Groceries be gone.

Located near the Hudson River at 125th Street and 12th Avenue, the Fairway Market’s popular grocery store in Harlem is no more.

It closed its doors on Sun., July 19.The chain had faced financial difficulties

prior to the pandemic, having filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January. It marked the second time since 2016 that Fairway filed for bankruptcy.

Village Supermarket, Inc., which also owns Gourmet Garage shops and numerous ShopRite supermarkets, purchased four of Fairway’s stores in February and vowed to keep them open, but the Harlem site was not one of them.

About 160 union employees are losing their jobs due to the Harlem store’s closure. Fairway is also shutting down its corporate offices located around the corner from the market.

On July 17, employees held a press conference outside the store. About 15 workers emerged from the market and reported that they had been fired although the store’s closing was still a few days away.

“They said to punch out and go home, just like that,” said employee Johan

Rosa Rivera, who worked at the store for 23 years, said she was not being provided with any type of severance.

“I’m leaving empty-handed. I have nothing,” she said.

Lora expressed concern about finding other employment due to his age. “I’m 68 years old – who’s going to give me a job?” he remarked. “I don’t have money to retire.”

A new program aims to provide housing security to tenants

across the city facing hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Starting immediately, the Citywide Landlord-Tenant Mediation Project will serve hundreds of New Yorkers each month by addressing rent-related issues in a mediation setting, outside of the housing court system, with a focus on hardest-hit communities.

The non-profit Community Dispute Resolution Centers (CDRCs) will assist tenants and small landlords in finding solutions to rental issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The goal is to resolve cases before they reach litigation and avoid the long-term effects of an eviction proceeding which can lead to displacement for vulnerable tenants and limit future housing options, said de Blasio, who announced the program during a media briefing on Tuesday.

“The idea is to try and resolve problems outside of the court system, find a way to keep people in their homes in a better way,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio in his July 21st announcement.

“This work will continue to deepen

because we have to find ways to keep people in their homes,” he added.

Louise Carroll, Commissioner of the city’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD), said the program would prioritize 27

neighborhoods identified as the hardest hit by the coronavirus.

“It will help tenants solve issues with their landlords without the threat of eviction and

In a recent survey conducted by the Taskforce, nearly all respondents cited rent burden as a primary issue facing their communities.

The Mediation Project will be managed by CDRCs in coordination with HPD, the Mayor’s Office to Protect Tenants and the Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit, with support from the Human Resource Administration’s Office of Civil Justice (OCJ).

Eligible tenants will be referred to CDRCs in each borough, and each CDRC will manage case intake, provide mediation sessions and monitor case follow up for tenants.

“Secure housing has never been more crucial to our health and well-being than now, during this pandemic,” said J. Phillip Thompson, Deputy Mayor for Strategic Policy Initiatives and co-chair of the Taskforce on Racial Inclusion and Equity. “For families in hardest-hit communities struggling to afford rent each month, this new mediation tool will be invaluable in helping them resolve issues with their landlords without the threat of eviction.”

New York State Attorney General Letitia James has ordered three e-cigarette manufacturers — Cloud X Vapes, HQD Tech USA and PodVapes — to immediately cease and desist illegally selling vaping products online to consumers in New York.

According to James’ office, these companies illegally sold vaping products through their websites to New York consumers in violation of state law. In addition, they illegally sold products to minors, offering flavored nicotine

vaping products, including cotton candy, pineapple mist, green apple and others.

“Candy and fruit flavored vaping products exist to reel teens into the dangerous habit of smoking, which is why New York banned them,” said James in a statement. “It is shameful that these companies attempted to skirt the law through sneaky, illegal online sales. We will not hesitate to hold those who put our children at risk accountable for their unlawful actions.”

According to the New York State Department of Health, vaping use among teens has skyrocketed in recent years, and flavored vaping products have been named as a major cause of this increase.

New York State recently enacted additional legislation aimed at ending teen vaping — as of May, it is now illegal to sell flavored nicotine products in New York,

while a ban on online and mail order vape product sales went into effect on July 1.

James has taken several recent actions to curtail the use of nicotine among teens. In 2019, she filed a lawsuit against e-cigarette manufacturer JUUL Labs for deceptive marketing practices and also led a coalition of seven states in urging the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to take stronger action in addressing the rise in e-cigarette use among young people.

Coronavirus: John Lewis LivesThe year was 1965. Segregation was the

established law of the land in the south. Good old American Apartheid was in full and brutal effect in Dixie. Jim Crow, the Southern system of terror designed to subjugate Black people after Reconstruction, was rock solid and seemed like it would last forever. Codified into law, Black disenfranchisement was total and the order of the day.

