Jacksonville: LHP Justin Nicolino (0-1, 12.00) vs. Montgomery: RHP Jake Thompson (7-9, 4.96) Jacksonville: RHP Matt Neil (1-2, 4.02) vs. Montgomery: LHP Enny Romero (9-4, 2.87) Games #99 and #100 – Road Games #50 and #51 (24-25) Last Game: The Jacksonville Suns (16-15, 50-48) dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Montgomery Biscuits (15-17, 52-50), losing 6-1 in the series opener and 4-2 in the nightcap at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery. The doubleheader was one of two consecutive twin bills between the two teams, as the first two scheduled days of the series were washed away by rain. Each game lasted just seven innings. Game one pitted Jacksonville’s Anthony DeSclafani (2-2) against Montgomery right-hander Michael Colla (4-1), and Colla got the better of the Suns’ young righty. The Biscuits scored three times against DeSclafani in the bottom of the first and three more times in the sixth against Suns reliever Scott McGough, while Colla allowed Chris Gutierrez’s sixth inning solo homer and nothing else. DeSclafani finished his night after four innings in the loss, surrendering three earned runs on five hits with just one strikeout and one walk. The Suns jumped out to an early lead in the nightcap of the doubleheader on Zack Cox’s first inning RBI double. Jacksonville then added to the lead in the second, taking a 2-0 advantage on Danny Black’s infield single RBI. After a swift beginning, Suns starter Robert Morey (4-7) stumbled in the bottom of the fourth. Leading 2-1, Morey allowed three runs, scoring on six consecutive two-out hits including Evan Frey’s go-ahead RBI single. By the time the dust cleared, the Biscuits led the Suns by two runs. Derek Dietrich finished 0-for-3 in both games in his return to the Suns lineup after a multi-month stint in the Major Leagues with the Miami Marlins. Mark Canha continued his hot streak with a pair of 2-for-3 performances. Braulio (2-1) Lara picked up the win for Montgomery with two innings of one hit, no run relief. UPCOMING SCHEDULE AND PROBABLE PITCHING MATCHUPS DATE OPP. TIME SUNS STARTER BISCUITS STARTER Sat. July 27 @MTG 7:35 p.m. ET To Be Announced To Be Announced NEWS AND NOTES Roster Moves: Outfielder Isaac Galloway has been transferred to Jacksonville from High-A Jupiter. In 89 contests for the Hammerheads this season, the 23-year- old has accumulated a .271 average (94-347), adding five homers and 40 RBI. Galloway was a Florida State League Midseason All-Star, and led the Hammerheads in hits home runs and RBI at the time of his promotion to the Suns. Galloway was selected by the Marlins in the eighth round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of Los Osos High School (Calif.). Canha Can’t Stop: Mark Canha continues to do what he wants at the plate, he won’t stop. With multi-hit games in both games of last night’s doubleheader, Canha has hit safely in his last five games at the plate and has hits in 14 of his last 20 at-bats, one of the most dominant stretches you’ll see for a Southern League hitter during the 2013 season. Over his last 10 games, Canha is hitting .459 (17-for-37) with three homers, 10 RBI, and four doubles. Canha, who hit .230 in June, is now hitting .379 in July with three homers and 12 RBI in 19 games played. Dietrich Hitless in Return to Suns: Second baseman Derek Dietrich went a combined 0-for-6 at the plate in last night’s doubleheader in Montgomery, striking out three times. Dietrich was added to the Suns roster from the Major League Miami Marlins on Monday, and in the big leagues was hitting .214 with nine homers and 16 RBI. Dietrich began the season with the Jacksonville Suns, and earned his first promotion to the Marlins on May 8, collecting his first big league hit later that day in San Diego. This series is also a homecoming for Dietrich, having played with the Montgomery Biscuits last season as a member of the Tampa Bay Rays organization. Gutierrez Gone: Chris Gutierrez connected on his first home run in over a year during the first game of the doubleheader in Montgomery. Gutierrez hit a solo homer completely out of the Riverwalk Stadium over the left field wall beyond the train tracks, a solo shot off Michael Colla in the sixth inning of the game Jacksonville lost 6-1. It was the first homer for Gutierrez since July 4, 2012 at Tennessee, and his fourth with the Jacksonville Suns over the past three years. Gutierrez has 14 career homers in 840 games played, and last night’s start in left field for game two of the doubleheader was also his first ever start in the outfield. With the Lugnuts he went 10-4 with a 2.46 ERA in 28 games pitched and 22 starts in 124.1 innings on the mound. His 2.46 ERA was the lowest of any Midwest League qualifying pitcher that season as well as posting the league’s lowest WHIP at 1.07. At times he “piggybacked” with other starters. 2011 Highlights: In his first professional season, Nicolino began the year with Vancouver going 5-1 with a 1.03 ERA in 12 games and nine starts in the Northwest League. He would finish the season making three starts in the Midwest League, going 1-1 with a 3.12 with the Lansing Lugnuts. He was committed to the University of Virginia where he planned on getting a business degree. Signed with the Blue Jays for a $615,000 bonus. Was asked to pitch for Team Italy in the 2013 World Baseball Classic but declined due to desire to get integrated into the Marlins organization. Grandfather is Italian, that’s why he could’ve pitched for Team Italia. Grew up going to a few Marlins games at Sun Life Stadium, three hours away from Orlando.
