News from the United Methodist Women.....

Thank you, thank you, thank you! With the congre-gation’s generous support, we were able to assembleand send 21 Health Kits, 17 School Kits, and 11Bedding Kits to Conference.

The women will be working on crafts during ourJuly 10 and August 14 regular 10 am meetings. We would love to have anyone come help who has ideas for crafts or who enjoys working on crafts. Come join us! The crafts will be sold during LebFest in October.

Mark your calendar for a church-wide meeting and lunch on Sunday, Aug. 13 following the 10 am church service. The topic will be on interacting with and supporting family members and friends with dementia.

In September or October, we plan to present a church-wide meeting on wills and trusts. The date and time will be determined in the near future. Please look for the details for this event in the church bulletin!

The Righteous Outlaws will be playing a huge ben-efit for Circles-Ashland on Sat., Aug. 26 at Center of the Universe, 11293 Airpark Road in Ashland. It is a Bar-B-Que cookoff, silent auction and en-tertainment extravaganza. Proceeds will benefit Circles-Ashland. The Righteous Outlaws perform from 1 pm to 4 pm followed by Undercover Wagon. Should be a great summer event for a great cause. Want to see the Outlaws sooner? Catch them at O’Banks on July 14 and/or James River Winery on July 21.

Lebanon will serve as host for the August Birthday Party at the Hermitage on Tuesday, Aug. 15. The celebration will begin at 6:30 pm with entertain-ment. We are looking for some youth or adults who would provide a short talent show for the entertainment this year...play an instrument, sing, dance, etc. This event has become a wonderfullyrewarding experience for both our youth and the elderly residents!

As in the past, it would be nice to have youth pres-ent to serve the cake and ice cream to all residents attending the party and lead the group in singing Happy Birthday. Each resident celebrating an Au-gust birthday will receive a small gift. If you can help with the entertainment and/or are available to help with serving refreshments, please contact Lynda Hawkins at [email protected] or at (804) 405-5190.

10 am - Worship

Ahhhh, summer. Trips, grills, vacations, pools, beaches, mountains, families, so on and so on and so on. It’s a time of year where the weather and our schedules leave us freedom and ability to do different things than we normally do during the rest of the year. It is truly a wonderful time of year. As people break from their routine, it’s also a time of year when I am asked, “But do I really have to come to church (most) every Sunday?” What a great question? I was reading an article by Tyler Edwards in RELEVANT magazine that addresses that very issue. You can read the full article here, https://relevantmagazine.com/article/do-you-really-have-to-go-to-church-every-sunday/

Tyler addresses the question this way,

“The best place to look for an answer is in what the Bible has to say. Let’s start with Acts 2:42. Acts 2 gives us a picture of the Church before the sinfulness and selfishness of modern man corrupted it. We are told that the Church was devoted to the fellowship of believers. It’s one of the four primary things the early Church prioritized.

The essential text to answer this question comes from Hebrews 10:24-25:

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near (Hebrews 10:24-25).

So, we have Biblical command that says not to neglect meeting together. It’s not ambiguous. Hebrews clearly tells us that we need to make the community of God a priority in our lives.

Add that to what Jesus says in John 14:15: “if you love me, keep my commands” and what you have is a pretty strong imperative to engage in Godly community. It gets better. In the second century, community was a lifestyle.

Community was a daily thing (see Acts 2:46). To the original audience of the letter of Hebrews, only meeting once a week would have been “to neglect meeting together.”

Society changes. Culture changes. As such, so can the application of a certain text. However, the principle of the mes-sage here is clear: The people of God should be invested in and treat the community of God as a priority.”

Now don’t get me wrong. Going to church every Sunday does not mean that you have a deep relationship with God, or visa versa. “So why go?” you may ask. Tyler has this to say, “When we invest ourselves in the Church because we recognize it’s an opportunity to grow closer to God through relationships with His people and our motivation is to have more of God in our lives, then [going to church becomes] a joy [rather than another empty obligation].”

Now, I’m not saying to plan your trips in such a way that you don’t ever miss church. What I am saying is don’t take a break from going to church. It feeds us, it nourishes us, it encourages us. And as we are fed, nourished, and encouraged, someone else in the congregation is counting on you to do the same for them. Plus, church is a means of God’s excellent grace and an access point to His joy.

One last thought from Tyler Edwards, “While church isn’t perfect, it is the theater in which God chooses to display His awesome power. The more we invest in it, the more we see the power of God at work through it.”

Let’s participate in God’s awesome power together!

Have a great summer,

Pastor Spencer

From Your Stewardship Team:

Traveling this summer? If you need a way to keep up with your donations to LUMC, please be re-minded that Lebanon offers electronic giving. You can arrange to have automated payments made from your bank account or use a credit or debit card. This process allows you to keep up with intend-ed donations and allows the church to receive its needed contributions on a consistent basis.

If you are interested in electronic giving for the summer or all year, please visit the Giving link on the church website, www.lebanonumc.org, to register. The process is simple but if you would like help, Susan Martin is available to assist you. She can be reached at 804-363-7990 or [email protected].
