We’re also particularly excited this summer about the launch of our brand new Pop Up Shop showcasing the best of Irish designed goods. (See page 28 for details.)We are also launching the RUA RED Café Bar, which sees a wonderful programme of daytime and evening events, as well as a lovely outdoor dining area. Read our interview with Café manager Frank on page 27 to find out more.

During August, performance artist Anthony Schrag will be living and working in the community, leading to a series of fun and unusual interventions and events. Keep your eyes peeled for some of his ideas as he wants you to get involved! (see page 13).Anthony’s final project will take place on Sep 14th for our Family Open Day which is part of the country wide Gathering celebrations. GLITCH at RUA RED brings together a selection of Ireland and Europe’s leading artists, theorists, researchers, curators and artist groups working in media and technology to explore contemporary cultural and critical issues, both emerging and established, that arise from artists’ investigations into digital technology.

This year, GLITCH presents a series of exhibitions, taking place both online and in the gallery, that examines how digital artists are engaging with and responding to the current economic, political, and cultural factors that shape the Internet. The festival will discuss and

explore how the practice of the digital artist is in transition, not only due to the development of digital technologies, but also because digital artists are increasingly informed by offline factors that affect how the Internet, as a creative platform, is being developed.

Walking on white lines is an exploration of human need and rejection through film and contemporary dance. The exhibition looks at the delicate yet urgent need to escape. Working from the footage of their dance film Motion Sickness, the artists have created a five screen video installation dissecting the fragile narrative of the original work.

These are made into singular compelling dance frames for the viewer to piece together. The films are accompanied by a sound composition and individual sound design. Elements and objects from the film are presented within the installation. Crows lie gathered in piles around the space. A lone red matchbox car is left stranded in the gallery.

Motion Sickness is an award winning dance film that has screened across twenty festivals worldwide. The film is a collaboration between choreographer Jessica Kennedy and filmmaker John McIlduff and commissioned by RUA RED. Motion Sickness is set in a Tallaght car park and features a local marching band and forty dead crows.A live performance will accompany the exhibition. Date to be confirmed..

Jessica Kenendy, Dancer in Residence at RUA RED, is a choreographer and dance artist based in Dublin. Jessica trained in the United States, Dublin and London, completing her degree in Dance and English Literature at Middlesex University, London. Jessica is Co-Artistic Director of Junk Ensemble, creating multi-award winning shows including TheFalling Song (Belfast Festival Queens/Dublin Dance Festival 2012), Sometimes We Break (Tate London commission 2012), Bird With Boy (Dublin Theatre Festival 2012/DFF 2011), Five Ways to Drown (National Tour 2012/Dublin Dance Festival 2010), Pygmalian Revisited (Aix en Provence commission 2010), Drinking Dust (DFF 2008) and The Rain Party (DFF 2007). John McIlduff is a writer, filmmaker and stage director. The Dance of Making and Time… and Again are two conceptually linkedworks developed by filmmaker/choreographer Mary Wycherley andsound artist/composer Jürgen Simpson between 2009 and 2012.Presented together, these contrasting yet complimentary works extend the definition of what constitutes a dance film work. Curated by Dance Ireland and presented in association with RUA RED and Mary Wycherley.

The Dance of Making (2012)Video Triptych The Dance of Making explores the human processes which lie at the heart of living culture. Informed by contemporary dance’s deep awareness of the body, movement and embodiment, the work focuses on the act of creation in traditional handcrafts and activities such as uilleann pipe-making, hand-weaving and dry stonewalling.

Time...and Again (2009)Time and Again examines the language of film from the perspective of dance making. The transformational capacity of its slow motion highlights movement detail and aims to draw the viewers’ attention closer to the gesture. Working with a non-trained dancer as performer, this film highlights the potential for movement and dance in all.

Mary Wycherley is a dance artist whose practice spans choreography, live performance, and Screendance. Her films are regularly featured at international dance and film festivals.

Mary’s performance and film collaborators include choreographers Mary Nunan, Yoshiko Chuma, composers Jürgen Simpson and Steve McCourt, artists Maria Kerin, David Stalling and Anthony Kelly and photographer Maurice Gunning.

Celebrating 21 years in 2013, Dance Ireland is a membership-led organisation, which celebrates, develops and promotes the diversity of dance practices in Ireland today. ‘Co-location’ is a solo exhibition of new work by Fiona Marron completed while on residency at RUA RED. The exhibition encompasses elements of video and sculptural installation, which together, through a number of researched histories, examine value systems and probe the dynamic infrastructure behind current international channels of trade.

