Are YOU Living Life, or is Life Living YOU? For many of us, we have a hard time accepting who we are. We attempt in many ways to alter who we are

and what we are. In effort, we struggle on a daily basis to achieve who we WANT to be. We let is consume us and sometimes, we let it overtake our life and then suddenly we are not living life, we allow life to live us.

Rev. Atsushi Nobukuni once told a bunch of Ohtani Senshu Gakiun Students, “If you are compared to flowers, you are not a natural flower, rather you are an artificial flower, even if your flower blooms beautifully. Your life is such that you try to bloom as an artificial flower and wish to soar to lofty heights. If we don’t accept the Buddha’s Heart and instead place our priority on ego-consciousness, it means we doubt the Buddha’s Wisdom.”

One should celebrate the life that we are given, not try to alter it. In the Letters of Rennyo Shōnin states, “Life swiftly passes and who among us can maintain our human form of even a hundred years?” It goes on to say, “There is nothing more real that this truth of life. The fragile nature of human existence underlies both the young and the old, and therefore we must, one and all, then to the teachings of the Buddha and awaken to the ultimate source of life.” Rennyo concludes this letter by saying that one should “fully appreciate the meaning of THIS life, which is unrepeata-ble and thus to be treasured above all else. By virtue of true compassion, let us realize the irreplaceable value of hu-man life and let us together live the Nembutsu in our hearts.”

What does this mean for us? Once, a minister was asked, “I am afraid to die.” To which the minister relied, “What are you saying? Before you make such a statement, you should ask yourself, “am I truly living?” it sure doesn’t look like you are dying.”

A lady was so unsatisfied with her appearance that she spent thousands of dollars and many years trying to look like the ideal woman. She was never satisfied and kept on going for more and more surgeries. What she didn’t realize was that as she was getting older, she was going through so much natural physical changes, that she could never be happy, and that she missed so much in life.

We cannot take our life for granted, true living is the daily reflection of the quality of our relationship we have with our emotions and the coping mechanism we have to the life we ae given. The Buddha teaches in the Contempla-tion Sutra how to cope with one’s challenges rather than the ego-centered battles with our challenges.

In my life, I have had many challenges. I am sure all of us can attest to that. However, in the end, as I reflect on it, I am very grateful for these challenges in that I am have the opportunity to learn about myself and received so much through my challenges, rather than moping and letting it consume my life.

Once we realize what we have in life, the Buddha teaches us to work to overcome the stresses and not be consumed with it. It is not to say, we just give up, we should learn to adapt to it, then we realize how much more we can do in this life.

Rev. David Fujimoto

Aloha Everyone! Have you noticed that the Mililani Hongwanji Ohana is striving to be a Dharma -Centered Organization, trying to be inclusive, open; and compassionate relationships are the highest priority . . . not outcomes. Our members look for-ward to meeting each other on Sundays, and concerned when we hear of illness in the family, or worry if someone is missing for a while. So we call and are relieved to find out everything is okay - for now. I am inspired by just observing the various social and/or working groups that meet at the temple and even schedule activities away from the temple because they have a bond, a similar interest, friendship and respect for each other, or they simply enjoy sharing their time and efforts to helping others. Whether sharing the joy of meticulous card making with the Lotus Connection gang, or the sweat equity of the Thursday Gang, the quietness of the Mindful Meditation session, the sincerity of the BWA members supporting opportunities for improvement, the electricity and energy of the MH Jammers who just want to enjoy singing, playing ukulele, learning new gathas, laughing at funny songs, and even the tireless planning and meetings of the Bon Dance Committee. In every instance, we try to put ourselves in others shoes to try to help to make things better. We say “Namo Amida Butsu” as our expression of gratitude for the absolute and unchanging love and compassion with which Amida embraces us and connects us one to another. We can feel for each other, understand each oth-er’s stories, and often intrigued with each other’s humanity including age, family profession, and interests. Our Mililani Hongwanji Ohana is solid, focused, interdependent, and encourage our youth in Dharma School, Jr. YBA, and our seniors just want to listen, learn, and simply enjoy, Ichigo Ichie, a once in a lifetime experience. Finally, I want to thank the Oahu District temples for sharing the changes evolving as related to our Hongwanji theme -“Embrace Change: New Vision - Open Communication: Pearl City Hongwanji does presentations of their temple altar (continuation of Dharma Light Studies), Wahiawa Hongwanji participated in the Ekiden Relay race as part of the Honolulu Ekiden and Music Festival 2017, Aiea Hongwanji started a new taiko group that meets weekly, led by a young Dharma School student, Ewa Hongwanji thanks Aiea and Mililani temples for helping at their bon dance, Waialua Hongwanji, as a member of the Waialua / Haleiwa Buddhist Council partners with Haleiwa Shingon Mission, Haleiwa Jodo Mission, Wahiawa Soto Mission, offered incense at 4 cemeteries and the Haleiwa Veterans Memorial. Great ideas! Have a great summer! Enjoy the Bon Dances and remember to shout “Namo Amida Butsu” when you feel that Nembutsu moment of gratitude. Namo Amida Butsu. Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii HEADQUARTERS UPDATE

THE 59th ANNUAL HAWAII HONPA HONGWANJI MINISTERS ASSOCIATION SEMINAR The 59th Annual Hawaii Honpa Hongwanji Ministers Association Seminar was held on June 13-15, 2017 hosted by the ministers of Hawaii District with the support of the Hawaii District members. Annually, a lecturer is dispatched from the Honzan (Main Temple) to provide kaikyoshi ministers with an opportunity to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the Buddha-Dharma. The theme of this year’s seminar was “Shin Buddhist Living & medicine” and ministers received very informative and time-ly sessions from Professor Masahisa Tabata who is a medical doctor and also a pro-fessor of Ryukoku University. He has been advocating the integration of Buddhist perspectives into the world of medicine. Simultaneously, there is a movement pro-moting the inclusion of spiritual care into health care in the United States. In Janu-ary 2017, HHMH participated in a seminar on “Making Healthcare Whole.” Ministers express their deepest appreciation to the members of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii for their support which makes it possible for ministers to gather for learning, reflection, discussion, fellowship and revitalization.

