We Gather for Fellowship Coffee/Donut Fellowship

Rev. Richard Dwyer

Minister of Music and Organist

‘Twas a long time ago in a faraway place on October 31, 1517, in

Wittenberg, Saxony, that a German professor of theology, Martin Luther,

nailed his Ninety-five Theses to a church door. This act heralded the

beginning of the Protestant Reformation and also was the impetus for great

congregational singing within these newly formed churches. Luther’s new

congregations had no hymnody so he himself located appropriate secular

melodies and composed sacred words to these common songs. Luther is

quoted as saying, “Why should the devil have all the good music?” One of

his most well-known hymns is “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God.” It is often

said that the melody was taken from a rather famous “drinking song” that

Luther heard in the taverns located throughout his town. Now, each

generation of Christians has added new, fresh melodies, harmonies and

words to the body of church hymnody as new hymnals are produced with

music that touches the heart, soul, mind and spirit.

We have reached the point in our congregation when we are preparing to

purchase new hymnals that will provide a basis for our hymn singing for

years to come. The new hymnal will provide a variety of the favorite

hymns and gospel songs for our congregation with a musical witness of our

faith.

From the time I was diagnosed, had surgery, and have been experiencing

radiation, I have felt great peace and reassurance that God is very present

and walks with me through this experience. I attribute this peace to the

many prayers offered in my behalf by the many loved ones in our

radiation. I am half way through my treatments and my last one will be

Reaching Out in Our New Community by Mary Anne Pollock

We have a wonderful opportunity to be of service in our new community on

Liberty Road. Liberty Elementary School (LES) is just a short distance

from our new location, and provides an outreach into this area of Lexington.

The principal, Gerry Brooks, is very eager to have volunteers in the school

to help with a variety of needs.

Any school is eager to have help with the many tasks that help both teachers

and children. Some possibilities are:

-Running copies

-Cutting, laminating, collating, and other tasks related to preparing

instructional materials for teachers

-Being present for children to read to you

-Reading to children

-Help in the classroom as guided by the teachers

-Providing instruction as needed by the teachers

-Tutoring in reading and other language arts, social studies, science, and

Math

You can see that tasks range from the very simple but necessary to those

which require more direct work with children. All are important!!!!

Additionally, we would like to provide support/recognition/appreciation for

the faculty and staff at LES as needed.

Please think about ways you can help the school for an hour or longer on a

regular, weekly basis. The time you choose to volunteer is completely

flexible within your schedule; however, your commitment must be just that

– a commitment to be at the school at the same time each week. Children,

teachers, and staff will depend on you! Working directly with children

occurs between 7:45 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Other tasks are available from 6:30

a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

Anyone entering a school must complete a criminal background check,

which is a very simple process, and the LES website provides a link. I did

mine last week and was notified the next day that my check had been

completed. That pesky speeding ticket from 10 years ago showed up, even

though I went to Traffic School. (Bath County on I-64 is a speed trap,

particularly near the end of the month!) I am sure most of you will be

squeaky clean!!! If you plan to volunteer, I suggest you complete this

process early. The link to the LES site is liberty.fcps.net. Click on parents,

then on volunteer, and the application will pop up. The form is self-

explanatory except for the employment button. It does not give an option

for retired or unemployed. Skip that, and at the end of the form, you will be

directed to go back to that item and select “Select.” You cannot do that

until you have completed the form. If you have any questions or difficulty,

contact me (606-776-2194), and I will try to help you.

Please think of a task you would like to contribute to LES, do your

background check, and sign up on the sheet in the entryway to let me know

what you would like to help with!! We should be ready to begin

volunteering immediately after Labor Day when routines and enrollment at

the school have settled.

Our presence in the school and our name badges showing we are from

Liberty Road Faith Fellowship will clearly state that we are eager to help as

well as letting residents know we are Liberty Road Faith Fellowship!

Ann Holt’s Last Day at LRFF is Approaching…

Funds collected in honor of Ann Holt’s retirement will be donated to the

Living Arts and Science Center where Ann has served for a number of

years.

The Living Arts and Science Center reflects the ambitious vision expressed

in its name. LASC is intentionally located in the east end of Lexington to

give local residents access to classes and exhibits within the neighborhood.

From a modest beginning 50 years ago, the Center has grown, expanded

class offerings and area of service to a large part of Central Kentucky.

Presently a modern, multi-purpose addition to the property is nearing

completion which will allow for more classes, exhibits, and events. The

new space includes Lexington’s only planetarium which is expected to be

both educational and inspirational for the students. To learn more about

LASC go to www.lasclex.org.

Ann’s last day at Liberty Road Faith Fellowship is Friday, July 29. But we

will see Ann at Fifth Sundays and other times. She’s made a lasting

impression in our hearts and I think she likes us pretty good too, so we will

definitely keep in touch!
