    Headline NewsFair is almost here! We are entering the season for judgings, skill-a-thons, andfinalizing all fair exhibits! Please remember that this is a time to learn, havefun, and be a good sport. The focus of this season is not the award you receiveat the end; it is the lessons you learned along the way.

    I have had a wonderful time meeting many of you and learning more about theshows, clinics, camps and programs offered here in Lorain County. I am reallylooking forward to experiencing this next stage in our program year- the time ofyear that all of our 4-Hers are able to showcase what they have learned.

    4-H AdvisoryLeadership AwardThis Award recognizes one or two Lorain County 4-H members who excel inleadership. The 4-H Advisory Committee is again asking for nominations from4-H members and volunteers. The nomination form (attached) is for you to nominate yourself or some other 4-H member you think excels in the area of leadership. You must be at least 16years old as of January 1st of this year to be eligible for the Leadership Award

    and a current 4-H member. The nomination form plus two letters of recommendation are due to theExtension Office before 4:30 p.m. on FRIDAY, JULY 12th. If you don’t haveenough room in a category on the form, attach additional pages as necessary. The letters of recommendation should be in sealed envelopes, one from a 4-Hadvisor who is not your parent, and one from another source. If you don’t feellike you can nominate yourself, talk to one of your advisors and ask them tonominate you.

    Milk BarnThe Lorain County 4-H Advisory Committee is offering 4-H clubs an opportunityto man the Milk Barn for 2 hour shifts during the week of the fair. Clubs arelimited to 5 shifts! Each shift will need to be manned by a 4-H advisor orparent and 1-4 children age 8 and above (No Cloverbuds) It is preferred thatthe children are 4-H members but, family members of the appropriate agegroup will also be allowed to participate. Working in the booth will be countedas a Banner Club activity under "Building Watch." For each 2 hour shiftworked, the club will receive one entry into the drawing for a cash prize of

    Penny Wars Start saving your pennies and loose change! 4-H Clubs throughout the countycompete with each other through-out fair week, turning in coins based on dailychallenges, to earn prizes, awards and the title of Penny Wars Champion! Thisfun and friendly competition is to raise funds towards our 4-H AdvisoryCommittee. All clubs are encouraged to join in the fun.     4-H EndowmentThank you BoothShowing your appreciation to those that have supported our youth and ourprogram is always encouraged!     Lorain County 4-H Horse ShowsTo be eligible to exhibit an equine at county fair: The junior fair exhibitor andhorse must have participated in at least one Lorain County 4-H Horse Show orPAS show AND attend body scoring prior to August 1.

    4-H Club NewsProject RequirementsAt this point all of you have completed enrollment, selected projects and are ready to set

    goals and complete project work!! If you have not already purchased your project books,

    resource guides and record forms, please be sure to visit our office to do so! You may

    view and download our project order form here.

    We have put together a wonderful resource to assist all of you in navigating what 4-H

    project requirements are for this year as well as what opportunities you have to exhibit at

    Lorain County Jr. Fair. You may pick up a printed version of this document at the 4-

    H Office OR you may view and download the document by clicking here.

    *** Requirement for ALL Livestock Project Books***

    Mandatory as in the past.

    We are enforcing the existing rule that ALL youth must turn in a project book in order

    to be able to show at the Lorain County Fair.

    The expectation is youth receive a minimum of 50%, or 15 points out of 30 to exhibit

    a live animal at the fair.

    ALL books will be evaluated at our Skill-a-thon event. There will be opportunity to

    drop-off your project book and records to the 4-H office prior to skill-a-thon if you are

    not planning on attending.

    4-H Camps4-H Camp season in Lorain County was a huge success! We had approximately 100 Cloverbuds, counselors and adult staff attend thisyear's Blast off to Cloverbud Day Camp! Participants learned about weatherand constellations, played fun out-of-this-world games, created galaxy art andplanted alien buddies, all while making new friends and learning how to getalong with others.

    Over 130 campers, counselors and adult staff spent the week at Kelleys IslandJuly 1-5 where- Life is Best in the Wild Wild West! Team building challenges,covered wagon races, games, crafts, snacks were enjoyed by all.

