NATIONAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Howdy brothers and sisters, it’s July and that means Independence Day; The fireworks, BBQ and the weekend get-togethers to celebrate our country’s birthday. This year’s convention is going to be here in Kokomo and we are excited to have you all here. We hope that all who come will enjoy themselves and leave with fond memories. For those who can not make it, we will miss you and hope to see you soon. I look at my life as a book, and in my book I have written many chapters. I have joined the military and during that time I lived in the northeast. I became a certified scuba diver. I have done live civic theater for over 25 years, and I have been a certified flight instructor since 1998. But the chapter that was written during the last 6 years, as your national officer, is one that I feel has been rewarding. I hope during my time of service I contributed to the fraternity, and, as I said last year, I hope I lead from the “Chair,” not just occupied it. There were some things I wish I could have done differently, but if I could have looked into the future, I would have picked lotto numbers anyway. As I put an end to this chapter of my life, I look forward to starting the next one, and I know Phi Delta Kappa will be a part of it. You know how easy it is to write a life book when the base of it is a great family, so thanks to Candie, and my family, for putting up with my adventures. As I go out, new officers come in and it is their time to shine. And it’s time for the new National President to sit in the big “Chair”, to take the reins and lead us into the next year, for he is the one people will go to for guidance, and he is the PRESIDENT of Phi Delta Kappa. The only advice I can give to the other officers is: If you have something that you want to do during your time in office, don’t wait till you’re president, one year is not enough time to get things done. I would like to say thanks to PNP Jon Handy, PNP Greg Sumpter, PNP Jim Myers, PNP Jim Cressman and PNP Devin Reid for being my mentors. I need to thank my sponsor Willie Williams, for he is the reason that I joined Phi Delta Kappa in the first place. I want to thank PNP Craig Brutout because we started this journey together and for being a friend. Thanks to Sam Agresti, Chris Parks, Jeff Woolf, Greg Trombly, Chris Linsinbigler, and Bruce Smith. A president is only as good as the people that are around him. All of this could not have happened if not for the support of Kokomo’s Beta Nu. Thank you for having faith in me. I don’t think there has been a president that didn’t use resources and knowledge of our National Treasurer and PNP Jim Cressman, much appreciation is warranted there. Most of all, thanks and love to my wife Candie for all of the late nights and all of the articles that she has proofread for me, I couldn’t have done it without her support. I hope I didn’t miss anyone. Hug a brother and kiss a sister. See you at convention!

Sam Agresti

National Vice President

Hello from sunny South Florida. This is our last magazine be-fore conven-tion so first of

al I would like to thank Brian Nelson for being our President this past year. Brian will always be a true friend and one of the most dedicated brothers PDK will ever see. Good luck as our new-est PNP. Also to all my SEC broth-ers, your hard work this year helped keep the ship afloat and good luck in the coming year. To our sweetheart Diana Dull, thanks for your hardwork in representing our fraternity with the class and dignity it deserves. We all are proud of you.

I'm going to talk a little about starting new. We all, at times, say this phrase, "starting a new phase in my life." Well this is happening with me. I will test the waters of being retired after being a educator and coach for 40 years. No early mornings, no student problems to deal with and above all no more educational jargon that I surely will not miss hearing again. I will say that this career I chose was rewarding and played a major part of my life. I do plan to volunteer as a coach from time to time. But no more practices, late dinners, taking ath-letes home, a lot of travel for meets and above all no more stress whether you win or lose. This fall when the season

PHI DELTA KAPPA MAGAZINE 4

comes around, we’ll see if I get the itch to go back. I'm retiring to be able to be home more than I ever have been. My wife just retired also from education and we will be celebrating our 40th Anniversary this month. This will be the biggest challenge for me because I'm al-ways on the go.

