This don’t-miss event – one day longer than recent past conventions – will be jam-packed with something for everyone as we spotlight the fraternity’s past, present, and future. Here are just a few of the exciting features in store when you come to sunny Sacramento next August. Featured artist Chen Yi Internationally renowned Chen Yi, the fraternity’s 2012 Sterling Patron, will be composer-in- residence for two full convention days. Dr. Chen will give a composition workshop, be available for individual composer consultations, and speak at Saturday’s concluding banquet. (See the winter 2012 Triangle to learn more about Chen Yi.) Foundation 50 th anniversary celebration The spotlight shines on the Mu Phi Epsilon Foundation as it concludes its year-long golden anniversary celebration. The Foundation will host a convention luncheon, recital concert by past International Competition winners, workshop on preparing successful scholarship applications, and other special events. International Competition Finalists in the 2014 Mu Phi Epsilon International Competition will give performances of a lifetime for distinguished judges and audiences watching with enthusiastic anticipation. Could one of the finalists be you? The winner will perform a solo recital a few days later, always a convention highlight. Training for chapter leaders Chapter and district leaders clamor for intensive training to help their chapters grow, flourish, and operate successfully. The convention schedule includes a half-day district directors’ training and three different workshop sessions for chapter delegates. Area attractions Sacramento is within easy driving distance of Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe, San Francisco, Yosemite, and other popular destinations, so plan some personal time before or after convention to take in the sights. 2011 Competition Finalists

Adrienne Albert (Phi Nu, Los Angeles Alumni, ACME)was a finalist for The American Prize 2013 in orchestralcomposition and a semi-finalist in choral composition. Hernewest work Swing Shift for bassoon, piano, and drums waspremiered at the International Double Reed conference.

Pianist Julie Bees (Phi Pi, Wichita Alumni) performed assoloist in the Saint-Saens Piano Concerto No. 2 with HongKong’s SAR Philharmonic in April. She also taught a masterclass at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts.

Patricia Callan (Phi Upsilon, Boston Alumni) is a busyauthor. Her new play The Reading Club was recentlyperformed by the One Act Players of San Jose, her poem“Clerking at the Ideal Laundry” is online in text andaudio at Rattle poetry magazine (rattle.com) and herchapbook Field Songs has just been released.

A “hidden organ of Rochester” gave up its secrets whenMitzie Collins (Mu Chi, Rochester Alumni) featured itin a performance-demonstration. The event included amini-concert and an opportunity for others to play themint-condition 1926 Skinner organ. Cynthia Howk(Phi Psi, Rochester Alumni) assisted with research.

Marlon Daniel (Mu Xi, Allied) has been appointedorchestra music director of the new Colours of MusicFestival. The festival is October 22-27 in Charleston, SC.

Ann Davis (Phi Lambda, Washington D.C. Alumni)was inducted into the Maryland Senior Citizens Hall ofFame. The only musician to be accorded the honor, shewas recognized for lifelong achievement as a pianist andcurrent volunteer service. Still an active performer, herrecent concerts included a May lecture/performancecommemorating Brahms’s 180th birthday, four serviceconcerts in local public schools, and a chorale concert.

ElmaMae Henderson (Theta) performed in Februaryfor the Stockton (CA) Wednesday Morning Musicale, forwhich she also has served two terms as president. Theprogram included three sacred choruses she composed.She also teaches music privately, volunteers in akindergarten, and writes.

Soprano Arietha Lockhart (Beta Gamma, AtlantaAlumni, ACME) won third place in the professionalopera division of The American Prize in Voice/Friedrichand Virginia Schorr Memorial Award, 2013.

Mu Nu president Jane Davidson received the GoldPresident’s Volunteer Service Award for over 250 servicehours in 2012. Her service included managing theLuckman World Arts Sidestage at nonprofit venue LevittPavilion Pasadena and volunteering with USC’s Arts andHumanities initiative Visions and Voices.

Wichita Alumni initiated six special election members(pictured below) in summer 2012. President MarjorieWalton (Phi Pi, Wichita Alumni) was assisted by ChyBillings (Phi Pi) and several other Phi Pi members.Late candidate Doris Nyberg was honored posthumouslywith a tribute read by her close friend Betty Partridge(Phi Pi, Wichita Alumni vice president). Julia Hoppes(Phi Pi, Wichita Alumni treasurer) hosted.

Sadie Alma (Sally) Graham OwensMu Mu, March 21, 1937Wichita AlumniDied May 14, 2013Vocalist, violinist. Sally was a vocal music supervisor forWichita public schools and a 75-year Mu Phi.

June L. MooreMu Gamma, November 20, 1938Died May 21, 2013Music educator. A long-time public school musicteacher, June also conducted the Lincoln YouthSymphony, played in the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra,and was a published researcher.

Rachel D. Lease Scott-JohnsGamma, November 3, 1935Died April 27, 2013Pianist, organist, church musician, music educator.

Rachel was a church organist and concert performer,having studied organ with (among others) Ava CominCase, national president of Mu Phi Epsilon 1942-1948.

Nell R. Denson ShehornPhi Gamma, November 29, 1936Died February 3, 2013Pianist. Trained as a concert pianist, Nell taught piano.She was active in various alumni chapters wherever herhusband’s jobs took them.

Mary Lynne Stewart ShumwayEpsilon Chi, April 9, 1959San Francisco AlumniDied November 5, 2012Pianist. Mary Lynne taught private piano and servedher church as organist.

Mary Ausplund ToozeEpsilon Delta, January 7, 1962Portland AlumniDied January 24, 2013Pianist. Mary studied compositionwith Darius Milhaud. She was asignificant patron of Oregon artsand for many years she hosted amonthly playing group in her home.

Elizabeth Ann WrancherEpsilon Omicron, May 28, 1954ACMEDied March 6, 2012Vocalist. A lyric dramatic soprano,Elizabeth was a Fulbright scholarin Germany where she sang manyroles and performed in severalmajor European opera houses. She was the first American to win first prize in theInternational Music Contest. For three decades she wasa guest soloist with major orchestras in Germany andthe U.S. Her recordings are housed in the SalzburgMozarteum archives in Augsburg. Elizabeth taughtuniversity-level vocal music, was noted as an adjudicatorand master class teacher, and performed in threeGerman films.
