JULY 29, 2018

Last week, I had the sad honor of celebrating the funeral Mass of Sister Grace Marie Herrle, CSJ, at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Baden, PA. As you may recall, Sister Grace Marie served as the Parish Social Minister at OLG for 15 years, from 1999 to 2014, when she retired. In addition to visiting frail and sick parishioners in homes, hospitals and assisted living facilities, Sister Grace Marie founded our parish’s Respect Life Committee, helped with our parish festival, organized clothing drives for the homeless, holiday outreach in support of needy families, and the prayerful work of our Ladies of Charity. During her 63 years as a religious, Sr. Grace served in a variety of parish and school apostolates, and I count it as a true blessing to have worked with her for a decade here at Our Lady of Grace Parish. She was an exemplary sister, ministerial colleague and friend who made her life’s service caring for the most vulnerable among us. Many OLG parishioners attended the funeral Mass to pray for Sister Grace Marie Herrle, CSJ, a holy woman religious whose prayers and service graced our lives for 15 years. During her remarkable life, Sister Grace also taught in Catholic schools in the dioceses of Pittsburgh, Greensburg, Altoona-Johnstown and Miami, Florida. Ever the educator, Sister Grace Marie later earned a Master of Arts in Christian Ministry and Renewal at the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio, afterwhich she served in both parish social ministry and religious education leadership positions before coming to Our Lady of Grace Parish. In the title story of the book I had published a few years ago, LAST PRIEST STANDING, I named the nun in the story Sister Grace Marie, having in mind the great life of compassionate Christian service embodied in the vocation of our own Sister Grace Marie Herrle, CSJ. I found it a wonderful joy that she received my book and acknowledged the veiled honor of having a fictional character patterned after her life and service in the Church. Rev. Richard A. Infante Pastor

PRESERVE THE UNITY OF THE SPIRIT THROUGH THE BOND OF PEACE – Saint Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, from which the second reading at Mass this weekend is taken, emphasizes the unity of the Church. It is not written solely to the Christian community in Ephesus, but to the worldwide Church united to Jesus Christ her head and shepherd. Yet this focus on unity is not out of concern for the Church herself, but instead as the means for making God’s plan of salvation known throughout the world. Some ask how the changes the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative is bringing about can lead to growth and strength for the Church of Pittsburgh. The answer is that we are being invited to work hard and pray even harder to be united in faith as we come together to form new parish communities. There will be challenges ahead, but let us listen to the wisdom of Saint Paul as we “bear with one another through love” and focus our hearts on what unites us in faith: “one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
