FRS 2-WAY Radios, aka
Walkie Talkies, are
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Radios are the best way to stay in
touch with your fellow MINIacs
during the rides!
Radios are available from all your
favorite electronics vendors! No
need to spend lots of money, a
Cobra set for $40 from Walmart
will work fine! Just make sure it’s
an FRS set, with channels and
sub-channels. Set to Channel 7
sub 21.
Don’t use VOX! You’d be sharing
your business and song stylings
with EVERYONE! You don’t want
that!
What to Bring!
MINI(s) and/or Mini(s). It’s a car rally after all!
2-Way FRS Radio (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!) with car charger and/or extra batteries. Set to Channel 7 sub 21. See sidebar.
Sunblock, Sunglasses & a Hat. Although the air is cool, the sun is intense at 7,025 feet!
Bottled water or refillable bottles. Staying hydrated is the best way to combat altitude sickness.
Snacks. Your favorite snacks to keep the “hangry” at bay during long rides and to share with fellow MINIacs.
Cooler for your picnic lunches/road snacks/drive-in snacks.
Camera for those MINI sightings, and wildlife sightings, and mountain sightings.
Rain Gear. Brief afternoon showers are fairly common.
Warm Clothes/Jackets. Evening temperatures average 50°F.
Closed-toe shoes. The Drive-in is unpaved! Save your tootsies for driving!
Emergency kit with at least a flashlight, blanket, and first aid supplies.
Chairs (seating is limited or unavailable so bringing your own is best).
Car Washing Stuff – your favorite towels, etc. Prima Car Care wash soap, water, and some wash mitts will be provided at the Do-It-Yourself Car Wash. Microfiber towels will also be available for purchase at Check-in. $1 each.
Windshield/Window cleaning stuff. You’ll want clean windows to enjoy the beautiful Colorado scenery! Psst… Microfiber towels will be available for $1 at Check-in.
Battery operated FM Radio. The Drive-In offers FM radio sound – bring a radio so you don’t have to keep your MINI on!
The Sun, the Blue Sky, and Altitude
There is about 30% more ultraviolet radiation at 7,000 feet than at sea level. Always wear eye
and skin protection. The air is thinner and less oxygen is available. People with respiratory or
circulatory illnesses should consult a physician before coming to this altitude. Our high, dry air
accelerates dehydration. Drink plenty of water. People coming from lower elevations may
experience altitude sickness. This usually occurs within the first 48 hours, with headaches, nausea,
insomnia, and loss of appetite. The best remedy is to take it easy your first day here: increase fluid
intake; decrease salt, alcohol, and caffeine intake; and select high-carbohydrate, low-fat foods. Be
aware that high elevation can also accentuate existing health problems. Seek medical assistance if
problems persist or get worse.

we’ve made arrangements to provide a Do-It-Yourself Car Wash at the Baymont Inn!
The Baymont is at 7400 West US Highway 50, Salida, CO 81201. The Car Wash will be located at
the back of the parking lot. (Not in the trees, but in the shade from the trees!)
The Car Wash is FREE! Try out Prima Car Care’s
Wash Soap while getting all that motoring grime off your
MINI!
Water provided by the Baymont.
Buckets and some wash mitts provided by MINI5280.

MITM2019 Parade, Group Photo, and Drive-In Movie
Sponsored by MINI of Loveland
Thursday – Depart from Salida Middle School Parking Lot – 6:00pm-11:00pm
Leaving at 6 PM Sharp!
We've secured a night at the Comanche Drive-In Theatre in Buena Vista for a new to MITM event!
Thanks to MINI of Loveland, we get a night out at the movies!
We will parade our MINIs through downtown Salida and onto Buena Vista to a showing of The
Italian Job on Thursday evening... our treat! Concessions will be open, and well-behaved, leashed
pets are welcome!
The official MITM2019 Group Photo will be taken prior to the movie. Feel free to bring drones!
About the Comanche Drive-in… The Comanche Drive-In is located three miles west of Buena Vista,
Colorado on Highway 306. It is one of about 335 drive-ins left in the country, and one of eight
remaining in Colorado.
Nestled at the head of the Arkansas Valley, at an elevation of 8000 ft, surrounded by magnificent
peaks, the Comanche is not only noted for its beautiful views, but is also the highest in elevation of
any drive-in in the United States. The Comanche was built in 1966 by John and Pearl Groy, and had
its first full season in 1967. It has remained a family business since that time.