CONCLUSION OF DENTO HOKOKU HOYO Dento Hokoku Hoyo (The Commemoration on the Accession of the Jodo Shinshu Tradition) is a series of services at Honzan in Kyoto, Japan to formally announce that His Eminence Kojun Ohtani has taken on the responsibilities of Monshu and is following the footsteps of his predecessors to spread the Dharma with an emphasis on sharing the Nembutsu teaching to a greater number of people throughout the world. This Com-memoration started in October 2016 and successfully concluded a total of 80 services conducted on May 31, 2017. About 2,000 people attended each service, and members from the Overseas Districts (BCA, Canada, and Hawaii) were able to participate in this auspicious observance on October 21, 2016 and March 31, 2017. On May 24, 2017, the Overseas’ Bishops (Bishop Kodo Umezu of Buddhist Churches of America, Bishop Tetsuei Somayama of Federacao Budista Sul-Americana Jodo Shinshu Honpa Hongwanji, Bishop Tatsuya Aoki of Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temples of Canada, and Bishop Eric Matsumoto of Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii) partici-pated in the Hoyo representing their respective Kyodans as they gathered for the World Jodo Shinshu Coordinating Council Meeting. PRESIDENT’S DENTO HOKOKU HOYO REPORT I had the honor of representing Hawaii Kyodan and joining Bishop Matsumoto in personally congratulating the Gomonshu as he assumed leadership of the Hongwanji worldwide. These are excerpts from my congratulatory remarks: “On behalf of the members in Hawaii, we congratulate Gomonshu on his accession to head of our Jodo Shinshu spiritual tra-dition. I am a member of Jikoen Temple in Kalihi in the city of Honolulu. In front of our temple is a large boulder from Okinawa with the kanji SHIKAI KEI TEI carved in it. SHIKAI KEI TEI translates to: Within the four seas, all are brothers. Our presence here today is proof of the truth of this saying. We have come from across the Pacific Ocean to congratulate and wish you well, our brother in Nem-butsu, as you lead us into the future. We are proud, motivated, and honored that you are clearly communicating the joys and our re-sponsibilities as Jodo Shinshu followers. You are pointing the way into the future, and we will follow you. Again, congratulations from Hawaii.“ After attending the ceremonies in Kyoto, we traveled north to follow in the footsteps of Shinran. On the seventh day of our trip, we visited the Kotagahama Beach. It was desolate, cold, windy, and cloudy. As I gazed out over the beach, the breaking waves, feeling the cold and wind, I felt in my bones the desolation and loneliness that Shinran must have felt as he approached the beach in his unsteady boat. And yet out of such despair, he was able to nurture the spirit of the Namo Amida Butsu. As we held a short service above the beach, in the cold, and Reverend Hasebe read a Gobunsho, “The Tradition of Shinran Shonin,” I was completely overwhelmed by where I was. In that moment, Shinran was real for me, living and breathing. Namo Amida Butsu was real. At that moment, our pil-grimage has accomplished its purpose. On July 4th, BWA members and Rev. Fujimoto will be going to the Wahiawa Nursing and Rehab Center where Rev. Fujimoto will conduct a ser-

vice for the residents. The BWA ladies, as in past o-bon seasons, will be performing several bon dance numbers for the residents. For many of the resi-dents, watching the dancers and hearing the music will bring back fond memories of yesteryear. We encourage all kyodan members to come and join us for a fun time. Meet at the temple at 9:30 to car-pool or at the hospital at 10:00. This is a worth-while community service for everyone. Another on-going community service

undertaken by the BWA is collecting toiletries for the homeless. Thank you for your donations and we would appreciate your continued sup-port for this worthy cause. Our last donation was made to the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Center’s Outreach Program. A toiletries box is located in the closet in the back of the temple. See Lyn or Sharon if you have any questions. BWA members are looking forward to the 2017 State Lay Con-vention at Aiea Hongwanji on Sept. 9. It should be a momentous occa-sion with the new Gomonshu, His Eminence Monshu Kojun Ohtani pre-sent. The guest speaker will be Jay Sakashita who teaches religion courses at LCC and UH Manoa and has a column called Misfit Spirit in Midweek. For lunch we’re having a luau type buffet. Sounds like a special and rewarding event to attend.

Thank you everyone for your kokua at our Bon Dance on June 17th. An overflow crowd and lots of dancers honored our ancestors with joyful dancing and camaraderie. The weather was perfect with a little shower to cool us off during a lively Fukushima Ondo. Thank you to Elliot Peters and the Oahu District Bon Dance Club, in their beautiful kimonos, for leading all the dances, and thank you Ewa Fukushima Bon Dance Club for another signature performance. And thank you also to MC Arynn Ishikawa from Mililani Hongwanji for an awesome and energetic job!
