LARGE GROUP
● Say: Welcome to Kids’ Club, we’re so glad you’re here! We want this to be a safe and fun place for you. To do that, let’s all commit to doing a few things:
○ Show respect to each other○ Listen when someone else is speaking○ Have fun!
● Say: This month we’re talking all about EMOTIONS! Emotions are feelings like joy, sadness, anger, fear, loneliness, and so many others. Emotions all come from God, and they help us deal with happens to us...but only when we use them in the right way. God actually wants us to talk about our feelings, and get them out in the open!
● Say: Do you think Jesus felt these emotions? He did! He felt happy, sad, angry, frustrated, lonely….he went through of all of it. So we can trust what he says about dealing with our feelings. Let’s check out a video see which emotion we’re talking about today!
● Video: Inside Out / Meet Fear ● Ask: What emotion did we meet in that clip? Yep, FEAR. What exactly IS
fear? (Let a few kids share with the room.) Yeah, it’s when we feel afraid, anxious or even just worried!
● Say: Fear can be like when you’ve just watched a really scary movie, and then you have to go to bed in you dark room! Or maybe you’re about to go on a roller coaster, and you’re scared of being so high! OR, it can be something like….being worried about taking a big test at school. Or being a nervous about going to a new school where you don’t know anyone yet. These are all different kinds of fears, and we ALL have them! That leads to our big idea for today:
● Slide: We can trust God when we’re afraid.
● Say: To help us understand how we can trust God when we’re afraid or worried, we’re going to hear about a guy named Joseph! He went through a LOT of scary things, and it would have been really easy to let fear and worry take over his whole life! But as you watch, pay attention to how Joseph trusts God instead.
● Video: God’s Story / Joseph● Say: Do you think Joseph ever felt anxious or scared? Yeah, I’m sure he did.
He’s human, just like the rest of us! But because he trusted in God, he was able to move past that fear. He trusted that God would be with him ALWAYS.
● Say: We can all deal with feelings of worry from time to time. Sometimes, we can get caught up in asking “what if THIS happens or what if THAT happens?!?” and thinking of a bunch of different ways that things could go wrong. But, when we feel worried, that’s when we can trust God to take care of us. We can hand our fear over to Him, and let him take care of it!

Tell kids that we’re going to see how brave some of you are by sticking your hand inside a bag and feeling a secret object–but you can’t look at it!
● Have kids sit with their small groups, but make sure they can all see the presentation area.● Send one volunteer from each small group out of the room (have a leader stay with them to make
sure they stay they’re nearby, but aren’t looking in the room). ● Place each of the three “secret” objects inside a paper bag, but let the rest of the kids see
what they are first. Once the objects are safely in the bags, call the volunteers back into the room. Make sure they can’t see inside the bags yet, and blindfold each of them.
● Next, while blindfolded, let each kid stick their hands into the bag and feel whatever is inside. They should think to themselves what it is, but don’t say what they think it is until ALL the volunteers have had a chance to feel.
● Once they’ve each felt the object, ask each of them what they THINK it is. Then, reveal what it really is!
● Give points to each team according to who got closest (for example, 1 full point if they got it right, 1/2 point if they got close–you can be flexible with this).
● Play up to three rounds of this game, each time sending a different volunteer from each small group to be the volunteer “feeler”.
SUPPLIES● Three bags with secret objects:
○ Bag 1= 5 marshmallows (reused)○ Bag 2= handful of feathers (reused)○ Bag 3= 5 olives (put these on the provided container inside the bag)
*there are extra bags/olives for a new set if your site has services on the following day!● Blindfolds (1 per small group, reused)

Ask kids: ● Say: We all feel worried sometimes. But no matter what happens to make us feel afraid, God is
always, always, ALWAYS with us. We can trust him to take care of us!● Ask:
○ List as many “scary” things as you can think of!○ What does God want us to do when we feel afraid or worried about something?○ Who do you go to when you’re feeling scared, worried, nervous, anxious, etc?
● Do:○ Give each kid a blank face template and markers. Have kids draw the emotion on the
blank character faces that match the part of the story you’re telling!○ Read each part of Joseph’s story on the back of the template.○ Pause after each bullet point where it says “draw and expression”, and let kids draw a facial
expression on a blank face that matches how they think that character would feel!○ Remind kids to write their name on their page and leave it in their small group area.