RIDES
Know Before You Go!
All Featured Rides will be led by a volunteer Drive Leader, who will be wearing a red t-shirt. Join the MITM Facebook page and the Facebook event for each ride you’re interested in to get the latest updates, including day-of updates. See the page for each Featured Ride for the route, departure time, and other details.
All MITM routes provide approximate trip distances and times, including time for rest stops and photo opportunities. Trip times are estimated at posted speeds. Familiarize yourself with the route before leaving. Take your time and enjoy the scenery!
All Featured Rides will depart from the Salida Middle School Parking Lot, Milford Street, Salida, CO 81201. Please arrive 20-30 minutes early for line up and drivers meeting. Wheels rolling at designated start time! Bring a full tank of gas, and empty bladders!
Drive at your own comfort level (slower/less experienced in front, faster/more experienced in back). No need to keep entire group together (know your direction), although the Drive Leader and Sweep will monitor the group and work to keep the group together if possible.
The Drive Leader will communicate with the group using FRS two-way radios set to Channel 7 Sub 21. If you do get lost; don’t be afraid to stop and ask for directions. Most of our rides will travel through populated areas eventually but be prepared for long stretches of open road.
Keep water and an emergency kit with at least a flashlight, blanket, and first aid supplies in your car. Don’t drink and drive.
Traffic Laws and Enforcement
You’re responsible for your driving choices. We recommend that you always obey traffic signs and posted speed limits and always drive in a safe, courteous manner. Take the reduced speed limits through the small towns seriously. Many small towns in Colorado generate a tremendous amount of revenue through traffic law enforcement. Slow down, smile and wave, and have fun generating some great motoring memories!
Bicyclists, Rocks & Wildlife!
The wildlife in Colorado is super cute and SUPER wild! Don’t approach wildlife for a photo; use the awesome zoom built into your phone/camera! Please, please, please stay alert on the roads. Most of the time, deer are the losers in deer vs. MINI, but the MINI and its occupants will suffer all of the time. Lastly, it is illegal to feed the wildlife in Colorado!
Watch for rocks! Mountains are made from rock, and sometimes rocks fall and land on the road! Always assume there is one right around that next corner and right where you want to go.
Share the Road! Bicyclists in Colorado love our mountain roads just as much as we do. It’s Colorado law to provide at least 3 feet of distance from the side of the car to the bicyclist when passing. Please allow more room if you can! Slow down if there’s traffic and only pass bicyclists when it’s safe to do so (for you and them!).

St. Elmo's Fire –
Countryman Drive

8:00am-12:00pm
Ride Leader: Rhonda Johnson
Distance: 65 miles
Duration: 4 hours (including stops)
We will try to be back to Salida
before 1:00 so we can also join the
Poncha Springs Loop ride.
ALL ARE WELCOME ON THIS RIDE, HOWEVER, PLEASE BE AWARE THERE ARE 12 MILES
OF DIRT ROADS (ROUND TRIP). The roads are very well maintained and any but the lowest
lowered MINIs will be fine!
This drive is gorgeous! We will leave Salida and head straight to Mt. Princeton and pass by the
Chalk Cliffs (Google them!!), then drive through some beautiful roads way back into the mountains
to St. Elmo. St. Elmo sits at an elevation of 9,961 feet. Nearly 2,000 people settled in this town
when mining for gold and silver started. The community is listed on the National Register of Historic
Places as the St. Elmo Historic District. It is one of Colorado's best-preserved ghost towns. The
General Store is open to visitors, so we will spend a bit of time in town and check out their wares.

THANKS!
MITM2019 Farewell Coffee & Donuts
Sunday - Gateway Inn & Suites – 7:30am – 10:00am
Stop by the MINI5280 Club tent at the Gateway Inn and Suites to grab a cup of java and a yummy
donut before you head out. Join us to bid a fond farewell to new friends and old!
From MINI5280’s President… I would like to first thank all the wonderful people that took the time to help out this year with MINIs
in the Mountains. This is such a huge event and organizing it takes so much time and effort, and our
volunteers go above and beyond to help out. I am truly appreciative of all the time, effort, and miles
that everyone has so generously given.
Thank you to all the MINI5280 club members. You all make this a really awesome group to be a part
of. Without all your excitement and enthusiasm for the event, no one outside of Denver would know
about MITM. Thank you all for spreading the word!
Thank you to everyone attending this year. We are so thankful you are choosing to spend your time
with us in Colorado. It's amazing how far some of you have traveled to get to our beautiful state.
We are grateful to you for your generosity and adventurous spirit!
Lastly, a final thank you to Debbie Ratliff! I harass you constantly and you always come back for
more. Thank you for kicking my butt into action this year and getting things done! I couldn't have
done this without your help. Thank you!!
Rhonda Johnson, MINI5280 President, MITM2019 Co-Coordinator
From MITM2019’s Co-Coordinator… I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to all the awesome volunteers working on MINIs
in the Mountains this year. There are not enough words to describe how grateful I am for your
dedication, compassion, and generous gift of time. Your planning, preparation, and attention to
detail was amazing; resulting in an outstanding event that will bring joy to all those that attend!
To the MINI5280 club members, thank you all! This is such a fun group to be part of – with so much
excitement and enthusiasm for all things MINI. There are no better ambassadors in getting the word
out about MITM than you!
To my husband David, thank you for putting up with all this, with me getting stressed out and for you
listening to some of my craziness. I am just the co-pilot in this awesome adventure; thanks for being
the pilot. Let’s Motor!
To all those attending MITM this year, thank you for joining us! It is our honor to have you here in
Colorado. I hope you all have an awesome time. Let’s do this! Let’s ride!
Debbie Ratliff, MITM2019 Co-Coordinator
