I am grateful for the spring and summer! This year I have been more intentional than ever about notic-ing the birds and flowers and other life whenever I go outdoors. Going for walks, wearing masks, thor-oughly washing hands, and spending time outside while maintaining a safe physical distance from oth-ers is recommended. I find it very therapeutic to tune in to the nature that is all around whenever I am out for a walk. It helps me to breathe and give thanks for the presence of God in life. The act of intentionally noticing the natural world around me is a respite from the constant news cycles and the protocols which have become a part of my daily life during the pandemic. One day in April late in the afternoon an email got my attention. It contained a poem of e e cummings. You may know it, “[I thank You God for this most amazing].” The day had been another non-stop day and I was spent. I sat down and read the poem knowing the wonder of it but I could not feel it. I read the poem a second time and heard more of the beauty but still felt frazzled and unable to focus. After taking a couple of breaths I read it again. This time I could see and hear every word. The fourth time through the poem became a prayer. Finally I was aware of the presence of God and grateful for the day and all that was around me. The needs of a time can sometimes lead us to unexpected joy. Daily life has been upended. Uncertainty is a daily companion. But so is my daily walk. And so is daily reading. And so is daily breath. This method of returning to a word over and over again is a way to read scripture and enter into the presence of God. The practice of being intentional has brought order to my day. The practice of stopping to breathe has helped me to re-focus and notice the beauty around and before me. If you need some words of praise to God to read and re-read, check out the following Psalms: 8, 47, 48, 65-68, 96-100, 103-105, 111-114, and 145-150. God bless your acts of intention to notice nature, to see and hear God’s word, and to rest in God’s presence. Pastor Julie

Prayer Walk!

In this time when we have not been able to attend worship in-person, we wonder what can we do? There are many things on our minds and hearts. You can express these things to God in prayer. You are welcome to come to St. John’s and walk around the exterior of the building and pray at the Prayer

Walk signs that are placed all around the outside. Please remember to wear masks and physically distance from those outside your household. Enjoy the summer weather, remember that we stand, walk and pray in the presence of God, and lift the concerns in your hearts and minds to God. As it is written in Philippians 4: “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

Happy summer, dear friends in Christ!

I write this letter just before I take a Sabbath break (vacation) and because of that, there may be changes to everything at St. John’s by the time this gets in the newsletter! I think we all can relate to this idea of pandemic fatigue. Building an online community takes more time and energy while also attempting to make physical and prayerful connections with those who are not

online and cannot come to the church building. I know we all want to be back together in a tangible way but at present, we cannot in the way we desire, not until we can build the safety protocols required. Thank you for praying for our Task Force as they meet to discern all of this and our Church Council, who have a lot on their shoulders in leadership. Here are some things I think we can all “see” happening though as far as high-lights:

Soul Food - We have a wonderful midweek offering of four faith practices which rotate each week: service, agape (meal fellowship), Sabbath taking, and prayer. Join us each week for these practices. You will find what they are and when they are offered in the newsletter.

Centering Prayer Practice - I lead a lovely group of people every week through a type of prayer called Cen-tering Prayer, where we focus on a holy word and actively listen to where the Holy Spirit calls us. It’s a type of holy listening and you are invited. We meet via Zoom Tuesday mornings at 8:00AM. The Zoom link is found in the newsletter and the enews weekly.

#signsofgoodness – It’s easy to focus on the negative in our world and also the overwhelm we feel. I get it because it’s easy for me, too. If you are seeing good things happening, please tell me, snap a picture and send it to Patti, Bonnie or myself. We would love to share that.

Holy Communion - We have found unique ways to give communion to those who do not have online pres-ence with us. I have so enjoyed sharing the sacrament with some of you already. If you wish to receive this sacrament by phone, Patti would be so happy to help you by assigning you either a Pastor or a Commis-sioned Lay Assistant to do that with you. You would just need to supply your own bread and grape juice/wine.

Community Table Fundraiser – I wish we could eat pie and ice cream together, but we will not be able to have that very important, wonderful fundraiser for the Community Table this July. HOWEVER, an amazing donor has offered to match $800 if you donate for the “Community Table fundraiser” during the month of July. In order to continue to continue our support for this ministry, we hope to raise the $1,800 we need for the year. Thank you!

Gratitude – Thank you for your prayers and wishes. Your cards of support have brought in cheer to the staff as they attempt to figure all this out. It is clear you see this is no easy task to be the Body of Christ right now, but it is a time of creativity, too! Who knows what amazing things God will do through all this.