    Upcoming Workshops and EventsSkill-a-thonAre you ready to put your project knowledge to the test? Join us for this fun hands-on

    event July 22, 2019 and July 24, 2019 at the New Russia Township Lodge. Twelve project

    areas will be offered between the two days. You may participate in as many of the project

    areas as you would like. Because the skill-a-thon portion of this event is not mandatory-

    you do not have to be enrolled in a project to participate in the skill-a-thon. Tentative times

    for both days is 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. A more detailed schedule will be shared on our website

    and by e-mail upon confirmation of our facilitators and judges.

    Lorain County 4-H, 4-H FCS Committee, Shooting Sports Council and Jr. FairBoard work collaboratively to offer the following judging opportunities. If youhave any questions please do not hesitate to contact the 4-H office!

    July 15, 2019- FCS Judging/Style Review and Early/State Fair Judging New Russia Township Lodge This judging is for all 4-H’ers enrolled in FCS projects. Additionally, 4-H'erswishing to be considered for State Fair in Ag/Still-Life projects should attendthis judging. Check the list of the specific Ag/Still-Life, FCS and FCS SpecialInterest projects which will be judged on this date. These are in 4-H Evaluationand Exhibit Guidelines found on our website or by clicking here.

    To participate in this judging you MUST make an appointment for a judgingtime with the Extension Office between June 10th—28th. Call the 4-H Office at440-326-5851 to schedule your appointment!

    *To be eligible for clothing awards, participation in Style Review is required. **Master Clothing Award: This award is given every year by Barb Cummingsand Cherie Parrish to a 4-H members enrolled in sewing projects for at leastthree years. Bring to with you to judging, three clothing projects (including thisyear's) that you have made, showing a progression of skills used in theseprojects.     ATTENTION ALL FOWL EXHIBITORS:

    An informational clinic will be held on Sunday, August 4th at 2 pm. The clinicwill take place in the Cow Palace, Barn #4. This clinic is open to all fowlexhibitors showing in any market or exhibition class. We will touch on veryimportant topics that will be necessary for this year’s fair! We will have guestspeakers who will walk you through very important concepts, from the finalweeks of raising market birds to the type judging for exhibition birds, this clinicwill be the opportunity to learn and prepare! Other topics that will be discussedare show prep, type judging, conditioning, class set up, judging line up, barnlayout, fun shows and so much more! We will have a mock showmanship thatall exhibitors and/or future exhibitors may participate in, in order to understandthe basics of showmanship! We will have an actual showmanship judge there,so it will be excellent practice! Want to learn more about your chicken, duck,goose, turkey or pigeon? We will have birds of each type of fowl at the clinic inorder to get the basics of handling your fowl! Are you confused about the newrules for this year, or the fun shows? We will be explaining all of this is GREATdetail, and the Fowl Department and Adults Consultants for the department willbe there to answer ALL questions! We will have A TON of paper resources forexhibitors to begin prepping for fair, and some links to online prep as well!Come with a ton of questions, and get ready to learn!

    Junior Fair board Annual Sponsorship FundraiserJunior Fair board's sponsorship fundraiser is under way! Funds raised gotowards for barn improvements, tools, office supplies, and more. Most recently,funds have allowed JFB to replace boards for tack tents, renovate the pig washarea, secure larger turkey cages, and purchase a pressure washer to assistwith before and after fair clean-ups. Additionally, up to five scholarships areawarded to graduating seniors every year.

    Open to anyone – groups, clubs, businesses, individuals.Must submit the entry form at the bottom of this page by August 9.Decorated hay bales must be set up no later than Friday, August 16 @ 10am. If using donated bales, they will be ready to be decorated by Friday,August 9, weather permitting (you will receive a phone call or email withthe location once your bales are placed).Judging: Friday, August 16.If you want your decorations and/or bale(s), they must be removed nolater than Tuesday,August 27, 2019.There will be a limited number of donated bales on a first come, first servebasis. Donated bales are 4’ x 5’ round.     4. Exit- Upon completion of a project area, you will provide your score card to the project area superintendent.

    5. Project Book Pick-Up- We will have a project book pick-up area for you to retrieve your project books/records.

    Awards: First, Second and Third place Rosettes in each division.

