The Aerial Reconnaissance Weather Officer, ARWO, also known as Weatherbird software, is maintained by a team here. The team also supports Ground Based Station software at the National Hurricane Center, in Miami, Fla., and Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Miss. ARWO mission software is used on WC-130J “Hurricane Hunters,” operated by the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron at Keesler. ARWO is one of many software and communication lines used aboard the aircraft, which collects data used to provide information such as storm intensity. The study, which began in 2008, identified 10 priority areas across the base which, upon completion, will elimi- nate or reduce flooding by storm waters, particularly on the flight line and roadways on the southwest side of the base where traffic is heavy. Proposed improvements include the upgrading or replacement of existing pipes, abandonment of exist- ing pipes, installation of additional pipes or box cul- verts, the steepening or reversal of existing pipe gra- dients, widening of existing drainage ditches, installation of lightweight bridges, and other projects. One priority area is located on the flightline between Taxiways B and H. Any standing water can affect air- craft and airfield operations, said Kenneth Scruggs, 778th Civil Engineer Squadron proj- ect manager. The study’s solution includes the installa- tion of a box culvert to pro- vide added capacity for drain pipes in the area, as well as replacing old drainage. Other projects, some possi- bly projected to start as early as this year or as late as 2020, would repair or replace exist- ing storm drains, refurbish retention ponds, install new culverts, and repair or replace channels along heavy-traffic roads. All proposed project areas include drainage of water that will eventually empty into the Ocmulgee River watershed. ROBINS TAKES ON MILITARY CHALLENGE Flags at half staff The flags at Robins flew at half-staff earlier this week as a mark of respect for the victims of the Colorado theater shoot- ing. The President ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from July 20 through Wednesday at sunset on all federal buildings and naval vessels throughout the United States and abroad. AFRC Change of Command Air Force Reserve Command leadership will change hands Monday at 9 a.m. when Lt. Gen. James Jackson takes command from Lt. Gen. Charles Stenner Jr. during a ceremony at the Museum of Aviation’s Century of Flight Hangar. Jackson, who is currently deputy to the chief of Air Force Reserve, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., will become chief of Air Force Reserve and commander of Air Force Reserve Command. One role in particular is that of the Individual Mobilization Augmentee. Their efforts pro- vide an invaluable resource that supports virtually every mission in the Air Force. The IMA workforce is as diverse as the jobs they perform. At Robins, there are cur- rently 171 IMAs assigned to carry out various duties in crit- ical areas such as aircraft maintenance, acquisition, engi- neering, contracting, personnel and installation management. IMAs are seasoned veterans who maintain their training and competencies to be pre- pared to support critical opera- tions when the call comes. As its name implies, these men and women provide important experience and knowledge to the units they are assigned, and can be ready to work whenev- er and wherever their assis- tance is needed. Master Sgt. Anthony McCranie is a former IMA with the Defense Logistics Agency, and is currently an air transportation craftsman with the 78th Logistics Readiness Squadron. A former member of the Army National Guard, the Rhine, Ga., native explained it’s the flexibility of being an IMA he enjoys most. “That’s probably the num- ber one draw for everyone,” he said. “Instead of having one set weekend per month tradi- tionally, we work with an active duty supervisor to schedule our training and annual tour. “It’s not a well-known pro- gram,” he continued. “It’s a very small part of the Reserve community. job here for many years and is a pro-gram manager with War ReserveMateriel, working in an area that sup-ports deployment activities. As an IMA,he’s a Reservist assigned to an active

duty squadron.A supply management craftsman with

the 560th Aircraft Maintenance Squad-ron, Master Sgt. Geraldine Lovell willretire in September after 26 years ofservice. She was active duty Air Forcefor 12 years, and has served at Robinsfor the past eight after transferring fromanother unit as a traditional Reservist.IMAs work with civilian and military

supervisors, and enjoy a flexible sched-ule under the approving nod of thosethey work for.“My primary focus at Robins is to

