Decimocuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario OBSTACLES

The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today’s scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are “[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart” (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a “thorn in the flesh” (2 Corinthians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that “[he] was amazed at their lack of faith” (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encour-age us today: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).

En los calendarios antiguos se celebraba la memoria de san Cristóbal el día 10 de este mes. Pero, con la reforma del Concilio Vaticano II este pobre santo se quedó sin trabajo sólo por el hecho de no poder comprobar su exis-tencia. No fue que la reforma del Concilio Vaticano II qui-siera haber negado al pobre de Cristóbal ni a tantos otros santos que fueron quitados del Santoral Romano. Sólo buscaba hacer lugar para nuevos santos y beatos; y menos mal, porque eventualmente el Papa Juan Pablo II cano-nizó y beatificó a más de mil personas durante su pontifi-cado. Muchos de estos santos no son tan bien conocidos como nuestro amigo san Cristóbal. Aunque ya no está en el calendario eclesiástico, Cristóbal continúa en los tableros de muchos carros ofre-ciendo su servicio de protección para los automovilistas. Esta chambita la consiguió porque ayudaba a cruzar el río a personas en camino, hasta que un día le tocó cargar con el niño Dios. Su nombre significa “el que carga con Cris-to” y es un desafío a todos los que llevamos el nombre de cristiano.

Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battle-field,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary con-ditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their brav-ery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public every-where in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: “They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. HEALING MASS Fr. Steephen Viblanc, OSM, Monday, July 16, 2018

At 7:30 pm , St. Linus Church Fr. Steephen was born in India to a prayerful fam-ily. Immediately after his high school education, he en-tered the Servite Order or the Order of Friar Servants of Mary in 1997 and was ordained on April 22, 2009 also for that community. He was then appointed as a Voca-tion Director as well as both as an Associate Pastor and Pastor for a Servite parish while still in India. His community subsequently assigned him in California on July 2014 and was assigned at Divine Savior Catholic Church in Los Angeles for a period of six months. He was later assigned to Servite High School, an all male Roman Catholic College preparatory high school lo-cated in Anaheim as a Chaplain and Spiritual Director for the school. His main function is counseling the students and saying the everyday mass at the school, confession and retreats complementing the formation of each student to the person of Christ, drawing them to embrace Christ, love Christ, imitate, live and be Christ to others. Fr. Steephen is also helping out nearby parishes like St. Paul of the Cross, St. Philip's at Fullerton and St. Linus Church. He helps the Cursillo Movement in Anaheim for their weekly Wednesday masses. Father Steephen continues to find his relationship with the Lord increasing everyday in his love to serve God's peo-ple as a way of serving His master.

Dear Parish Family, Because We Care Food Pantry serves approximately 70 needy families per month by giv-ing them various grocery and toiletry items to help sustain their families for about 2 weeks. We also hand out about 48 to 60 food bags to homeless people living within our parish community. Our regular food distribution days are the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 3-4:30pm. Our monthly expenses run close to $1,000 and we depend on the gene rosity of our parish family to keep this minis-try going. If you are in a position to help to our wonderful ministry, please consider becoming a regular monthly donor to help keep our pantry shelves stocked. Please call Barbra Manriquez at 562-900-9492 to see what our im-mediate needs are for the next distribution or simply choose a few items off the list below and bring them to the parish office. DID YOU KNOW? Educate children to identify risky behavior Recently, abuse against women has been thrust into the public spotlight, with the “Me Too” movement. It is important for parents/caregivers be aware of risks to girls and risks to boys. Boys and girls both need to be educated on what’s acceptable and what’s inappropriate, and how to react if someone does something that crosses the line. It is important for adults to reinforce the message that we must all look for, identify, and call attention to the risky behavior exhibited by any adult toward any child. Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Unlike the people whose great faith inspired us last Sun-day, we hear this week that the message of God’s love is sometimes met with rejection and disbelief. It is difficult for us to grasp the immensity of God’s great goodness. We cannot comprehend the offer of freedom found in God’s love. Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and Jesus all experience the rejection of the prophet who witnesses to this great love of God for us. Ezekiel understands that he is com-pelled to share God’s message, whether people listen or not. Saint Paul accepts that he is a weak vessel, and must bear insults and persecution for the sake of Christ. Jesus knows that the people are astonished at his wisdom, yet they cannot allow themselves to hear him. Unwilling to look beyond the child who grew up in their village, they are not willing to put their faith in him.

WEAK OR STRONG? Is your faith weak or strong? Most of us have mo-ments in which our answer could simply be “Yes!” Faith is not a once-and-for-all thing. Our faith ebbs and flows, along with changes in life circumstances, as we mature and grow in relationship with Christ and with one another. Pope Francis speaks to this in The Joy of the Gospel, when he encourages us to be open to an encounter with God’s love daily. In these encounters, like the one that the people in the syna-gogue had with Jesus in today’s Gospel, we may be astonished at God’s love and are invited to accept it. Weakness in faith is not always the result of some failure on our part. We may simply be at a cross-roads, at which we cannot clearly see or understand what comes next. It is at such a time that we step out in blind faith with the assurance that God’s love awaits us in every moment.

WEAKNESS AND STRENGTH The opposite of strong faith may not be weakness, but rather misplacing faith by relying on ourselves, our mate-rial possessions, or others. When we think we can do things on our own, we leave little room for God in our lives. When we develop a false sense of security that is rooted in material things, our trust in Jesus is quite shal-low. Growing in faith calls us to rely on God’s great goodness above all things. When we open our minds and hearts and allow ourselves to be astonished at the love and life found in Jesus Christ, we realize that we do not need to rely on ourselves. Saint Paul teaches us a very important lesson about this in his second letter to the Co-rinthians, in which we hear, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.”

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Strength in Weakness

Is Paul serious? Can you imagine being content with “weaknesses, insults, hardships, and persecutions?” (2Cor 12:10) Paul never specifies what that “thorn in the flesh” was. I used to think it referred to a physical weakness, or disability. But some of the commentaries I’ve read say that it was a person who opposed Paul (think of a “thorn in my side.”) That opponent may have been a Christian who Paul did not want to mention by name. Paul could have been proud of all that God revealed to him, and of all that he accomplished in spreading the gospel. He sees that “thorn” as God’s way of keeping him humble. So instead he boasts about his weaknesses. He knows that all the good work he has done have been accomplished by Christ. So he accepted suffering, rejection, setbacks and persecution

because they helped him see how much Christ was doing through him. We can learn a lot from St. Paul. Remember how Jesus said to love your neighbor as yourself. Paul loved himself in the good sense of accepting his faults and weak-nesses. He was always aware that he once persecuted Christians. But that fault en-abled him to experience God’s forgiveness. I usually try to avoid doing things that show my weaknesses. That means I might miss a chance to see how God can help. Suppose you don’t know how to swim, so you stay out of swimming pools. Of course, then you could never learn to swim. But if you get in the water and let some-one teach you, you might just find yourself liking the water. St. Paul says that when he is weak, then he is strong. He knows that God will still work through him, showing God’s power to heal the sick and draw converts to Christ, in spite of Paul’s weaknesses. Paul did what he could to encourage others to follow Jesus, but he knew the results of his preaching and healing were up to God. When you think that you would fail at spreading the faith, remember Paul and give your weaknesses to God. Then see what he can do!