    Divisions: Senior Division – Age 14 - 18 Junior Division – Age 8 to 13 (May have an adult coach. Coach may NOT help

    with the construction and decorating of the cake. They may not touch

    the cake or table.)

    Team Eligibility: Teams to consist of two (2) to four (4) members. Maximum of two (2) teams per club or organization (one per division.) (No professional cake decorators)

    FCS Committee will supply the following: 6” x 6” 4” high square Styrofoam form, White Frosting, Small bowls to mix colored frosting in.

    Teams will supply: Any utensils needed to put decorations on cake (knives, spatulas, spoons, decorating tools.) Any additional items required for the design.

    Time Limit: Teams will be given one half hour to complete their cake.

    Judging: Cakes & Teams will be judged on originality, creativity, neatness, use of color, team work.

    Design Hints: Teams are encouraged to plan their cake design in advance. You are permitted to bring a drawing of your design.

  • 2019 4-H ADVISORY COUNCIL PENNY WARS

    Participants: Any 4-H, FFA, FCCLA or Farm Bureau club members are welcome. Days & Hours of Operation, and Daily Rules:

    Monday 1:00-7:30 pm Free Day! Anything goes! Everything Positive!

    Tuesday 1:00-7:30 pm Rolled pennies & loose pennies positive only! Paper and silver negative.

    Wednesday 1:00-7:30 pm Paper Positive & rolled coins Positive. Loose coins negative!

    Thursday 12:00- 4pm Free Day! Anything goes! Everything Positive!

    Friday 1:00-7:30 pm Rolled pennies double positive Silver and paper negative.

    Saturday 12:00- 5:00 pm Paper Double Negative! All coin positive rolled or loose.

    RULES OF ENGAGEMENT:

    1. Shifts will be farmed out to 4-H Clubs, FFA, FCCLA or Farm Bureau Clubs. 2. All shifts will be 2 hours in length. Clubs are not to leave booth until they are relieved by

    the next club or a member of 4-H Advisory Committee. 3. Upon making signed application by an advisor to enter the Penny War a club will be

    furnished a jar bearing their name by 4-H Advisory Committee. 4. Any club that participates in the Penny War MUST man the booth for at least one two-

    hour shift. A club who is unable to personally man a shift may have a proxy (another club) man the booth for the mandatory 2 hour shift. No club can have a club proxy for them more than one time. A club can just be highlighted during a 2 hour shift. It is not necessary that the proxy club be a participant in the Penny Wars. A. A club MUST have at least one adult in the booth at all times. B. No more than 3 or 4 youth members are to be in the booth at any given time. C. The jars are to remain on the booth table. (They are not to be picked up and walked

    around the barn or held at the door.) D. Clubs are encouraged to promote their club and encourage people to deposit funds

    into their jar. They CAN NOT discourage people from putting funds into the jars of other clubs.

    E. Jars will be taped shut. The seal will be checked by the 4-H Committee member who is checking on the shift change. Any broken seals at the beginning of the shift will mean that the departing club will forfeit their entry into the drawing for that shift.

    F. The last ½ hour shift of the day will be manned by 4-H Advisory Committee Members.

    5. All monies placed in jars have a “POINT” value, either POSITIVE or NEGATIVE. Read the Daily Rules carefully.

    6. Points are based on the value of the money (ie. Quarter is 25 points; dime is 10 points; nickel is 5 points; penny is 1 point, dollar coins or bills are 100 points). See daily rules to determine if the value is negative or positive.

    7. Participants can deposit money in any jar they wish, to add points to their own jar, or to reduce points (sabotage) in a competitor’s jar.

    8. Daily totals will be done and posted after the booth closes. Prize Money- Two Ways To Win

    1. The three clubs accumulating the most positive points will be awarded: a. The top club will have its name placed on the Advisory Committee plaque. b. Clubs will be rewarded as follows:

    1. Highest positive points = $25.00 2. Second highest positive points = $15.00 3. Third highest positive points = $10.00

    Total payout: $50.00

    2. For each shift at which a club covered the Penny Wars booth they will receive an entry into a drawing to take place at the Volunteer Banquet. A club may only win once in this drawing. 1. First club drawn= $15.00 2. Second club drawn= $10.00 3. Third club drawn= $5.00