provide support equipment to the main-tenance wing mechanics and techni-cians, and ensure they accomplish theirmission to return aircraft to the warfight-er on time and under budget,” saidLovell.James Depew is a civilian logistics

manager in F-15s in the 409th SupplyChain Management Squadron. Herecently deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan,where he was responsible for reviewing,validating, verifying and coordinatingfinancial and equipment-related transac-tions between U.S. forces, all coalition

forces in country, and Afghan Defenseforces.“As an IMA, I came to Robins in

2003, and am currently with the GRUSOF office as the superintendent (chiefmaster sergeant),” said Depew. “I’veaccomplished tasks from performingverifications and inspections for majormodification programs to engaging inpersonnel management actions.”IMAs will continue to serve across

the force. They will also continue toplay important roles in the Team Robinsof the future.

and consolidate overhead, and improvethe way AFMC does its mission andsupport to the warfighter. The effortwill reportedly save about $109 millionannually.

EC-130J Commando Solo software. The GBS soft-ware used on the aircraft allows the user to viewwhat the ARWO sees while in the air collectingdata. The system can handle data from and track upto five aircraft.The software was transferred to Robins in April

2011; it was formerly maintained by Lockheed Martin.The team from the 580th Software Maintenance

Squadron includes Khristine Vullo, project softwaremanager; Jim Belcher, Alex Chen and Michael Vining,software developers; Aimee Hunt, configuration man-ager; and Stephen Lee, test lead engineer.“It feels great to be part of a project that is vital to

saving lives and property,” said Vullo.Lee admitted he gets a kick out of watching

Hurricane Hunter specials on television, realizing howamazing and important the technology is. He explainedthat being able to see graphs and trends through thesoftware allows experts to predict and interpret data inmultiple ways.His primary responsibility is to ensure that the soft-

ware works as expected; in particular, it does notadversely affect other functions.The team performs software modifications as need-

ed, maintains and implements automated test scripts,and performs live testing off-site in coordination withthe NHC and Keesler, all while keeping up with thelatest software development tools in the field.One example of what the team does includes imple-

menting and maintaining changes to the software’smessage structure as defined by the National Oceanicand Atmospheric Administration. Data collected byWC-130J equipment is processed by the software intoweather messages, which includes vortex (hurricaneeye), reconnaissance, high density observation anddropsonde buoy observations.As a plane is flying within a tropical storm or hurri-

cane, the software is monitoring and capturing weath-er-related data, which is displayed on a screen numeri-cally and graphically. The aircraft then transmits thisdata to ground-based stations, and NOAAmakes thedata available online for everyone, including forecast-ers and meteorologists at the NHC.Another example of the software is performing

checks on a course-correction indicator. Maintainingand testing this feature allows the ARWO to correctly

convey to the pilot where he should fly to find the cen-ter of a storm.Being a part of such an important mission is not lost

on the team, which is currently working to build alocal software integration lab for development and test-ing purposes.“We are honored and privileged to be sustaining

software that has tremendous success in predictingtropical storms and hurricanes,” said Vullo.

Air Force running goes digitalBeginning Sept. 1, Air Force medical officials willtake new strides to get Airmen running safely.The Air Force Telehealth Office will conduct a six-month study to investigate the outcome and effi-ciency of online running instruction.The study will examine the effectiveness of anewly-developed set of computer-based trainingmodules that is currently in the final stages of test-ing and expected to be available to Airmen soon,officials said.One year ago, Army leadership banned the use of"toe shoes" during in-uniform physical training ses-sions, after encountering a change in Soldier'sclothing habits.Air Force policies have taken a slightly differentturn. While no running technique is officiallyendorsed or any particular style of running or run-ning shoe mandated, officials said they recognizethat wear of minimalist shoes, with flat, flexiblesoles that lack traditional cushioning, has increasedamong Airmen. Air Force’s national museum to receiveNASA’s 1st Crew Compartment TrainerAfter many months of intensive planning, the firststeps have been put in motion to move NASA’s firstShuttle Crew Compartment Trainer from JohnsonSpace Center to the National Museum of the U.S. AirForce.CCT-1, which was one of three trainers built to trainastronauts for space missions, is scheduled to arrive

