Fr.Carl’sCorner Happy 4th of July weekend! May it be as enjoyable and safe as possible, as we still carry into the holiday concerns regarding the spread of the Corona Virus. This week, daily Masses begin in Church. For now, there will be only one morning Mass each day - Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 6:30 a.m., Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 a.m., and Saturday at 8:00 a.m. Our weekend schedule returns on July 11/12 with the 4:30 p.m. Mass on Saturday and 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Masses on Sunday morning. The 5:00 p.m. Sunday evening Mass will return at a later date. I have received many comments concerning the Black Lives Matter (BLM) banner out in front of Church. Most favorable, some not so. I expected it would cause some controversy, but most of all, I hope it will spark discussion and listening. Listening to another’s point of view is never easy; but

is a must for building a stronger and more just society when it comes to the issues swirling around racism in our country today. Listening is necessary for increasing compassion and empathy for the struggles and concerns of others, ensuring racism finds no home in our hearts and souls. I realize there are many groups within the BLM movement and some proclaim ideas that we may not agree with or align ourselves with. However, this banner is meant to remind us of this truth - God as creator made ALL OF US IN HIS OWN IMAGE! Each and every one of us in God’s own image! Every time we make the sign of the cross and begin our prayer, we are reminded that we are in relationship with God, with creation, with each other and God among us. Individually and within our society, we must ask ourselves, does how we think, act and speak mirror this truth of who we are as God’s creation? I think the Black Lives Matter banner, all politics aside, asks us to think about this and then pray for and act on justice and equality for all. Some have said to me, why not say all lives matter. Yes, of course, ALL LIVES MATTER. However, at this time, a particular group of people who have carried the weight of pain and injustice in our society need us to listen and pay attention. I asked Maudette Carr, an active parishioner who is known to many, and an African-American, to share some personal thoughts. I ask that your read it and LISTEN, deeply listen. With you a Christian. For you a priest. I am so thrilled that St. Giles is displaying this banner. For me, it is a powerful tribute to the Black lives that have been taken by violence and/or police brutality. I am sure there are many more names that are not captured here. I see this banner as a tribute to each of those individual names written, because it simply and powerfully says that even though their voices have been unjustly silenced, their spirits have now been awakened. It is a humanitarian statement that should speak to our hearts and the human soul. It is with great sadness that I read all these names. Such a needless loss of youthful potential and the many dreams that will go unfulfilled. The violence and police brutality must stop. There is so much work to be done, dialogues to have and calls for action. In the words of Ralph Ellison, it shines light on the “invisibility” of black people and the conditions that we have faced. THEY ALL HAVE MATTERED!

Why We Sing in Church, and Why, for now, We Will Not “I sing because I’m happy. I sing because I’m free…” those words are taken from a popular Gospel hymn, His Eye is On the Sparrow, written in the early 1900’s by Martin and Gilbert. The words continue to ring true for us today. Singing can express what we feel more fully than just mere words. Together in church we sing our joy, sorrow, concern, lament, hope, praise and unity. We reach out to God in song and simultaneously we connect to one another. The Church holds singing as necessary and integral to the celebration of Mass. It is not an add-on or an adornment, but rather an essential element to worship. The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, the first major document of the Second Vatican Council, states that “a liturgical service takes on a nobler aspect when the rites are celebrated with singing and the faithful actively participate” (SC, No. 113). The 2007 document, Sing to the Lord: Music in Catholic Worship, the first document on liturgical music issued by the United States Catholic Bishops, states, “Good music makes the liturgical prayers of the Christian community more alive and fervent so that everyone can praise and beseech the Triune God more powerfully, more intently, and more effectively” (STL, No. 5). But now, as churches begin to open for public worship across the Archdiocese of Chicago, we have been asked to refrain from congregational singing, out of care and concern for the health and safety of all who gather to pray. As the research on aerosol spray during singing is being analyzed, the prudent approach is to abstain from singing, at least for now. The cantor will continue to sing certain parts of the Mass, while other parts belonging more properly to the people, will be spoken so that all may participate. All of us involved in music ministry at St. Giles promise to do our best to make our liturgical music meaningful and prayerful for all who attend worship in our beautiful space. I am grateful to all of the St. Giles’ music ministers who help us to sing the prayers that God has placed in our hearts. It is our intention that we will gradually return to a fuller expression of worship as soon as it is safe to do so. Please remember that our highest priority now is the health and safety of our community. I look forward to seeing you in church again! Hello St. Giles Family, Cardinal Cupich shared our multi-phased plan for reopening churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago, found at https://www.archchicago.org/coronavirus/reopening. Specifically, we are now moving from Phase IA to Phase II, as described here:

• Phase I allows for parishes to reopen for Baptism, Reconciliation, Weddings and Funerals with a limit of 50 attendees.

• Phase IA allows for parishes to reopen for private prayer and adoration with a limit of 50 attendees.

• Phase II allows for reopening for weekday and weekend Masses for larger groups depending on the guidelines from the state and the capacity of the church building.

Volunteers Still Needed – In order for our parish reopening plan to be implemented, I am asking you to consider being a volunteer. However, to keep everyone safe, we are required to ask only those under the age of 65 to participate in the work of the reopening plan. It is also important that you not have any underlying medical condition, such as diabetes or lung disease, or are undergoing cancer treatment, etc. If you are someone who can volunteer under these circumstances, I urge you to consider assisting me with one of these three reopening teams:

• Set-up team – Sample duties include ensuring that all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration / gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees’ arrival/departure, windows are opened, etc.

• Greeting team – Sample duties include assisting in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill; directing people to appropriate seating/waiting areas, etc.

• Cleaning team – Sample duties include maintaining and cleaning essential and trafficked areas of the church before and after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if you do not have your own, in addition to approved cleaning / disinfecting supplies.

The Reopening Leadership Team and I will make sure that all volunteers are properly trained. Dear Members of the St. Giles Parish Family, The St. Giles Prayer Shawl Ministers have continued to create, bless, and distribute prayer shawls throughout the Covid virus outbreak. There are a large number and variety of shawls, lap blankets and scarves available at the Parish Center for those suffering or for those celebrating a joyous event. The shawls are wrapped in plastic and dated with the date the shawl was last touched by human hands. During the month of May, we distributed an estimated 14 shawls and at least 15 new shawls have been created. These shawls are intended to be a reminder of the presence of a loving God and the prayers of a loving St. Giles Parish. You can pick up a shawl by calling the Parish Center at 708-383-3430 and leaving a message. One of the staff members will return your call and set up a time to meet you. If that will not work for you, let the staff member know and one of the Prayer Shawl Ministers will plan to get one to you. Donations of canned or shelf-stable dry goods and paper products to the covered bins located at the back door on

the north side of the Parish Center at 1025 Columbian. Members of Love in Action and the staff are regularly

emptying the bins and bringing the donations inside to prepare them for delivery.