This month hopefully another new beginning for me will be elected your new National President. I wish to have the support of my PDK family in this endeavor. As I have gone through the chairs

watching past PNP's run our fraternity, this knowledge will guide me in the coming year. It is a great honor and I will do my very best to

uphold the tradition of this office as my predecessors have done. I will use and old coaching saying of mine "A fist is a lot stronger than a open hand with fingers spread out". PDK would be a lot stronger body if the SEC, Board of Trustees and our chapters band as one to make this be the best fraternity it could possibly be. As I embark on some new begin-nings in my life, I chal-lenge chap-ters and their officers to have a great year ahead. Try new activities, recruit new members that will become great brothers someday and instill brotherhood when traveling to other chapters. I hope to see many new faces this year so lookout for me in my travels. In closing this year has gone by fast and I hope next year will be not be so fast, so I can enjoy the ride.

H e l l o B r o t h e r s and Sweet-hearts! Convention is upon us!

Well according to Brother Bruce in last month’s article the chapter with more varieties of soda pop than beer is ready! But that’s al-right, the Brothers at Beta Eta have those multipurpose coolers, you know, the ones that are as big as coffins, one of the many rea-sons there always ready to face any adversity. A trait all Phi Delts strive to attain: the ability to adapt and overcome. Whether they are internal or external issues we face at our chapter houses, we face them head on and overcome the situation and continue to grow. The chapters who are struggling with membership should take a good hard look at their internal issues and address them so they don’t go by the wayside. There is no benefit to a chapter or the fra-ternity as a whole to lose a chap-

ter. Since I’ve been in the chairs I have been to every chapter multiple times, the large

chapters and the small and in every one of them I’ve been asked the same question, “What is the national doing for us?” It’s actually a rather interesting ques-tion, when you break it down and look at it. To the average member it looks like we do nothing. That’s what I thought, and I struggled with that same question when I first became a national officer, we

“A fist is a lot

stronger than a open

hand with fingers

spread out.”

“What is the national

doing for us?”

Page 5: July 2013 · NATIONAL OFFICERS 2012 - 2013 CHAPTER PRESIDENT OF THE YEAR 2012 - Chris Linsinbigler, 14659 Paradise Trail , Loxahatchee, FL 33470 Tel: (561)282-6679

really can’t have any direct effect on a chapter. We can’t tell a chapter who to elect in their chairs, how to run the chapter house on a day to day basis. We can only make sug-gestion that they have the choice to either accept or reject, It’s entirely up to them. So then what is it that we do? Well I tell all new officers we write articles in hopes that somebody reads them, and we try to mentor and motivate the chapters that we coordinate. We make chap-ter visits and leave thinking what a great job there doing and occasion-ally wish we had the authority to make some changes especially when we see a chapter being stran-gled by its leadership.

That brings us back to the many articles I and others have written about the importance of changing the local officers and the trap chap-ters who are struggling fall into. It’s the definition of insanity doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Wake up brothers. In that scenario, the only thing that will change is the number of chapters we have. As national officers ,we can make a difference. We strive to bring to the struggling chapters the things the larger chapters are doing in hopes it might help. Now we understand that what works in one chapter might not work in another chapter, but brotherhood works in all chap-ters. As I’ve been traveling around the fraternity, there has been one constant that I see. Chapter houses that are open four or more days a week have more members. That leads one to only one conclusion “You cannot have brotherhood if nobody's home!” 98% of humans have a need to bond and be in the presence of other humans, the other 2%, are loners, not in need of other

humans in their lives. Look at the chairs. You might be in need to do a little replacing in order to meet that basic need of more members to bond with.

“How will my actions today re-flect on our fraternity tomorrow?”

zen of the United States of Amer-ica, not just on this day, but each day of each year. I hope you are too.

As a fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa ends the fraternal year this month as well. We gather together in a given location, convene for two meetings to make changes to our constitution, if they are decided to be necessary, and elect the officers we want to lead us through the next twelve months. We celebrate the advances we have made in the previous twelve months and honor those among us we find worthy of honor-ing. All in all, it is a fairly produc-tive 3 days for the fraternity.

This year, I will be seeking the of-fice of Master Of Ceremonies. I once again have been given the backing of my home chapter to run for this office. I thank them for their trust and support. I know it seems

as if it is an auto-matic progression through the offices. I truly wish that were not the case. I would love to see more than one per-son wanting to hold each office. Simply put, that would

show a greater interest in what our fraternity is doing and who is lead-ing us there.

