From the EditorIn just a few months, I will be in my third year doing my dissertation and my final major. It shows how time files, and how you should enjoy every single moment of your life. This month is filled with the usual contet. I speak to Amira about her love for make up (Page 42) and gives me a few tips. Miss Janelle Monae is under the spolight this month with her funky puffy hairstyle. Urban Knit’s creater Dolapo gives five mintues of her time and talks about her creations (Page 20). Fashionista takes a trip to the Soho Theatre (Page 38). There are some treats to take as it’s strawberry season, so enjoy the summer and see you next month.

5 minutes With...

UrbanknitUrbanknit is a small independent label creating handmade accessories for those with a taste for something different. They have a collection of hand knitted scarves and bags in all shapes and sizes. Dolapo the 30-year-old from Nigeria talks about her label and what is has achieved so far.

When and why did you decide to have your own online store?I have had an online shop for quite a few years, the decision was based on the fact that there is a potential to reach a much wider audience. Having an online store makes it possible to have an international customer base.

How long has UrbanKnit beenrunning for?Urbanknit started as a kind of hobby so has existed in some form for about 10 years, but became more formal as a business just under 4 years ago.

What interested you to go into knitting and designing?I have always had an interest in making things; my mum taught me how to knit when I was very young, so it went on from there. I am also trained as an architect so designing and making feels natural to me.

Which items have been the best sells? This depends on the season but the XL neckwarmer seems to be a best seller in the winter.

Out of all the products you have designed, which is your favourite and why?It is so hard to pick a favourite.I really do enjoy making all the things I make. Once in a while, there will be a particular combination that I just love or sometimes there will be a particular fabric that I prefer using. I once had a very unique batik bought in Lagos from a shop that no longer exists so the fabric is truly a limited edition. Anything I make out of this particular fabric, I end up falling in love with.

What is your favourite season for fashion? I think it has to be Autumn/Winter because you can do so many interesting things with layers.Images: Courtesy of UrbanKnit

Where do you get your inspirations for your designs? From anything and anywhere, I have what some would say was an eclectic taste in music, movies, art, architecture, tv and so on and in some way I believe these influence what I do. People watching is also very interesting!

What is the most difficult aspect of running your own label? It would have to be advertising and gaining awareness. In order for people to appreciate your work they have to know that it exists in the first place. Its not so much a problem as it a challenge that I am always looking for new ways to address.

Are there any upcoming projects that you would like to share? I am always looking for new ways to experiment and currently looking into incorporating more interesting fabrics especially Aso-oke and leather so watch this space!

Nigerians are being more fashionable and creative, which Nigerian designers stick out in your mind for being the best? They are so many interesting designers these days and the innovation and creativeness is really quite impressive. I am going to be boring and go with Deola Sagoe because her work is outstanding and I get the sense that quality and finishing are immaculate. I also recently saw some work by Lola Faturoti and thought wow. The fact that their work is not just ‘Nigerian’ but are of a standing and quality that is universal.

Where do you see yourself in the next couple of years?I hope and pray that I will still be doing what I am doing but better and bigger with a wider audience. My goal is to be stocked by interesting and funky boutiques all over the world!

In London Town Future FashionV&A22 May 2009 - 31 January 2010This is one of the most exciting events at the V&A this summer, as various MA fashion graduates from the Royal College of Art showcase their work at the Future Fashion exhibition. This event reveals aspects of the design process and has lead to graduates working at fashion houses such as Vivienne Westwood, Chole, Dior, Ossie Clark and Burberry. Over 55 outfits and accessories from 27 designers will be displayed in four main sections:Concept-looks at the main ideas and inspiration behind the graduates work.

Form- examines how the designers transform their ideas into 3-D garments, by experimenting with materials and cut.

Technique-shows how graduates create their work, by using both traditional and advanced methods such as laser cutting, rapid protyping, and digital printing.

Detail- demonstrates how to customise fastenings, jewelled embellishment and decorative stitching.

Drawings, design boards, and photographs will be on display to show the process of their garments from start to finish.

It’s time to get your head in the game at the most exciting tournament in the world. Wimbledon has the most talented players, competing head to head with over 450,000 people watching from the stadium stands. The event starts six weeks before the first Monday in August, and lasts for roughly a fortnight. Wimbledon’s first event began back in 1877 by the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet with 22 male players. In 1884, the Ladies’ Singles and Men’s Doubles was introduced. The first British superstar players were British twins Ernest and William Renshaw. They won over 13 titles between 1881 and 1889.

