Centers’ (CUTC) annual summer meeting hosted by Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. Joel Volinski was
elected to serve as President of the Council in 2015-16 after having served in the other officer positions over the past three
years. CUTC is an organization that represents the interests of over 90 universities with transportation centers and works
to improve transportation research and education at member institutions, facilitate communications among members,
recognize excellence among members, and promote interest in transportation among grade school and high school stu-
dents to encourage them to consider transportation as a career. As President, he will drive the agenda for improving the
value of CUTC to member institutions. In addition, Joel was reconfirmed to serve as Chair of the Research, Education,
and Training Reauthorization Coalition (RETRC), a non-profit organization representing 22 universities that work togeth-
er to promote continued federal funding for university transportation research. Over 70 members of Congress signed a
letter drafted by RETRC that assures their support for continued federal support in any reauthorization of federal surface
transportation legislation.
Joel Volinski traveled to Portland, Oregon to serve as a member of the Executive Committee of the National Institute for
Transportation and Communities (NITC), one of the five “National” University Transportation Centers selected by the
USDOT. NITC members include Portland State University, the University of Oregon, Oregon Institute of Technology, Uni-

were approved for funding for projects which address NITC’s theme of Livability. In addition, USF will receive support for
the development of curriculum for a course to be taught by Kristine Williams as part of the Urban and Regional Planning
department program. Funds to support students and guest speakers will also be made available to USF over the next year.