Through engaging in a process of enquiry surrounding a transformational period in Chicago’s trading history, the crossovers between the worlds of science fiction and global finance are considered within the exhibition Co-location. In focus is a key figure of that history, former chairman of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, who accredits the major changes he implemented in computerising financial trading to ideas first imagined in his sci-fi writing of the eighties. Alongside his several published titles in the line of finance, his only published sci-fi title can be seen as the catalyst for the worlds first futures electronic trading platform, and a consequential step towards the proliferation of trades made globally today.

In the course of following up one such history, other tangential histories have emerged and are explored within Co-location.

Fiona Marron was born in Co. Monaghan in 1987. She graduated from Fine Art at Dublin Institute of Technology in 2009 and is currently completing an MA in Visual Arts Practice, IADT Dun Laoghaire. Solo exhibitions include ‘Last and First Men’ at The Joinery, Dublin (2011), ‘As Topic and Tool’ at The Joinery (2010) and ‘For Who Knows What’ at FOUR, Dublin (2009). The advancement of fibre optic technology has been paramount to the developments in global trading, facilitating the current widespread practice of high frequency trading (HFT), a volatile and contentious activity. As a system, its operations are internet dependent and thus rooted in a physical network of sub-sea and earth optical fibre cables, an infrastructure which also becomes relevant in the exhibitions manifestation. With questions around the importance of geographical specificity another fundamental concern, the work engages consideration around the nature of time-space compression.

The sculptural works created for this solo exhibition by artist Molly O’Dwyer are fabricated using everyday materials such as floorboards, tiles and fencing; each brought together into an assemblage form. Some works are illuminated internally casting shadows upon the walls of the space, others are themselves projected upon. Light here is an animating force, infiltrating the structure and projecting from the assemblage forming phantoms; projections of an ephemeral landscape. Time exists in the abstract, present in the texture of the found objects and the moving image; the perception of time manufacturing a multiplicity of perspectives.

Molly O’Dwyer (b.1980) is a visual artist from Dublin. She holds an MFA from NCAD, Dublin and a first class B.A. in Fine Art from D.I.T. The artist here uses the materiality of the works to transect the narratological into vibrating particles of past present and future. The frame of reference therefore is essentially one of becoming: becoming-molecular, becoming-assemblage, becoming-imperceptible.

Submissions may be in any discipline: painting, sculpture, new media, printmaking, ceramics, glass, photography, installation and jewellery. This open submission is an opportunity for graduates, emerging and established artists from Ireland to exhibit their work in Gallery 1.

The winner of the RUA RED Art Prize will be awarded a solo show during the ensuing 12 month period. The People’s Choice Award winner, determined by a public vote from visitors to the exhibition, will collect €1000.

The Annual Winter Open Show will take place from 23rd November – 21st December 2013.

Deadline for submissions is 5pm Thursday, 15 August 2013.

All works submitted for exhibition are considered by a Selection Panel comprising of independent curators who have significant experience in the field of contemporary art and whose decision to accept or reject is final. Paul McAree (Director & Curator FLOOD), Grace McEvoy (Visual Arts Coordinator, BLOCK T) and Claire McAree (Visual Arts Coordinator, The Dock) confirmed guest panelists.

THE GATHERINGDAY SAT 14 SEPThis year as part of The Gathering 2013, RUA RED are holding an Arts Gathering Open Day on September 14th from 11am-4pm. This community open day will be the culmination of international performance artist Anthony Schrag’s month long collaboration with the neighbourhood (see interview with Anthony on page 15). This will be a participatory event, inviting visitors of all ages to explore, collaborate and create.

There will be local artists, writers, actors, dancers, musicians, filmmakers, face painters, clowns and much more at this wonderful day for all the family. This even will feature building tours, workshops, a busking competition, local bands showcase and musical performances throughout the day, showcasing some of the wonderful talent and opportunities available in South Dublin.

We look forward to sharing the wonderful artistic cultural output that Tallaght, RUA RED and the many individuals and groups that use RUA RED on a daily basis have to offer, with visitors from abroad. There will be opportunities to partake in different parts of the days proceedings as well as profiling the work of local artists and musicians.

Join us also to explore our special viewing of our dance exhibition by dancer Jessica Kennedy and film maker John McIlduff and DanceHouse. Learn about acting techniques, take part in a digital storytelling workshop, make your mark on our map of home and marvel at the skills of the different organizations taking part on the day.

We will also be holding the prizegiving for our Welcome Home postcard competition in association with The Echo and The Pictureworks, in which winning entries will be displayed on 10,000 postcards sent throughout the globe!