Recent times have shown, though, that we have trouble filling the one chair that is vacated annually by our outgoing president. If you really think about that, it will sadden those who care for this fraternity and want it to endure for another 100 years. Come celebrate with us in Kokomo and get involved.

Greetings Brothers and Sweethearts!

Happy 4th of July; One of my favorite holidays. I loved it as a kid. I love it as an adult. Warm weather, cookouts, and fireworks. How could it get any better? I guess I just enjoy watching things explode nearly as much these days as I used to like making things ex-plode.

BANG !!

We celebrate our inde-pendence from British rule; The birth of this great nation we call ours. Many of us do not realize the freedoms we enjoy just by being born here. Freedoms our forefathers made undeniable by adding them di-rectly to the governing document of this country, our constitution. We are able to be members of this fraternity because our constitution gives us that right; Freedom to assemble and the freedom to meet in secret. We are able to read this publication because they gave us the freedom of speech. There are many other freedoms that many of us take for granted, day in and day out. I am very thankful to be a citi-

The next morning I drove over to Gamma Theta in Danville. There I met many brothers and sisters. Rhonda and Steve greeted me, showed me the new hall renova-tions, and all the work they have done. Gamma Theta has been very busy. They cut down some trees and will have firewood for some time. Gamma Theta lost a well re-spected member Gregory Alan Scott {Scotty}. They hosted a cele-bration of his life which was very well attended and showed us all what true brotherhood was about! Farewell my brother. I then started my long journey home.

Back at MS Alpha we had a craw-fish boil. The cooking was excellent and everything came together to be a two day event. Maybe this will

be our event set into the calen-dar for years to come! July Fourth is Independence

Day and many chapter will have events planned. It’s a time we should thank God that we are Americans. I am thankful that I am a Phi Delt.

July brings our National Conven-tion at Beta Nu in Kokomo. I will run for the office of National Audi-tor and hope for your continued support. I hope to get to know more of my brothers and sisters in Kokomo. I urge everyone who can attend to do so. Visiting another chapter house is a true adventure in brotherhood.

Fly your Flag on the 4th and every-day! Remember, if it is to be, it is up to me!

God Bless America!

Sergeant at Arms

Welcome from the Hospitality Chapter MS Al-pha! Northern Dis-trict has come and gone.

I arrived at Winchester, IN, Beta Eta, 7:45 PM, for the start of North-ern District. At the Chapter house were Brother Scott Dull and our National Sweetheart Diane, Jeff and Brenda Woolf, and Posh and Jan Keen.

After a good welcome, Brother Dull pointed out their display of memo-rabilia from other chapters, to be reunited at convention time. Our three red dogs from MS Alpha were stand-ing tall and being well taken care of. The next morning we had fel-lowship and the meeting followed. It was well attended and our Presi-dent, Brian Nelson, said he would like to see each chapter sponsor an event at the same time each year. Like Gamma Theta in Danville, they have a Hog Roast every year on the 3rd week of September. Other chapters have other things going on. But having a calendar event that is the same time every year would mean better planning and attendance. After our meeting we adjourned and retuned that eve-ning. We then had a great dinner followed by entertainment and Beta Eta Downs, The Kentucky Derby, it was great fun. I then said good night to all and returned to the Ho-tel.

Chris Linsinbigler

National Inner Guard

Hello again from the Flag-ship of the South! Hope every-body had a wonderful Me-morial Day holiday. Remembering and honoring all those who serve and who have served. It really makes me proud to be an American. I love the quote "All gave some, some gave all.” It makes one appre-ciate the freedom we all enjoy. Without the sacrifices of the few to protect our way of life and the con-stitution guaranteeing all of our rights. I feel that each of us, as Americans, should exercise these rights. As our National Council meeting convenes this year in Kokomo, we as PHI DELTS can prove that this system works by at-tending the meetings, voting for our leaders, and voting for any changes to the Constitution of our fraternity, as well as, enjoying the brotherhood and the whole fraternal family and friends. I always look forward to National Convention; To see old friends and make new ones and to make memo-ries I know will last a lifetime. I hope to continue my journey through the chairs, by being voted to be National Sergeant at Arms. I will strive to continue to learn from my fellow officers, past and pre-sent, PNP'S and many others I con-sider mentors. I hope to be worthy of their trust. I look at each chair not only as a learning post, but also one that comes with great responsibility. By

I Hate to Keep Bugging You, But

Are You Coming?

