroke event.

Diet for Healthy Aging Monday, August 13, 1PM In this lecture, registered dietitian Pnina Mohr will discuss super foods for heart health and share tips on which foods to focus on and which to avoid for a long and healthy life.

The Great Give Back Coming this Fall!

The Great Give Back is an Island-wide day dedicated to community service initiatives for the patrons of Long Island libraries to participate in meaningful, service-oriented experiences. Past projects include food and clothing drives, D.I.Y animal shelter donations, cards for veterans, and so much more!