About the ArtistAnthony Schrag was born in Zimbabwe and grew up in the Middle East, the UK and Canada. His work is research-led and ‘socially engaged’ in as much as he prefers working with communities, creating event-based projects in which participants are an active and integral components. He is also interested in developing collective narratives, developing new knowledge and asking questions that encourages communities, groups or individuals to explore their place in the world, and believes these are the sorts of issues that are relevant to the citizens of Tallaght and the surrounding area.

So how did you get into performance art?Personally, I wouldn’t call what I do “performance art” because it always makes me think of people getting naked and covering themselves with pigs blood or something. Performance art always makes me think of ‘pretending’ and I’m interested in a real exchange - something not representational.

How would you describe your practice?I suppose the easiest thing is to say: “I do things with people”.What I am interested in is developing projects that are fun, meaningful and a bit dangerous; “fun” because it engages a wider group of people, thus making it more democratic. “meaningful” because it inspires a public’s ownership of the project - so it’s not just me doing something, but us, doing something together... and “a bit dangerous” because that is where new knowledge is.

What do you intend on doing during your stay in Tallaght?I’d like to explore the immediate area around The Square, The Council buildings and RUA RED as sites of cultural production. How I generally approach a project is through a series of questions: what do we mean by culture? Who makes it? Who decides it? Who owns culture? How I’d like to do that is to develop interventions, installations, wee events and actions that might draw people out from their daily experience and see the world immediately around them slightly differently. As much of my work is site responsive, I won’t know exactly what I will do until I get there and start working with folks. It makes planning (and interviews about my work!) quite difficult, but it’s the best way to work, because it means I am truly collaborating with residents, rather than a ‘cookie-cutter’ work that can be implemented anywhere.

What do you hope will be the outcome?I try not to prejudge or predict what an event might be or become... but I HOPE it will be fun, meaningful and a bit dangerous - I hope that it engages a wide spectrum of folks, that it explores the meaningful things in life and that it’s not always comfortable... because those are the best things in life, aren’t they? I am aiming for a shared experience that asks interesting questions about life and our place within it. And that we’ll have a laugh.

Culture Night is a night of entertainment, discovery and adventure in Dublin and across 34 towns throughout Ireland. Arts and Cultural organizations open their doors until late with hundreds of free events, tours, talks and performances for families and individuals to enjoy.

RUA RED have an exciting line up planned for our own culture night and this will include artist studio tours and performances, a teen drama workshop, digital storytelling drop in project, building tours, theatrical performances, art exhibitions, poetry and literary readings and much more. PHOTO WALKSDesigned to provide an understanding of digital cameras, the walks will leave from RUA RED and participants will work in pairs.The Photo Walks are facilitated by Create School, who specialise in providing educational workshops in digital media. The editing work will take place in the digital lab in RUA RED under the careful guidance and instruction of Peter Baxter of Create School, where participants will learn to touch up and print photos.

10 DAYS IN DUBLINRUA RED are supporting this year’s 10 Days in Dublin Festival. This exciting and innovative festival is only in its third year and yet has truly established itself as one of Dublin’s best not for profit open format festivals. 10 Days in Dublin includes all types of art and performance: music, comedy, theatre, film, painting and sculpture. This year RUA RED and The Dublin Fringe Festival 2013 have joined up to provide two rehearsal residencies which will be allocated to participants of The Dublin Fringe Festival 2013. Support through the run up to the festival will be awarded to an individual or group specializing in the mode of dance as well as an individual or group performing new work. Dublin Fringe is Ireland’s largest multi-disciplinary arts festival. Now in its 18th year, the festival stages up to 525 events in over 40 venues, and around 150,000 people have at least one Fringe experience during the Festival. It is a platform for the best new, emerging Irish arts companies and a showcase for the best contemporary theatre and dance shows touring internationally. For artists, the Fringe facilitates an opportunity to innovate, to cross disciplines and boundaries and to find new ways and places to create work.

TALLAGHT YOUNG FILMMAKERS

Tallaght Young Filmmakers is an award-winning youth-led filmmaking group that meet weekly in RUA RED. They work with professional filmmakers to devise their own scripts and shoot their own films. Master classes with professional filmmakers focus on film critique, scriptwriting, sound, acting, directing, editing and more.

See some examples of work and activities undertaken by the Tallaght Young Filmmakers as well as info and opportunity in all art forms on www.noisesouthdublin.com.Anyone aged 14 – 18 is welcome to join.

RUA RED have teamed up with Theatrical Juggernaut THEATREclub to try and assemble all of the good news from Tallaght.

We are asking people to get in touch and tell us their good news stories. From brand new babies, winning a tenner on a scratchcard or maybe something like a blossoming romance - we want them all! Our café will become awash with good news to make us all feel great this August with this part story telling, part creative writing project.