Bruce Smith

National Outer Guard

I am of course referring to The National Con-vention. Are you coming (or are you here al-ready)? I sure hope so. I would greatly appreciate your vote for my run at National Inner Guard. I want to extend a great big thank you to all my brothers for a great first year for me in “the chairs”. We Phi Delts sure know how to have a good time. This gets proven any-time we get together. Even the dreaded but necessary work details are fun when you have brothers around to help share the load. The comments that come out of some broth-ers’ mouths when we get together can sure bring a chuckle or even full-fledged gut wrenching laughter. Fellowship among men sure can be a strange lovely beast. The odd places that men’s conversations can sometimes end up would scare most women and are definitely not for young chil-dren’s ears. That is part of what makes us men. The dirty, grimy, gathering providers of the human race can be rude, crude and socially unacceptable at times. We hopefully apologize every time when we forget that we are not just among other men (heck even then sometimes the line gets crossed). I am told at times that I don’t just step over the line but I

Superman (my sister-in-law’s term) over it. I try to behave but sometimes I just forget my audience. Our society has been through many changes since this fraternity was started on the schoolhouse steps in Marion Indiana back in 1902. There are things that we say or do in mod-ern times that would have had us banned or barred from cer-tain events (or secret societies) back in the old days. We still need to hold our women in the highest regard and respect. I know that in these modern times that many woman can and do take on what were once tra-ditionally male roles. God bless them all! One thing that we may have more of today than our ances-tors is FREEDOM. Sometimes this extra freedom is a good

thing while other times it is not. We are free to move about the USA almost at will. You can just

get in your motorized vehicle and drive to wherever you want, or take a train, a bus, or fly to your destination. Granted we may be searched at the airport (in 1902 planes were not even around) prior to heading to our destination. In my opinion too many people abuse our earned freedoms and this generates laws and restrictions on what the rest of us can freely do. Just look at what one or two or ten troubled people recently caused in the purchase and ownership of guns. I believe that evil is evil and these evil jerks will al-

“We Phi Delts sure

know how to have a

good time. ”

doing my best, I can only hope to my journey through the chairs. Have you made your reserva-tions yet? Have you sent your registration in yet? You have to be there to fully experience all that comes with the convention. To me it is well worth the "price of admission". From the opening meeting to the Bar-B-Q, the skits, the golf outing, the hospi-tality room, Friday night’s Presi-dent's Ball, the Awards Cere-mony, all the hugs from all the sweethearts, as well as the ones from the brothers. Like I said, "you just have to be there". I want to wish everybody safe travels to and from Beta Nu, Kokomo. Have you made your Reservation?

Before we all converge on Kokomo, we get the chance to celebrate another on of my fa-vorite holidays, Independence Day, a day of family and friends. I hope that all of our service men and women will be home to cele-brate with theirs families very soon. On a personal note, I know that I keep preaching on the need to travel. So, thanks to the support of my brothers at FL-NU, on June 10th, I will be making a trip north, starting at Beta-Nu, Kokomo, for their business meeting on Monday night and then on to Beta Eta Winches-ter on Tuesday night. So, if you're in the neighborhood, I would love to see you there. If not, I'll see you in July at Na-tional Convention. Thank-You!