Thank you! Pastor Christine

Join Pastor Christine Tuesday mornings at 8:00AM for a practice known as Centering Prayer. This time of prayer will be offered every Tuesday morning via Zoom. To become a part of this group, please email Pastor Christine at [email protected] or indicated your interest on the St. John’s Facebook Page via Messenger.

Are you looking for a way this summer to stay connected and be fed in the Spirit? Are you hungry for a break from the chaos of this world? Soul Food on Wednesdays at St. John's is a time to be fed spiritually, to care for your self, gather as a family, or connect with the community through acts of love.

The themes of the weeks during the summer months include: a modified Summer Stretch time of Service, gathering around an Agape FEAST Meal, a mental health Sabbath break, and Prayer around the Cross. Watch for online information early in the week about Wednesday’s Soul Food. This summer please join us for Soul Food on Wednesdays !

Soul Food on Wednesdays Self Care – Sabbath practices

Below is the transcript of the video that went online on June 24th. (Look for it on Youtube) In the video St. John’s own Ann Brand teaches about a conscious breath.

Sabbath taking isn’t just about not doing work. It is also about caring for ourselves. To live out the teachings of Jesus, to serve others with love, to seek justice for all, we need rest and care. Finding time and space for self-care can be challenging or even seem selfish. But Jesus commands us to love our neighbors as ourselves, which means we need to show ourselves some love and care, too. Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated. It can be as simple as taking a conscious breath. God gave us the breath right from the beginning of our being. In Job 33:4 it is written: “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” Science shows us that the simple act of consciously taking slow, deep breaths engages the parasympa-thetic part of our nervous system, moving us out of fight or flight and into rest and digest. This rest and digest part of our nervous system is where our body and brain function most optimally-we learn better, we sleep better, we listen better, our body functions better. And this is hardwired into us; God designed us this way using the simple power of the breath. We have the self-care tool of the breath available to us all the time. But we have to remember to use it. We can consciously practice tuning into the sensation of our breath to help us calm down and be more present. Try this practice: each day, take 3-5 conscious deep breaths. Pay attention to the sensation of your breath from the beginning of the inhale all the way through to the exhale. Where do you feel the breath in your body? At your nostrils? Your belly? Your chest? All over? Get curious about what you notice. How does your body feel? You can set a specific time to do this conscious breathing each day, or tie it to something you already do every day. Maybe before you take that first sip of coffee in the morning or before you start your daily prayers. Try it for a couple weeks each day and see what you notice. May you be well and find comfort in the breath.

Soul Food on Wednesdays is shared online and includes gathering people for a day of service, the Agape Meal, Self-Care: Sabbath, and Prayer Around the Cross. You can follow this liturgy for the Agape Meal in your home.

AGAPE FEAST MEAL LITURGY

YOU WILL NEED: Bell (or similar sound), bread of any kind, water, a lit candle, and food of any kind you wish to share with those present. If you don’t have a bell, try using sounds from your phone to call you to this brief worship time before a meal. You could also use wind chimes! SOUND OF THE BELL SONG: We are one in the Spirit, we are One in the Lord. We are one in the Spirit, we are One in the Lord; and we pray that all unity may one day be restored. And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love, yes they’ll know we are Christians by our love. THE BLESSING OF THE MEAL

LEADER: How wonderful it is, how pleasant, for God’s people to live together in harmony! (Psalm 133) Welcome to this meal, in the name of Christ. We come to share in God’s love. PEOPLE: We come to share our food and our lives. LEADER: We come to break bread together, and open ourselves to each other. PEOPLE: We come to express our faith and our thanks. LEADER: May God bless this food and this fellowship. PEOPLE: As we share our food, we give thanks for this abundance, and we remember those who do not have enough. LEADER: May God give food to those who are hungry. PEOPLE: May God give us a hunger for justice, and a determination to serve those who hunger for food.

SETTING THE TABLE LEADER: On the table in the midst of this community with whom Christ is present we set symbols to remind us of his promises to us: READER 1: A candle, to remind us of the way, “I am the light of the world; whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life”. READER 2: Bread, symbol to remind us of God’s love, “I am the bread of life. The bread that I shall give is myself for the life of the world”. READER 3: Water, a symbol that in Christ, we will never thirst, for He will give us “living water” for our lives. All: God, we welcome your presence with us. May the food and companionship we share nourish our bodies, hearts and minds. And may our spirits be refreshed as we live in the light of your presence, with us now and at all times and places. Amen.