● Say: Let’s go over our big idea again:● Slide: We can trust God when we’re afraid.● Say: Let’s check out a video and hear some kids talking about their fears and
anxieties. You might hear some things that you’re familiar with!● Video: Kids Talk About Fear (0:00-2:04)● Say: Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt worried about something. (Let kids
respond.) Yep, everyone feels this way sometimes, whether you’re a kid or an adult! Sometimes it’s as simple as facing the unknown, or having to do something you’ve never done before. (Leader: Share an age appropriate, personal story about a time when you felt worried, but you trusted God, and he took care of you.)
● Say: So how do we know we can trust God? Because He created us. He loves us. He knows us better than anyone. And He is always, ALWAYS with us! That means we never have to face anything alone, and He will never leave us.
● Say: Now the question is...HOW do we trust God? Let’s do something fun to help us understand: a trust fall! (Demonstrate the following with a volunteer, or have two volunteers demonstrate for you.)
● Say: I’m going to have you stand in front of me, stuff-straight with your arms crossed in front of you. Now, even though you can’t see behind you, and even though it’s scary, I want you to fall backwards, and let me catch you! (Perform the trust fall, then connect it to what it means to trust God.)
● Say: You see, just like this person trusted that I would catch them, even though they couldn’t see or feel me behind them...that’s what it’s like to trust God! It means we believe he will take care of us, even if we don’t know exactly how he’ll do it, and even if we’re afraid or worried.
● Say: Let’s worship God for always being with us. Try to listen closely to these words and think about what you need to trust God with!
● Music Video: More Like You Are● Music Video: God Made a Way● Say: Let’s read our memory verse for this month! ● Slide: Ecclesiastes 3:4 There is a time to cry. And there’s a time to
laugh. There is a time to be sad. And there’s a time to dance!● Say: Remember, ALL our emotions and feelings come from God, and it’s okay
to feel them! But God wants us to learn how to rely on him to help us deal with those feelings in the right way, instead of letting our feelings control us.
● Pray for the room, or invite a kid up to pray for you!
There is a time to cry. And there’s a time to laugh. There is a time to be sad. And there’s a time to dance!

Fight fear by giving thanks to God!● When we feel afraid, a good way to trust God and overcome our fear is by giving thanks to Him!
When we stop and thank God for what he’s done, it’s a simple way to trust him, and show him that only HE can help us get through that scary thing. So as soon as you catch yourself feeling afraid, stop and say thank you to God for something. Let’s practice!
● Give kids a few seconds to think of something they’re scared of or worried about. Once they’ve got it in their head, let them say, “Thank you God!” If they’re old enough, encourage them to thank God for a specific thing in their life (their family, their friends, etc)
Joseph Craft● Help kids retell today’s story by making a Joseph craft! Give each kid a Joseph coat template, a
sheet of stickers, and 5 fabric squares. Set out markers, scissors and glue sticks.● Let kids decorate Joseph and his colorful coat using their materials. They can make all kinds of
patterns and designs to cover the coat!
Play Fear Charades Give each kid a quarter sheet of paper and have them write down or draw a picture of a common fear that people have (heights, clowns, spiders, etc.) Let kids fold the papers up and put them in a paper bag. Let kids take turns drawing a paper from the bag and acting it out or the rest of the group to guess!

(As the leader, share your example first!)● What kinds of things might Joseph have been afraid of or worried about?● How did Joseph trust God when he was going through really hard or scary things?● What can we do when we feel scared or worried about something?● How do we know that we can trust God?● Leader: Share an age-appropriate, personal story about a time when you felt worried,
but God took care of you.