Born to sharecroppers on February 21, 1940, in rural Troy, Alabama, John Lewis was born into a world where White supremacy and domination was absolute. Morally bankrupt but held in place by the participation and silence of the majority of whites in the south, the status quo relegated Black folks to permanent second-class status.

John Lewis was determined to change that. Beginning his activism as a teenager, John Lewis devoted his entire life to the cause of justice, freedom and equality for all. John Lewis put his life and his principles on the line repeatedly for the noble goal of registering Black people to vote. His dedication to the cause led to him becoming the youngest person to speak at the March on Washington in 1963, where Civil Rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. gave his historic “I Have A Dream” speech.

On March 7, 1965 John Lewis and Hosea Williams attempted to shepherd a righteous contingent of 600 Black folks from the Brown Chapel AME Church across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama for the first of three Selma to Montgomery marches. The march was called in response to the coldblooded murder of Black veteran and civil rights activist Jimmie

Lee Jackson by an Alabama state trooper on February 26, 1965.

John Lewis, who died this past Friday, was just 25 years old at the time. As he approached the end of the bridge on that fateful day that would become known as Bloody Sunday, he could see the armies of animosity and oppression arrayed against him right before his eyes. Unarmed except for his faith in his cause, John Lewis stood in defiance as mounted Alabama State Troopers charged the praying demonstrators, using tear gas and beating the peaceful protesters with nightsticks. John Lewis himself was brutally beaten and his skull bore a scar from the attack for the rest of his life. His actions that day led directly to the passage of the federal Voting Rights Act on August 6, 1965.

We as a society finds ourselves back on the proverbial bridge once again confronting the forces of hatred, racism and xenophobia. Let the example, spirit and legacy of John Lewis lead us forward.

It’s about respect.

During a town hall between uptown youths and members of the New York Police Department (NYPD), both expressed the importance of respect in fostering a better relationship.

Mayor Bill de Blasio held the gathering in Harlem on July 17 to discuss relations between police and young Black people.

The event was also hosted by Iesha Sekou, who runs anti-violence group Street Corner Resources. Chief Jeffrey Maddrey, Chief of the NYPD’s Community Affairs Bureau, also attended.

Maddrey, who was in his third week in his role as Chief of Community Affairs Bureau, previously served as commander of Brooklyn North. He stressed how critical mutual respect is to relations between police and the public.

“I always preach respect. I would go to the precinct and tell officers, ‘Listen, you respect the people of my community.’ Then I would go to the street corner and tell the young brothers and sisters, ‘I just told the officers to respect you – you need to respect them,’” said Maddrey.

“Does it always work? Absolutely not. And when it doesn’t work, we have to deal with those officers appropriately,” he added.

The town hall was attended by a group of youth members of Street Corner Resources. Founded in 2005, the nonprofit works to reduce gun and gang violence in Harlem and also connects young people with employment

opportunities, education and mental health services.

The discussion was held as the city is experiencing a surge in gun violence, with a spate of shootings concentrated in northern Manhattan and Brooklyn. At least five shootings took place in one day, on Sun., Jun. 12th. The youngest injured then was a 15-year-old in East Harlem.

During the town hall, a young participant named Frank told of a negative experience he had with a police officer, explaining that he was pulled over for having tinted windows and became unnerved that the officer would not remove his hand from his gun.

He called Sekou, who spoke to the officer and defused the situation.

“This happens often,” Sekou remarked. “Young people I work with have my number on their phone for this reason. They’re fearful and they don’t know how to respond and they really feel like in that moment, they’re not being treated fairly and they feel like something’s going to happen.”

Maddrey remarked that the biggest complaint he receives from young people is the confrontational nature they say is used too often by NYPD officers.

There are many mental health benefits of gardening - a sort

of meditation that enhances mood, lowers anxiety and improves concentration.

Most recently, we got to wondering about the therapeutic benefits of St. John's wort. Since I still believe in science, I decided to find out what the research tells us. Here's what I learned.

1. What is St. John's wort? St. John's wort is a flowering yellow herb that has been used in traditional European medicine dating back to the Greeks. Its

Today it is best known, and has significant support, for its use in the treatment of mild to moderate depression. It has mixed reviews as a treatment for pre-menstrual syndrome, some limited support for relieving menopause-related symptoms and weak evidence in the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

3. How is St. John's wort prepared and how does it work? St. John's wort can be consumed in the form of teas, tablets, capsules and liquid extracts. The yellow star-shaped flowers and buds can be dried and made into capsules or teas or pressed for use in oils and liquids. It appears that

It is comparable to prescription antidepressants such as fluoxetine and certraline for mild and moderate depression. It also has fewer adverse side effects than prescription antidepressants. However, and importantly, St John's wort does not appear to be effective in treating severe depression.

