REACH OUT AND TOUCH A BROTHERBy Allan R. Lazor, 32°

General Secretary, Valley of Houston

When I became the Secretary of a very active Blue Lodge (SugarLand No. 1141), I quickly became aware of the wide variety of dutiesthe holder of that office is called on to perform almost daily. As someof you who have held the office of Secretary know, and as those ofyou who have just been elected will shortly find out, many of those

duties are nowhere to be found in the Handbook for Secretaries of Constituent Lodges. Forthose of us who have taken on the responsibility of that office its satisfaction comes not onlyin keeping the lodge well organized and running smoothly, but also in being able to assistBrother Masons or their families when they reach out to the lodge for assistance. Often, theSecretary is the first contact distressed Brothers or their families are able to make with thelodge when trouble strikes.

As Masons, and particularly Scottish Rite Masons, all of us are charged with theduty to aid and assist our Brothers in times of distress. In my experience, Masons have nevershrunk from the task as individuals or through our many groups. We Scottish Rite Masonsprovide assistance to Scottish Rite Brethren or their families who are in distress in theHouston Valley most directly through the Almoner, though many of the requests for relieforiginate in the office of the General Secretary which, as in the case of the Blue Lodge, isoften the first point of contact for those requiring assistance.

While the Almoner is there to help the Brethren in times of trouble when financialassistance can make a short term difference in the life of Scottish Rite Mason or his family, there is another type of assistance to Scottish Rite Masons which only the Valley Chairmanor I can provide namely, help for those Brothers who because of illness or age are no longerable to continue to pay dues.

One such opportunity came to me this week in an email forwarded from thepresident of one of our Scottish Rite clubs. The Brother who wrote to the club presidentrecounted that he had casually run into a Scottish Rite Mason of his acquaintance at the postoffice in their community. He hadn't seen the other Brother for a number of years andinquired after his health. The Brother explained that his wife had suffered a debilitatingillness and that he had himself had suffered from a life threatening illness but that his andhis wife's medical conditions were at least stable for the time being. The Brother related thathe hadn't been able to pay Scottish Rite dues for a number of years and supposed that he hadbeen suspended for that reason. He was now able to pay dues but was unaware of theprocedure for reinstatement or even if he was eligible for reinstatement.

Upon reading the email which the club president forwarded, Bro. Pete and Iimmediately decided to remit the unpaid dues and reinstate the Brother who had fallen bythe wayside. While I, and Bro. Normand as well, took great pleasure in being able to be ofassistance to our Brother, this event gave me pause to consider how many more of ourScottish Rite Brothers there are in a similar situation.

I know from looking over the delinquent dues list that a great many of our Brethrenwhose names are on it are getting along in years. From my telephone conversations withmany of them I have learned that age, infirmity and the difficult financial choices that haveto be made as consequence of living on a modest fixed income, have lead many of theseBrothers to feel that they are no longer able to continue to be members of the Scottish Rite.Nothing could be less true.

Presidents Series:The 11th President,

1845-1849[Hardcover]By John Seigenthaler

The story of a pivotal president who watched over ourwestward expansion and solidified the dream of Jacksoniandemocracy

James K. Polk was a shrewd and decisive commander in chief, the youngest president elected to guide the still-young nation, who served as Speaker of the House and governor of Tennesseebefore taking office in 1845. Considered a natural successor toAndrew Jackson, “Young Hickory” miraculously revived hisfloundering political career by riding a wave of public sentimentin favor of annexing the Republic of Texas to the Union.

Shortly after his inauguration, he settled the disputed Oregonboundary and by 1846 had declared war on Mexico in hopes ofannexing California. The considerably smaller American armynever lost a battle. At home, however, Polk suffered a politicalfirestorm of antiwar attacks from many fronts. Despite histremendous accomplishments, he left office an extremelyunpopular man, on whom stress had taken such a physical tollthat he died within three months of departing Washington.Fellow Tennessean John Seigenthaler traces the life of thispresident who, as Truman noted, “said what he intended to doand did it.”

John Seigenthaler is the founder of the First Amendment Centerat Vanderbilt University. An administrative assistant to RobertF. Kennedy, he was an award-winning journalist for TheNashvile Tennessean for forty-three years, finally serving as thepaper’s editor, publisher, and CEO, and was named foundingeditorial director of USA Today in 1982. He lives in Nashville,Tennessee.

Endow Your Membership

There are a few "sure bets" in life that involve no gamble, and Endowed Membership in the Scottish Rite is near thetop of that list. Whether called Life Membership,Endowed Membership, or Perpetual Membership, it offersa simple and sound way to guarantee your membership inthe Scottish Rite for life. At the same time you are helpingbuild the financial stability of your Valley.

The Statutes of the Supreme Council provide for LifeMemberships. These are actually perpetual endowedmemberships in that the principal of the fund is neverexpended, thus making an income stream available to theValley into perpetuity. Every member should considerpurchasing a perpetual membership for the reason that itprovides a guaranteed and predictable future income forthe Valley.

The fee for a perpetual membership is determined by theS.G.I.G. or Deputy, but cannot be less than $500 formembers under 75 years of age, nor less than $200 formembers 75 years and older. The current fee for theOrient of Texas is $1200 for member under 75 years and$400 for member 75 years and over. The fee may be paidat one time or payed over the twelve month dues year.Monthly payments for a Endowed Membership can beautomatically charged to your VISA/MasterCard. Onceyou start the automatic charges, you'll never receive a billfor dues again, even during the payment period. Whenyour Life Membership is paid up, the automatic chargesstop, and once you start the payment program, your costsare guaranteed-you're never subject to dues increasesagain. It's so easy, it's almost painless.

LODGES IN MALAYSIA: All the lodges in Malaysia arechartered by the grand lodges of England, Scotland and Ireland. The United Grand Lodge of England has 21 lodges in Malaysiaoperating under its "District Grand Lodge of the EasternArchipelago" headquartered in Singapore. The Grand Lodge ofScotland has 7 lodges in Malaysia operating under its "DistrictGrand Lodge of the Middle East" headquartered in Kuala Lumpur.Ireland has one lodge in Malaysia, governed directly from Dublin.FREEMASON'S HALL: Eleven lodges (8 English Constitution, 2Scottish Const., and 1 Irish Const.) meet at the Masonic Hall (123Jalan Tun Razak Street) in Kuala Lumpur, all sharing the samelodge room and dining hall. No two lodges meet on the same night(Fridays and Wednesdays being the most popular), and there arestill nine meeting nights each month that are still not taken,

excluding Saturdays and Sundays. (I suppose there may beappendant bodies that meet on some of those nights.)

HISTORY: Although a good number of lodges had operated inIndia since the early 1700s, it was not until 1809 that the firstlodge was warranted in what was then known as "Malaya." Thatlodge was established at Penang in 1809, and was an Englishlodge warranted by the Ancients Grand Lodge of England. However, the lodge did not survive. Singapore received apermanent lodge in 1845, and in 1875 Royal Prince of WalesLodge No. 1555 was warranted at Penang. It still operates there.

According to the book, "Freemasonry Universal" by AustraliansKent Henderson and Tony Pope, "Malaysian citizens constitutethe vast majority of the membership in Malaysian lodges. However, it is the Chinese and Indians in Malaysia that havejoined the Craft in large numbers, not ethnic Malays, althoughthere are certainly Malays who are members."