July sees the launch af the newly improved RUA RED Café Bar. You will notice a number of changes about the place which will include a wonderful outdoor space providing an opportunity for an after work glass of wine in a distinctive environment. Alongside the daytime café programme of events, we will be introducing a new menu and night time entertainment.To find out a bit more about the cafe, we asked Frank Guinevan the cafe manager a few questions about the evolution of the RUA RED Cafe Bar....

Tell us a bit about RUA RED Café up to nowThe café has been open now for over a year and we have built up a loyal local following alongside artists and creative types, who come for our signature sandwiches and unique Ariosa blend coffee, alongside the delicious gateaux and pastries. It has a real community atmosphere and it’s always lovely to see our regulars. Care to fill us in on some of the plans for the RUA RED Café bar?We are planning to develop a more extensive afternoon and evening experience, including cheese and savoury platters, wine tasting eve-nings and evening entertainment. We want to provide a cosmopolitan evening atmosphere for our many customers who have often men-tioned the need for such a thing. We also want to provide a nice, ac-cessible space for young families so as one of our new café programme of events; we are introducing Morning Shorts storytelling sessions.What would you hope to introduce in the future?I’d hope to have more events in the café space, reflecting the differing activities that go on in the building, and I feel this would appeal to a broader spectrum of visitors, providing food for both body and mind

Frank, tell us a little bit about yourself and the lovely cafe staffWell, the café team consists of myself, café assistants David and Teresa and our volunteers Sergio and Eoghan who have joined us through the TÚS scheme and are learning everything there is to know about café service and production. Collectively we have many years experience in food service and strive to provide the very best in customer service!

The RUA RED Pop Up Shop is an exciting new venture that will take place in the RUA RED foyer area. Featuring the best of cutting edge Irish designer produce, the pop up shop will include a wide variety of products, from affordable gifts and collectibles to high end furniture and prints.

The designers showcased are a mix of invited individuals as well as designers and craftmakers who can submit their designs for inclusion via the RUA RED website. This has resulted in an exciting and varied ever changing selection from the best and brightest in the business.

INKED UP

HB: Who are you? / What are you all about?IU: We are a graphic design led creative agency. We offer our clients a professional graphic design service, focusing on innovative and highly creative solutions. We specialise in logo design and branding; it’s one of our favorite briefs. We also love to design brochures, packaging, point of sale & exhibition graphics and signage. We love to work on outdoor events and trade shows, and have quite a reputation for design and signage displays at outdoor sports events Outdoor adventure graphics is something we get really exceited about because it has a lot of creative freedom.

HB: What are you working on right now?IU: We have just finished working on all the marketing material for a growing Adventure Race & Brand. This included the designing and print management of brochures, fliers, t-shirts, banners, outdoor signage, flags and maps for the event. As if all of this wasn’t enough, we actually participated in the event and won 1st Team!

HB: How did you get into this line of work? IU: I was always into drawing as a kid and my school books where always full of doodles. I excelled in art, so it was just a natural progresssion to study Design in college. And I never really liked Maths so accountancy wasn’t on the cards. At the time of my leaving certificate, the design industry was booming. There was so many advancements and breakthroughs happening in digital technology, it was a really exciting time. I had the best of both worlds in college - the old school traditional design methods and the constantly evolving computers and design software.

HB: What is a normal day in your studio like?IU: There is no such thing as a normal day in the office really…no two days are ever the same! We cover such a broad spectrum of media sometimes we might not be in the studio at all. For instance we could be out doing a signage survey for a client one day or delivering a presentation of concepts for a brief, and then back in the office working on a website or marketing campaign the next.

HB: What are some of your favourite projects you’ve worked on? All of our outdoor adventure branding and designing for our client Total Experience. A Signage Design and Installation project for Russborough House which included working on the new 3 D interactive Muesum, which was amazing to be part of. We were also selected by the Board of Management and Trustess from the Alfred Beit Foundation to present a new identity concept for Russborough House & 3D Museum contending with a massive creative agency also selected from Edinburgh which was a big honor and achievement, and really boosted our confidence at the time as a young and upcoming creative agency.

HB: Have you ever worked with any famous people? IU: Yes we have worked with Keith Duffy from Boyzone while we where working on the marketing materials for the charity Autism Ireland. For more info on up and coming campaigns vist autism Ireland.com. Also, Kathryn Thomas who helped launch one of the events we worked on ‘DARE’ in aid of Childline. We were also introduced to the Minister for Arts and Education at the Launch of the 3D exhibition at Russborough!

HB: Any upcoming projects you want to plug?IU: Yes...we will be updating our website in 2013 and lauching a new marketing campaign in the area so please keep an eye on www.inkedup.ie to see it first!