5. What's the downside to St. John's wort? People tend to think that anything herbal is "safe." This is absolutely not true. Everything we put in our bodies has biochemical properties that have the

potential to impact our health - good and bad. Herbal remedies are not subject to rigorous clinical trials and are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) so knowing exactly what is in that

Bezos’ billions are growing.

While the COVID-19 crisis has sparked unprecedented unemployment and economic hardship for millions, some of the richest Americans have seen their fortunes grow.

According to an analysis by the Public Accountability Initiative, New York State’s 118 billionaires increased their net worth by an estimated $44.9 billion, or 8.6 percent, from March 18th to May 15th.

A Bloomberg Billionaires Index analysis released on Mon., July 20th revealed that Bezos is now worth $189.3 billion, having earned $74 billion so far this year.

Business Insider reported that Bezos is on track to become the first American trillionaire by 2026.

“If Jeff Bezos came right now and gave a check for $10 billion, he would not feel it,” argued State Senator Robert Jackson.

Jackson joined with other elected officials and hundreds of workers to march on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Manhattan office on Fri., July 17 call on the state to pass a tax on billionaires and to provide relief for

workers excluded from unemployment and federal aid.

Currently, over one million New Yorkers are excluded from federal aid because they work in the gig economy as street vendors, day laborers and domestic cleaners, or are undocumented or recently incarcerated.

And let them apply it all across the country, so you don’t hurt any one state,” Cuomo said at a press briefing. “I’d like to see those officials demanding that Washington do what it needs to do to help New York and the other states.”

Guzmán said that all workers had at most two more days of work before the store shuttered for good.

“I’m in the same boat they are. I’m out of a job, too,” he said.

The store, which first opened in 1995, had become a local favorite in part for its cheese and produce selection and its well-known “cold room” which housed meats, seafood and poultry.

Its large parking lot ‒ a rarity for New York City supermarkets ‒ drew shoppers from all over the city and even the suburbs, Muñoz said.

“People knew they could stock up because you could bring a car here,” she said.

Uptown resident Mac Levine, who has celiac disease, said she frequently shopped at the store because of its extensive selection of gluten-free products.

“Now, I might need to go to four different stores to get the same thing,” she said.

“We really need an international market. This was the type of store where people around here could get food for different cuisines,” added Maritta Dunn, a former Chair of Community Board 9. “It’s a loss for the community.”

Though community members expected

Village Super Market to purchase the Harlem store when it purchased other Fairway sites, that deal fell through and the company only purchased the parking lot.

Dunn said she hoped another grocery store would come to the location, but acknowledged it was less likely if the parking lot was not available.

“We’re not sure what will end up coming

here. In the end, it’s all about money,” she remarked.

Muñoz expressed frustration that other Fairway stores in predominantly white communities were being saved, but the Harlem location was closing.

“It’s always the black and brown communities that continue to be overlooked,” she said.

Workers also said they were not provided with personal protective equipment early in the pandemic.

“In the beginning, we had to bring our own masks from home,” said Matteo, who displayed a small bottle of hand sanitizer. “Eventually, they gave us these, but that was more recently.”

Community members have started a Change.org petition in an effort to save the store. Activists hope they can convince Village Super Market to relinquish the parking lot or purchase the store property with a guarantee to employ all current workers, Munoz said.

As of Sunday, the petition had garnered over 360 signatures, including those of City Councilmember Mark Levine and State Assemblymember Al Taylor.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer also weighed in.

“Almost every West Sider loves Fairway, and when they expanded to Harlem every Harlemite learned to love them, too,” said Brewer to The Manhattan Times. “So, it’s sad to see this day come, even though it was presaged somewhat by their bankruptcy filing.”

“We need to do something to be the voice for people who are being marginalized. They need our help,” Muñoz argued. “We want them to not only reconsider but make an investment in the Harlem community at a time when it really needs an investment.”

The uptown store closed this week.

“It’s always the black and brown communities that continue to be overlooked,” said Miosotis Muñoz.

St. John's wort can interfere with the therapeutic properties of commonly prescribed medications such as prescription antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, and birth control pills. Takeaway is that you need to do your research and be just as cautious when considering taking an herbal remedy as when you consider taking a prescription medication.
