ut for as long as Bennett has been an attorney,

he’s been a musician for even longer. Music, for

him, has been a lifetime endeavor. “ I came from a

musical family over at Holdenville. My father came

here from the Ozarks, he was an old-time fiddle-

player. He came to Eastern Oklahoma from the

Ozarks and his brother, my uncle Will, they played

together,” said Bennett. “ My uncle Will and my

brother were guitar players, and my brother-in-law,

who’s still living, Melvin Swinehard in Holdenville,

they taught me to play and started me out on the

guitar at a very early age. They used to sing at

grade schools. I always yearned to play with some

of the musicians that would come to

my house from time to time and play

with my brother.”

Bennett received more advanced

training on the guitar after his brother

returned from World War II. From

there he studied under a guitar player

in Oklahoma City for around a year.

Bennett prefers to play out of the

Great American Songbook. “It’s what

I like,” he said. “ I started out with

Irving Berlin, with Alexander’s Ragtime

Band. I think that was originally

around 1912, but the early 1920s,

1930s, up to the present time. A lot

of it is standards, some of it is jazz.

All the music comes out of Broadway.

Broadway plays.

‘Showboat,’ and all

those great songs

by the Gershwins,

and Rogers and

Hammerstein, Cole

Porter. Those are

the songs that I

really like more that

probably anything.

“ When I was

going to East Central,

I played in Austin

Kidwell’s band, he

was a band director

here at Ada high,

and served also

other places. He

had a band here when I came to East Central, and

I started playing with him. It was fun. He was well-

known and a good musician. We had a dance band

there, and we played all over in this part of the state,

some on KTEN. When KTEN first opened up in

1954, I was employed out there to kind of head up

the talent show and play the guitar in the afternoon

program. Everything was ‘live’ then, they didn’t

have the video instruments that they have today.

And so I played the guitar on the afternoon program,

it was a challenge. And then I ran the camera at

night time. That was 1955, before I went to law

school.”

Today, Bennett still plays with an assortment

of groups and musicians. “There’s a group here,

they’ve been active for a few years, by the name

of Saint Cecilia Jazz Society,” he said. “It was put

together by George Gurley, who used to be with

the Ada Evening News. George Gurley and Bob

Parr. Joe Pryor was in it, Rossi McCurdy was in it

and I was in it. We had a lot of fun. I continue to

stay in good practice

and play some. I

don’t have time to

play as much as I

would like to, but

I’ve been playing the

guitar and it’s been a

lifetime avocation for me. A lifetime endeavor, so to

speak.”In fact, Bennett said it’s often been a

challenge to find the time to do

everything he does. Beyond practicing law and

pursuing his love of music, he was chairman of the

Pontotoc County Democratic Party for sixteen years,

even greeting then-presidental candidates Jimmy

Carter and Lloyd Bentsen at the local airport. He’s

also been a member of the Ada Rotary Club since

1961, and in that time has served both as president

and as a member of the board of directors. He’s a

lifetime member

of the United Way,

and was chairman

of the American

Cancer Society

for four years. He

served on the draft

board during the Vietnam War, often making tough

decisions on who qualified as a having a hardship

and was therefore not eligible for military service.

He also serves on the ECU Journal board along

with Ada Evening News publisher Lone´ Beasley. If

Bennett were to try and frame his accomplishments

over the past fifty years, to hang certificates and

medals and memories on his walls, it’s a sure bet

those walls would closely resemble the piles

of paperwork and folders that currently

encircle the office. They’d

be just as full, just as

impressive.

“I will stay in the civic

projects I’ve been involved with

since I’ve been practicing law, lawyers

often tend to get involved in community

affairs,” he said, smiling. “I’ve found

no conflict of interests in that. It’s

been a pleasure.”