at the museum, at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base,Ohio, later this summer.For more than 30 years, CCT-1 was housed inJohnson Space Center’s Space Vehicle MockupFacility in Houston. It was used to train crews fromSTS-1 through STS-135 as a high-fidelity representa-tion of the Space Shuttle Orbiter crew station. Usingthe trainer, astronauts learned how to operate many ofthe orbiter sub-systems in more than 20 differentclasses.

In order to prepare the more than 24,000-poundtrainer for its flight to the museum, engineers firstneeded to design a specialized adapter to allow it tobe transported on NASA’s Super Guppy aircraft.According to Jill MacGregor, Space Vehicle MockupFacility mockup manager, planning to move an objectthat wasn’t designed to be moved again after it hadarrived at Johnson Space Center has proven quitechallenging.“The most difficult part of moving the CCT-1 is coor-dinating all of the different parties involved," saidMacGregor. "You've got folks from Johnson SpaceCenter transportation who are going to box-up all ofthe small items; you've got JSC Riggers who do all ofthe lifting and the truck moves; you have aircraft load-masters and engineers who have to be involved withhow to orient the trainer into the aircraft, how to chainit down and how to analyze all of the loads to makesure it flies safely."To read more, visit www.af.mil.

I would like to take a momentto tell you about an incident thathappened July 17. As we wereall coming to work, an automo-bile and motorcycle accidentoccurred on Ga. Highway 247,just north of theAir NationalGuard Gate.

I pulled up as the “smoke wasclearing” and observed a femalemilitary member coming to theaid of the motorcycle rider, whowas laying in the middle of theroad.

I went over to the two ofthem and asked several questionsto ensure we had the right infor-mation for the emergencyresponders. That’s when I metTech. Sgt. Tracie Gross.

Gross was doing everythingshe could to comfort the motor-cyclist during his time of dis-tress. I recognized the motorcy-clist as a Robins employee aswell, and in talking with himremembered he is a civilian inthe 78th Civil EngineerSquadron. His name is RandallMarkham.

The On Spot Cafe is cookingup changes to the restaurant,aimed at keeping customershappy.

The café, which opened aspart of the Robins BowlingCenter in 1964, is receiving newfloors and new walls to enhance,upgrade and modernize theeatery.

A reorganized cooking linewith new equipment wasdesigned to improve customerflow and service.

Additionally, the cafe willreceive an upgraded and mod-ernized front service counter andnew menu boards to better serveits customers. Reconfiguredseating with new furniture willcomplete the new look.

Tessie Price, On Spot Cafemanager for more than 20 years,said the updates are long over-due.

“I feel that modernization ofa facility is a key to the successof any business,” she said. “Wehope this renovation willimprove our quality of service,and that our customers will

enjoy the new atmosphere dur-ing their meal times.”

Dan Bueno, Robins BowlingCenter manager, said the nearly$200,000 project, supported byAir Force Materiel Commandnon-appropriated funds, beganin late June and is expected tobe complete within a fewmonths.

“We hope that the renova-tions to the On the Spot Caféwill make mealtimes for ourcustomers more efficient byimproving traffic flow not only

for our customers, but for ouremployees as well,” he said.“Providing efficient customerservice is important as we striveto improve our customers’ expe-rience and satisfaction.”

Local contractors and thebowling center staff are workingvarious parts of the project,Bueno said.

Current changes aren’t thefirst the cafe has undergonesince its start.

The snack bar underwent anextensive expansion in the 1970sand a minor facelift in the early1990s.