Iya lle (First Wife)

This theatre production isn’t your typical storyline where the characters are ‘jazzed’ by herbalists or in the hospital with no funds to take care of the treatment. Iya Ile takes you on a journey to Nigeria back in 1980s to a family called the Adeyemis. Chief Adeyemi and his wife Toyin, have two sons and live in Lagos. Toyin is cur-rently planning her 40th birthday party. However, everything is not what is seems as their sons who have returned home from college and have become exposed to all sorts of things including seduction. There is the house girl Helen who is dreaming of a better life. Her ideal home is a duplex, garden, swimming pool, and a car with a driver. As the story went on, the situation become worse and the once close knit family has now ceased, with the wife leaving the house and the house girl being with the husband. There were the usual antics of typical Nigeria behaviour which included the armed robbers and the native attires worn by the actors. I loved the choreography performance at the end of each scene with music played by Sunny Ade and Fela Kuti. Iya lle is a well scripted and produced comedy.

Amira Ferchichi

This 19-year old make-up artist from London has her magic makeup kit to give your face that hollyowood glam. Her love for make-up began when she was a little girl. She has done some work for various companies including Nine Girls Promotion. She talks to Daisydessy about her dream to work with Beyonce and her love for cocktails and shopping.

Page 44: July Issue

What inspired you to get into makeup? I’ve always grown up with make up around me and always used to play around with it when I was young. I loved experimenting as a child and have always dreamed of becoming a make up artist.

What is it like in the life of Amira? In the life of Amira, I like to socialise and party with friends. I love to go shopping in the daytime, drink cocktails and spend time with my friends and family.

How would you describe your signature style? My signature look is flicked eyeliner and red lips.

Where do you look for inspiration when it comes to getting ideas? I get inspiration from fashion magazines and fashion shows.

How long have you been doing makeup for? I have been working with make up for just over a year now.

What are your favourite makeup brands? My favourite make up brands are MAC, Lancôme and Bobbi Brown.

Which celebrities would you like to work with if you had the chance? I would love to work with Beyonce because I think she’s such a diva and it would be very challenging to meet her expectations.

What are some of your favourite products in your make-up kit? My favourite products in my make-up kit are my MAC eye shadow pigments and blush.

Page 45: July Issue

What beauty tips/advice would you give to women?Make sure you powder the face well after applying foundation, to avoid a shiny face.

Do you see yourself someday creating your own makeup line?Yes I do see myself creating my own make up line one day. That’s defiantly something I would love to do before I die.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to go into the makeup industry?I would advise that you prepare for the busy, pressured life style as a make-up artist and that you enjoy doing what you do and have a deep passion for the make up you use. Also prepare to gather up an expensive, professional kit including make up brushes.

Have you done any work for any TV shows, events and etc?Yes I have done a few jobs for make-up events and a photo shoot I done a few weeks back for a DJ/Club promotion called Nine Girls Promotions.

What do you think of this season’s makeup trends?I love this season’s make up trends! I think the bright eye shadows/shimmers look great!

What is the best way to put on make-up?The best ways to apply make-up would to be with a decent make up brush and to apply to a clean, cleansed, toned and moisturised skin!

“I would love to work with Beyonce, she’s such a diva and it would be very challenging to meet her demands.”

Page 46: July Issue

Most women are afraid to go all natural, and consistently have to wear makeup all the time, what are your views on this?Well I wear make up all the time myself, but I do think that keeping it to a minimum is a good look, as it can be quite natural looking. Most women that I see in the streets going into their local shops are plastered with it but I think its just a confidence thing. Women like to hide behind a mask sometimes and make up does just the job!

You are also into styling, who are your style icons? My style icons are Misha Barton, Lindsey Lohan, Cheryl Cole and Sienna Miller.

Name five items a woman needs in her wardrobe. A pair of sexy heels, a sexy black dress, skinny jeans, a clutch bag and a white t-shirt.

Who are your favourite fashion designers? My favourite designers are Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. I love the mad, edgy, quirky, different look going on.

Which fashion trends have been your favourite and why?I actually like the laid back look. The whole white top, skinny jeans and a blazer look going on right now. Very supermodel-esque

“I actually like the whole white top, skinny jeans and a blazer looking going on right now. Very supermodel-esque.

Describe your own personal styleWhere do you see yourself in the next couple of years? Now my personal style is different everyday. One day I’m as casual as can be with just sticking on a pair of jeans, a white t-shirt and some pumps and the next I’m a sleek chic with skinny jeans a sexy, high heels.

Where do you see yourself in the next couple of years? In the next couple of years I hope to see myself working on fashion shows in the states with top models, fashion designers and also photographers and magazine editors from Vogue magazine.