Road to Civil War

PNP Jon Handy

The compromise of 1850 was the beginning of the end for the Whig party and split it down the middle between the Northern Whigs (anti-slavery) and the Southern Whigs (pro-slavery). The Whig Party had experienced bitter factionalism throughout its existence, and paled in party loyalty when contrasted with the strong party discipline of

the Democratic Party organiza-tion. The North was distraught over the com-promise that was reached in

congress to continue slavery, and the Whigs split into two disparate factions. The Whigs in the South joined the short-lived American Party, and the Whigs of the North started a new anti-slave party which they called the Republican Party. Abraham Lincoln returned to his Legal Practice in Illinois where this new party, which saw “the expan-sion of slavery as a great evil,” was being organized. They held their first convention in 1854, and by 1858 became the predominant party in nearly all the Northern states. Their slogan was “free labor, free land, free men.” Free labor referred to their opposition to slave labor. “Free land implied their opposition to a plantation system where the rich could buy up all the good farm-land and work it with slaves. And Free men implied that every citizen of our country is indeed free and deserving of equality. Lincoln won the party’s nomination in 1860, and was elected President in the follow-ing election that same year.

While all this was happening, Dred

Scott was petitioning the courts in St Louis for freedom. Scott was a slave of the Peter Blow family. After the Blows moved to St. Louis, Scott was sold to Dr. John Emerson, a military surgeon who traveled to many posts in Illinois and Wisconsin. Scott stayed with the doctor, assisting him during his travels to these slave-free states. Dred was married at this time to his wife, Harriet, and they had two children who also traveled with them.

Upon returning to St. Louis, Dred Scott became dissatisfied when Dr. Emerson died, and Mrs. Emerson began hiring out Scott and his family to neighbors and friends. Scott enlisted the help of his minister and the Blow family in filing a petition with the St. Louis courts for his freedom. Scott lost the first trial on presenta-tion of hearsay evidence, but was allowed to refile their suit in the St. Louis Circuit court. This jury found that Dred Scott and his family should be free. Mrs. Emerson appealed the case to the Missouri State Supreme Court which reversed the ruling in 1852 and returned the family to slavery. This reversal prompted Scott to appeal his case to the US Supreme Court.

Seven of the nine US Supreme Court judges were slave owners themselves. They ruled that not only was Dred Scott a slave, but as a slave, he had no right to bring suit in the federal courts on any matter. The court also ruled that the Missouri Compro-mise of 1820, which prohibited slavery in the northern territo-

ways find a method to carry out their evil. Long before there were guns available to almost anyone society had sticks, rocks, ropes, swords, arrows and poison. Granted guns can surely speed up the process of the evil. To remain free we must fight for our freedom. “Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose,” Janis Joplin sang these words written by Kris Kristofferson (as did he) in the hip-pie era song “Me and Bobbie McGee”. Free love (with crabs and VD) was slightly before my time. The hippies wanted all types of free-dom from almost all rules and regu-lations. Too bad that would never work since somebody will always abuse the lack of rules to their per-sonal advantage and not to societies benefit. Freedom is power and power can take away freedom.

In 1776 our great nation’s founding fathers were tired of the tyranny from the King of England and taxa-tion without representation. So Thomas Jefferson was asked to draft the Declaration of Independ-ence by those in political power in the colonies. His words written in this document have been used to build and tear apart (the Civil War) and build again our great country. God Bless America and Happy

Birthday to our Great Na-tion!

Until next time please remember to

tell your sweetheart that you love her every single day and to hug a brother. Proud to be an American and a Phi Delta Kappa!

PNP Stretch Orr

Greetings from the Flagship of the South. Its been a while since I writ-ten an article, but there is a reason for it. If you need to know, call me and I'll give you details. Had two winners at Queen of Hearts, but it was not me. Sorry I missed every-one at our last function, but work and leg problems tend to be very bothersome, even missed Bonco at Florida Mu, which I never do. Writ-ing this at the pool, swimming helps my therapy, sunshine, 90 de-grees, pool 85, life in sunny south Florida is tough.