FOOD IS SERVED. (A time of fellowship, story, conversation, and enjoyment of God’s gifts) PEACE IS SHARED (after the meal and socially distanced when appropriate)

LEADER: Our meal is ended, but God’s banquet continues. PEOPLE: Let us take the banquet into the world and never give up until all people are fed. LEADER: May the peace of Christ be upon you, and may you be channels of peace and justice. ALL: Amen

CLOSING SONG: We will walk with each other; we will walk hand in hand. We will walk with each other; we will walk hand in hand. And we’ll guard each one’s dignity and save each one’s pride. And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love, yes they’ll know we are Christians by our love. SOUND OF THE BELL

EXPLANATION OF AGAPE FEAST MEAL “Agape” is the New Testament Greek word for “Self-giving love”. It is the kind of love God gives. In his New Commandment,

Jesus tells us that we are to love - “Agape” – one another as He has loved us. In our Christian tradition, “Agape” is also the name for informal meals and times of togetherness and mutual sharing, which remind us of all those meals the early Christians shared with each other in togetherness through the Holy Spirit.

Since we cannot be together in our church building for things such as our Pie and Ice Cream Social, FEAST, or Coffee Hour, creating a time of fellowship that also includes a holy space around food, can restore some of the ways of being church together to-day. In ancient times, when smaller groups (house churches) celebrated these “love feasts” in their own home, they taught each oth-er the togetherness in Christ which meal fellowship often brings.

Your faith family invites you to some “soul food” by creating a time of agape surrounding a meal. You can also do this liturgy with a few friends outside socially distanced, such as at a barbeque, next to a lake with a picnic meal, or at the family dinner table. Think of this as having a simple picnic, but instead of just fellowship with each other, you are also inviting Christ to your table and ac-knowledging that it is from God that all these gifts reside. (From several resources including Iona and the Episcopal Church)

We will be focus-ing on the SERVE part of the series. There are 2 Wednesdays remaining during the summer in which individuals and families can participate. Yes! Everyone is invited to join us for these service projects! In order to coordinate these projects and to do so as safely as possible, we will need individuals and fami-

lies to sign up in advance and to provide their own equipment. Some of the projects will include beautifying St.

John’s cemetery and helping with the landscape around the church. (There will be more projects popping up. So

The possibilities are endless! We would love to see how you are making a difference by sharing a photo. (Please text them to me at 715-829-1899.) Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light upon my path. Psalm 119:105

Greetings from SJCP!

We are hearing lots of reports that families are finding ways to enjoy some summer

fun! For our staff, summer is a welcomed time for a break and some fun of their own.

In planning, we find preschool in a sort of limbo about the upcoming school year. We are researching the reo-

pening possibilities and the necessary steps we would need to make to do it safely.

We are staying in touch with other preschools and daycare centers about their status and how they are handling

new procedures. We continue to receive guidance from our state licensing agency, the WI Department of Chil-

dren and Families. We have also trained and gathered resources from the WECA – Wisconsin Early Childhood

Association and are eager to hear what the Eau Claire Area Schools decide for the fall. With close attention to

recommendations from the CDC and the EC Health Department as well as the St John’s Safety Task Force, there

is a lot to be considered.

Our enrolled families have been supportive, patient and understanding in the process. Interested families con-

tinue to enroll for the fall!

We will keep you posted. In the meantime please keep SJCP in your prayers. Keep learning a lot, having some fun, and sharing God’s love!!

And you are equip-ping health workers with the protective gear they need to stay healthy and getting health networks accurate, up-to-the-minute information about COVID-19 and what to do to stay safe. Thank you, people of St. John’s, for your gifts that live out the mission to be a river of compassion that reaches out to the world.

*Capital Improvement Projects This summer the Property Committee is looking at the costs to finish painting outdoor windows, a plan for re-freshing the landscaping, and purchasing a video camera to enhance online worship. Other continuing projects include collecting enough funds to replace 6 remaining windows, upkeep for the roof and exterior brickwork, building securi-ty and the street assessment. The Property Committee is grateful for financial gifts and for all who contribute their time to keep the facility and grounds looking great.

COVID-19 has created a great need for Faith Communities to minister to the needs of people all while from a distance. This is challenging to say the least, however, creative ways of reaching out have abounded! Many of our Faith Community members have a heart for reaching out to others in love right now and the JUST US FOR JUSTICE RUN/WALK is an opportunity for people to live out their faith values by working for justice and of-fering compassion. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted us to take some new precautions and make adjustments, we are continuing with plans to hold our 13th annual Just Us for Justice Run/Walk on Wednesday, July 22nd. This year we have a VIRTUAL RACE OPTION which will also serve as our Plan B plan should we not be able to hold the event in person in July. For more about the VIRTUAL RACE OPTION see: https://www.cvjusticerun.org/copy-of-run-park
