Please contact Pastor Rich at 528-1649 for more information. Note from Rich On the Sunday following the May 23rd shootings in Isla Vista, I shared with the congregation some of my personal memories of my 8 years as a pastor in that community. I shared my concern that our United Methodist ministry in that community had been reduced over the years. I believe that the church’s presence in Isla Vista is vitally important. However, the community of Isla Vista, consisting of 90% renters, mostly students, has not been able to fund such a ministry. The vital ministry that has happened there has always needed denominational and regional support. Since then I became aware that the Church’s property at 890 Camino Del Sur had been developed to include student housing, and that this project was producing funding to expand our ministry to students and to the community of Isla Vista. When attending Annual Conference in Redlands last week, I asked some of my campus ministry and North District colleagues about this possibility, but no one knew the specifics. As I drove home I took a slight detour to stop in Isla Vista, walk around my old church, and see the new apartment buildings. Another time that I felt compelled to comment on the news in worship was last November regarding the church trial of Frank Schaefer in Pennsylvania. The Rev. Schaefer presided at the wedding of his gay son in Massachusetts 6 years earlier. A disgruntled member of his church learned about it and issued a complaint, resulting in the trial and the removal of Schaefer's clergy credentials. At the time I expressed my support for Rev. Schaefer and my personal commitment to our altar being open to all persons regardless of sexual orientation. Two days after I returned from Annual Conference an United Methodist appeals court in the North East Jurisdiction reinstated Frank Schaefer's clergy credentials. His membership was transferred to the Cal-Pac Conference by an agreement between the two bishops, and the same day Bishop Carcaño announced that she is appointing The Rev. Schaefer to the newly created Isla Vista Student Ministry position, effective July 1st. This is good news. I look forward to welcoming Pastor Schaefer to ministry here on the California coast. I invite you to pray that his presence will be a blessing to the people of Isla Vista and UC Santa Barbara. United Methodist Women On June 22, United Methodist Women awarded a Special Mission Recognition to two members of our church, Joe and Thelma Randolph. A gift was made in there names to the Women’s Division of the United Methodist Church. Joe and Thelma were selected for this award because of their visitation ministry. For several years, they have quietly and faithfully visited many hospitalized and homebound members of our church, almost on a weekly basis. Both Joe and Thelma have been involved in other activities of the church: Joe especially with the Tuesday Crew and Thelma in making arts and crafts for the annual UMW bazaar, plus much more. We thank them for all they have done and are doing.