Tough times this week, all three of my vehicles broke down in two days. A nightmare to say the least. I called upon two brothers (you know who you are), fixed and repaired same day, including towing. I offered to pay for gas and towing but my but my brothers refused (I didn't have the money anyway)! But when a brother is in need, a brother will arise to help an-other. Thanks brothers. Hope I can make it to convention this year, the past two were unat-tendable due to leg injury, miss seeing eve-r y o n e . Meetings at Nu have been well a t t e n d e d lately and most of our new members have been very active. Sometimes it takes a spark like that to re-ignite the fire we all had when we first joined, like a smolder-ing fire, the heat is there, but not the fire. Hope to open up a few doors that I had closed and sponsor a few functions like karaoke night, horse racing, ga-rage sale, etcetera. Time to go, starting to rain, but in Florida., wait 10 minutes and the weather will change. If you're standing in line at the airport, and the person in front of you is going to LA, and the person behind is going to NY, Where are you going? If you don't know, why are you standing in line? Always hug a brother and a sweetheart!

ries, was unconstitutional. There-fore, even though Scott lived in northern territories, he had not earned his freedom.

The Abolitionists and Republicans were enraged by this decision and feared that this case would set a precedent for all slaves, and slavery would spread unchecked. Dred Scott was later returned to the Blow Family when Mrs. Emerson remar-ried, and the Blow Family gave them their freedom in 1857. Dred Scott died of tuberculosis just a year later and was buried in St. Louis never knowing what a hor-nets nest he had whacked.

On September 17, 1862 the Confed-erate Army of North Virginia, led my General Robert E. Lee, attacked the North at Antietam, MD in Washington County. President Lin-coln offered the remaining Southern States the opportunity to rejoin the North. When they unanimously re-jected his offer he issued the Eman-cipation Proclamation and the war was on – the bloodiest battle ever on American soil.

Hello From The Sweetheart

Diana Dull

National Sweetheart

Hello from the National Sweet-heart, better known as “the Girl-friend”. National Sweetheart Tour 2012(13) continues! Well, I know it has been awhile and things have definitely been hopping around the Dull Ranch so let me get caught up!

The Beta Eta Anniversary was wonderful as usual! We had a good turnout. Many were recognized for their years in Phi Delta Kappa. Coach did another outstanding job

as MC for the event and kept us l augh ing as usual! The Phi Delt of the year award was given

to Rob Whitted. The rookie of the year award was given to our “camera” man, Dennis Reese. Wish you could have all seen the surprise on his face! It was much deserved! Our National Outer Guard Bruce Smith and his wife Sarah from Kokomo were in atten-dance. Ladies’ President Brenda Woolf gave a speech about the la-dies club and all that had been ac-complished in the past year. We are very proud of our accomplish-ments! They surprised me with a charm to add to my bracelet! I was so surprised! We all had a great time!

Even though we weren’t traveling to different chapters, it seemed like life did not slow down any for Scott and me. In May, we traveled to Valparaiso for Kristin’s college graduation from Radiology School! We are so proud of her! We trav-eled to Fort Wayne to see Katy’s first communion at St. Jude’s, there were 72 second graders by the way!

golf tourney is after that and I never miss that!

I realize that this has been a lot of personal stuff and hope that it does-n’t offend you that I shared it. I feel all of you are an extended part of my family and that I can share my joys with you! As my reign as Na-tional Sweetheart comes to an end, I again want to tell you what an honor it has been for me! I have made so many new friends and many more memories throughout this year! I can never express how grateful I am for the experience that I have had and if you have not heard me say it before, I will say it again, THANK-YOU! I look for-ward to seeing each and everyone of you in Kokomo for Convention! It will be bittersweet as I will turn over the crown to the next lucky lady you chose for Na-tional Sweetheart but will become part of a great group of ladies known as PNS’s!

I thank Beta Eta for supporting me throughout this year, especially Jeff, Brenda, Todd and Christina. They were almost always traveling with us throughout the year and made for “exceptional” road trips! Last but definitely not least, I must thank the person who is there for me through all the ups and downs, the happy and the sad, the crazy and the insane, my husband, Scott Dull! You are more than I could ever hope for! I will see you all in July and until then be safe and have a great summer!