Although the cafe is tem-porarily closed for renovations,its staff is satisfying customers’appetites by moving its opera-tions outdoors in front of thecenter.

“We are still grilling ourfamous super burgers and offer-ing a limited menu for you tochoose from,” said Bueno.“Check back with us, as we willalso be offering barbecue spe-cials in the weeks to come. Tips to avoid heat-related illnessIt’s a hot, humid

Saturday. You’ve beensoaking up the sun at thebeach all day and playingsoccer with your friends.

You suddenly start tofeel nauseous and weak.Your vision begins to tun-nel. The next thing youknow you wake up on agurney in the emergencyroom. The doctor saysyou’ve been diagnosedwith heat exhaustion. Howdid this happen?

Heat illness can affectanyone at any time, butwe’re most vulnerable in

the United States duringthe summer months. Otherthan temperature, humidityis one of the biggest fac-tors in heat illness.

That’s because highhumidity can preventsweat from evaporating,thus causing the body’scooling system to fail.

The two most commontypes of heat illness areheat exhaustion and heatstroke. Heat exhaustionoccurs when you’reexposed to high tempera-tures and the body can’tcool itself sufficiently. You

begin to dehydrate due toexcessive sweating. Somesymptoms include: nausea,vomiting and musclecramps. Heat stroke typi-cally occurs after you’vereached the point of heatexhaustion. The problem isthat you don’t cool down.Basically, your core bodytemperature continues torise, which could causedamage to your brain, kid-neys and muscles.

Delaying emergencytreatment can also lead toother severe complicationsand possibly death. If you

think someone is suffering fromheat exhaustion or stroke, call 911.Move the person to a cooler areaand remove their outer clothing.Fan and mist the person with water,and provide cool drinking water.

Taking preventive measures isthe key to avoiding heat illness.Supervisors are responsible for pro-viding training. Other preventivemeasures include: making sureworkers have access to water, pay-ing attention to the heat index (tem-perature + humidity) and providingrest periods in shaded or air-condi-tioned areas.

lines bring news of yetanother alcohol-relatedtragedy involving a youngperson – a case of fatalalcohol poisoning on acollege campus or a late-night crash involvingdrinking.

People ages 18 to 25are at higher risk thananyone else for problemsinvolving alcohol.

It’s not only that youngpeople are drinking butit’s the way they drinkthat puts them at such ahigh risk for alcohol-relat-ed problems. Researchconsistently shows peopletend to drink the heaviestin their late teens andearly to mid-twenties.

Young adults are espe-cially likely to binge.Binge drinking is definedas consuming five ormore drinks in a row atleast once in the pastmonth.

The recommendeddaily limits for moderatealcohol consumption areno more than two drinksfor men or one drink forwomen.

According to theNational Institute onAlcohol Abuse andAlcoholism, men may beat risk for alcohol-relatedproblems if their alcoholconsumption exceeds 14standard drinks per weekor three drinks per day,and women may be at riskif they drink more thanseven standard drinks perweek or two drinks perday.

A standard drink isdefined as one 12-oz. bot-tle of beer, one 5-oz. glassof wine, or 1.5 oz. of dis-tilled spirits.

Tolerance to AlcoholAlcohol tolerance can

lead someone with a dan-gerously-high consump-tion rate to be falsely reas-sured that as long as they

don’t feel drunk, they willbe fine. The reverse is true.Needing a lot of alcohol toget drunk proves that youare already drinking toomuch, too often.

Alcohol tolerance canbe compared to a lack ofthe ability to feel pain. Ifyou didn’t feel pain, youwouldn’t immediatelyremove your hand from ahot stove and notice it wasburned until it was toolate.

If you have developeda tolerance for alcohol,you can no longer trustyour body’s signals to tellyou when you’ve had toomuch. Being able to “holdyour liquor” is a sign oftolerance – and risk – not abragging right.

You may consider notdrinking at all – everyoneisn’t doing it.