It was a beautiful ceremony and Katy was absolutely adorable! That was the first week of May! Work decided to precedent the second week for a conference. On week three we traveled back to Fort Wayne for Cody’s graduation from Indiana Tech in Software Engineer-ing! We are very proud of him as well! And he starts his new job the first of June! After enjoying a meal with them we headed to Kokomo for Candie’s surprise 50th birthday party. She was definitely surprised! She received lots of neat gifts and there was plenty of food and fun. Brian had a band there as well. Reid’s and Leach’s came from Danville and Woolf’s, Rhonemus, and Gullet’s joined us from Win-chester. We had a great time! There might have even been some of the guys singing at the mikes af-ter the band was done, what a hoot! Todd, Christina, Scott and I stayed with Bruce and Sarah Smith for the evening! Thanks for the hospitality Bruce and Sarah!

We had absolutely no plans for Me-morial Day! Yeah! We worked at home most of the weekend trying to get garden planted and the yard and flower beds in shape. We did hit the PDK to watch the Indianapolis 500, what a race! The rest of the weekend was spent on projects at home.

As I write this we have had a free weekend to start June. We spent some time with the kids and the grandkids. Seems like life is so busy that when I get a chance I just want to enjoy the simple things! Next week things get busy again with Katy’s dance recital and the following will be Kristin’s wed-ding! Guess I’m not supposed to sit still too long, LOL! The Beta Eta

Cracker Country

PNP Dave Rieker

Hello again from Cracker Coun-try. We lost a very good friend and fellow Phi Delt the other day. Robert Delisle passed away. Most of you didn’t know Bob Delisle. He wasn’t a national figure with Phi Delta Kappa, however he has been a Phi Delt for over 50 years. Bob’s been in Florida longer than I’ve been alive and he wasn’t even born here and I was. He knew Tampa like the back of his hand. Give him an address and he could tell you what kind of build-ings are there. I‘ve know Bob for over 50 years from when he worked at a machine company on

Grand Cen-tral Avenue before it be-came Ken-nedy Blvd. I didn‘t know then that Bob was a Phi

Delt. Later after I was initiated into PDK we happened to be in the same chapter. Bob was a dedi-cated Phi Delt. He was admired and respected by everyone. Not long after joining the club, I men-tioned to Bob that he was pro-nouncing his name wrong. It should be pronounced Delissel. That was not a good idea.

Not long after joining PDK. I be-gan to realize why everyone ad-mired and respected Bob. He was a giver. Not only his time but he shared his home every year by throwing a lake party. He gave us his knowledge as a journeyman machinist and mechanic too. When our club decided to expand our chapter house, we turned to Bob. And what an expansion it

was. He almost tripled the square footage of the building. With a full service kitchen, a large meet-ing room all air-conditioned and a barbeque area under roof. All this from a poorly ventilated one room meeting hall. When any-thing needed fixing we turned to Bob. Bob served our country in WW2 as a SEABEE. He didn’t elabo-rate much about his service but he did mention the name, Guadalca-nal, once and that was enough for me. Every now and then I would joke with Bob about our federal authorities ordering Bob back to some forgotten Pacific island to

fix a pontoon bridge that he built had sunk. He’d say something like, “No way.” Bob had a good appetite too. Occasionally at club we would be having a dinner so-cial and when the MC would an-nounce “Dinner is served,” Bob would already be finished eating. Not long ago Bob came to club and entered our 50/50 drawing. To get in you have to donate one dollar. He had to leave before they drew the winning number because he didn’t want to drive at night so he handed me his ticket. So he won $6.00. Well, I col-lected the money for him and later the next day I called him and told he won. So he said “Write

me a check and mail it to me.” What a guy! Go with GOD, Robert Delisle, you are greatly missed. Now for fiction and fact from the Phi Delt Almanac. A group of mental giants were needed to un-ravel some of the English lan-guage logic. It didn’t take very long to single out a group of Phi Delts to do the study. It didn’t take very long to uncover one of our blips. Why is the place you drive on called a PARKWAY and the place you park on a DRIVE-WAY? So be well and full of h#$$. Cracker Boy signing off.
